Reverend Cotton Mather Autograph Manuscript of a Sermon.
Boston n.d. 1685–1723. Rare late 17th to early 18th century autograph manuscript of a sermon or devotional essay in the hand of the "first American Evangelical" Puritan clergyman Cotton Mather. Duodecimo comprising two bifolia prepared from a folded and cut sheet of paper to a total of 8 pages penned in dark brown ink very densely written as is usual with Mather two columns with notes and glosses in the left column the text in sections I-VIII the numeral III apparently used twice several thousand words in all. An unusually lengthy manuscript likely written while Mather was assisting his father Increase as the preacher at the Second Church of Boston 1685–1723. Mather was one of the preeminent American intellectuals of the era. He was not simply a theologian and philosopher but was deeply interested in the sciences conducting experiments on inoculation against smallpox plant breeding meteorology and a wide variety of other topics in a broad range of disciplines. He was a member of the Royal Society of London in large part because of his botanical researches which were reported in his book Curiosa Americana. Although his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials has complicated his legacy he remains in many respects one of the most intellectually curious and progressive figures of colonial America. The text of the present manuscript is in large part a theological analysis of the implications of the Doctrine of the Divine Decree in which Mather speaks out against what he sees as the sophistry of the moral position "If all is predestined why should I make any effort for my salvation" This he refutes in detail in these pages with much apparatus and inspirational text ending his argument on the words "Methinks then we should long for heaven! Oh my companions if you would not long for Heaven I can foretell that there are more sorrows on earth to come upon you . Will you long to be where ye weary are at rest. But then Oh Lord how long how long how long!" With this ringing conclusion to the final page the text ends apparently complete. Given the small format of the manuscript it seems likely that it was used in delivering a sermon or homily. In near fine condition with scattered small areas of ink erosion noted. Housed in a custom modern cloth case and accompanied by a complete transcription of the text; with a letter dated September 29 1937 on New York Public Library stationery signed by the late Victor Paltsits Keeper of Mss. indicating that he authenticates the manuscript as in Mather's hand and a note signed by Louis Henry Cohn of House of Books regarding provenance. New York 1842. Rare hand-colored example of Mather's monumental pre-Civil War wall map of Long Island the finest and largest map of Long Island of the period. One page two sheets joined from the topographical surveys of J. Calvin Smith and lithographed by Endicott. Issued with Mather's 1843 Geology of New York the map offers fine detail of the island before the intense late 19th century population growth and the completion of the Long Island Railroad terminates here at Half Hollow Hills. The areas from Westhampton through Montauk are particularly well delineated. In very good condition with toning and closed tears. The piece measures 53 inches by 25 inches. William Williams Mather 1804–1859 was an American geologist educator and mapmaker whose cartographic and scientific contributions played a notable role in the early development of geological surveying in the United States. Trained at the United States Military Academy at West Point Mather combined rigorous scientific methodology with practical fieldwork producing some of the most detailed geological maps of his time. As the first State Geologist of Ohio he directed the Ohio Geological Survey 1837–1844 creating comprehensive maps and reports that advanced understanding of the region’s mineral resources stratigraphy and topography. Mather’s cartographic work reflected the growing 19th-century emphasis on systematic mapping for economic development infrastructure planning and scientific knowledge. unknown

On offer is a wonderful original scrapbook and trip diary created and compiled by West Chester State Normal School student Matilda Schwabe from West Chester Pennsylvania of her senior class trip to the Capitol in the spring of 1910. The book has 52 pages filled with ephemera and handwritten entries. A very charming girl she would mark an "x" or "o" on many of the postcards and then write about what she was seeing. The "x" or "o" was usually where she was standing or sitting at the time the entry was written. She also gets to meet and shake hands with President Taft. The ephemera consists of postcards and other art pieces tipped pinned or slipped into homemade slots. None are glued. There are 45 postcards and then 18 other pieces of ephemera. The one that really stuck out to me was the two rocks in an envelope which she says
. "We next walked about the grounds and looked in the shed where we saw his coach George Washington's. These stones came from Martha Washington's flower garden." There are also multi page brochures with numerous pages such as the "Pennsylvania Railroad Guide to Washington" which has 35 pages and a map in the back; a piece of Arlington Hotel Stationery; pressed leaves; ticket stubs and more. Two pieces are engraved brochures showing the Capitol; one the Official Directory for the United States House of Representatives and one a Diagram of the United States Senate. And then there is her narrative. Here are some snippets: 1910 "Thursday morning a five o'clock I began to get ready to set out to Washington. We were given the above card and the tag was fastened to my suitcase This luggage tag is in this scrapbook before we left which was at the time stated above
On the way we went through Wilmington and Baltimore and passed the Susquehanna Brush and Gun Powder Rivers at a distance of about three miles from the Chesapeake Bay. Look for other interesting things on the first pages of the Pennsylvania Railroad guide to Washington on the next page." "We were then taken to the Senate which is in the part marked thus "o" and were given seats in the gallery in the corner opposite the one marked on the next page. Small boys were distributing papers etc. These boys receive salaries of about $90 per month. Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania sat in the seat marked X and Senator Gore of Oklahoma in the one near the door. We arrived for the afternoon session and William P. Frye of Maine opened it with prayer. The Vice President was not there. In giving a motion he would say "All in favor give their consent by saying aye contrary no. The ayes have it" without a stop or giving anyone a chance to speak. There were only a few Senators there because it was not very important business which they were transacting
.All those who wished to were allowed to ascend the dome and I went up. The steps were very steep and narrow. We walked around the dome where I have it marked and had an excellent view of the whole city. Bertha and I started down and when we reached half way we saw a young man who seemed to be trying to slide down the banister. When we reached him we saw it was Jack. He was holding on with two hands and was very nervous
." "The Arlington Hotel and Annex. Vermont Ave. and Lafayette Square. Opposite Executive Mansion. The Annex was at one time Charles Summer's residence. Our room was No. 273 fifth floor the gable windows around the upper end. It contained a large chandelier two separate lights a telephone desk wash stand dresser closet two chairs small table double bed cot and brass bed. Ruth wanted the brass one Mary the cot and I slept with Bertha in the large one. The next morning Ruth massacred about ten. I don't think she cared much for the brass bed then. We had breakfast at seven but were up at six. The paper below came from the desk in the sitting room of the hotel." "As we were leaving five cars filled with pupils from the Philadelphia Normal arrived and we gave our yells. They clapped for us. That evening we had turkey and cranberry sauce for supper after which a party of us went to see the Library of Congress at night. It was splendid. The marble shone wonderfully by the light of the many electric light. We packed our suit cases and went to bed
." "We were lined up outside the Presidents office two by two and had to wait until he had met a number of people before we were permitted to enter. We saw Senator Butler on the steps. Two policemen kept us in line. While standing there a gardener came by and said "You are very anxious to see him. We are tired looking at him." At last we entered and outside the door of the room in which he stood was a desk from which Sue Kline took rubber bands and gave me the one on the card on the next page which a piece of the rubber band is still under the postcard. I was about the tenth to enter and Bertha was behind me. He stood by his secretary to whom we gave our names as we passed. He was so little that I passed him and only realized that he was there when Bertha shook hands with him. I extended mine back but thinking it improper I drew it away. He extended his then and we shook hands. He laughed out loud and I did also. The girls said that when the twentieth had passed him he said "By George there must be a thousand." We were very fortunate because the Philadelphia Normal girls did not get the opportunity of meeting him
." "After dinner we went by trolley to the wharf and boarded a steamer for Mount Vernon. We sat on the top of the steamer and danced when the orchestra played on the deck below. It was beautiful going down on the Potomac and we passed Fort Washington on the way. Mr. Blackburn gave me the above card. The card on the opposite page I bought
Going ashore we were told to return when the whistle blew." "Flowers and Cedar came from Cedarcroft the home of Bayard Taylor. It is not very far from West Chester and takes its name from the numerous Cedar trees which grow on its lawns. Taylor built it and went in debt. It is now a school for boys. I visited it one Sunday in company with Mable Hedrick and Anna Langrell. The conductor took us to Kennett Square and then had to take us back." Egyzio composed on this occasion a learned commentary in this work which obtained the assent of all the antiquarians of Europe. England. Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is an original signature by an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. The signature is that of Matthew Arnold 1822-1888. Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold the famed headmaster of Rugby School and brother to both Tom Arnold literary professor and William Delafield Arnold novelist and colonial administrator. Harold Bloom writes that "Whatever his achievement as a critic of literature society or religion his work as a poet may not merit the reputation it has continued to hold in the twentieth century. Arnold is at his best a very good but highly derivative poet unlike Tennyson Browning Hopkins Swinburne and Rossetti all of whom individualized their voices." The writer John Cowper Powys an admirer wrote that "with the possible exception of Merope Matthew Arnold's poetry is arresting from cover to cover he is the great amateur of English poetry he always has the air of an ironic and urbane scholar chatting freely perhaps a little indiscreetly with his not very respectful pupils." This signature is on a piece of cut paper measuring 2-1/4 x 7/8 inches. It demonstrates age toning and appears to have been taken from a letter. Date unknown. From the day after the 1667 campaign which brought Flanders to France Louis XIV hastened to send ordinances and create Parlements in the conquered cities especially since it was at this date that Parlements were obligated to register royal Edicts. Moreover a procedural code was sent to all jurisdictions of the kingdom. The book gathers royal ordinances and edicts until 1701 thus composing the history of a city and territory that became French. Tournai would return to Austria in 1713 then suffer the same fate as the Austrian Netherlands. The city would be conquered once again by the Revolution and Empire then attached to the kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815. In 1830 finally it was integrated into independent Belgium. Illustrated with many hundreds of half-page woodcuts. pp 14 922 13 the title page is laid down and has slight losses the next leaf is restored at the corner with no loss of text the preliminary index is a bit thumbed and marked a little marginal staining to the last hundred pages a little marginal staining and marking on occasional pages but overall very firm and tight and in better condition than many copies. There are very neat early manuscript notes on many pages mainly limited to the common English names. Contemporary simple lined calf rebacked and with new endpapers in the early twentieth century with the original spine laid down. An inked paper title label on the spine. The Hartland Library copy with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers. RARE. The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland and was a diverse but major collection of herbals archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936 and was eventually dispersed around 2010. This the first edition of a digest of Mattioli's commentaries on Dioscorides expressed in the form of an encyclopedia of plants giving synonyms classification description locale and medicinal qualities and uses. A careful student of botany he described 100 new plants and coordinated the medical botany of his time in his Discorsi "Commentaries" on the Materia Medica of Dioscorides. The first edition of Mattioli's work appeared in 1544 in Italian. In addition to identifying the plants originally described by Dioscorides Mattioli added descriptions of some plants not in Dioscorides and not of any known medical use thus marking a transition from the study of plants as a field of medicine to a study of interest in its own right. In addition the woodcuts in Mattioli's work were of a high standard allowing recognition of the plant even when the text was obscure. A noteworthy inclusion is an early variety of tomato the first documented example of the vegetable being grown and eaten in Europe. There is also an early illustration of a coconut. First Edition. The Hartland Library copy with labels on the front endpaper; and probably Sir Frank Crisp's before that. RARE. Hunt 332. Nissen BBI 1309 . The second edition of the 'Opera' edited by Caspar Bauhin the final and most complete form of Mattioli's texts. It contains also Mattioli's medical writings including the most complete edition of the "Commentarii in Dioscoridem" with many notes and additions by Bauhin. Most of the woodcuts have been copied from the small-size pictures of the Venetian editions. The Hartland Library was formed by the anthropologist and folklorist Edwin Sydney Hartland and was a diverse but major collection of herbals archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936 and was eventually dispersed around 2010. A manuscript note and auction catalogue extract suggests that this was acquired from the Sotheby's sale of Sir Frank Crisp's library November 9th 1919. Hartland would still have been actively buying at this point. Crisp had an equally notable library and a magnificent if slightly eccentric garden at Friar Park complete with a six-metre Matterhorn in the rock garden. Joseph-Marie Durey de Morsan gathered various documents relating to the cardinal in Madrid he showed them to Maubert de Gouvest who bought the collection from him to recast it into a single narrative. It contains historical and political chapters on Spain under Charles VI on the affairs of France and Spain chapters dealing with diverse subjects such as agriculture the navy and the balance of power in Europe. 1913 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ILL FATED 35 YEAR OLD AMHERST MASSACHUSETTS WOMAN
AMHERST MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1913. On offer is a very detailed diary of a woman living in Massachusetts in the early 20th century. Leatherbound this diary measures 4.75 inches by 3.75 inches. It has 365 pages and is 100% complete. The light tan-coloured cover is in very good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. Maud Arnold Bridges was born in 1878 and married William Lawson Bridges. They lived in Amherst MA where they raised their family. Her husband William worked in a creamery/ice house. Maud had been ill following unspecified injuries sustained from saving the life of a child according to a news clipping in the diary. She is 35 years old when she writes this diary. She passed away in 1918 at the age of 40.The diary is packed with the small everyday details of a woman running her busy household. From context it also appears that she and her husband take in boarders which adds to her busy days. It is replete with references to family and friends and the many tasks that fill her hours. . Swept the bedroom thoroughly and did a lot of general work. D washed the diningroom windows for me. Carried Lillian a piece of squash. She came in here for few minutes. Rec'd paper from Mrs. Maltz. Went up to sew with D. Got a lot done in my dressing sack. Just as pretty as it can be. Felt very much better today and accomplished a lot . Feb 21 Cloudy very windy Horrid day. I washed and did quite a little general work. Will feels some better but coughs badly. Wrote to Blanche. Received lovely Easter cards from Jessie and her Ma and from Blanche and one from Mildred and Eva. Went in to call on Lillian's cousin Mrs. Jones - very pleasant but nothing brilliant and about as homely as Lillian not quite such a mouth. Wrote to Jessie Mar 24 Such a treat to see the sun. Will got our back room in order again and we got our things back in our room. Worked all day getting settled. Lillian and John came in twice after church hinting and expecting an invitation to dinner which they didn't get. After dinner Will and I read and it seemed so good to have it quiet again . May 25 And so it goes -her diary is filled with daily chores and interactions with people. She mentions excursions in the Amherst and to nearby places such as Northampton Springfield and Holyoke MA. Her days are simply jammed with housekeeping tasks baking sewing etc. She records births sicknesses and deaths within her circle as well as a constant back and forth with visitors. Her focus is home family and friends. There are no references to events in the larger world such as Woodrow Wilson's becoming the 28th President of the United States or the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg which attracted thousands of veterans. This is an excellent glimpse into the working of an ordinary American urban home in early 20th century America.
