Folding marks from mailing. An engaging letter in which Jules Romains corresponds with the painter Dignimont about the forthcoming illustrated edition of his sweeping novel cycle Hommes de bonne volonté: ""J'ai beaucoup pensé cette fois-ci encore aux belles compositions que vous nous avez montrées samedi. Je continue à trouver tout cela très important."" Romains' remarks are revealing as they highlight the divergence between how he envisioned his characters and how his friend interpreted them: ""Est-ce que nos deux jeunes gens ne font pas encore un peu trop rupin. . Je verrais de Marquis de St Papoul avec un visage plus maigre et plus allongé un peu donquichottesque."" He concludes with an apology for his demands: ""Hélas ! Je suis embêtant. Mais j'aime tellement vos compositions que je me permets d'y rêver comme si je les avais faites moi-même."" The illustrated edition would be published in 1954 by Flammarion marking the sole collaboration between the Académie Française member and the Montmartre painter. unknown

Le Président de la 8e commission des congrès et conférences Sénateur Jules Simon10 Place de la MadeleineJules Simon 18141896 was a French philosopher politician and advocate of liberal republicanism during the 19th century. He served as Minister of Education and briefly as Prime Minister of France under the Third Republic. Known for his support of secular education civil liberties and moderate reform Simon was a key figure in shaping modern French republican ideals. He remained active as a senator and intellectual until his death. The text is written in a different hand and ink from the signature. This fragment is mounted on an aged card bearing a truncated list of names in a third hand without context. The overall piece is 5- X 2- Inches.
