Jules de Goncourt does not hide his enthusiasm and admiration for the work of the sulfurous and terrible Jules Vallès: ""We have often had recently the urge to put our sympathies for you at the tip of our pen to write to you how much pleasure we had in catching an article a page twenty lines signed with your name your artist's mark; a foolish modesty the embarrassment of throwing our handshake in your face has held us back. you will not doubt the profound and keen interest we have taken in this poignant severe and warm study merciless and vibrant."" which has marvelously depicted the turmoil of the common people: ""There passes through all your pages this generous and melancholic bitterness that the spectacle of social miseries gives to tender and noble souls. Composition created by Gustave Doré and engraved by Jules Fagnion on China paper and mounted on Dutch laid paper at the request of publisher Hetzel to illustrate his folio edition of Perrault's Contes in 1862. Excellent condition. These illustrations of the Contes are considered the most successful treatment of this text: Gustave Doré presents an unprecedented dramatic vision. With him everything contributes to the dramatization of the tale from the theatrical staging of the tableau to the smallest details that generate terrifying realism through the technique called ""tinted wood."" He uses India ink or gouache previously diluted as required by the ""wash"" technique. For Perrault's tales the eleven best engravers of the period were commissioned to engrave with burin the forty wood plates: Pannemaker Pisan Pierdon Maurand Boetzel Brevière Hébert Deschamps Dumont Delduc and Fagnon. Gustave Doré's work in illustrating the Contes is essential; he does not reduce engraving to its ornamental function but transforms it into a true narrative object. These illustrations are Doré's most famous works and immediately received enthusiastic criticism notably that of Sainte-Beuve in Les Nouveaux lundis December 23 1861: ""Un Perrault comme il n'y en eut jamais jusqu'ici et comme il ne s'en verra plus. . Je ne puis que dire que ces dessins me semblent fort beaux d'un tour riche et opulent qu'ils ont un caractère grandiose qui renouvelle l'aspect de ces humbles contes et leur rend de leur premier merveilleux antérieur à Perrault même."" ""A Perrault such as there has never been until now and as there will never be again. . I can only say that these drawings seem very beautiful to me of a rich and opulent turn that they have a grandiose character that renews the aspect of these humble tales and restores to them their first wonder prior to Perrault himself."" One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered luxury edition stamp on the verso pale marginal foxing. Lithograph inspired by the first four stanzas of the poem La chevelure from Charles Baudelaire's collection Les Fleurs du Mal. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other journals such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the journal. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic currents of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe edition: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too insubstantial owes its reputation not to its own beauty but rather to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at the same time is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful impression. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and displayed in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the illustrated luxury book.
