Frontcover loosening Note: The Dutch author and schoolmaster Willem Gulielmus Kist1758-1841 studied in Leiden Latin and Greek under L.C. Valckenaer and D. Ruhnkenius. In 1779 he was appointed Conrector of the 'Scholae Latinae' in Breda. In 1784 he moved to the city of Middelburg where he became Rector of the local 'Athenaeum Illustre'. His inaugural speech was entitled 'De calamitatibus quae ex neglecta subolis educatione oriuntur et Patriae ruinam minantur'. Medioburgi 1784 Three years later the authorities of Middelburg made him lector of World History. He then delivered his speech: 'De barbariae tenebris per Graecos Romanosque scriptores feliciter depulsis'. Medioburgi 1787 In 1789 he received a call to a professorship at the University of Franeker but he declined. To thank him the government of the city appointed him Professor of History and Eloquence of the 'Athenaeum Illustre' which he accepted with the speech 'De voluptate animi ex diligenti veterum scriptorum lectione capienda'. A Dutch translation was published in the same year: 'Redevoering over de beöeffening der oude schrijvers als een bron van wezenlijk genoegen'. In his sparetime and retirement Kist wrote a number of successful novels and character sketches. One of his best known is 'Ring van Gyges wedergevonden of verzameling van Nederlandsche karakters'. Folio two pages inscribed on a four page bi-folium paper browned some paper loss on integral address leaf else in good legible condition. Letter from John W. Kittera Federalist member of Congress from Lancaster Pennsylvania to Jasper Yeates 1745-1817 jurist and justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court also from Lancaster in which Kittera relates some of the growing tensions arising from the Proclamation of Neutrality in 1793 after the declaration of war by France against Great Britain and the extension of the wars of the French Revolution into a greater maritime war and the resultant seizure of American shipping by the British as well as the French. " At this most critical and alarming period when the public bodies are in a perfect state of uncertainty whether our common country shall long enjoy the blessings of peace or soon be involved in all the horrors of war you will excuse me for intruding on you a few sentiments that have strongly impressed my mind. - While the government have declared this country in a state of neutrality the people by their public rejoicings at the success of the French arms by the secret aid furnished to the French by their town meetings hasty resolves and newspaper publications are evidently endangering the peace of the Country. The depredations committed on our trade particularly in the West Indies have so provoked the mercantile part of the community that their resentments can in many parts of the Union with difficulty be restrained. The Judge of the island of Montserrat an unprincipled rascal who is said to be interested in most of the privateers condemns all the American vessels that are tried in his Court. Injuries to our trade of the grossest kind are not only received from the British who have really received some provocation by the frauds of our merchants and the conduct of our Citizens but the French have detained in Bordeau above one hundred sale of American merchantmen by an imbargo for near six months. sic In this State of things what is best to be done is a question of immense difficulty. Congress have had their doors shut for three or four days past and I am at liberty to inform you that a question was taken respecting the laying of an imbargo sic and carried in the negative by a small majority. At first I confess I felt favorably disposed towards the measure but on the discussion changed my sentiments. I never saw Congress reduced to so many difficulties - You have seen the resolves of our town meeting. Dallas and Swanart harangued the crowd from the State House window and received a general huzza at the conclusion of each resolution. One drunken sailor had the assurance to say No for which he had two of his ribs broken and otherways much abused. But few of the respectable Citizens attended another meeting is to be had this evening. The mob at New York assembled on Sunday week entered the Roman Chapel playing the time of Caira drove the priest from the altar & the worshippers from the Church. These violent measures are productions of the worst of all evils and if instead of intrusting the management of the government in the hands of the Representatives of the people designing men are thus frequently to assemble the people to legislate for themselves the objection made by Despots to a republican form of government that it is good in theory but bad in practice is a good objection. Kittredge Advocated For School Lunches And Started The Hot-Lunch Program In New York City Public Schools In 1901.Afterwards She Continued Develop The Program For The Next Two Decades Finally Succeeding In Getting It Funded By The Board Of Education In 1920. Kittredge Helped To Financially Support The Henry Street Settlement Founded By Her Close Friend Lillian Wald And Even Lived At The Settlement Briefly In The Early 1900S. Kittredge Became A Household Adviser Because She Believed In The Importance Of The Home In National Life And Because She Was Shocked By The Conditions In Which Many Immigrants Lived. Like Christine Frederick She Aimed To Improve Household Management In The United States With A Focus On Making Better Safer Food And Furnishings Available To Women With Little Money And Teaching Them Up-To-Date Household Management Technique. Under The Umbrella Title Association Of Practical Housekeeping Centers She Established The First Of Several "Model Flats" In A New York City Tenement In 1902 Declaring: "If Household Administration Is To Take Its Place In The Front Rank With The Other Professions Of The Day Educators As Well As Women Must Wake Up And Realize That The Whole Housekeeping Question Is Dependent Upon Scientific Management Efficiency Skilled Labor And Effective Tools." Her 1911 Book Housekeeping Notes: How To Furnish And Keep House In A Tenement Flat Was A Compendium Of Household Management Lessons Taught In These Centers And Her 1918 Book The Home And Its Management Offered Practical Advice On Thrift In Furnishing A Home As Well As In Shopping For Daily Necessities. She Became The Most Famous Home Economist Also Known Then As Home Adviser Of Her Day. In 1915 She Attended The International Women's Congress For Peace And Freedom At The Hague. She Went Overseas During World War I Working For Herbert Hoover And For The Commission For Relief In Belgium Heading Up The Child-Feeding Program In France And Belgium. 1956 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A ROYAL ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEER IN POST WWII HONG KONG
HONG KONG KOWLOON CHINA. Good. 1956. On offer is an interesting military diary from the immediate post WWII years. It measures 5.5 inches by 3 inches and contains 365 page plus memoranda. The cover is in good condition and all pages are intact. It is about 66% complete although many entries are quite brief. K.J. Fillery is the author of this diary. In 1956 he is a Corporal in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers REME. Casual research has not turned up any additional information but he has noted his service ID number which would make a detailed search successful. Fillery belongs to a Light Aid Detachment LAD attached to the 27th HAA Reg't RA Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery. The 27th was stationed in Hong Kong and the REME LAD unit was attached to it to assist with engineering tasks. On Dec 30th 1956 he embarked for Hong Kong to join the Regiment. He arrived Jan 25th: "Total - 9255 miles. Arrived Kowloon about 0800. Very busy harbour good views of the island. Letter from Mum and Sheila. Weather cool - rather cold in fact. Ferry to Victoria arrived about 1100. Transported with mob of gunners to Stanley Bks miles away over twisty hilly road. Impressive scenery. Installed in L.A.D quarters." Jan 25. Almost immediately he is out shipping - important when you consider the rationing in effect in England at the time: "Started work in gunnery sets. Payday - $40.00. . bought cable release and PO medium filter $4.50. Went to tailors place bottles of pilsner steak egg supper in Sailors Mission House went to New York Theatre - saw "A Day to Remember"." Jan 26. All told he spent 9 months in Hong Kong before being rotated back to England Oct 17th. In those 9 months he travelled throughout Hong Kong visiting shops restaurants theatres cinemas etc. He also details his work whether standing guard duty or working with electrical equipment: ". Everyone knocked off at 1100 to attend Regt sports meeting Boundary Road. Stayed there about 5 min walked & then bus back to Ferry. Went to American Library. Spent couple of hours rooting around. Reasonable selection of books." Feb 16 "Went to town with Dave Fishback over to Kowloon visited YMCA etc. then saw King Henry V for free in evening excellent film though the presentation was not exactly 'West End' . apparently blokes caught a snake cobra down by flying dhobi . " May 19 "Hot day. Did minute portion of work on 4/7. Chemical de-bugging session . " July 31. He was present for the Kowloon Riots of 1956. He notes: "Admin put off owing to riots in Kowloon . Many gunners mobilized into riot squads. Curfew on Kowloon 1930-1030." Oct 11 He shipped out Oct 17th on the British troop ship SS Captain Hobson. Hobson had served as a Royal Navy hospital ship HMHS Amarapoora throughout WWII. En route they stopped in Dakar: "Dakar pop. About 295000 of whom 28000 Europeans. French naval base and commercial port." Nov 26. They docked in Liverpool Dec 5th. His last entry is Dec 8th: "Demobbed!!! He is an avid photographer and has purchased camera equipment in Hong Kong. Some of his memoranda pages contain notes about focal lengths etc. This is an excellent first-hand account of post-war garrison duty in the Far East. There is sufficient detail to paint an interesting picture of a young English soldier dropped into the exotic Far East. Historians will appreciate the corroborating information contained within. This notebook is in a hand made cover with a loose tucked in text block appears to be a report card regarding studies and lectures attended while a POW. Almost entirely in German entries are signed off by what appears to be ranking Officers. From the publisher: "The author of "Faceting History: Cutting Diamonds and Colored Stones" has for a long time had a deep interest in learning how the early faceters cutters of diamonds and colored gemstones were able to complete their work. What methods did they use What equipment did they have to make success possible How soon did they discover how to complete the many phases necessary to accomplish their work How did the equipment and methods differ between fashioning diamonds and faceting colored stones These are just a few of the questions that the author wanted to find the answers for. In looking for answers to these and other questions the author found that there were bits and pieces of information available in many previous books but there was not a good book available that would answer most of his questions. Upon hearing the author's remarks about this fact one of the librarians at the wonderful library located at the Gemological Institute of America's Carlsbad campus said that if such a book was not available 'maybe you should write the book!' Well the author had been thinking of doing just that but the remark caused the author to see the light and agree to get started on the project. Little did he know then that the project would require many months of eight hour days over seven day weeks to get the book completed. He decided to write a book that would answer these and other related questions that he had. The thought also occurred to him that such a book would be a valuable volume to be placed in libraries of individual faceters around the world. He realized that such a book would also be of great value to anyone who works behind a Jewelry store counter. A successful sales person is one who is knowledgeable about the products that they are selling. A book of faceting information would be extremely valuable if read and re-read from time to time. A customer in the Jewelry store will no doubt be favorably impressed by a sales presentation that is made with the use of interesting and informative information about diamonds and the various colored gemstones. The customer will be convinced that the sales person knows about what they are talking. The author has spent nearly three years on the project of researching the GIA library and other libraries along with the extensive personal library of gemstone related books that he personally possesses. Many conflicting reports were noted in his study. He has made the statements in his book reflect the most commonly accepted opinions of the most respected authors' works that he has found in his research. History is only obtainable from the earlier works of other authors. We cannot go back to the long past centuries ourselves to see first hand what really happened and when it happened. A study of faceting history requires making the best choices of the information that is available. This completed book answers questions as to why the fashioning of diamonds was/is so different from the faceting of colored gemstones. The book compares the needed equipment and the methods that have brought the greatest successes. In addition a great deal of other information connected to faceting is included. There are seven chapters in the book and there are over 125 photographs of the early equipment and methods that were used. The photographs show the faceters the workroom conditions and the tools and equipment that they used to complete beautiful and lasting gemstones. Though little is known about this American writer he had a following as a horror and sci-fi writer of such short stories as "The Caller in the Night" 1917 and other oft-anthologized ghost tales; his "In the Open Code" appeared in "The Best Short Stories of 1918" and he also published novels such as "The End of the Flight" 1917 and "Gallant Rogue" 1921. Two items: First a TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1923 March 2. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "I feel truly honored by your wish to include something of mine in your collection of autographs and manuscripts" he begins. "If the scribble I am sending you is not to your taste you must let me know. My book manuscripts are the property of the publishers and magazine editors never save or return the 'copy' of stories; hence this scrap from an unfinished yarn is the only thing at hand." Second is the accompanying "scrap" -- labeled "Rough draft" in red pencil at the upper left in Kline's hand -- which is titled "Sunk Without a Trace" and is an AMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. It consists of one very full page of bold and legible text beginning: "On the 15th of every March I regularly receive a line from my friend Dr. Carver. Regularly his letter commands me to dine with him at the ___ Club on the 21st of the month. This annual feast has become a fixture between us. The dinner is not to herald the technical and sometimes the actual arrival of Spring. It is to celebrate it may be the fourth the sixth -- this year it was the seventh -- anniversary of Dr. Carver's divorce." Could become a horror tale -- but in any case it's an attractive and interesting rough draft example that makes you want to read more.
