Complete Ottoman manuscript of the Qur'an 612 pages written on parchment paper in black margins ruled in black and red 81x132cm enhanced in gilt text entirely in naskh script on 15 lines per page with gilt and polychrome florets between verses flanked by large illuminated floral motifs in the margins of certain leaves finely gilt sura headings. Customary for Qur'ans this copy opens with an elaborately and finely hand-illuminated double-page frontispiece in gilt and deep blue. The rest of the lithographed text is hand colored in gilt and red. The colophon indicates the copy as the work of Mustafa Nazif Kadrgal Efendi dated 1889. Superb Islamic full brown roan binding with a flap mikleb elaborately stamped in gilt with geometric motifs and an elaborate central radiant design gilt flap spine with a palmette frieze some leather missing to corners and rubbed edges. 2 browned pages some foxing and soiling to margins. Between traditional manuscript Qur'ans and printed Qur'ans there was a brief period when lithography was used to finely imitate handwriting. In 1866 Osman Zeki Bey an Ottoman calligrapher opened his Matbaa-i-Osmaniye printing house in Istanbul becoming the first publisher authorized to print Qur'ans. A very fine copy of this Ottoman Qur'an produced at the end of the 19th century the result of a fruitful collaboration between print and calligraphy. Matbaa-i-Osmaniye hardcover

1947 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ILL MAN FIGHTING A TERRIBLE DIVORCE AND CHILD CUSTODY CASE SEEKING HIS DAUGHTER WHO HAS BEEN HIDDEN SOMEWHERE IN ALABAMA OR FLORIDA
ASHLAND DAYTON ORRVILLE OHIO OH. Good. 1947. On offer is an original very intriguing 1947 manuscript diary and journal of a terrible post World War II child custody case and divorce. Unique for the times this was handwritten by an unidentified rural Ohioan who may have been either a Myers or Garver as he identifies 2 uncles. The author tells of his daily life which usually revolved around his large extended family the churches he attended and automobiles which he repaired and worked on all the time though he did do other work including farming. But right from the start the reader sees a pattern begin: the first entry is January 5th where he writes he has loaded up his car went to Ashland by 6:30 pm and then slept on his mother's davenport. He is also sick with a cold that never seems to end. Other entries mention more family travels large amounts of cash buying a car selling a house long and late hours weather reports and concerns and social observations. Yet all the while in the background are his health and the ups and downs of his divorce. He appears to be ill a lot perhaps the stress he sees the doctor many tests different shots and so on. In July he is in trouble with the law who seem only too glad to give him a hard time even though he has legal counsel. A part of the diary tells of his struggles with his own child custody case in which he is trying to get custody of his child. He notes trial dates of which he was never informed. The custody case and visitation get very dramatic as his ex-wife or girlfriend tries hiding the child from him in Alabama. He travels to Jacksonville to talk to the Mayor who took him to the High School where he had traced his daughter Sylvia. He also travels to Alabama and Florida searching for his high school age daughter Sylvia. Later he went to Birmingham to enlist the help of the Sherriff. This whole case would have been very unusual for the time. On offer is a fine diary of a woman living in the Hudson River Valley during the Great Depression. The author of this diary is not explicitly stated. However there are a number of contextual clues that suggest the writer is Myra L Jordan. Jordan was born on Aug 22 1866. She was the second wife of William Burnap Jordan. They lived in Pine Plains NY located in the Hudson River valley south of Albany NY. She passed away in 1953 at the age of 87. She is 63 when she writes this diary. Her diary is very personal focused intensely on here immediate family and friends. She hardly ever comments on events outside of her direct experience and the wider effects of the Depression do not seem to have had an impact on her life. Some excerpts: "Men here to shingle east side. Reynolds to clean up garden. Ordered furnace coal. Wrote Mr. Tuttle who has had and op & is very ill. Jordan back for dinner. & Bill called. Paul for supper & cards." Mar 25; "Pulvers took me to Frank Chases's funeral - very large. Girl Scouts - 26 with Miss Grafe & Mrs. McGregor came on a hike & I told them stories of the old house. Iky had teo clinics in Clinton." June 11; "Dad better but in bed until aft. Vic's folks called in a. M. Jordan and Sisty down in the new car. Got ice cream for supper and staid for our evening illumination. Can't get over the wonder of electric lights." Sept 1; "Went with Jordan & Iky to Kips for 6: 30 dinner with Miss Carter & her friend & the Russian Symphony Choir concert at High School - was lovely ." Dec 3. It is interesting to note that the diary itself was published by Luckey Platt & Co a major retail store in Poughkeepsie NY. The store was a fixture in the region for over 130 years. The book itself carries a variety of articles and information pieces on topics such as dieting plating bridge vitamins etc. For a social historian especially one focused on life during the Depression this diary offers an interesting perspective. It certainly helps fill in some aspects of what life was like during this time of great upheaval in the United States. Measuring 5 inches by 7 inches this hard-cover diary contains 183 pages and is approximately 90% complete. The cover is in good condition as is the binding. The letters in this archive are written by Myron Manson Miller 1859-1949 to his brother Milo H. Miller 1863-1951. Myron and Milo were born to parents Samuel K. Miller 1822-1896 and Silence Ford Ellis 1828-1899 near Hartstown Crawford County PA. Both made a significant impact on Hartstown. Myrons first letter to Milo is dated August 26 1942. At the time Milo and Maude live in Pittsburgh. Maude would soon pass away on September 14 due to complications of diabetes. Myrons early letters are mainly focused on Maudes medical condition and death. The tone of the letters is brotherly loving and helpful. An excerpt: .I have attended a lot of funerals in my time and looked at the dead but I never saw as beautiful a body as Maudes she looked as though she was going to speak to you and the flowers and all arrangements was perfect

Our regards to Florence and Russ. Has Rob got home yet Sept 28 1942. A few months later Milo travels to California to be with his son Ellis and family. Myrons letters are absolutely packed with news. He shares updates from the community in Hartstown his large family his and Sarahs declining health his views on globally significant affairs such as impacts of the war on food supply and costs. Milo seems to be working on a new genealogy research project on the Martzall family Nov 17 1942 letter but we do not learn much about it. The letters are all long between two and seven pages all packed with content. Some excerpts attempt to give the flavour of this impressive archive: .We are to have a big wedding in the UP church here Saturday Dec 19 at 3PM. Rev Haglett the minister is getting married and the community are invented and we expect it will be a swell affair

Nov 20 1945. As the years go on both Myron and Sarah begin declining in health and mobility which Myron mentions in each letter though he maintains a positive spirit. which took the store and barn in was sold to a man by the name of Serfant and he has put in a red and white store so we have two stores now instead of one. The balance of the property was bought by a man who married Marie Ellis Thayers oldest daughter June by the name of Urey and they are living in the Case Homestead
Oct 21 1946. Sarah has been crippled up all summer can hardly get around to do her work her feet brother all the time
wish Mother and I could have our home with one of the boys to look after us
we wont freeze or starve but we get enough to eat by paying the Democratic prices. We pay 1.00 a pound for butter
hamburger steak 40 cents Beef steak 1.25 and for Bacon we have forgot what it looks like
Oct 21 1946. While these excerpts aim to give an overview of the content they barely scratch the surface. Myron goes into depth about everything he discusses - his familys personal and career changes his life at home with Sarah Hartstowns many citizens and their life events his views on the government and the war effort and his fears for the future. Some of the many themes of these letters are the challenges of aging in a time of inconsistent communication and transportation rural Pennsylvania daily life the impact of wartime policy on rural Pennsylvania and the many tragedies of loss in old age friends family and ones former self and many more. These letters are an absolute treasure trove of rural Pennsylvania and Crawford County history and would make a tremendous addition to the collection of anyone interested in aging and survival in the mid 20th century. This archive contains a total of 32 letters: 1942 11 letters 1943 10 letters 1944 1 letter 1945 1 letter 1946 8 letters and 1947 1 letter. The letters are all written in dark pencil with a legible hand. Some of the letters are hole punched and bound with string some are unbound. All are in overall Good condition with only minimal signs of age and wear. Overall Good. BIO NOTES ON MYRON AND MILO MILLER: Myron trained under Joe Ellis and became a self-employed harness maker. He was a respected member of the Hartstown community living his entire life there. In 1897 Myron became postmaster of Hartstown and served for 38 years. He also acted as the local school director member of town council tax collector and town clerk. Myron married Sarah Mitchell 1861-1949 in 1882. They had three children Rollin Samuel and James. The younger two boys lived to adulthood and had children of their own. Myron was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. In his retired years when he was writing to Milo it was clear that Myron kept close track of their careers and lives and remained politically and socially engaged. Milo worked as an education professional and his hobby was genealogy. He spent his career in education after graduating from Allegheny College. He worked as a principal and head of schools in Girard and Knoxville. In 1894 Milo married Maude Moriarty 1870-1942. They had two children Florence Imogen Miller later Willison and Ellis Miller. Milo devoted many years of his life to his genealogical research. He wrote a book on the Ellis family tracing his mothers lineage in Hartston Pennsylvania. The book History and Genealogy of the John Ellis Family 1797 - 1935 was published in 1936 in Pittsburgh for private distribution. It can be accessed online as of 2025. Milo retired in 1933. 1925 Work Journal of a Massachusetts Railroad Laborer During the Heyday of Railroad Construction
Worcester Massachusetts: Central Massachusetts Railroad. Good. 1925. Hardcover. On offer is a detailed worked record of a man who worked on the railroad in central Massachusetts in the 1920's. The diary belonged to N. E. Drury. He lived in Worcester MA. Our informal research did not turn up any additional biographical information on him. From context he does not appear to be married as there is no reference to spouse or children. He works for an unidentified railroad most likely the Central Massachusetts Railroad. Much of the time he served as a relief worker filling in for other men. The Central Massachusetts Railroad was formed out of the failed Massachusetts Central Railroad Company in 1883. This was the heyday of railroad construction. The 1890s and the early 1900s saw it change hands merge and be re-merges a number of times. In 1907 it became part of Charles Mellon's virtual monopoly of railroad traffic in southern New England. In one form or another the railroad lasted until the 1990's when its owners ceased all operations. Drury's diary entries consist primarily of notations about when he went to work the job he did who he replaced and the amount he earned. There are very few entries of a personal nature. The following will give a sense of the diary entries: "Fair Went work 6: 15 AM Relief job Engineer Hobart Done 2: 15 PM 1 day" Feb 22; "Fair Went work 6: 15 am Relief for Engr Barrett Done at 2: 10 PM 1 day 5.72" Apr 7; "Went work 4: 00 AM Transfer Engr Broad Eng 629 Done 2: 00 PM 1 day 5.72" May 3; "Fair Left Portland at 5: 45 am Eng 1464 Done at Worcester 12: 45 am 150 miles J. J. Conlon 10.50" June 4; "Fair Went work 11: 45 am Eng 2420 fireman Fletcher 1 day 1 hour 50 min done 9: 35 pm $9.74" Sept 28. For a railroad historian this diary gives a fine glimpse into the operations of this railroad from the perspective of one of the thousands of men who laboured on it. It also serves to cross-refences other men who worked that railroad and various pieces of rolling stock. Measuring 5 inches by 3 inches this 1925 diary contains 183 pages and is approximately 80% complete. The cloth-covered hardboard cover shows staining but is in otherwise good condition. The binding is intact as are the pages. 'Djimri' according to the writings of Osman Ferid Saglam, the word 'Cimri' is used as a synonym for 'ephony-sultan'. Yazicioglu Ali, in his book entitled 'Tevârih-i Âl-i Selçuk' (No: 1390, Revan Library, the Topkapi Palace) argues that Cimri was not a name attributed to a vagabond who had claimed that he was Siyavus bin Izzeddin, but a derisive adjective used for him by pro-Seljuk historians. The actual meaning of the word is 'ordinary', or 'III-bred', or 'one who has sprung up from anywhere'.
