‎This American sailor who served during World War Two lays claim to fame as being one of very few living persons ever pictured on a U.S. stamp -- his smiling visage appears among a group of swabbies pictured on the U.S. three-cent stamp issued in 1945 titled "U.S. Navy" Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. Fine. NOT a First Day Cover but simply an envelope bearing a mint copy of this stamp neither addressed nor mailed. Across the center large and bold Mullen signs in black medium-point marker. Original transmittal envelope cancelled in Des Moines Iowa on 13 February 1976 also present -- as is a small article from a philatelic newspaper undated but circa 1976 picturing this stamp and a "To the Editor" letter from three of Mullen's grandchildren pointing out that the Iwo Jima flagraisers were not the only living persons pictured on a U.S. stamp. Mullen appears at the upper right corner of the group of sailors captured on this stamp his cap cocked jauntily. Highly unusual -- a fun little piece of philatelic history. unknown‎

On offer is a rare and tightly focused five-day administrative archive created between March 20–24 1865 documenting the Cuban colonial state’s full processing of the Spanish barque Encarnación and the 283 Chinese indentured labourers she carried from Macao. The archive contains thirteen manuscript documents all docketed to File No. 539 tracing every step of the arrival-to-assignment cycle: arrival notice medical inspection mortality reporting judicial review of contractual status police authorization sanitary clearance internal administrative circulation and the early phase of labour distribution. The Encarnación is well documented in scholarship. As John Asome notes in Coolie Ships and the Chinese Diaspora 1846–1874 the vessel made eight coolie voyages between 1853 and 1871 transporting 2547 migrants with an average mortality rate of 4.91%. Her 1864–65 voyage departed Macao on November 23 1864 and reached Havana on March 16 1865 landing 274 survivors from the 283 who embarked. The Mariel medical reports describe a voyage marked by ophthalmia dysentery ulcers anasarca pulmonary fevers and a single death from tuberculosis. This archive records with unusual precision how Cuban authorities evaluated certified and redistributed this human cargo upon arrival. Despite being unified under one file number the documents originate from at least six separate offices: Junta Local de Sanidad de MarielJunta de Sanidad de La HabanaGobierno PolíticoGobierno Superior CivilDirección de AdministraciónMerino Gilledo y Cía. And Gelledos y Cía. consignees and brokers What survives is not a stray fragment but a working colonial dossier showing in real time how the Encarnación moved from newly arrived vessel to a documented source of indentured labour within Cuba’s plantation economy. The Chinese coolie trade 1847–1874 brought over 125000 Chinese labourers to Cuba under contracts that although legally framed as “free ” often masked coercion restricted movement and conditions approaching slavery. By the mid-1860s under intense diplomatic criticism Spain developed an elaborate regulatory apparatus intended to prove that these workers were “free contractual migrants. ” That apparatus — medical inspection judicial evaluation mortality accounting manifest verification and authorization for disembarkation — is captured here with exceptional completeness. Within this archive the two Mariel medical actas the mortality note the judicial referral the police authorization and the four-folio passenger manifest together reveal the lived administrative reality of the trade: illnesses documented in precise categories; the single death noted; consignees defending their conduct; and Chinese names transliterated paired with imposed Christian names and absorbed into Cuba’s indentured labour regime. For institutions or collectors building holdings in Chinese diaspora history Cuban colonial history transpacific migration Caribbean labour systems or the slavery-to-post-slavery transition this archive offers an unusually rich and granular look at how the coolie system was operationalized. For collectors it is a rare survival: a concentrated administrative file created over just five days showing the entire process from arrival to assignment. March 20 1865 is the most active date in the archive when both Mariel and Havana offices processed the Encarnación simultaneously. On that single day were produced: the Havana arrival notice; the Guanajay telegram; the internal forwarding memorandum; the formal Merino Gilledo petition; the four-page certified Mariel medical report; the separate one-page Mariel acta; the mortality declaration; and the fully signed four-folio passenger manifest. The subsequent days continue the administrative cycle: judicial review on the 21st police authorization and final Mariel clearance on the 22nd departmental forwarding on the 23rd and labour assignment orders on the 24th. Together these documents form a sharply coherent internally consistent file tracing the Encarnación from first notices of arrival through medical and legal examination and onward to the issuance of cédulas for the first group of 36 labourers. Beaumont's godson writes other nobility and there is one letter of condolence regarding the Marquis' mother's death. A certain concierge in Paris also writes of some intrigue. ‎1941 - 1942 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND JOURNAL OF BUND DEUTSCHER MADEL BdM CAMP MEMORIES ACTIVITIES AND THOUGHTS HANDWRITTEN BY THE CREAM OF GERMANY'S YOUNG WOMEN WHO ARE SERVANTS OF THE NAZI REGIME AND THE THIRD REICH‎

‎BdM CAMP MOOSBURG GERMANY. Very Good. 1941. On offer is an original historically significant manuscript relic of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler's use and manipulation of German women being a 1941 and 1942 diary and journal of a Bund Deutsche Madel BdM League of German Girls or League of German Maidens in English at Camp Moosburg in southern Germany. The journal records nine 9 girls from July 10th to September 4th 1941 and ten 10 girls from July 12th to September 3rd 1942. Included in the group was the Jungmadel Fuhrer or Leader of the Jungmadel. In the earliest index of attendees they are marked as all from Coburg Germany a noted town several hundred kilometers to the north of Camp Moosburg. Almost all of the same girls return in 1942 with at least one new 'madel'. The book was obviously a cherished journal with many flourishes: calligraphic headings and poems photographs handmade shadow art some dry flora and drawings. The book appears hand made with three 3 text blocks bound with a canvas cloth over boards with leather tips on the front cover alone. 121 pages 6 X 8.5 inch. Overall VG. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: 1. BdM Camps were critical to Hitler's rise to power. One online source quotes Kurt Gruber the director of the movement saying: the Hitler Youth "a new youth movement of young social-revolutionary minded Germans" trained to risk their own lives if necessary to free Germany from "the shackles of Capitalists and the enemies of the German race." Also known as 'The League of German Maidens' or 'League of German Girls' the BdM was the female branch of the Nazi party youth movement the Hitler Youth. It was the only female youth organization in Nazi Germany. Also: "BdM.a very heavy emphasis on competition. Just about every task no matter how big or small was turned into an individual team or unit competition. This included boys and girls sports the quality of singing during propaganda marches and Winter Aid collections. Boys and girls were kept constantly busy. The Nazis took advantage of the natural enthusiasm of young people their craving for action and desire for peer approval hoping ultimately each young person would come to regard his or her HJ or BDM unit as a home away from home or perhaps as their real home." 2. The League of German Girls or League of German Maidens was the female branch of the overall Nazi party youth movement the Hitler Youth. It was the only female youth organization in Nazi Germany besides the RAD camp girls and boys. At first the League consisted of two sections: the Jungmadel or Young Girls League for girls ages 10 to 14 and the League proper for girls ages 14 to 18. In 1938 a third section was introduced the Belief and Beauty Society Werk Glaube und Sch"nheit which was voluntary and open to girls between the ages of 17 and 21. Sport was an important section into the movement to educate girls within the National Socialist belief system and to train them for their roles in German society: perfect healthy wife mother and homemaker. Their Home Evenings revolved about domestic training but Saturdays involved strenuous outdoor training. Some of the girl's work even drew harsh criticism from Nazi party leaders such as Heinrich Himmler who felt that these activities were not befitting young girls. Himmler stated in a speech at Bad Toelz: "When I see these girls marching around with their nicely packed backpacks - it's enough to make me sick." The outbreak of war altered the role of the girls as soon as they turned 18. They helped the war effort in many ways. The older girls volunteered as nurses' aides at hospitals or to help at train stations where wounded soldiers or refugees needed a hand. Often the sports training and other activities of the League stayed. Most of the files contain multiple pages as many as 20-30 pieces of correspondence and documents with the odd file having somewhat less. The applications provide a wealth of history of South Carolinians who fought for the Confederacy as their relatives filled out a fair bit of information on their veteran antecedents. On offer is a superb archive of medical manuscript documents having been addressed to the Faculty of Medicine of Paris and its Dean the esteemed Edme-Claude Bourru 1737-1823 famed 18th century French doctor a coin with his likeness was minted author of numerous treatises on venereal disease and presenter of the funeral oration of Guillotin another famed physician more noted for his facilitating the death of humans than of their health. Bourru has signed and made handwritten notes throughtout the archive. Multiple members of the faculty have also autographed and added other comments. Further research will assuredly find a wealth of 'known' signatures. In fine condition with the usual light signs of ageing as with any archive over 220 years old but overall clean and fresh and VG.
