The only child of George Washington's long-time personal secretary Tobias Lear was actually born in the early "White House" in Philadelphia and Washington was his godfather; his mother died when he was two Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were among her pallbearers and he went on to become a successful attorney in Washington DC; Gilbert Stuart painted a well-known portrait of him. Outstanding AMS 2pp recto and verso 7 3/4" X 12 3/4" Portsmouth NH 1817 August 20. Very good. Three light horizontal original folds; mild age toning and slight edgewear. This attractively and boldly penned document is titled "Christmas Hymn" and contains the full text of a Christmas song whose original we have not been able to determine. Begins "Hail holy morn upon whose beams / A thousand radiant Seraphs rode / Bright from the Sapphire throne of God. / Bursting upon the Shepherd's dreams.- / While poised upon the glittering wing / A thousand choral voices sing / Glad tidings of great joy we bring / Be peace proclaimed on Earth / And Heaven's high arch with rapture ring." Goes on for several more stanzas closing with: "Thus for the gift that thou hast given / Hereafter we shall learn to rain / On days of everlasting Praise / Tun'd to the Gold en Harps of Heaven." He then concludes "Written from recollection for my Dear Cousin Miss Mary Storer" boldly dated and signed. Storer was the given name of Lear's mother Mary "Polly" Lear the first of Tobias Lear's three wives who was related to the Washington family. There were a great many prominent Storers in early Portsmouth history among them a Mary Storer born around 1785 who might well have been the recipient of this keepsake. Whether Lear's "recollection" of this hymn refers to him recalling a hymn he himself had written years before or to a hymn written by another is not clear and certainly warrants further research. A most unusual and extremely interesting document. unknown

Octavo bound in full contemporary calf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine red morocco spine label. In very good condition with period recipes affixed to the front free endpaper with a pin. Scarce and desirable. One of the most popular American cookbooks of the 19th century Mrs. N.K.M. Lee's The Cook's Own Book contains a compendium of of recipes compiled from diverse British and American sources as well as many of the Boston housekeeper's own recipes. The book became so popular it was published in at least a dozen different printings between 1832 and 1865. The book contains recipes for cooking meat fish fowl soups gravies and pastries which were published or invented between 1802 and 1832; particularly the very best of those in the Cook's Oracle Cook's Dictionary and other systems of domestic economy. New York 1787. Rare first edition of the definitive and most important work in the Anti-Federalist canon; the antithesis of the The Federalist Papers. Octavo bound in the original calf over original boards with six raised bands edges speckled red. In very good condition. An exceptional example. On November 8 1787 the New York Journal began to advertise a new pamphlet entitled Observations Leading to a Fair Examination of the System of Government Proposed by the Late Convention; and to Several Essential and Necessary Alterations in It. In a Number of Letters from the Federal Farmer to the Republican. This pamphlet contained the first five Federal Farmer letters dated October 8 to 13. The first edition was replete with errors and a second corrected printing appeared within a week. Among the Federalists Alexander Hamilton as Publius Edward Carrington and Noah Webster acknowledged the Federal Farmer as in Hamilton's words the "most plausible" Anti-Federalist. Only one Federalist Timothy Pickering took the time to develop a complete critical response to the Federal Farmer. Though this was not published during the course of the constitutional debates it survives in a personal letter. Pickering described the Federal Farmer as "a wolfe in sheep's cloathing" and too focused on a misplaced fear of aristocracy. The work has been attributed to Richard Henry Lee a presiding officer of the Continental Congress writing under the pseudonym 'Federal Farmer'. Through these the first five letters the Federal Farmer argues that the plan of the Constitution while claimed to be a federal system and seeming to be so in some respects will in the end annihilate the states by consolidating them into one national government. This concern over consolidation was among the most important of the Anti-Federalist objections to the Constitution; they saw the destruction of state sovereignty as inimical to freedom. Honest federalists in the view of the Federal Farmer wished for the substantial preservation of the state governments but sought a federal government that was more than merely advisory. The letters indicate that the Federal Farmer ascribed to the compact theory of federalism. The Federal Farmer letters are among the best-written and convincing pieces in the Anti-Federalist canon and make regular appearances in collections of Anti-Federalist writing. Mild bit of soiling; minor mounting trace on blank 4th leaf. On ornate "Executive Chamber" letterhead Lee replies to a cryptic request. In part: "Your favor to the Governor is received. I am directed to say that he cannot give you the desired information By applying to Genl. Meigs Q.M. General U.S. Army you can probably ascertain when the book can be found."
