‎1929 Original Draft of a Genealogy Book on the Ellis Family of Mayfield Maine and Hartstown Pennsylvania Which Would be Published in 1936‎

‎Mayfield Maine Hartstown Pennsylvania. Fair with no dust jacket. 1929. Softcover. On offer is a detailed draft of a book tracing the roots of the Ellis Family who resided in Mayfield Maine and Hartstown Pennsylvania. The draft was written by a son of Silence Ford Ellis of the Pennsylvania Ellis lineage. The author of this manuscript is Milo H. Miller 1863-1951. Miller was the author of two books each thoroughly researched genealogical treasures focused on the history of his family. He published A History and Genealogy of the Miller Family 1725-1933 tracing his father’s roots in 1933 and A History and Genealogy of the John Ellis Family 1797-1935 tracing his mother’s roots in 1936. This 1929 manuscript is an early draft of the latter. To learn more about Milo Miller SEE BIO NOTES following this listing. The draft manuscript is largely handwritten in Miller’s tidy hand. He has divided the book into chapters based on the specific branch of the Ellis family he is following and included a section with images and relevant maps. He has written the title page Table of Contents and Preface in pencil. As well as a Preface about the importance of preserving family history and his “labor of love” and citing his reason for being the one to take on the task: “The need of preserving the records during the lifetime of many of the older members of the family seemed imperative; and this seemed like an opportune time to compile such valuable genealogical data for upon such records is based much of the knowledge…sought by historical and genealogical societies”. The preface is extremely similar to the one Miller would ultimately publish in 1936. The following pages contain Miller’s typed pages intended for the book which he has glued into the larger pages of the draft as well as pencil-drawn family trees glued in newspaper articles relating to the people and places he is writing about and a hand drawn map of Mayfield Township featuring John Ellis’ farm. To give a sense of the content of the manuscript some of the titles of the pages in the draft follow: Explanation of the Map of John Ellis Farm Historical Sketch related to John Ellis and the farm Military Service of Benjamin an Enoch Ellis Sketch of Abner Ellis Military Service of Nathan F. Ellis The Death of John Ellis and Philander Coburn Ellis. There is a typed transcription of two Civil war letters between members of the Ellis family in 1863 and further pages discussing the Ellis family in the Civil War. Sadly Miller has cut rectangles out of some of the pages in order to extract photographs he had glued in. It appears he removed the photos in order to create photo pages for the book. The original photos and the cardboard on which they are pasted are included in this collection and the photos can also be seen in his 1936 book. Unfortunately cutting out the photos has impacted several of the family trees Miller drew with big chunks missing from the middle. It also appears Miller removed other content likely for use in the final book. Regardless of any imperfections of this draft manuscript it contains terrific insight into how a genealogist made connections and put his research into a condensed and readable format. It also provides awesome insight into familial connections in Pennsylvania and Maine. This would be a terrific addition to a collection or research arsenal of anyone interested in genealogy Pennsylvania Maine or the evolution of familial lineage. BIO NOTES ON MILO H. MILLER: Milo H. Miller was born to his brother to parents Samuel K. Miller 1822-1896 and Silence Ford Ellis 1828-1899 just outside of Hartstown PA. Milo and his brother Myron Manson Miller 1859-1949 were raised in Hartstown. Milo attended the Edinboro Normal School and Allegheny College. He worked as an education professional following graduation and his hobby was genealogy. He worked as a principal and head of schools in Girard and Knoxville and a principal in McKeesport. In 1894 Milo married Maude Moriarty 1870-1942. They had two children Florence Imogen Miller later Willison and Ellis Miller. Milo devoted much time to genealogical research. Milo retired from education in 1933. A few months after Maude died in September of 1942 Milo travelled to California to stay with Ellis and his family and eventually made his own home in California. The manuscript draft contains approximately 45 pages of content. The collection also includes seven photo boards with original photos cut and glued on to carefully measured boards containing labeled photos of 39 members of the Ellis family organized by family tree. The manuscript is paper bound and intact save for Miller’s cutouts and a few pages of content that have come unglued from the larger manuscript. The artist is Stasys Eidrigevicius. Complete in a three-part custom portfolio plus slipcase. 12.25 x 9.75 inches. The left side of the portfolio with 9 poems in the original Polish bound in the center with 8 original etchings bound in and the right side with 9 poems in German translation. Also with colophon pages in Polish and German. The portfolio of beige linen or linen-like cloth immensely clean and with sharp corners. Each of the three panels of the portfolio screenprinted with a large facsimile of the signatures of the poet artist and translator respectively. As called for there are eight original etchings of copperplate and aquatint. The etchings pulled on ecru heavy-duty card stock apparently produced in Poland. On average each plate measures 5.75 x 4.75 inches. Most plates in gray-scale and a few with subtle tones of blue or brown added. Each of the etchings is signed in light pencil by the artist just below the impression. All pages including text and plates exceptionally clean. We can find no demerits. Lovely custom full-pictorial slipcase bound in gray cloth stamped in black and white. The featured silkscreen by the artist consists of the wrap-around design on the slipcase. Slipcase with just a trace of soiling/browning to the rear board. A Fine copy in a Near Fine slipcase. Rare in any condition. Czeslaw Milosz 1911-2004 was a Lithuanian-born "Polish poet prose writer translator and diplomat. His World War II-era sequence The World is a collection of twenty 'naïve' poems. Following the war he served as Polish cultural attaché in Paris and Washington D.C. then in 1951 defected to the West. His nonfiction book The Captive Mind 1953 became a classic of anti-Stalinism. From 1961 to 1998 he was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California Berkeley. In 1978 he was awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature and in 1980 the Nobel Prize in Literature." Stasys Eidrigevicius b.1949 is a painter and graphic artist. "Lithuanian-born Polish-based Stasys is an artist of popular taste who values expression over intellectual constructs. His art has a faux-naif humorous flavour in its reductionist qualities superimposing itself over the romantic notion of art as a metronome registering the 'vibrations of the soul'. ‎1909 ORIGINAL MODEST GROUP OF LETTERS AND MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A KENTUCKY MAN WORKING IN THE MINING TOWNS AND CAMPS OF THE NEVADA - CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINS‎

‎SWEETWATER NEVADA. Good. 1909. On offer is a very unique collection of diary and papers from store keeper in the American west at the turn of the last century. The collection consists of a small diary and a collection of ephemera. The diary measures 4 inches by 2.75 inches. It is leather bound. It contains 365 pages plus memoranda and is about 60% complete. The cover is in good condition and all of the pages are intact. The handwriting is legible. The ephemera consists of 3 letters a photograph/portrait newspaper clippings and receipts. Milton Diltz Holton a member of a noted Kentucky family was born in Mount Sterling Montgomery County KY in 1869. He came to Murray at the end of the 19th century was a second Mayor of Murray and a Master Commissioner of the Calloway county in the early 1900s. He studied law changed several jobs but since 1905 was mainly working in the insurance business. He was married and he refers to 3 children in his letters home. He passed away in 1948 at the age of 78. His wife Juliet lived her life in Murray KY. She was born in 1877 and passed away in 1960 at 82 years of age. Some time around the turn of the century Holton left his home and travelled to Dawson Springs KY. Later he became interested in a mining proposition in Sweetwater Nevada where it appears that he while looking after it worked in a General Store then he worked for a Travel Insurance Company near Chicago. His diary is dated 1909. The ephemera contains letters dated as early as 1904 Dawson Springs and 1908 and 1909 from Sweetwater. NV. These along with U.S. Postal Money Order receipts would suggest that he has been seeking work to support his family. The Sweetwater Range was the scene of a great deal of prospecting and mining. It was not as productive a region as nearby Brodie Aurora or Masonic regions the latter mentioned several times in the diary. ". not much business. Dave Leroy came down on his stage - which came down from D.O. Moodies camp and staid all night says he has a contract for 50 feet." Feb 8. ". Stage business is good. Not much in store." Mar 8 ". Groves over. Buck Top Conway and Gord's partner left for Brodie this A.M. Cohn left this morning. Davis said he was going to Yenington also Brodie and Mono Lake ." May 9. The work is hard and business is fairly slow. He recounts the comings and going of men working in fairly isolated communities in the Sweetwater mountain range. Both his diary and the money order receipts show that he continually sent money east to his wife. One of the 3 letters is a beautiful note from his wife: ". You mustn't forget Dily a little momma who is playing the best little mother she knows how to your children and remember she needs all the assistance i you can give her. You'll be a better happier man to know you are doing all in your power to help your own. With Love and best wishes . your wife Julie Ann." Letter dated Mar 28 1909. Also included is a black and white portrait of Holton taken in St Louis MO. At some point in time Holton returned home to his family. A fourth child was born. He resumed the life insurance business and over a long career became very successful in that industry. He is buried with his wife in Murray KY. This is an outstanding personal collection illustrating the struggles and efforts of a man to support his family at the turn of the 20th century. His diary provides a fascinating glimpse into the way of life in the small villages and camps of Nevada that are now long gone ghost towns. Hakubunkan 1924 19.50 x 11 cm broché Work published by the Japanese Ministry of Railways admirably illustrated with 130 double-page color illustrations by Hatsusaburo Yoshida: 2 decorating the pastedowns traditional Japanese animated scenes 26 views and 104 bird's-eye view landscape maps. Numerous black maps including a large one at the end of the Japanese railways which is detached. Pale green cloth covers. Smooth spine with title. Boards printed in black with a sample of Japanese fabric a cartouche for the title. Cardboard slipcase repeating the board motifs in black. Small lacks to slipcase rubbing and corners bumped. Fine condition of the collection with occasional light foxing. A paper lack to the pastedowns at the end of the volume. Some pages with fine manuscript notes in ink. Celebrated as the Hiroshige of the Taisho era Yoshida 1884-1955 was a painter and cartographer. His bird's-eye view maps and views are enhanced by multiple colors and changes of season and weather. This new edition was entirely revised and the illustration is completely new. The Ministry of Railways published this collection from 1923 to 1928; from 1923 to 1925 the collection contained numerous bird's-eye view maps by Yoshida which were replaced by photographs and now only adorn the pastedowns. This is the first collection to use photography with 126 black and white photographs and 18 hand-colored ones. 22 color prints by Hatsusaburo Yoshida. 7 folding color maps and several black and white maps in-text. Cloth binding and cardboard slipcase. Pale green cloth covers. Smooth spine with title. Boards printed with a Japanese temple with full moon and trees on the first board and on the second. Illustrated cardboard slipcase with Mount Fuji and birds. Rubbing and dulled edges to the slipcase. Small cut to the cloth on the spine. Fine condition of the collection with some foxing. Spine darkened boards spotted. Handsome copy rare with its original slipcase. A vast undertaking this guide was intended as a monument to the glory of Japan. For the first time modern Japan meets traditional Japan. Celebrated as the Hiroshige of the Taisho era Yoshida 1884-1955 was a painter and cartographer.
