""Tu es le soleil de mon âme et la joie de mes yeux"" You are the sun of my soul and the joy of my eyes s. l. • Paris 12 juin 1851 11.50 x 17.90 cm 4 pages sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter most probably unpublished signed addressed by Juliette Drouet to her lover Victor Hugo four pages written in black ink on a bifolium.  Transverse folds inherent to mailing fold joining the two leaves reinforced with a fine strip of pasted paper barely perceptible. Absent from the very complete online edition of Juliette Drouet's letters to Hugo by the Centre d'Études et de Recherche Éditer/Interpréter University of Rouen-Normandy. Very beautiful declaration of love and admiration by Juliette Drouet the day after Hugo's plea defending his son. Charles Hugo had been brought before the assizes and condemned despite his father's intervention for having valiantly castigated the execution of Claude Montcharmont. Hugo's great love addresses this letter in troubled times where father and son find themselves at the forefront of the scene for their abolitionist positions. Scandalized by the execution of Montcharmont a 29-year-old poacher from Morvan Charles Hugo publishes an article in l'Événement which earns him a trial for contempt of respect due to the laws: the Second Republic already exists only in name and the press is subject to frequent attacks further aggravated here by the notoriety of the Hugos. Victor wants to defend his son and delivers a plea that remains famous: ""Mon fils tu reçois aujourd'hui un grand honneur tu as été jugé digne de combattre de souffrir peut-être pour la sainte cause de la vérité. A dater d'aujourd'hui tu entres dans la véritable vie virile de notre temps c'est-à-dire dans la lutte pour le juste et pour le vrai. Sois fier toi qui n'est qu'un simple soldat de l'idée humaine et démocratique tu es assis sur ce banc où s'est assis Béranger où s'est assis Lamennais !"" My son you receive today a great honor you have been judged worthy to fight perhaps to suffer for the holy cause of truth. From today you enter into the true virile life of our time that is to say into the struggle for the just and the true. Be proud you who are but a simple soldier of the human and democratic idea you are seated on this bench where Béranger sat where Lamennais sat! ‎AUSTRIA BAVARIA. Good. 1867. On offer is a German recipe book filled with dozens of recipes geared toward baked goods confections and sweet beverages such as liqueurs and after dinner drinks. Based on the handwriting spelling and recipes within this “Rezepten Buch” most likely originated in Austria and Bavaria. The book is lacking cover. The front page has the title “Rezepten-Buch!” The author is Julius Mayr and the book is dated 1867. The first few pages of the book seem to be a preliminary textual elaboration on the making of sugar and similar substances that will be used in the recipes in the book. Such recipes include in the book include: ‘Pariserkaffee’ Parisian coffee ‘Apfelzuckerl’ apple candy ‘Veilchensaft’ violet juice ‘Englischer Reis’ English rice ‘Kirschenkompott’ cherry fruit salad ‘Radetzky Eistorte’ ice cream cake named after a famous Austrian field marshall ‘Pfirsich Compot’ Peach compote and many more. There is over 100 recipes in there and this gives a very good impression as to what desserts the Viennese might have liked during the reign of Emperor Franz Josephs. The condition of the book is good. Some pages are torn and frayed at the edge but all recipes are readable. The last 10 pages have detached from the binding as well. The handwriting is occasionally difficult to read but should be much easier for a buyer who speaks German or has fluency in older styles of handwriting. The writing has faded little. The book is 41 pages of which there is writing in 33 of them. The pages with writing are numbered. Format: 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. This should be a very interesting addition for both cooks and historians. One need only the capability to read the language and the style to get the most out of this fascinating document. ‎LEIDEN HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS. Good. 1849. On offer is the fascinating original 1849 through 1850s journal and letter copy book of the renowned Dutch instrument maker Julius Theodoor Leopold Hoefftcke. Born on 12 March 1800 in Berlin he moved to Leiden at age 26 and within two years he was appointed as the instrument maker of Leiden University. He supplied the academic world with instruments until his death in 1875. After which his grandson took over the company and moved to England. The book is a superb source for researchers and historians as a rare insight into the world of Dutch instrument making which was a growth industry and for which the Dutch were ferociously proud. This book contains all the financial agreements of Mr. Hoefftcke around 1850s to 1860s. For every individual borrowing the instruments or goods he noted how much should have been paid when it had to be paid and once paid he confirmed it in his book. From his letters one could conclude that he did not only loan out his goods but also sold them. The book shows that the financial agreements do not only limit themselves to the University of Leiden and in fact his instruments were shipped long distances. We note a letter shows that instruments were sent to J. Pohl who was an instrument maker located in the Hague since 1820. Besides the financial agreements there are also some formal letters to the clients and suppliers. Based on the letters one could say that some or perhaps all of the letters were just a written copy of an original letters. Many letters point out the author was German born as narrative is peppered with 'mit' and 'und' but most of this material dates about 25 years after he moved to the Netherlands so his Dutch is excellent and definitely understandable. ‎CHICAGO ILLINOIS IL. Good. 1929. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript Depression Era 5 year diary handwritten by a girl named June b. November 6 1909 whose surname is likely either Hluegner or Kandles as she has mention two Grandmothers with those names. June is a sad girl lonely for friendship even while a member of a sorority and it seems her happiness depends on her self image and body weight: 'Went to sorority. They all talk about their fellows. Oh lord! A perfect body!' Her sadness is also reflected in her nostalgia for a few moments of happiness in her past: 'in 1927 two years before this time I was seeing David Filerman. Wonder what he's doing now.' Home life is difficult too: 'Chas and Yi came over after Church. Dad certainly is unscientific. He's right. The world's crazy. Such a tirade of abuse I never heard. Too glad to go to Helen's.' She has one older sister Ruth who is 25 in 1929 and doesn't get along with her. Ruth seems to get all the guys eventually to get married in 1933. June is interested in gardening studies botany and music. Her basic premise is to find love marriage and to lose weight. In these 5 years she achieves nothing in that regard although she learns to drive a car on July 5 1929. June wonders Feb. 20 1930 "why I shouldn't act like other girls Why keep myself clean No fun like others." June is in turmoil about being able to go to college primarily The Principia A School and College for Christian Scientists to which she was accepted July 8 1929 but her attendance seems delayed due to financial difficulties. She does begin to attend in 1932 and also joins the school Glee Club. Besides attending school June works in an office. June does not have an aptitude for studies i.e. October 20 1931 E-French D-European History C-Geology and English and B-Botany. Every so often June laments the fact that she has no boyfriend no money nothing! She does not get along with her father but loves him dearly. Sometimes there's a reprieve and they have a lovely time together. June loves her mother though her mother has expectations of June i.e. her mother would have a fit if she learned she gained 10 lbs. She hates Chicago and often mentions taking grandparents and going shopping in Chicago. She might be living on the outskirts because one entry observes July 20 1931 that the grain is all cut and stacked. This Depression era diary notes on May 11 1930 "most of the furniture gone from the house…couldn't give mother anything for Mother's Day". On March 9 1931 "not much food in the house but will manage - so hungry and cold". Then later that year March 26 the family receives a check for $8870.44 and they in turn are very happy. Some miscellaneous observations include: March 4 1933 President Roosevelt elected and March 8 1933 "House meeting on Death" and May 30 1933 "went to Art Institute and saw period rooms and painting exhibit" and June 22 1933 "Went to World's Fair - Marvellous". The approximately 395 page book is well filled and for researchers and historians of Chicago area Depression Era or women's studies will be hard pressed to find a more interesting peek into the world of this young woman.
