1809 - 1833 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF THE NOTED BRITISH ARMY 94TH REGIMENT OF FOOT - REGIMENTAL ORDERS OFFICER COMMUNICATIONS MEMORIALS STATUS REPORTS CORRESPONDENCE OF IMPORTANCE
SCOTLAND IRELAND ENGLAND DUBLIN EDINBURGH UK. Good. 1809. On offer is a remarkable original 1809 - 1833 handwritten manuscript book once used by the British Army's 94th Regiment of Foot. This book contains all manner of writings relevant to the running and goings-on of the Regiment by the Officers. The book is rather eclectic containing standing orders regimental orders different charts and forms for payroll and other reportage for example on the conditions of the Dublin Garrison orders of the day direct communications between officers public requests for leave advancement of funds settling of accounts etc. public apologies for poor behavior copies of letters sent to superiors up to and including the Duke of York Commander of all His Majesty's Forces and many other of Britain's peerage and there are even personal reminiscences notes of reference for departing soldiers plus much much more. Most of the entries of personal notes and those for Day Book purposes are signed by all manner of officers and peerage; Colonels Captains Lords and many reference specific orders by the Supreme Commander of the Army or even the King. Most fascinating are the 'Memorialist' messages of certain officers writing in the 3rd person touting themselves while seeking favor. 164 pp of history and methodology of this noted British Army regiment contained in this entirely handwritten book. Most of the entries are circa 1809 - 1827 but the oldest entry in the book is dated Edinburgh Castle 1833 and is addressed to what appears to be 'My Dear Beaver' while the correspondent signs in initials F.M. late of St. Lucia. He makes reference to Mr. Beaver as the clergyman that baptized his 3 children. Also of note: on the very last page written upside down are a quote a note and an invitation dated Fort Charlotte 1825 to His Excellency Major General Blackwell by Mr. and Mrs. Murray. Many clues for the astute researcher will assuredly unveil many of the writers in this fascinating piece of British militaria. Save for the front cover being nearly detached and some loosened endpapers this book would be G. One wormhole at head of volume 1 another at head of volume 2. Corners slightly bumped. One signature protruding in volume 2. A yellow stain on the half-title title and frontispiece centrally placed. The 4 preliminary leaves of volume I have a fold. Trained as a surgeon and passionate about travel Mungo Park volunteered with the African Society of London to find the sources of the Niger one of Africa's principal geographical enigmas. He would thus become the first Westerner to explore the Niger River. At that time only what Pliny and Leo Africanus had written about this region was known. Mungo Park departed in 1795 for Gambia ascending the river to the trading post of Pisania learning the local dialect. He crossed the Senegal riverbed visited Moullé Bondou Kaarta. Arrested by the Moors he was imprisoned for four months then managed to escape through the desert subsequently ascending the river for about a hundred kilometers. Very Good. quarto three page letter inscribed on a four page bi-folium formerly folded with splits along several folds remains of sealing wax Canton Michigan postal stamp else in good clean legible condition. An interesting letter with exceptional content on the election of 1840 and on the origin and significance of Harrison's Log Cabin and Hard Cider emblem: "I am pleased to hear of the zeal among the Whigs of V.T. I have great hopes of a favorable result. Your objection to the use we are making of the Log Cabin & Hard Cider emblem surprises me. I glory in it & deem that we are making just use of what was intended to sneer & ridicule us & our candidate. And besides it is a beautiful emblem of the purity & simplicity that should again prevail at the seat of Govt. where corruption riots in the treasury that are created by the tenants of Log Cabins. You must recollect that we are indebted to the Van Buren press for the watchword of L. Cabin & Cider. They said after the nomination in allusion to Harrison's imbecility & vanity that give him a pension of $ 2000 plenty of cider & a Log Cabin to live in & he would be contented - & again that the old ladies of Washington were making up a present of old clothes for him and requested contributions of old cloths shoes &c to send to the poor old General - such things were enough to arouse the feeling of every Whig & it has done so as well as many Democrats & when a whole nation are animated by the same feeling it must not be deemed "childish absurd ridiculous silly or immoral." And again the Whigs never wished to discuss or bring before the people his military life. It was forded upon them by wholesale charges of cowardice against Harrison" <br /> books

He taught at the University of Chicago from 1929 to 1945 when he became the Murray Professor English at Princeton University. He made pencilled marginal notes throughout this publication each entry marked with either "OK" or crossed out. Although Bentley's name is not in this it was acquired along with other works on allusions to Shakespeare in which he had written his name and made identical marginal notes. Very scarce.
