Prize gone Note: The Greek Platonist Maximus Tyrius ca. 125-185 AD was an itinerant philosopher/lecturer who lived during the Second Sophistic and left us 41 dissertations dialexeis on theological ethical and philosophical subjects. The lectures were delivered in Rome apparently during the reign of Commodus 180-92. They deal with ethics physics theology and epistemology but are not great literature nor specimina of great learning. Themes are for example: 'die Lust hêdonê 29-33 sokratische Liebe 18-22 platonische Theologie 11 'daimones' 8-9 Gebet 5 Weissagung und freier Wille 13 das Böse 41 und Wiedererinnerung 10'. Neue Pauly 71074/75 Maximus Tyrius 'was well read in Greek literature but apparently not in Greek philosophy except in Plato of whom he claimed to be a follower. His lectures show no philosophical originality and are simple eloquent exhortations to virtue decked out with quotations chiefly from Plato and Homer'. OCD 2nd ed. p. 658 As a philosophic orator he is comparable with contemporaries like Dio Chrysostomus and Apuleius. He was widely read by the humanists of the 15th century e.g. Poliziano Bessarion Lascaris Reuchlin. The 'editio princeps' was published in 1557 by the French scholar/publisher Henricus Stephanus. The next important and authorative edition was published in 1607 by the Dutch classicist Daniel Heinsius 1580-1655. The English scholar John Davies Fellow of Queens' College at Cambridge based the Greek text of his edition on that of Stephanus he tells us in the 'praefatio' and adopted the Latin translation of Heinsius with corrections and with notes and 2 useful indexes of his own. p. 4 verso John Davies or Joannes Davisius 1679-1732 studied at Queens College of which he was elected fellow and subsequently became Rector or Praeses in 1717. He chiefly devoted his attention to the philosophical works of Cicero. His editions show great learning and knowledge of the history of and the systems of ancient philosophy. Davies also produced editions of Caesar Minucius Felix and Lactantius. The pages 329-386 contain the Greek text of Alcinous' handbook of Platonism 'Introductio in Platonicam philosophiam'; the pages 387-408 contain Diogenes Laertius on Plato. The second part contains Heinsius's Latin translation of Maximus Tyrius and Alcinous; added are 33 pages with a Latin translation of the earlier mentioned Pythagorean fragments made by the Dutch scholar Willem Canter. At the end 27 pages filled with Apuleius's 'De Deo Socratis liber qui Maximi Dissertat. de eodem respondet'. Part 3 contains the notes of Heinsius. Heinsius based his edition of Maximus Tyrius on that of Stephanus but 'quae corrupta erant emendavimus quae obscuriora leviter illustravimus'. Part 1 leaf 6 recto But he was a conservative and reserved text critic 'Nobis' he explains 'temeritas nunquam placuit et si quid in autoribus peccandum est timidus videri malo quam audax'. Part 3 leaf a4 recto/verso Heinsius also produced the Latin translation and notes. In a 'Lectori' to the third part Heinsius tells that the French scholar Isaac Casaubon sent him a manuscript of Maximus Tyrius's 'Dissertationes'. It arrived too late for amending the Greek text and Latin translation but Heinsius used it for and in his notes. Heinsius received also some excerpts excerpta quaedam of Sixtus Arcerius and the Heidelberg professor Marquard Freher 1565-1614 sent him a manuscript from the Palatine Library Provenance: Armorial bookplate of the barony 'Sinclair' a shield divided into 4 fields flanked by 2 griffons a baron's coronet on top above which a peer's helmet with mantlings and a crest consisting of a swam on its nest. LAYTON UTAH UT. Good. 1938. On offer is a super original 1938 - 1942 manuscript diary handwritten by Maxine Hadlock Layton later Johansen of Layton Utah. The diary commences at an important juncture for any young woman; almost 16 years old at the beginning from the Depression Era to the beginning of World War II the author already a practical teenage girl-next-door to a College age woman finding her place in the world. Entries range from the simple: "June 29th 1938. Dad gave us 20¢ to go up town with Naomi C. to buy some candy." To a New Years entry that includes pop corn and lemon aid. Religion test in school much different than what everyone expected etc. Interestingly we note that she and many others go to the Joseph Smith Building to hear President Roosevelt speech the day after the heinous surprise attack by the Japanese on December 7th 1941. Her online obituary: Bountiful: Maxine Hadlock Layton Johansen 80 passed away August 22 2002. She was born January 25 1922 in Layton Utah to Lionel and Bessie Hadlock Layton. Maxine graduated from Davis High School and BYU and worked as a secretary in Ogden for the railroad. Having married a career army officer she traveled extensively living in many states Germany and Hawaii before it was a state. She especially loved her stay in Hawaii where she learned to hula and loved the Hawaiian people. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints she was Primary president in Massachusetts and in the Relief Society presidency. Maxine served as a Temple Ordinance Worker in the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples and served a mission with her husband in the Atlanta Georgia Temple in 1992-93 where she learned the ordinances in Spanish. Maxine had a gentle and loving nature and enjoyed helping the missionaries and college students in her ward. She is survived by four children: Myrth Ann Michael Mills Kingsport TN; John Jackie Johansen West Jordan; Jill Robben Hixson Sandy; Leilani Eric Shepherd Lee's Summit MO; 16 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren one brother James J. Layton Layton; her twin sister Kathleen Wintle Honeyville; and another sister Lucile Giddings Stanwood WA. She was preceded in death by her husband Willard W. Johansen her parents a sister Ione Layton and a brother Lionel Bud Layton. Many of them give a summary of themselves on another page and some included photos of themselves. There are a total of 19 black & white photos of the students some showing the houses and cars of the times. Included ephemera: May's proof photos; a group photo taken in the 1940s or 1950s of May and 9 of her former classmates with names and "homecoming" thusly a reunion photo; a 1906 post card from May to her aunt in Danville Kentucky that identifies that May lived at the Kentucky Female Orphan School in Midway Kentucky; a class schedule and a composition she wrote for class. SIERRA MADRE CALIFORNIA CA. Good. 1968. On offer is the interesting original 1943 manuscript diary of Maybelle Caley Barker. A treasure trove of narrative making for a fascinating look at gender or women's' issues and the changing roles and perceptions of women in the mid-20th Century a time of unprecedented change and the backdrop of a world at war. For a social historian the diary opens a window of insight into the issues she thought were important and worthy of commenting upon. She didn't shy away from social issues either; although how she tempered her actions reflected a wider social view of women in society. When a male friend published an article in a local newspaper critical of women she joined other women in writing letter of complaint we girls are writing Stan "letters of protest re his column sending them from other towns under assumed names . I signed it "Irate Husband". Sept 23 She went on to quote the following rhyme - even though my wife's heels are high and her seams are crooked she makes swell pie and I love her - so what are you going to do about it." The diary also recounts the day-to-day activities in Barker's life throughout 1943. These focused on personal issues health matters status of family and friends and social gossip. Here are some snippets: "Got Gov check and Pension chk May 31 her husband an Army Captain in WWI was deceased; "went after meat - stood in line a half hour. Sliced bread has come back - thank goodness. Wrote H her sister Hilda and N her niece Nadine a letter Mar 13; Rained steady all day Am glad I have a stew on hand so I do not have to look for food Letter from Hilda Jan 22." However she wasn't unmindful of great events swirling around her. Attending Hollywood Bowl appearance of Madame Chiang Kai-shek she notes: Surrounding the Bowl was heavily guarded by soldiers as they looked for a Jap invasion Apr 4. She goes on to record that Spencer Tracy opened the program. introducing Henry Fonda USN in sailors uniform . Mary Pickford dressed in yellow presented flowers. Many other individuals are noted such as Gov Earl Warren later Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and principal author of the Warren Report concerning the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It appears there is a Caley Family Papers collection at the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary Williamsburg VA. The diary is in good condition. The entries a combination of pencil and pen are legible and easy to read. The diary is hard-bound and the binding is in good condition. Titled "Epitaphs" the first example goes "of a philanthropist who after a long & useful life was impartially praised even by those newspapers which he did not own." Some deletions additions and corrections throughout. Signed 1¼" long at the conclusion. 1928 - 1929 ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES OF AN ENGLISH ENGINEER'S TIME TIN MINING TIGER HUNTING AND TRAVELING IN SIAM
SIAM THAILAND SOUTH EAST ASIA. Very Good. 1928. On offer are an interesting pair 2 of 1928 and 1929 original manuscript diaries handwritten by a young English mining engineer named Leslie Arnold Mayo while working in Siam. Using a large page per day 'Roneo Indexed Diaries' he writes approximately 311 entries in the 1928 diary and 235 entries in the 1929 diary ranging from a single line to a full-page usually at least a paragraph or two ending with his return to Dover on 3 October 1929 with occasional entries made while in Europe to the conclusion of the calendar year. The author provides a unique 'yin and yang' look at his time in Asia from the prejudices of a young man of his time and place balance with the topic of the perils of going native; the challenges of mining in contrast with the lure of making one's living abroad particularly in an exotic locale such as Siam. Mayo appears to have no little responsibility managing and working a tin mine near Langsuan then at Kopah in Thailand as he does the books calculates expenses and doles out wages writes daily reports some with drawings manages equipment repairs and hires the Siamese and Chinese 'coolies'. Mayo answers directly to the Superintendent of Mines and in 1928 received a salary increase. He is also in frequent communication with the Governor and even socializes with him. Beginning on New Year's Day of 1928 we understand he has been in Thailand for some time as he is comfortably situated in a bungalow at the Nai Hoot Juita tin mine in Langsuan Siam and he may have started his job there as early as the summer or autumn of 1926. Mayo does a great job bringing the essence of his life in Siam to the reader as he not only details his work but also his play and other activities: the journals contain many stories of encounters with tigers game hunting the miner's opinions of his contemporaries in the industry as well as the hired hands minor mishaps such as an injury to his knee a weekend spent in Penang and the sorted affairs of his colleagues. Mayo contemplates purchasing options essentially licences in other regions as well as investing in shares in the Australian owned mining company 'Huai Yot' which was involved in gold mining in Malaysia. Other large Australian companies such as 'Nai Hoot' are mentioned and interestingly Australians were the first to introduce dredges into tin mining in Siam in 1907 creating an influx of Western firms. Here are some snippets: "Chinese hari bazaar the coolies decided to do no work because I wouldn't give them a full day for 1/2 day's work. Had some trouble over sacking two." "Took F.R. round the mines dredge & power station & listened to what he had to say. He is a decent fellow a Scot from Edinburgh." "I went down to Tung Song Suratthani for money. Oscar Dorban got in. I was very pleased to see him & we discussed boxing especially his method of drying the samples & weighing them instead of finding their volume by displacement." ". 10 o'clock when I got my money from the bank. Caught the 11 am train to Ronpibon where Langdon met me & drove me out. White was on the train going to Haad Yai" "Received a letter from the OCPD Batu Gajah Office of the Consumer Protection Board inquiring about my pistol he wants me to apply for an export licence - nine months after I left the state." "Took a gang of coolies out to repair a broken bridge on the Langsuan road. had a beer & biscuits. Lazy in the afternoon & then went shooting. I bagged 4 with 6 shots." "A most energetic day. Went to the bore first thing & on my return struck the pipe line so decided to go up to the intake - some walk in all about 10 miles." "I can calmly accept the state of affairs - this life is quite bearable if one has enough work to do during the day. Today I was up late and spent most of the morning with the coolies shifting the dynamo field to the store. Siamese get my goat!" "The tractor with dynamo armature got stuck in the mud just outside the min & I with four coolies waited at Quentin Mooi till 1:30 PM for it. Got the tractor started after much trouble & watched it for 1/4 mile & then went ahead in the lorry from Q.H.H. with some motor starters. the lorry wheel came nearly off so had to walk the rest & send for a new wheel. the two trucks sent yesterday could not be used. they have no brakes. " "Sacked all the Siamese coolies in the morning through not turning up yesterday noon." "The governor called me into his house & gave me tea. Received my provisions from Bangkok I like the American cheese." "Went into Langsuan to answer a few questions of the 'Superintendant of Mines' - all over in fifteen minutes" "Met Clark in Langsuan he has just returned from a prospecting trip of the Chumphon district. " "Paid off my boring coolies luckily I had about 500 spare in the safe. Made lists of the boring tools in store. went for a walk to the dredge on the No.3 mine hole the power house & No.5 mine." "Brown from Nawong Pat is down here he is going to take Jay's place at P.S.H. Jay was nearly murdered on Wed. night at 9:30 o'clock by coolies who got into his room they held his woman & hit him on the head with an axe she escaped & rescued Jay & they had a fight but the coolies got them again & attempted to cut jay's throat - they made a cut 3" long." ".Imagine being tied to a black woman like Cundy - ugh. And now she has adopted a Siamese kid!!! Of course she looks after him well & is I truly believe faithful.I could never do it - pray to God that reason always controls my passion at any rate in that respect."; travels on company business to Penang and elsewhere in Malaya when investigating mining options and taking bores ".The journey took just under three hours & about half the way I rode owing to broken bridges & the amount of water on the road. The cart rocked & swayed over the rutty road & there was an unpleasant smell from the oxen. The driver - an Afgan - was certainly the most villainous looking man I have ever met he was a large & tall man wearing only khaki shorts & a dirty white shirt with a coloured handkerchief at his throat & an automatic on his hip. At Behor I stayed with Dawson - Aussie - & Agar - Irish - his assistant. The former owns a semi lode - semi alluvial mine. They live like natives the animals run all over the "bungalow" coolies walk in at will with their hats on - but it was better than living in a Chinese shop."; a giant iguana shot in his garden ".I've had it skinned the Siamese are having a feast and I shall give it to Mum to make shoes of."; tiger predations ".Clarke was greatly excited.& decided to set four spring guns but some Chinese came in the morning & cleared the undergrowth & built a machane a raised platform used in tiger hunting."; ants in his trousers ".Scratching all morning."; drinking and its attendant nightmares in one being shot by a coolie and set upon by a Chinese whore; his reading Hardy Dickens Hugo Anatole France Zane Grey et al. etc. Note: We list separately a 1932 diary written by Mayo detailing his time surveying in Southern Rhodesia. England. Good with no dust jacket. 1885. Non-Book. On offer is a handwritten copy of a poem by the British poet Jean Inglow 1820-1897 but not in her writing. It is dated 1885 and signed by John Howell c1825-1893 on the bottom right. The page contains two stanza's from this Inglow poem - A Cottage in a Chine. We know they music madeIn heaven ere man's creation; But when God threw it down to us that strayed It dropt with lamentation And ever since doth its sweetness shade With sighs for its first station. Its joy suggests regret Its most for more is yearning; And it brings to the soul that its voice hath met No rest that cadence learning But a conscious part in the sighs that fretIts nature for returning. BIO NOTES: John Howell was the founder of John Howell & Son the leading building and engineering company in Hastings Sussex in the 1860s. The firm engineered churches and other public buildings in the area to the designs of innovative architects including Holy Trinity Church in 1860 to the design of Samuel Sanders Teulon and St. Johns Church Hollington in 1865-1868 for Edward Alexander Wyon. John Howell Jr 1851-1903 constructed the old Gothic Revival Hastings Grammar School building to the design of Jeffery and Skiller in 1883. Howell Senior was a campaigner on behalf of the Liberal party and held a prominent political position in the town from the 1860s to the 1880s. He came to Hastings as a fatherless boy and was the Mayor of Hastings by 1878. Poem is written on one page 4to. Dated and signed by Howell at bottom right.
