Elegantly matted in Ivory rag board with gilt French line decoration. Sized to 14 x 18 inches. With dedication leaf 'Edith Cast Faber from her Mother a loving memento painted by Mrs. J.A. Faber about 1882-1890'. Classified as florilegia: ornamental flowers or here fruit painted for beauty rather than scientific or medicinal appeal this lovely still-life of persimmon was evidently painted from nature by an accomplished hand. Although the art of flower painting was a favored traditional pastime for genteel women of nineteenth century Britain few works boast the refined sense of composition color light and shading as evidenced by the practiced skillful execution of this still life. To date the works by Mrs. Faber are undocumented however this elegant composition clearly reflects her appreciation for and mature expression of the glories of the garden the natural world and the still life tradition. ‎1820 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT COOKBOOK OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY BRITISH COOKING AND CULINARY ARTS‎

‎ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN. Good. 1820. On offer is a super early 19th Century manuscript book of recipes an index on the back of the front board 67 pages or so hand numbered then some unnumbered. There are also some loose recipes tucked in. We note with fascination that this book was likely started at the beginning of a marriage for a newlywed couple as the back board is inscribed: "Mr and Mrs Jackson were married on the 22nd of June 1819. Mr J. aged 24 and Mrs J. 22. Mrs J. was born Feb 20 1797." We speculate that this book was started soon after the commencement of their married life. Many unique recipes including: Risalles likely Rissoles Brageniza wine Parte for Stringing Tartlets Bleak house pudding Miss Huggetts' Plum cake and more - see the photo of the index. Remedies include: Oil of Amber Oil of Turpentine Spirits of Hartshorn Spirits of Wine Spirits of Campion Vinegar and eggs. Remedy for toothache: wet a piece of wool with creosote and put it into the tooth with a quill Cough Medicine: treacle vinegar and laudanum and sirup of squills and more. ‎1891 1892 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT OF THE TROUP FAMILY OF ROCKBEARE EXETER LIVING A LIFE OF PRIVILEGE AND ILLNESS‎

‎ROCKBEARE EXETER DEVON ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN UK. Good. 1891. On offer are two very intriguing English diaries for the years 1891 and 1892. There is little doubt that the author lives a life of privilege being a "well to do" family living in or actually on the outskirts of Exeter Devon England. Research suggests the family lives in the small village of Rockbeare in a manor that once belonged to Lord Canterbury. While the 1891 diary is written by a Mrs. Jane Troup formerly Jane Rose and identified through census records as she is otherwise unsigned. Written in the front of the diary by another hand it appears is "Thomas Potts James". An extremely active life she says Mr. Troup travels and lectures quite a bit and this is also extra work and staff as our author is also in a wheel chair of some sort part or much of the time and it also appears she had troubles with the birth of her son. She talks about the baby and the nurse going everywhere with her and when she goes down to the garden she's taken by one of the servants in her "bath chair". The first diary 1891 is full of handwritten entries save for 12 or so pages when she becomes sick and also plenty of entries in the back on the memoranda pages. The second diary 1892 is only about ½ full and it is written by someone else in the household. Her is some online census info regarding the author et al: "Rockbeare House John Rose TROUP born ca. 1850 in Bengal East Indies Profession/ occupation; "Own means" Frances B. TROUP born ca. 1860 in Philadelphia Pa John R. TROUP Jr. born ca. 1890 in Rockbeare Rose Andrews nurse Susanne CLAMPET cook LUCY MILLS housemaid Henry HIGGS butler Thomas YANDLE coachman. In the 1901 census Frances B TROUP is living with her mother Isabela JAMES born in the U. S. at Offwell House in Offwell Devon England. Elms the trouble maker is Henry ELMS a 50 year old farmer. Augustus R. PODMAN is Vicar of Rockbeare. Firhall was purchased by Captain Troup who married John Rose of Holmes daughter Jane. They had four sons all brought up at Firhall and all who entered the military service of the East India Company. Hugh retired as general; Colin became Brigadier-General; Robert had command of the 2nd Oude Local Infantry and Captain John Rose Troup married an Indian Lady of great wealth." Here are some snippets: 1891 "February 24th Went to the station in the morning for Mr. Troup at the 11 o'clock train. Told him of all the Elm's an old servant of theirs trouble and he decided to go out after lunch and dismiss him surtainly which he did with Yendle as witness forbidding him to come near our part. Mr. Turner quite decided and Elms found his match. We sent for a police man to see that Elms did not do any mischief but he went right into Exeter." "February 27th A beautiful day. I walked down into the gardens and found it very warm. Yendle and Higgs were both there. Higgs said it was the first time he had been in it for 12 months and Yendle the 1st time he had walked round it for 49 years; when Lord Canterbury lived here and he came as a lad. Drove with Frances Nurse and Baby to the station and to Mrs. Tollard's for clothes." "March 1st Mrs. Clanfelt went to church in the morning. Nurse Lucy and Yendle in the afternoon. Mr. Podmore preached all day about Elms wickedness to the great delight of the other servants." She just hired a new gardener named Mark Quick "March 20th A bright sunny morning and I went down to the garden with Mr. Troup. The new gardener has made a great change in the greenhouse. It is well arranged and delightfully clean so that I could set down in it with comfort and there are many flowers in bloom. It looks very bright and pretty." "May 11th A lovely day. Yendle went into Exeter to get champagne for me as the doctor says I must drink it. I walked outside the door when I at last got dressed and breathed the fresh air. Watched Zuck and Win doing the porch beds. Ceased the fires in my room I hope for the summer. I wore a thinner dress." "May 21st The man came out with the horse this morning and though the day seemed showery I thought I should get a drive this afternoon but at 3 o'clock it began to rain and though I sat in my bonnet for ½ an hour. I had at last to give up going out which I have tried to do every day for a week without success. I have almost given up expecting better weather. F and I went into the trunk room for an hour put away some things. Five in the evening in bedrooms and all day in dining room." "May 29th I had a letter from Mr. Cann that Elms summons me to the Castle of Exeter on Thursday the 11th to answer for breaking my contract……" "June 26th Another day with heavy rain in the morning but a bright afternoon. I went down to the garden in my bath chair. Anna Sparks sent baby a little musical chair. It is very pretty. We could not go to Exeter on account of the storm. Very heavy thunder showers yesterday in many parts of England doing great damage." "July 23rd Had a statement of my _________ income at the guard and a draft of 194.18 pounds. They only charged me a half percent and Waskin's charged me 5 percent for nearly receiving the charges of my Cambridge and Boston property. I am glad our quarrel separated us. He would have made a good thing out of me." "August 28th Another day of terrible showers. I felt good for nothing all day. Higgs went into Exeter to stay over night and Quick to buy a gun to go out with Mr. Troup at my expense. Had a fire in the outer hall made immediately after lunch and sat by it. Dr. Lower came to see Mr. Troup who is still much out of sorts. Higgs took me down in the garden just after breakfast and before the showers began." "September 3rd Today was rather fine but cold. Had three partridges cooked for dinner they were excellent. Mrs. Troup and I went to Conn Alherton's garden party. St. Leonard's lawn is a charming place. Had a pleasant drive in and out. Called at the Drymond's as we went in. They had just returned from the Lakes. Saw the Addington's at the party very few people from this side of Exeter and few clergymen. Had a fire in the drawing room." "September 29th Did not go to drive as Yendle had to go after the clothes. Higgs took me down to the garden in the bath chair. My birthday present from Mr. Troup came today a beautiful wolf skin rug to keep me warm in the carriage or chair." "October 7th Better this morning. Wrote to Ella but went to bed with laryngitis cough and was kept in my room most of the time in bed until October 19th when I came down to dinner." She doesn't write from Oct. 8th to the 19th while she's sick "October 20th They went with lady and nurse this morning as it was bright. I came downstairs into the old little dining room to which they moved last Saturday. It seems very pleasant to get down and have my bedroom cleaned. I am weak but fell much better. Dr. Somers had made me 8 visits and 6 or 7 bottles of medicine." "November 12th Had a good room at the Rougemont in Exeter last night. Had good seats play interesting. Coffee tea and cake served between the acts. We did not take any. I shall another time. Went shopping and then to the flower show. Cann took me in before it was open." "November 16th I did not go out but lay on the couch and visited for the journey home. Carriage came for us at 4. Nurse and some baggage went in the train and got here soon after we did. Smith brought her over in his trap. I should have felt better had it not been for this tomaloe' beef I ate Saturday which disturbed my bowls. Went to the garden in my chair." "November 17th Glad on the whole to get home. Annie had done no end of work while we were away. She is a treasure and waits on me most faithfully. Keeping me in bed mornings and bringing up my breakfast. She put away some of my things and got xmas presents for most of the servants." Curiously the 1892 diary is that fact that when she talks about her two children she calls one of them Alfred and one "Boy" or "dirty creature". 1892 "February 29th Amy went with papa and Constance in the afternoon to see the children's costume ball at Walter's. She was out with Constance and Richard in the morning. Mammie out with Alfred in the garden in the morning." "August 3rd For two days I have put Alfred to bed without rocking him. Today he rebelled but I gained the victory in the end. He slept very well at night but woke up 4:15 and did not sleep afterwards but he is very good today. We all went up to the woods this morning. Boy fell off the bed but did not bruise himself. I think he fell on the pillow and then rolled off." "August 13th Both boys well and happy. Alfred slept until 7:15. He is improving slowly I think. Boy likes playing with the postman's ____. He always calls him "dirty creature" because I said he was so at first." Many names are mentioned: "Capt. ‎1916 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF THE BROKENHEARTED WIDOW OF OHIO SUPREME COURT JUSTICE JOSEPH PERRY BRADBURY‎

‎Pomeroy Ohio OH. Fair. 1916. Cloth. On offer is the handwritten manuscript diary of Mrs. J.P. Bradbury Pomeroy Ohio 1916 and as found on genealogical sites Mrs. Bradbury 1853-1918 being Emma L. Woods the widow and second wife of Justice Joseph Perry Bradbury 1838-1915 of the Ohio Supreme Court. Research finds Justice Bradbury and his family in the 1880 census it said that he was then married to his first wife Sarah E. Bradbury who was an invalid and that two other people lived in the house Emma Woods as “sister” so it seems clear to be his first wife’s sister. It also lists Elizabeth Blackwell servant living at the home. The diary itself is written just a few months after the death of Joseph. Her grief as she puts it is too much to bear and almost everyday she writes about him and missing him. She calls him Petty for a nickname too. I thought it was Perry because of his middle name but on closer inspection it is Petty. She starts out her entries on January and writes on almost every available space for everyday see scan but then suddenly stops her entries on July 24th. Entries are extremely interesting probing what it is like for a newly widowed woman who seemed to be deeply in love with her husband as one will see in the following excerpts: “How am I to get along without my own dear Petty…. I am homesick for my dear Petty. I do not see how I am to go on this way. Petty dear if I could only have kept you how happy I would be as it is I am so depressed……Mr. Quincy came in to do some hauling of stuff left from the old house. Mrs. Barbara Wehe mother of Mrs. Frank Hudson of Chicago was brought here for burial Friday of last week. Mrs. Wehe used to live here in Pomeroy and was quite well-known. How I do miss my own dear Petty and when I think I could not do one thing to keep him it almost kills me. Dearest Petty…… The river is very high. Word came this morning that the steamer Kanawha had struck a part of dam no. 19 just below Parkersburg. In three minutes time the boat capsized. She lay upon her side. The number lost is estimated at from 12 to 25. Mrs. E.C. Atkinson of Racine and a lady whom I knew very well was lost. Her husband saved. I did not know any of the other people. It was a terrible calamity……. some days I think I will fly to pieces. I am so very nervous and oh how I do miss my dear dear Petty. I just think I must see his dear sweet face…… oh; my poor old heart aches all the time for him. How I loved him…… just six months since my dear Petty left me. Some days I think I can not stand it. I just must see him. No one knows how I miss my dear sweet Petty. How I did love him. He was so sweet and good to me…… Dorothy and Mary Etta went out for walk into see the doctor. The town is full of sick people. Doctors are just rushed to death…… just one year ago today my dear Petty fell and hurt his arm. This was the beginning of his going down. Oh how I miss him. It was the 14th of February but it was a Sunday. Oh how I miss Petty…. This was my dearest husband 78th birthday. Oh I have missed him……. one year ago today my Petty was in bed with a sprained arm and now he has gone from me. Oh how I do miss my dear sweet Petty who was so good to me……. I am still so blue and miss Perry so much today. I just feel as if I must see him. I do not see how I am to go on without him. Dear dear Petty and I miss Dorothy so much too…. I sincerely hope I may be taken to my heavenly home for I know I never could stand it. I hope my life will not be long. I do not want to live to be a real old woman and not a burden to anyone. If I could have gone with my Petty how much better it would have been perhaps. I get dreadfully blue some days….Bert Millen brought the deed for the farm for me to sign today. I wish Petty could have settled all up with Dale Roberts. I feel a little shaky about the settlement of that……. River still rising and there will be between 48 and 50 feet of water here. It will be in my cellar tonight. Took the gas heater out this morning from the furnace. The Creek is up around the Bradford House and water and Mrs. Geyers seller. Mr. A.L. Willock deputy sheriff died this afternoon and leaves a wife and daughter. A year ago this evening my own dear Petty and I walked down to Dr. Henlows Office. Coming home Petty wanted to be weighed so we went to Mr. Stockmore’s seed store and he weighed only 148 pounds. Oh how I did hate to see that. It made Petty feel badly…. Dearest husband how I have missed you this day. How I would love to see you. Oh Petty Petty how am I to go on without you. This has been a very gloomy day……. Republican convention is still on in Chicago. Hope Roosevelt will not get the nomination. I miss my Petty so much. He would always tell me about how the conventions were conducted. He usually went to them. Petty how I do miss you…. I went up to see Dr. Jane but she was out. So I whet down to see Mrs. Plantz. She is not very well. I talked to her about the lump in my breast. After I came home and went for Dr. Gribble. He made an examination and found a growth but advised me to see how it will be in a few weeks from now. It worries me very much. Now to think I have not my Petty to go to and talked it over. Oh dear Petty maybe it won't be very long until we will be together again…. Just one year ago this 17th day of July my dear Petty closed his eyes in death. I will never forget how sweet he looked that morning and how blue his eyes were some days I think I can not stand it I must see him and hear his sweet voice. Dear dear Petty perhaps it won't be long until I will be with my loved ones. I pray that my Father in heaven will only keep me from long-suffering with this dreadful thing that has come to me. ‎Indianpolis Indiana Marion County IN. Good. 1866. On offer is the super 1866 handwritten manuscript diary of Kate Wood French of Indianapolis Indiana in Marion County immediately following the Civil War and in the thick of the Reconstruction Era. Kate is ideally placed to comment on the times as she is married to her adored husband Charlie a successful executive in an oil and mining firm and mother to their daughter "May" who was the love of her life. She married Charlie on May 28 1863 and their daughter was born on May 30 1865. Charlie was the Vice President of "International National Petroleum Mining Company" and they seemed to be quite well off financially. Here are snippets: " . We have entered upon another year. This year we have a dear little Babe to brighten our days. I a mother and Charlie a father Sweet names they are indeed to us . This evening after supper I went up home to sit awhile with pa. He is very sick tonight. We feel almost afraid to hope . Sad day for us all. This morning at 6 oclock dear Father breathed his last. The patient sufferer has gone to dwell evermore with his Saviour. Lent for us 2 oclock this morning. Pa's mind was clear to the very last. He spoke to and knew us all. His suffering was intense but he is now at rest will know no more pain or suffering but will live where all is happiness through eternity . How lonely we have all felt today and particularly poor mother but Charlie and I took the baby and spent the afternoon with mother as all of the friends have left. Can it be we will never hear his kind voice anymore nor see his pleasant smile. Ah! It is true . Charlie and I went to church this morning it did not seem possible that I should go to church and not see my kind Father on the steps to meet us as he always was but he was not there. We can not see his kind face there any more. Oh can it be true Dear Savior in pity look upon us . A lovely day but so very muddy that it is almost out of the question for ladies to go out . Mother and the boys spent afternoon and staid for supper we always talk of dear Father who has gone never to return. I cannot yet realize that Pa will not come here anymore . We should always make it a rule to get up early Monday morning for that is "washday" and an early start to work ought always to be had . A lovely day. This afternoon I got ready and commenced to walk down street but as luck would have it the kindest husband coming for me we took a delightful ride we did not get back till five . So cold and windy that the men have not been down street but have had a pleasant day reading and talking in the parlor. In the afternoon they walked over to the Arsenal this evening Bryon has been telling us of his imprisonment in "Andersonville Prison" . I got up early and went shopping wih mother. We did not get back till 3 oclock then I found Charlie waiting to take May and I riding. We went and had a nice ride all enjoyed it. Charlie has had workmen out fixing the pipes to the bathroom . My girl ironed the clothes today and then went up to mothers for some milk. Dr Thompson was here again this afternoon to vaccinate May as the first did not take. Charlie is delighted - is offered $350.00 for Fancy. After supper took a nice ride . Well today we have had our little pet Christened - May Wood French. It is a sweet name. There were three others besides ours. May acted so like a little lady that we were all delighted with her . This evening after supper we took a delightful ride in our little "Central Park Carriage" and so Baby "May" rode in it for the first time . After dinner we dressed May up so sweet and called at Mrs Smiths and Halb. Everyone who sees little Baby May on the street admires her a great deal . This afternoon the man put down our carpet a beautiful "tapestry brussels" in our bedroom. It is so pretty. Now we are going to have the furniture varnished and then it will be nice . We got up pretty early this morning as we had a considerable to do before we could start. I finished packing our trunk and Charlie went for a carriage. We started at 12 oclock we got into Lafayette at 4 pm. Stopped at Lahr House.We have all had enough of Delphi already so I think or rather hope we shall start back tomorrow - I went up to see Aunt Delia this afternoon. The rememberance of Dear Pa filled her mind and was too much for words he having been there so lately . Our darling little girl is one year old today and yet it seems but a few weeks since she was brought into existance. I did intend going down street and getting her a birthday present but Charlie brought her a beautiful doll as large almost as herself . Charlie came home early telling me that next Monday he and Capt. Smith would start for "Canada Oil Wells" its too bad but then it can't be helped . This beats us for what should Charlie do but have a chill and he was feeling extremely well. I can not imagine what caused it . Charlie feeling better but thinks he will not eat much so as to starve the chills . Charlie went down street this morning and brought home "Morgan" the handsomest horse with the exception of "Beauty" I ever saw. Then after supper C May and I took a nice ride in little Pheaton the entire rig the attraction of all . Charlie received word today that "Oil is struck" hurray for us . Oh! How our hearts ached this morning. May was very sick we were up from 2 1/2 till day-light but now we are happier for she is better . Charlie came home early and I had May dressed so sweetly so while supper was getting ready we took May and rode down street. The "observed of observers" why Because Baby May held the reins of fiery Morgan just as if she drove him . In the evening Charlie and I went to the "Opera" we are not partial to operatic singing but we went more to see the new Hall and people . My new girl came early this morning and Melia whom I have had working for me a year next month left for her home on the noon train. She has been an excellent girl and I thought a great deal of her . I have felt in rather a strange mood today been wondering if anyone loves me or not. I believe precious little May does. I know I had a Father who has gone to that bright shore loved me. I know he did. I am sometimes afraid that I am not a very lovable person. Well I don't know what to do to make myself any other way . Somehow or other today has been dreary enough for me and then too I feel in sort of wretched state and wonder either taking into consideration the peculiar feelings I have. God to Thee I look for strength to bear my pains and sufferings ." ‎Coast to Coast By Train. Good. 1924. On offer is the meticulously kept original 1924 scrapbook and journal compiled by Mrs. Mary E. Piper who detailed a coast to coast journey organized by the Massachusetts State Chamber of Commerce. Over 54 pages in a large two-ring 11" x 9" binder Mary has made a lovely relic to early 20th Century cross country travel. Official itinerary postcards menus newspaper clippings stickers luggage labels magazine pictures and original photographs all add a depth to the handwritten narrative. This trip was a massive effort by the Chamber of Commerce and its importance was reflected in the guest list of the itinerary stating any number of important Massachusetts business and cultural leaders. Mrs. Piper proves to be a delightful travel companion and diarist who easily notes: "Another wonderful day to think about all my life." And then another one of many quotable entries made us laugh: "The Blackfoot Indians staged a show for us and also made our leader Mr. Blake a Blackfoot Indian called him Bald Headed Eagle put the signs on his face with what appeared to be mud." ‎1925 1936 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARIES OF A WEALTHY AMERICAN OILMAN'S WIFE AT CRITICAL JUNCTURES IN CHINA'S HISTORY‎

‎Changsha China. Good. 1925. On offer is a very interesting pair 2 of manuscript diaries handwritten by Mildred Ruth Mills wife of Edmund. Our writer appears to be a wealthy American woman in Changsha China in 1925 and then a decade later is 1936. Historians and collectors of Chinese political and historical ephemera will recognize that Mrs. Mills was well suited to observe the birth pangs of the Nationalist movement. In fact she is in China at a tinder box time with Sun-Yat-Sen dying in Peking in March of 1925 and the ascendance of Chiang Kai-shek as his successor. She travels to other locations in eastern China throughout the year and there is an entry later in the year stating that they re-locate to Wuhu China. While half of January is used for recording which letters were "received" and "sent" there are over 325 entries for the rest of the year. Here are some snippets: "had chinese lesson today as usual". 3/6-"met the chinese interpreter and agent they were very nice." 5/3 "we put up a lunch and went to yola sou. Took boy with us had chair coolies. Went way up to top where we could see all of Changsha and vicinity. Was a wonderful view. Went in several temples". At some point her husband an employee of Standard Oil Co. of NY has to travel "up country" for a couple of weeks and she is making local/social trips by boat: "went to Island at four Mrs. Corbett has birthday party for Mollie.5/17 "Raining very hard today. Came over in boat with B.A. Men. Looks like a bad day for my tea." "weather was terrible and river bad". A few days later on 5/26 "River was bad last night. Could not cross so stayed all night with Peggy". Also references to "Mei Foo" which may be a bus in China. 6/1 "We are planning to go to Hankou on Mei Foo not sure yet." Many entries regarding political unrest: 6/1 "Today chinese have big parade against Japan and foreigners" on 6/5 "came back and had our dinner on the British gun boat 'Crickett'….city under strict law". On 6/7 "Things worse in the city" and on 6/12 she writes; "Foreigners killed in Hankou. Mr. Hobart was here expects things will be worse". On the lighter side back on 2/18 is a popular movie reference-"Sorry E. her husband Ed missed the picture last night 'Hunchback of Notre Dame'. I've seen it but wanted him to see it also". A subject that shows up in many entries is relations with the "help".2/9-."cook has asked for a raise to $18.00 we gave him $16.00 for now." 5/8 "had an argument with boy today so he left. Am without a boy now and Awah is still sick". 5/19 "Came home and found servants all gone have to fine them dollar each". 8/19 "one of the servants evidently stole Miss Norelico's money. Had exciting time the sisters had police in but could not find who took it". Again more boat traveling; "went to SOCONY place to wait for boat". 8/21 "Arrived Hankow about two o'clock . Capt Hoey met Mrs. Dressel. Came to Mr. Nichols house. Mrs. N is still away". 10/30 she writes "received telegram today saying we are transferred to Wuhu as soon as we are able to travel". 11/25 "Reached Hankow this morning went to office first with Ed waited in Mr. Porterfield's office. Went to Mrs. Bakes with her porter". New Year's Eve: "Finally decided not to go as chinese to costume party. Dressed up as small girl." There is also a receipt from a confectioners store with a Tientsin printed but "Changsha" written in the blank 4//11/25 I checked the date and author must have picked up some sweets to take on the way to "Mrs. Hobart's 'skiaki' party"$3.40 worth. The cover of the 1925 5&1/2" x 7&1/4" diary is quite worn there is splitting at front/back endpapers exposing weave but both boards holding well and overall G. ‎New Hampshire. Good. 1873. On offer is the original handwritten bittersweet diary of a new bride Mrs. Orie A. Pease who was married on August 15th 1872. Mrs. Pease b. April 13th writes about her days whether they are days of sweet cozy love with her sweet husband b. April 12th or days of illness for herself loved ones or neighbors. Most days whether cold or windy she keeps up cheerily about her happy times on Sundays when they can be together alone enjoying a quiet evening eating popcorn balls and molasses candy. The year for the most part wears on well though the chores never end and there are many illnesses and deaths: Arlie Bigger falls through the ice and drowns then Orie is pall bearer for Mrs. Norton just to name two. But then late in the fall matters turn even more tragic: On Saturday November 1 she learns that her sister-in-law Sadie is dying. Sadie dies shortly afterward and left her newborn baby to our young bride. She writes about the sadness of seeing the dead face of dear Sadie. Other snippets include: going to St. Elmo reading room seeing the Swiss Bell Ringers Brother Fred who we had not seen for 6 years came home. We also discover that Orie has a shop there is a Cooley's store the Congregational Festival is June 13 1873 the new Presbyterian Church inauguration was on May 18th 1873 Jake Walters buried their child 12.23 etc. etc. While the location is not specifically noted research suggests this couple lived in New Hampshire and she references Brooks Creston the French colony Kalen's and McGage's. Mrs Pease also writes of Sally Werners Miss Mcnair Miss Baker Ida Graham Mrs. King Mrs. Davenport Cooper Miss Herron Mrs. Shaw Mrs. Rolland Dr. Rawson Charly Gould "passed us but we did not speak" Mrs. Chapin Mr. Cooley Mrs. Bergan Mrs. Sherman and Rev. On offer is an original letter written in English dated Haut Upper Congo Nov 14th 1906 by an unknown female writer who appears to be the wife of a missionary who was being prosecuted by the Congo Police casual research suggest this is possibly the British Reverend Edgar Stannard. The letter specifically refers to implication in the "Commandant Hagström affair." The tremendous political controversy surrounded a charge of libelling Congo police officer Hagström made by the Governor General of the Congo Free State and King Leopold against the Reverend who accused Hagström of practicing brutality and cannibalism. ‎NAPA VALLEY CALIFORNIA CA ST. HELENA. Good. 1900. On offer is a super manuscript diary by renowned California painter Lucy E. Wiester as evidenced by the holograph entry "Mrs. W. H. Wiester 1900-1901" and then her address in San Francisco also in her hand there are archival notes in pencil in a later hand reading: 'St. Helena Diary' where she resided in Napa Valley California. It appears our writer used an older 1897 diary which has about 9 days entries for 1897 by the previous owner almost certainly a family member as similar people are mentioned but then Lucy picks up the book and writes for the most daily entries from January 1st through May 16th 1900 then somewhat more sporadically to April 1901. We learn that Lucy is a married busy thriving artist and active member of the community in Napa Valley. Research finds she was born in 1843 Illinois. The diary relates many instances of wild-flowering hearing concerts like the Knickerbocker Quartet and the Neopolitain mandolin California Club meetings artist trips and much much more. She does a great job mentioning the names of her visitors contacts and intimates. This is a very interesting bit of California Americana of an early 20th century artist. ‎GUELPH ONTARIO SOUTH WESTERN ONTARIO CANADA. Fair. 1907. On offer is a charming somewhat sad and enigmatic original manuscript diary handwritten by a young south western Ontario Canada woman named M. S. Walker b. August 10th 1879 of Guelph Ontario which in July 1907 the month and year of the diary was a small but fast growing community of under 15000 persons. The flip style book begins with a loose page and we note two entries that bring the humanity of the book to light: "Ian Walker Born March 25th 1907 Died March 25th 1907" and then in another hand: "To Mable from Mother May the G…. and Rec…. unite someday in singing the new new song". Then the diary begins in what one would assume was Mable's hand a later entry refers to "Mable and I" leading us to conclude either Mable gave her sister the book after the death or perhaps both sisters wrote with her numbered page 1 dated June 22 '07. However above this is an entry dated March 25 1907: Our baby came today and went to heaven the same day. 3/26/07 I took the little fellow's body out to Forest Lawn Cemetery to God's Acres His name was to have been Ian so we buried him by that name. 'Tis a little blossom in heaven." We feel that the book was likely a gift taken up quickly to record the sad event and then picked up and begun in earnest 3 months later. The book begins and appears to show her recovered from her tragedy: "Left Detroit with Aunt H. on 2-35 G.T.R. for Guelph. Arrived about 10 p.m. and found all well. It is good to be able to be at home with father and mother again and I am thankful to God that mother and father have been spared & that I am able to see them well and happy in their home again. I pray that they may be spared to us many years and that their latter years be bright and happy." What follows are 115 pages through to her last entry October 29th 1920 and besides the regular day to day recording there are more births more deaths trips and work at a busy bank in a bustling community with a far ranging family business in the background making for a super look at an early 20th Century Ontario woman's life. ‎Very Good French Original business card. Slightly stained. 5x8,5 cm. In Arabic and French. On card, engraved his tughra (dated 1331 Hegira), and the sign of Lahej sultanate. No photo. Lahej was a Sheikdom based in Lahej in Southern Arabia. The Sultanate became self-ruled in 1728 and gained independence in 1740. In 1839, the Sultanate became the Protectorate of Aden of the British Empire, though nominally the 'Abdali Sultan retained his status. The the Protectorate of Aden was briefly ruled again by the Ottomans during World War I, but regained by the British and absorbed into Federation of South Arabia in 1963. The 'Abdali dynasty was officialy abolished in 1967, through the proclamation by South Yemen. Hegira: 1331 = Gregorian: 1915.‎

In very good to near fine condition. Rare and desirable particularly containing the rare first appearance of Muir's landmark work "Features of the Proposed Yosemite National Park". Also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks" influential Scottish-American naturalist and environmentalist John Muir's letters essays and books describing his adventures in nature especially in the Sierra Nevada have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park and his example has served as an inspiration for the preservation of many other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club which he co-founded is a prominent American conservation organization. In his later life Muir devoted most of his time to the preservation of the Western forests. As part of the campaign to make Yosemite a national park Muir published two landmark articles on wilderness preservation in The Century Magazine "The Treasures of the Yosemite" and "Features of the Proposed Yosemite National Park"; this helped support the push for U.S. Congress to pass a bill in 1890 establishing Yosemite National Park. The spiritual quality and enthusiasm toward nature expressed in his writings has inspired readers including presidents and congressmen to take action to help preserve large nature areas. Illustrated with several plates from photographs including frontispiece with tissue-guard. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with a small chip to the front panel. Travels in Alaska by John Muir reflects Muir's exuberance for life and almost everything he encountered in his many travels. In addition to being an ecologist and traveler John Muir was a botanist and geologist a fact which readers will be reminded of through his contemplations of the southeast Africa flora and the activity of glaciers. Travels in Alaska is John Muir's journal of his 1879 1880 and 1890 trips to southeast Alaska's glaciers rivers and temperate rain forests. For Muir the wilderness was a medicine or spiritual tonic.
