Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton was published until 1925 with an interruption during the War from 1915 to 1920 due to the mobilization of its editor-in-chief. It consists of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies and is illustrated notably with 573 color plates and 148 sketches representing models by great couturiers. From their publication these luxurious publications ""were aimed at bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes"" Françoise Tétart-Vittu ""La Gazette du bon ton"" in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016. Printed on fine laid paper they use a typeface specially created for the magazine by Georges Peignot the Cochin character adopted in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints are created using the metal stencil technique heightened in colors and some outlined in gold or palladium. The adventure begins in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of the world and fashion - he had already participated in the magazine Femina - decides to found with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff sister of Jean the father of Babar the Gazette du bon ton whose subtitle was then ""Art modes et frivolités"". Georges Charensol reports the words of the editor-in-chief: ""In 1910 he observes there existed no fashion journal that was truly artistic and representative of the spirit of its time. I therefore thought of creating a luxury magazine with truly modern artists . I was certain of success because for fashion no country can rival France."" ""Un grand éditeur d'art. Originally Vogel thus brings together a group of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt; and finally his friends from the École des beaux-arts who are George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel or Charles Martin. Other talents quickly come to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Charles Martin Maggie Salcedo. ST. LOUIS MISSOURI BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS KEWANEE IL. Good. 1926. On offer is an original very charming archive of three 3 small diaries handwritten by Marion Butterwick an artist and designer from Kewanee Illinois. The diaries are dated through the Roaring 20s through to the start of the depression years of 1926 through 1930. Marion Butterwick b. May 5th 1908 - d. January 26th 2004 was well known for her sculptures abstract paintings and sketches. Small books 2 ½" x 3 ½" they cover four years of college with time spent in St Louis and Boston. The first book starts September 13 1926 as she leaves Kewanee Illinois on train and arrives at college in St Louis detailing college life: football game at Taylor Field; rallies and bonfires; gym; homework; study hall; Sunday school; shopping; coming back home from college then returning after semester break; swimming; basketball practice and much more. The second starts with September 11 1927 and another trip from Kewanee to St Louis to college. This diary indicates Marion was much more involved with clubs groups outings and a bit more socializing; plenty notes on classes and daily college life in 1927. Diary 2 is has about half used. The third book she titles: "Year in Boston" 1929-1930. Marion was attending college in Boston as the notes talk again about classes assignments social events of all kinds tea opinions and impressions on Boston church notes socializing travels and sights around Boston. Second half of this diary is labeled as the 2nd year at school in Boston. Diary 3 is like the first book almost full. Researchers and historians will be delighted with this treasure trove on the personal intimate life and development of a known artist in her formative college days. The diaries come with a small desk top holder. All are covered in a fabric which has started to fray in a few places. 1968 Texan Woman's Descriptive Travelogue of a 6 Month Long Journey by Train and Ship Throughout Western Europe
Texas Western Europe New York: Texas New York TS Hanseatic Western Europe. Good. 1968. Hardcover. On offer is delightful travel diary describing a 6 months long trip throughout Europe in the late 1960s. The author of this travel diary is Marion Estelle Drake. She was born in 1911 and lived her life in San Antonio TX. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 92. The diary covers an extended trip she took to Europe in 1968. She went by train to Port Everglades and there on Apr 22nd she and some friends boarded the TS Hanseatic for their trip. After a one-day stop in New York City they sailed to Europe. After stops in Southampton and Cherbourg she reached her final destination at Cuxhaven Germany. From there she crisscrossed Europe visiting major cities and places of interest: "Arrived Heidelberg 7: 15 AM. Betsy's friend Lt. Col & Masie Buchanan Buck met us. Buchanans took me to Officers Club in Patrick Henry Village . They also picked up two friends from Okinawa now living in Bath England. . Had dinner at Vogelswek Officers Club then went to Officers Club at Ramstein AFB and then to Spinsadel for a beer. The Spinsadel spinning Wheel is in a building which dates from the 1600's" May 4; "Left Copenhagen by train at 7: 33 AM. Went to Helsingon where train was put on ferry for crossing to Halsingborg Sweden. Route went through much of the lake country and was beautiful with all the fir and birch trees." June 19; "Took another city tour this morning in another direction. Then at 2 PM took a tour to the Trossachs and Lock Lamond at Balmaha. The highlands country is beautiful & I'm sure the mountains are even more picturesque further north." July 28; "When they raised the curtains on the ferry this AM we were at Corfu a beautiful sight. All day we sailed along the Greek coast . Arrived at Athens at 11: 25 PM & the cab driver couldn't find the hotel. When he turned down dark dingy streets I was concerned." Sept 28; "A 'tour' of the city turned out to be only the Royal Palace and the Prado Museum. . Particularly enjoyed the Goyas.tho my favorite was Velasquez' Crucifixion. After lunch at the hotel we headed for Salamanca" Oct 10. Her last entry is dated Nov 10th and has her still in Europe - back again to Paris. This is where her travel diary ends. This is a well-written travelogue that covers an extensive amount of western Europe. It offers an excellent description of a Europe that has completely rebuilt itself in the 20 years following WWII. For genealogists her diary is replete with names of friends and acquaintances ans well as people she met on her travels throughout Europe. Measuring 6.75 inches by 4.25 inches it contains 66 pages of notes plus an address index. It is 100% complete. The cover is an aquamarine leather decorated with sequins and is in excellent condition. The binding is in good condition as are the pages. Like the Tabula Aurea golden table of Bergama for the work of Thomas Aquinas the Thesaurius Ciceronianus is the indispensable lexicon for reading Cicero's enormous corpus and the essential element for its study particularly for teaching it. The Renaissance found its great classic in Cicero it would exhume manuscripts and editions would abound; he is the least contested and most studied Latin author both by the religious and civil worlds hence the necessity of this decisive lexicon for the correct reading of his work. On offer are two 2 handwritten manuscript personal diaries of Marjorie Goss an approximately 10 year old school girl who lived in Marietta Ohio representing the years 1913 in one book and 1914-1916 in a second book. She attended Marion Grade School. Her very legible cursive writings detail her daily life with a great deal of local history and genealogy. She reports smallpox in her class and a doctor providing 'vaxinations' but Marjorie couldn't as she 'has bad blood'; wind storms killing 100s of people; preparations for an expected flood and the damages done by the flood; going to Liman Howe's moving pictures; playing farmer and Carlos choosing her for wife; the sad lingering illness of Aunt Allie; going to the Hippodrome in Columbus; celebrating Marietta Day and much much more. Marjorie Goss was the daughter of Alice W. nee Farquhar and Joe Goss who used to live in Zanesville but ended up in Marietta East Cleveland and eventually Mount Gilead. This is a lovely charming and informative look at pre-World War I piece of Americana and all the more being from this bright young girl. ROSWELL NEW MEXICO. Good. 1908. On offer are a super group of eight 8 original early 20th Century manuscript diaries handwritten by the young Marjorie Mabie who was born in 1895 and grew up in Roswell New Mexico in the early part of the century. Her family is well noted in local Roswell history having moved from Independence Iowa and once settled in Roswell they owned a number of well-known businesses. Marjorie's father at various times had a number of responsible public positions within the local community. Miss Mabie was an enthusiastic writer the notebook style diaries are well filled save for one about 1/3rd full dated 1908 through 1913. Six of the diaries are all about her life in Roswell but one smallish diary is specific to a 1929 trip to California. Marjorie does a super job detailing her life and times in pre War New Mexico. Life as a student in a small town for this typical 'all American girl' is filled with school friends activities family and Church. Rivalries in sports between the High School and the Institute travelling about with her gaggle of girlfriends and the simple pleasures from baseball to going to the dressmaker are detailed. Here are some snippets: "Wednesday the 25th. Ironed in the morning. The tailor shop had an explosion. Luther was burned to death. Talked to Florence and Jamie on the phone in the afternoon. Went to the library in town. Got a letter. July 1 Lilia came by before nine in the buggy and I went up to office with her. Then went and took my painting lesson. Frank was up at noon. Finished my dress in the afternoon and Mila came down and covered my buttons for me it sure looks dandy the skirt is pink and the coat is pink and white striped voile with pink cuffs and collar. Friday the 10th. Had a test in sewing. Had assembly at 11:30 and practiced yells. Bill and I went to town and got my megaphone. We went to the high school and met Lilia and Holly we went to the football game. It was a good game in the score was 0-0. The Institute always beat us before and we are going up. Bill Lomax broke his collarbone but no high school boys were hurt. We went to get them some candy at Nolans. We walked up north away until Milo came along in their car and took us all up there and us girls back after." On offer is a sensational original scrapbook and group of ephemera related to both the 1901 Pan-American minor focus and 1904 Louisiana Purchase major focus Expositions of the publicity superintendent and man responsible for the public faces of the Fairs being a scrapbook of his incoming correspondence including several typed and signed letters from William Buchanan the Director General of Pan-American Exposition handwritten notes news and magazine clippings photos there is a wonderful F.P. Stevens aerial photo of 1904 fairgrounds looking east documents and other ephemera tucked and tipped in regarding the Fairs making for an original unique behind the scenes look. Compiled and created by Mark Bennitt sometimes Bennett a highly successful writer who became involved with both the 1901 Pan-American and 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expositions as the Publicity Superintendent. While the book goes a very long way in detailing the Fairs it is obviously Mr. Bennitt's personal scrapbook and it is apparent from the outset that Mr. Bennitt was a brilliant hire for those responsible for the Fairs' success as witnessed by the clippings related to his hiring and personal background as befits a man of success and proud of his ongoing accomplishments but that stated Mark was a master of his craft and the book tells the story of the machinations to making the Fairs and the man who made them publicity successes. Of particular interest will be that the book provides a mirror view of the Fairs as seen by the outside public while for the historian also providing a look at the Fairs from the inside. We note: Near the back are some dozen pages of later writings of Bennitt's sojourn up the West coast in 1906. Updating form sent out by "Who's Who in America" for their 1930-31 edition on orange stock with Markham's 2" X 3" biographical entry from the previous edition affixed onto the blank center area. Markham has written on the wide margin "is frequently called the leader of the Democratic movement in American poetry" and "Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters" plus one minor correction. At the bottom he signs and gives his address. An editor has made marks and drawn lines in green ink through most of Markham's additions; two checkmarks near the signature barely touch two letters; there are several other editor's marks in pencil and red pencil. 1961 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN HAND ILLUSTRATED SCRAPBOOK AND TRAVEL JOURNAL OF ONE GERMAN MAN'S TRIP HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD
ASEA ABOARD THE HIPPER. Very Good. 1961. On offer is the super original manuscript journal and travel diary of a young German sailor in training aboard school frigate 'Hipper' with an escort being the school frigate Spee the namesakes of both ships were scuttled during World War II - the Spee in 1939 the Hipper in 1945. Beginning January 5th until February 8th they are in "cadet training" in the harbor at Kiel Germany near the north coast east of Denmark. They do go to sea on training maneuvers but only for a few hours at a time. Each of the cadets rotates through various duties and watches. "Clean Ship" is mentioned a lot night watch on deck and the usual naval watches. There is mention of provisioning the ship and there are photos of beer being loaded. On Thursday February 9 1961 they get ready to leave the harbor - lots of relatives come to see them off. The writer of the journal's father brother and sister come - he mentions that his mother is in hospital. When they depart at 10 am there is a large colorful mass of people on the pier. From this point on he notes latitude and longitude degrees and the time 1200 with every entry. He mentions passing between Dover and Calais February 11 in the English Channel and Casablanca February 17 the Canary Islands on February 18. On February 21st he talks about crossing the equator and the ceremonies that take place There's a type-written memorandum dated February 23 1961 from the ship's doctor with cautions and tips on how to handle being in the tropics. On Thursday February 23 they are in Porto al Pedro then Porto Grande then Cabo Verde - where he writes about asking if Cabo Verde is a part of Portugal or a Portuguese colony. He makes a comment about the teacher saying something that he didn't understand. The teacher says it doesn't matter it's better that way. Then in English: "We cannot say and discuss all things we are thinking about because the walls have got ears." On Wednesday March 1 he makes a comment about the fleas they brought on board in Porto Grande - lots of the crew have bites. He learns that the next day the Admiral's flag is to be raised - Admiral Triton is to come aboard to see the preparations for the christening. There's a typewritten sheet with orders for Thursday March 2nd 1961 - with times and duties outlined. The ceremonial inspection etc. was to begin at 16:30. There's also an unused $10 stamp from Cabo Verde it's nested in that page. Penedos de Sao Pedro e Sao Paulo - an archipelago of cliffs that stretch out into the sea of the coast of Brazil. On Friday March 3 the "Equator Crossing Christening" by His Majesty Neptune is to take place at 9 am. They arrived in Rio de Janeiro on March 10. The following days until March 15 when they departed are descriptions of his impressions of Rio and the girls he met. A typewritten memo about shopping in Buenos Aires cautioning against shopping without knowing the shops and recommending that the crew accept the advice and help of resident Germans who would be able to suggest suitable gifts for loved ones back home. The memo provides names and addresses of shops restaurants and public transportation methods. There's a declaration signed by Mr. Behrendt on March 21 acknowledging that he owes the government .96 DM for losing 3 teaspoons. They arrive in Buenos Aires on Friday March 24. He's collected "souvenirs" - a menu with handwritten prices and daily specials cigar wrappers a city map Argentinian stamps a 10-peso note a candy or chewing gum wrapper and a post-card picture of the Admiral Graf Spee battle ship burning presumably in 1939 a price list from a liquor store a cardboard coaster some tickets addresses of women and a newspaper clipping a receipt and a type-written news report that says "for authorized use only". They depart from Buenos Aires on Sunday April 2nd Easter Sunday in the afternoon. There's a loose leaf inserted that one one side has the "Serenity" prayer in German and on the other side from a resolution of the German Catholic Youth Movement of June 19 1960 discussing the political correctness of the various names by which the former East German Republic which is on their list of no-no's was referred to and makes two recommendations for what would be acceptable and appropriate. By the entry of Saturday April 15 there's pamphlet about the Amazon region in German. Between pages 72 and 73 there's a type-written sheet that appears to be a variety-show program by the ship's crew. On Tuesday April 18 they are Belem do Para on the Amazon Estuary. There is a receipt from a hotel restaurant. They stop in Trinidad Port of Spain Porto Azul. La Guaira Venezuela. The last entry in the book is Sunday May 7th. There are later entries on other sheets of paper and it looks like Markus Behrendt was attempting to write about his experiences and publish or self-publish them. There are a number of beginnings of either short stories or memoirs and of course the letter he received from the printer which provided a quote for various quantities various page counts of a letter-sized A4 book including a linen-bound and embossed cover. His writing is articulate and insightful he's not just reporting what he's seen and done but also includes some commentary - his feelings about things and his thoughts about them. Superbly informative our writer using hand drawn maps colored flags tipped in photographs with explanations of his voyage and service. Littered throughout with letters postcards technical details ship's progress reports all presented with panache make for a first class scrapbook and relic of the Post World War II era. The book is overstuffed 12 x 8 inches with over 100 pages almost completely filled in the trip records the boats course: Kiel to Porto Grande to Rio Buenos Aires Belem Port of Spain La Guaira Port Royal Savannah Punta Delgadi and final return to Kieln makes for a near epic journey. Historians and collectors of this notorious ship will undoubtedly recognize the uniqueness of this journal.
