Printer's device on title page. A rather carefully produced edition finely ornamented and illustrated with wide margins. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Raised band spine decorated. Red morocco title label. Worn headcaps. Upper joint cracked. 2 corners slightly bumped. This history of Calvinism presented as a major heresy generated numerous complaints among Protestants; it takes the form of a chronicle from the year 1520 to the Edict of Nantes in 1598. In the foreword the author recalls that he has just been expelled by the Pope from the Jesuit order to which he belonged; indeed his virulent defense of Louis XIV which he reiterates in this work placed him in direct opposition to the Pope. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with on the verso the numbered stamp of the deluxe issue some pale foxing marginally affecting the figure. Magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential very deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but rather to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful impression. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and pasted on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. A collective edition from Liège in 1849 would include these three parts but a fourth part on interior and exterior decorations of buildings would be published in 1853. This first volume bears no indication on the title page of volume numbering or part because undoubtedly at the time it was published the volumes to come were not yet planned or decided upon. Contemporary half brown sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with fillets. Spine rubbed and worn. Uncut paper. Some spotting in lower margin and at lower right corner. Interesting publication tracing civil architecture under the Restoration the buildings and houses having all been constructed between 1816 and 1834. This edition was refined by Platel and considerably expanded. The first edition was the only one published during the author's lifetime in 1664 in one folio volume. Bindings in full dark brown glazed mottled calf spine with raised bands decorated with animal tools red morocco title labels. Unidentified arms on the boards possibly of a town or the Oormsgard family but non-French arms with a lion facing forward and not in profile as usual holding a castle. Copy complete with the frontispiece. Volume I has the upper joint cracked two-thirds of the way and both headcaps worn the other 7 volumes are in good condition with various minor defects. Volume 2 a tear with loss to the upper headcap small damage to the joints. Volume VI a tear with slight loss to the upper headcap. Volume VII lower joint cracked and open for one-third. Volume VIII a tear to the upper headcap with small loss 10 cm splits to both joints. Handsome copy nonetheless. P. BrunelR Wetstein hardcover

Three pages in black ink on a double sheet with his autograph address on the verso as well as the stamp of the Grande Armée and a broken wax seal armorial with the cipher ""LD"" on grand mantle and Marshal's batons under crown. Tears from opening affecting two words on the third page. After Davout's brilliant personal victory at Auerstedt the battles of Jena Eylau and Friedland which ended the war against the fourth coalition Davout reaps the fruits of his success. Covered with honors and benefits by the Emperor he enjoys his vast lands as the new Governor General of Poland. Benefiting from Napoleon's generosity which makes him the most endowed marshal of the Empire Davout intends to acquire the Hôtel de Monaco on rue Saint-Dominique previously occupied by the ambassador of the Sublime Porte: ""Tu as dû recevoir déjà les 300.000 F que l'empereur me fait donner précisément pour faire l'acquisition d'un hôtel à Paris. Ainsi ce nouveau bienfait de mon souverain ne pouvoit venir plus à propos"" ""You must have already received the 300000 F that the emperor gives me precisely to acquire a hotel in Paris. Thus this new benefit from my sovereign could not come more opportunely"". He entrusts the purchase and furnishing to his dear wife Aimée Leclerc: ""je m'en repose sur ma petite Aimée pour cette acquisition je çais qu'elle partage mes goûts"" ""I rely on my little Aimée for this acquisition I know that she shares my tastes"" . Having no less than 18% of the Polish territories taken back from Prussia Davout writes to her wanting to sell a mill that was part of the ancient principality of Lowicz west of Warsaw in order to cover the expenses of his Parisian purchase. Also taking advantage of the inalienability attached to the Emperor's donations Davout plans to protect his wife's château at Savigny sur Orge by using the funds given by the Emperor to pay its debts. ""Je viens de recevoir ta lettre de Savigny. Celle que tu m'annonces m'avoir écrit la veille ne m'est point parvenue ma chère amie ainsi tes craintes se sont réalisées et le commissionnaire l'aura perdue. Tu me dis que si mon projet étoit d'acheter un hôtel le moment seroit assez favorable. Tu as dû recevoir déjà les 300.000 F que l'empereur me faitt donner précisément pour faire l'acquisition d'un hôtel à Paris. Ainsi ce nouveau bienfait de mon souverain ne pouvoit venir plus à propos ; je m'en repose sur ma petite Aimée pour cette acquisition je çais qu'elle partage mes goûts et qu'elle donnera la préférence à un hôtel propre qui n'exigera pas une grande représentation à un autre qui en exigerait une. Two and a half pages in black ink on a double sheet. Fold marks inherent to mailing. Very likely unpublished letter ""the intimate correspondence of Marshal Davout ceases from August to November 1807"" incorrectly states the Marquise de Blocqueville in Le Maréchal Davout prince d'Eckmühl raconté par les siens et par lui-même addressed to his beloved wife sister-in-law of Pauline Bonaparte. Settled in his palace halfway between Warsaw and ód Davout now Governor General of the Duchy of Warsaw longs for his wife and their property in Savigny-sur-Orge: ""but although this place is one of the most beautiful in the country it is a hundred thousand leagues from Savigny."" He especially urges the marshal's wife to appear at court and remain close to the Emperor; she was notably in charge of requesting her husband's leave permissions from Napoleon himself. Davout could hardly escape from Poland ""If I could foresee the date of my definitive return"" to deal among other things with the marital affairs of his cousin Hélène Davout: ""I would ask you if our cousin is not greatly attached to her future husband to convince her that in the next six months we will find a more advantageous match for her but events may occur that do not allow for leave."" This latter will eventually marry General François-Louis Coutard in Warsaw in 1808. Very visual letter bearing a beautiful signature of Marshal Davout. A red pencil numbering and a pencil date from a previous bibliographer at the top of the first sheet. A lengthy missive likely unpublished written a week before the signing of the first Treaty of Tilsit which ended the war against the Fourth Coalition. Confident in the successful outcome of the Prussian and Polish campaigns Davout hopes to reunite with his wifethe sister-in-law of Pauline Bonaparteas soon as possible; little did he know the delicate mission the Emperor would soon entrust him with appointing him as the head of the French forces in the new Duchy of Warsaw. Davout provides news of his wife's brother and uncle-in-law: General Desessart Chief of Staff of the Friant Division in the 3rd Corps of the Grande Armée and General Jean-Charles Musquinet de Beaupré attached to the staff of the 3rd Corps of the Grande Armée. He expresses concern for his wife's health and would only learn the following day of the happy birth of his daughter Adèle Napoléone. A highly visual letter featuring a striking signature by Marshal Davout. ""1st July Tilsit I have just received my dear Aimée your letters from the 19th and 20th of June. It feels as though I am by your side experiencing all the anxieties that have tormented me in similar situations. My eagerness to learn of the event is extreme. The courage you display as it approaches truly reassures me and dispels the deep worries I could not shake off some time ago. . You must my dear Aimée focus on taking good care of your health so that when I arrive in Paris I find you fully recovered from your confinement and we can enjoy Savigny together for the rest of the beautiful season. For the affairs here are taking such a turn that I can hope to embrace you within two months at the latest. . It seems to me my dear friend that I have never given you cause for such fears but enough on this matter. Let us speak a little of our Joséphine. FRENCHVILLE PENNSYLVANIA PA. Fair. 1862. On offer is an original unique 1862 manuscript relic of the American Civil War being a diary handwritten Louis P. Cayot sometimes Cayatt Cayott who was a French immigrant to the town of Frenchville Pennsylvania. Louis immediately enlisted into Co. B 3rd PA for 3 months mustered out on 7/29/61 and then he mustered into Co. G 51st PA on 10/17/1861 and in his own hand: General Reno Division General Burnside Expedition Camp Franklin New Berne North Carolina. Historians researchers and collectors of the era will find the book fully written and sometimes overwritten Louis never missing a day and even filling the memorandum section with more narrative. He participated in many battles with the 51st and relates the death of General Jesse Reno under whose command Cayot served. Recruited in Clearfield County with a small contingent of sixteen men and enlisted by Peter A. Gaulin who was promoted to captain of Company "G". A major portion of these were enlisted in October 1861 for the regular three years service. On January 6th 1862 the regiment embarked for Roanoke Island where they participated in the operations then the expedition of Newbern. Afterwards they were engaged at Cedar Mountain and the second battle at Bull Run. At Antietam they were under a terrible fire and made a gallant record in that battle. From Antietam it went before Fredericksburg and subsequently was ordered to Fortress Monroe. It then followed the fortunes and shared the hardships and privations of the Ninth Army Corps and participated in the Knoxville campaign. During the spring campaign it pushed forward where they again met the enemy. At Cold Harbor they sustained heavy losses. The regiment participated in: Poplar Springs Church Ream's Station Hatcher's Run Sharpsburg and in the final attack which resulted in the evacuation of Richmond. It mustered out on the 27th day of July 1865. After the War Cayot moved to Franklin Kansas. The 5 x 3 inch book is in poor shape but all accounted for and legible.
