""Sans dessus dessous"" is an anticipation novel in which certain characters from ""De la Terre à la Lune"" reappear. Jules Verne features the artillerymen of the Baltimore Gun-Club planning by means of a cannon shot to straighten the Earth's axis of rotation to make it perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. ""Le Chemin de France"" relates the adventures of Natalis Delpierre a French soldier visiting his sister in Prussia when the Franco-Prussian conflict breaks out. The story takes place in 1792. While Natalis Delpierre a soldier in the French army is in Prussia visiting his sister war breaks out between France and Prussia; Delpierre and his friends must then find a way to return to France. Headcaps depressed. Back cover good but with some soiling. Paper very fresh white with 3 pale foxing spots on 3 pages. Volume very solid and uniform edges perfectly smooth. Very handsome copy overall. Adventure novel devoted to the question of slavery and more particularly the slave trade by Africans themselves. Un hivernage dans les glaces is one of the first titles in Hetzel's famous white collection; the collection was launched with 9 titles including Un hivernage dans les glaces. A primitive first version had previously appeared in the Musée des familles in 1855 spread over several issues of the magazine. This official version was rewritten by Verne revised and modified and is the same as found in the collective editions. The primitive version was naturally forgotten until the Bulletin de la société Jules Verne republished the version in 2003 in a limited edition of 50 copies. Publisher's binding type 1 ""with oval vignette"". This title features 5 different types of binding but the first type is the only one corresponding to the typography of Hetzel bindings. Spine with stylized black and gold vegetal motif a gilt cartouche for the title. Rich decoration on the upper board with angular red fleur-de-lis on black ground. Large oval vignette illustrated scene printed on percaline. Second board with fleur-de-lis decoration. Plate signed Souze binding by Lenègre. Fine first plate. Corners good barely turned for some. Spine good headcaps rubbed. Second board good with slight shadowed areas. Some light brown stains on certain pages but overall fresh with paper remaining white. A handsome copy. J. Hetzel unknown‎

Lithograph inspired by a poem by Jules Breton reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created especially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of a beautiful format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a complete work in itself. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters amplified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""poster mania."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. ‎GERMANY ITALY FRANCE ENGLAND. Good. 1932. On offer is the original 1932 manuscript 'Grand European Tour' travel journal handwritten by Julia A. Read as evident from her inscription: "Munich Apr. 14th 1932 A note book in which to write impressions of things enjoyed & experienced in the six weeks since Havrah William Lines Hubbard and I left Wilmington Calif. On March 4th 1932 on the good ship San Francisco." Julia she is Hubbard's travel companion and while the relationship is not clearly specified it is assuredly intimate. In 1932 we find Hubbard we list his diary separately well ensconced as the world wide authority on Opera having in 1908 published a comprehensive history on the subject and as a Dramatic Arts editor for a major newspaper for many years he was considered no small expert in the related arts. A charming correspondent Julia may well be writing 'her' diary but this is really 'their' diary for Havrah/Hubbard her companion and it seems intimately so as she annotates his and her life on this very extended trip: what they read what they eat who they visit intermingle with the travel facts of the trip the histories admired the hotels and entertainments rated: "We have been here at the Ritz six weeks. Eric & Mathew seem to enjoy it here much. The Gardens are beautiful." And so much more as she begins retrospectively as she writes: "Havrah and I had such very comfortable cabins side by side that we enjoyed staying in them much time reading or looking out except when walking or eating or climbing about the ship. The Capt and all officers and waiters were very courteous and kind. Prof. & Frau Einstein proved pleasant and enjoyable traveling acquaintances. We were at the Capts table at the farewell dinner." Almost 200 pp quite well filled with a Grand European tour: Casa Riva Hotel Eden the Ritz and the social circle always includes a Baroness a Grandee or such. But she also manages to surprise the reader when page after page we admire her observations. Here is a particularly touching entry: "May 31st Hotel Eden Sirmione Decoration Day in America Always since the war ended between the North and South in USA 61-65 - so many years ago on the 31st of May a bullet sent out by a sharp shooter found lodgement in my brother Spencer Tom. heart and he fell with a smile into the arms of a comrade." Online bio notes: William Lines Hubbard 1867-1951 worked off and on from 1891 to 1907 as music critic and editor of the Chicago Tribune -he was also dramatic editor 1902-7-while teaching singing and living in Europe from 1893 to 1898. ‎SS ALEPPO EUROPE MT. VESUVIUS ITALY. Good. 1867. Full-Leather. On offer is an original manuscript travel diary of a young woman who travels from America to Ireland on the S.S. Aleppo and then spends time in London and Paris before going to Italy. Stating "Bought at Dublin 12 Nov. 1867" then a later hand in pencil on the fep suggests the names of Julia L. Hale or Julia de Rubignir. Entries range from 1867 to 1868 and our diarist does a great job describing the journey from America to Ireland on the ship as well as all the places she visits. The passages of her witnessing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and their attempt to be 'tourists' of the lava flow while in Italy are great. She adds further dimension by drawing a lovely folk art picture of the volcano in action. She also sees the Prince and Princess of Italy shortly after their marriage. Here are some snippets: We first caught sight of Vesuvius an hour and a half or two hours before we reached Naples it was then quite light and we could just see a silvery white cloud hanging over it but it became brighter and showed the fire as the day grew darker and we drew nearer. The first night at Naples we went to the Hotel Washington. I shall never forget the scene as we drove up to the door there was Vesuvius black as night except where the volcanic fires rose and fell while above the mountain a cloud hung even darker but a little on the right the full moon was just rising at first we could not see it but only its effects in the silver edges of the clouds and a lovely silver light which seemed to float up from a cloud then gradually it rose into sight flooding the whole city with light gleaming on the water in strange contrast to the reflection of the Red lights on the volcano. We could scarcely tear ourselves away from the windows that night and were very sorry to leave the Hotel the next morning but there was an odor which could not be explained away so we walked away… We went ashore and went to the ruin of the temple of Jupiter…we went to the amphitheatre which is believe the most perfect one in the world we killed quite a large snake which was nearly at the very top then all the others except John and I went to Solfatara which is a mountain called the back door of Vesuvius. First we went to Vesuvius and drove up as far as we could then walked about two mils till we came to the lave which was thrown up or down or both as Mary wrote. It looks something like as if very thick black or brownish mush had been boiling furiously and suddenly congealed or like a storm raging at sea. We only went about half way up but it was not considered safe to go farther but we could see the mountain perfectly of course and had a good idea of the lava. Here another accident happened while we were in the tunnels there was so much smoke and steam that the engineer was poisoned by it and first fainted and then had convulsions very badly but they fanned them with branches and after an hour or two he was well enough to go on. We then went to San Lazzaro an island about a mile and a half from Venus there is a learned and celebrated Armenian convent there the monks are all so handsome and look so intelligent…we had such a lovely monk to go around with us he was very small but quite handsome he had large bright black eyes and such a merry pleasant expression he had curly black hair and wore spectacles and was very restless indeed we could scarcely glance at a thing before he would say No we will go. The most interesting things we saw were the autographs of Byron his portrait which was very handsome and the room which he occupied for three months while studying the Armenian language. Thursday morning the Prince and Princess and attendants came into town about half past ten there was a rope drawn across the grand canal just above the depot and none but private gondolas were allowed to go inside of it and our gondola was just outside and when the rope was taken away the jam was so great that no one could move scarcely the men shouted agua agua and there was the greatest hubbub and confusion and I really never saw anything so exciting in my life. Many of the hired gondolas go way ahead of the private ones ours was next but one to the prince's just before they landed so we could see them splendidly. The gondola or rather barge was finely ornamented there were a great many rowers…the boys took off their hats and bowed the prince did the same to them…he looked very tired and dusty he had a melancholy look as usual but we all liked him. Full page engraved portrait depicting at full length a statue of count Jean Matthias de Schoulembourg commander in chief of the Venetian army to whom the translation has been dedicated. At the beginning of the dedication an engraved headpiece with the coat of arms of Schoulembourg. Engravings of coins and medals throughout the text made by the famous French engraver Bernard Picart. Some faint foxing. Small wormhole in the blank gutter of 24 leaves far from the text Note: The Roman emperor Flavius Claudius Julianus 331-363 is the best documented ruler of late antiquity. He was a nephew of Constantine the Great ca. 280-337 A.D. who had adopted christianity and imposed it on his empire. For dynastic reasons Constantine in between wiped out in a massacre young Julian's family. In exile Julian covertly converted to neoplatonic polytheism. Julian was later at the age of 24 appointed Caesar by the successor of Constantine the emperor Constantius II. In this capacity he proved himself a successful general in Gaule where he repeatedly drove back and crushed the invading Germanic tribes. After the death of Constantius in 361 Julian openly adopted and promoted paganism. Hence the title 'Apostata' because he was the last emperor who rejected and challenged christianity. He tried to revive the pagan state cult and to restore the traditional pagan religious practices. His reign however lasted only 18 months from 361 till 363. 'Julian's voice can be heard memorably in his surviving writings particularly in his letters in a fierce denunciation of the people of Antioch 'Misopogon' or 'Beard-Hater' and in a satire on his imperial predecessors 'Convivium sive Caesares' which ends with a vicious portrait of Christ'. The Classical Tradition Cambridge Massachusetts 2010 p. 500 Julian was both philosopher and a men of letters and far too human for his time. His work 'Against the Galileans' Christians meant to refute christian dogmas is lost but partly survives in fragments and excerpts in 'Contra Iulianum' a work full of slander by a fierce enemy of Julian Cyrillus bishop of Alexandria. § A French translation of Julian's satire 'Convivium sive Caesares' commonly called the 'Caesars' was published in 1666 by the Swiss scholar and diplomat Ezechiel Spanheim 1629-1710. It was repeated in 1683 in Paris and in 1728 in Amsterdam now with 300 engravings of medals and coins. Spanheim was a prominent name in the field of numismatics and is best known for his 'De praestantia et usu veterum numismatum' of 1664 revised and enlarged in 1706. In 1680 Spanheim entered the service of Elector of Brandenburg as minister of state. As ambassador of the Great Elector he spent nine years at the court of Paris. After the Peace of Ryswick in 1697 he returned as ambassador to France where he remained until 1702. On the very day of the coronation of Frederik I as king of Prusia 18th of January 1701 Spanheim was made Baron this to thank him for his services. In 1702 he went on his final diplomatic mission as first Prussian ambassador to England. He died in London in 1710 having eaten too much grapes Clericus tells us. Baron von Spanheim had an encyclopedic knowledge of the ancient world. In 1696 Spanheim published an edition of the 'Opera Omnia' of Julian. § This 1728 edition is the third of that translation. Spanheim had printed as is explained by the Swiss/Dutch scholar Jean Clericus beneath the text observations to help less well informed 'ordinary' men of letters. This ingenious satire is difficult reading 'being full of erudition and allusions to many facts customs and opinions of Greek and Latin authors'. At the end there are 196 pages with 'preuves des remarques sur les Césars de l'empereur Julien' with remarks and discussions for scholars and more experienced men of letters. The translation Clericus assures us 'is written in a pure style and is very accurate; otherwise that piece of Julian would have lost its beauty. Anyone who compares it with the earlier Latin versions of Cantoclarus and Cunaeus will easily percieve that those translations wanted to be mended and that many passages were spoiled or unintelligible. Besides those translators did not write a sufficient number of remarks to make one understand the sense and design of Julian'. A sympathetic and informative obituary of Spanheim by Johannes Clericus was published in the 'Memoirs of literature containing a large account of many valuable books letters and dissertations upon several subjects' Second edition London 1722 p. 412-426 Provenance: From the Rostagni Library. 'The Rostagni private library has been built over a time of 133 years between 1880 and 2013 by 3 generations of collectors: Augusto Gabinio 1863-1939 internist his nephew Augusto Rostagni 1892-1961 classical philologist at the University of Turin and his son Luigi Rostagni 1932 Operational Director. . Augusto Rostagni taught Ancient literature in various Italian Universities. In 1928 he was appointed professor in Latin literature at the University of Turin an office he fulfilled until his death in 1961. He became one of Italy's most authorative philologists of the 20th century. He held positions of President of the Turin Institute of Classical Philology Dean of the Department of Literature and Philosophy Editor of the Rivista di Filologia Classica President of the 'Accademia delle Scienze di Torino'. He was a well-known member of many Italian and foreign academies and institutions amongst them the Accademia dei Lincei. The Department of Philology Linguistics & Classical Tradition of the University of Turin is named after him.'
