1886 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A YOUNG NEW JERSEY WOMAN WHOSE LIFE BOTH AT WORK AND HOME MAKE FOR A 19TH CENTURY SOAP OPERA
KEYPORT WHALE CREEK NEW JERSEY NJ. Good. 1886. On offer is a very interesting and intriguing 1886 manuscript diary dated July 11th 1886 through to December 25th 1886 handwritten by a young woman named Sherburne M. Graham of we believe New Jersey. Her passing references to Whale Creek Keyport the boat Wm. E. Bishop assuredly pinpoint New Jersey as her locale. Historians and collectors of the place and times will find this diary unique inasmuch that Miss Graham brings a soap opera quality to her writings describing the politics back stabbing inter personal relations and gossip that occurs at work in a retail store. Upon her return from a vacation she writes that she is worried that while away from the store 'some serious mistake discovered during my absence and for which I would get a laying out.' She then admits to poor work ethic prior to her vacation as she was disconsolate she was refused a raise. The back drop of her family: a preacher father and an ill mother and her other close personal relationships add to the narrative. In one example her father calls in an allopathic doctor for her mother. After some time the Doctor performs an "operation" on her mother who had a side abscess. The doctor had been treating her to no avail and after several days gave her some ether and lanced her side after the gruesome description he said he thought he had accidentally cut the intestines. This classical American pianist was a student of Harold Bauer and himself a respected teacher; his wife was concert singer Elizabeth Poole-Jones. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. ca. 1935. Near fine. Handsome matte finish half-length portrait of a young Sheridan in pin-striped three-piece suit seated with legs crossed one hand clutching a cigarette and the other presumably a music score. In a dark area at lower right Sheridan signs and inscribes boldly in white ink: "For / Richard Copley / In Sincere / appreciation / Frank Sheridan." Great contrast. Copley 1876-1939 Sheridan's manager a well-known New York concert manager. A superb brooding portrait by Arnold Genthe 1869-1942 renowned photographer with his imprint at lower left. unknown

1892. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter dated Washington D.C. 21 Feb. 1892 from Senator John Sherman in reply to an inquiry from J. M. Dickinson Esq. New Lisbon Ohio about whether his son could get a position at the "Public Printer." John Sherman 1823-1900 represented Ohio in the U. S. Senate from 1861 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1897. From 1877 to 1881 he was Secretary of the Treasury and in 1897 and 1898 he was Secretary of State. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is named after him. General William Tecumseh Sherman was his brother. Using official Senate Chamber stationery and envelope the Senator tells Dickinson that there were not openings at the time but that he would inquire again later. J. M. John M. Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co. Ohio in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon Ohio through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from Columbiana Co. 1882-1885; and was a justice of the peace in Lisbon in 1907. In 1880 the House of Representatives received a petition from J. M. Dickinson mayor of New Lisbon the name was officially changed from New Lisbon to Lisbon in 1895 and others citizens of Columbiana Co. Ohio for a constitutional amendment granting the right of suffrage to women. Along one edge of the postmarked envelope presumably in Dickinson's hand: "John Sherman Feby 22 1892." In Near Fine Condition: letter has 2 horizontal folds and is clean and solid; envelope is slightly soiled. unknown

Octavo original wrappers. Author's card tipped in "With the Compliments of the Author 15 William Street New York City." In near fine condition with a few small losses to the extremities of the wrappers. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s son P. T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York specializing in labor and insurance and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch before he died. Until now this book was held at the family estate in Washington County Pennsylvania. William Tecumseh Sherman served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. In 1864 Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the Western Theater. He led the capture of the strategic city of Atlanta a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas Georgia and Florida in April 1865 and succeeded Ulysses S. Kate Brownlee Sherwood 1841-1914 was a poet and journalist as well as the editor from 1883 of the Woman's Dept. of The National Tribune a monthly publication for Civil War veterans and their families. She also helped to organize the Woman's Relief Corps to aid the Grand Army of the Republic the same year was the first president of the Ohio Newspaper Women's Association in 1902 and supported women's suffrage. J. M. John M. Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co. Ohio in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon Ohio through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from Columbiana Co. 1882-1885; and was a justice of the peace in Lisbon in 1907. With esteem Jerry."  The recipient Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020 and was responsible for some of the most eventful legal decisions of the past half-century. Nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993 to replace retiring justice Byron White Ginsburg became the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court after Sandra Day O’Connor. Ginsburg spent much of her legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights winning many arguments before the Supreme Court. During her tenure as associate justice of the Supreme Court Ginsburg received attention for her fiery and passionate dissents that reflected liberal views of the law. She was popularly dubbed “the Notorious R.B.G.†a moniker she later embraced. She authored several important majority opinions related to gender discrimination voting rights and affirmative action in cases such as United States v. Virginia 1996 which struck down the Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy as violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment Olmstead v. L.C. 1999 in which the Court ruled that mental illness is a form of disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Friends of the Earth Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services Inc. 2000 in which the Court held that residents have standing to seek fines for an industrial polluter that affected their interests and that is able to continue doing so. Shestack 1932–2011 was an American attorney diplomat and prominent leader within the legal profession known for his work in complex commercial litigation and appellate advocacy. Over the course of his career he became a respected figure in both domestic legal practice and international human rights diplomacy serving as United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in the late twentieth century. Shestack also held significant leadership roles within the American legal community including serving as President of the American Bar Association where he promoted the rule of law legal ethics and international cooperation among legal institutions. Letter Signed to John Stoddard Boston May 5th 1748
handwritten. Very Good. folio 1 ¼ pages moderate wear creased along folds split along one fold now professionally repaired else very good. Written in secretarial hand with the following close of the letter in Shirley's autograph "I am with esteem Sir your most assured Friend and Humble Servant W. Shirley." The letter discusses attempts to raise troops from Connecticut and elsewhere including the use of impressments to guard the frontiers terms of enlistment and pay as well as other military matters during the waning days of the War with France. In addition there is some discussion of sending delegates among the Six Nations: "The sending out Parties of English Men with the Indians of the Six Nations I strongly recommended to the Court & repeated my instances of the absolute necessity of our maintaining our interest in them in that way.
