Albany:: The University of the State of New York 1951. A solid copy -- square and reasonably tight. Bound in the original blue cloth lettered in gold on the spine. Laid-in are two typed letters signed by the compiler Milton W. Hamilton to George H. Crosbie editor of THE AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR'S JOURNAL. Both discuss an article that Hamilton was writing about a Sir William Johnson letter. The article was scheduled to be published in the April 1952 issue of Crosbie's magazine. Sir William Johnson 1715-1774 was the superintendent of Indian affairs for British America. See DAB Vol V pp. 124-128. This volume of Johnson's papers covers the period September 1758 through December 1763 including the campaigns and diplomacy of the French and Indian War Pontiac's conspiracy settlement of the peace Johnson's wise policies and importance in placating and controlling the Indian tribes especially the Six Nations of Iroquois. It parallels Volume III and a part of Volume IV of the Johnson Papers supplementing and filling out the picture of those years. Illustrated with 12 plates. This volume is also of interest to numismatists for its information on the rare Montreal Medals -- awarded in the late Spring and Summer 1761 by Johnson to 182 Native Americans who remained loyal to him and to the British army throughout the Montreal campaign of 1760. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. circa 1960. Very good. Faint inoffensive tape stain at each corner. Glossy head-and-shoulders portrait of Johnson in suit and tie facing right head turned toward the camera and grinning slyly left hand on cheek. In a light area at lower left he inscribes and signs huge and bold: "To Don -- / Kindest regards -- / Van Johnson" in thickish dark blue ink. An outstanding vintage example. unknown

The third volume which was added to the Tale of a Tub and which contains various treatises The Art of Political Lying A Discourse on the Contests and Dissensions was added later around 1750. Certain very curious plates in this collection are highly appreciated notably that of the famous battle of the books. The translation is by Van Effen. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary half sheep binding with marbled sides. Smooth spine decorated with 4 fleurons gilt roll at head and foot. Tan morocco title label black wax volume label. Corners slightly bumped. Volume labels of volumes I and II rubbed. Good copy. A Tale of a Tub as well as the other treatises are satirical writings of which the author had made something of a specialty. A Tale of a Tub deals in particular with dissensions among Christians this writing would moreover prevent Swift from accessing the bishopric of the cathedral of which he was dean. All of these satirical pamphlets are above all writings from the beginning of Swift's literary career it was only 20 years later that he would compose Gulliver's Travels. The free humorous offbeat bombastic and irreverent style which characterizes them has become over time one of the surest marks of the English spirit. Chez Henri Scheurleer unknown

Jones' work was the accepted guide to surgical practice during the American Revolutionary War" G&M 2155; Austin 1843; Evans 15100 and 14814; Sabin 94063 and 36524. In near fine condition. Although Jones was born in America and brought up in a family of medical doctors he was trained as a surgeon in France by some of the leading physicians in the world including Percivall Pott one of the founders of the study of orthopedics. His doctoral thesis On the Observation of Wounds would later develop into this seminal surgical text and the very first treatise on surgery to be printed in North America. Jones was also integral in establishing the medical school that would later become Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was appointed as the very first professor of surgery in the Americas.
