‎1830 - 1867 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF FIVE 5 MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS HANDWRITTEN BY NOTED CONNECTICUT MEDICAL DOCTOR AND DENTIST PLYING HIS TRADE IN NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA‎

‎CHATHAM CONNECTICUT EAST HAMPTON CT BRAZIL. Good. 1830. On offer is an interesting archive of five 5 manuscript journals dated 1830 through 1867 handwritten by Dr. Nathaniel Oliver Cornwall 1816-1903 who was from Chatham Connecticut today known as East Hampton. Cornwall was a fascinating character would become a medical doctor and then later a dentist who spent a great deal of time in South America a more detailed bio follows. The archive will be of interest to historians and researchers of the era as the combined writings details on one hand the personal thoughts as the young man entered adulthood but also a reflection on the education he received. The archive details as follows: 1 1833 Marbled covered Copy Book which is also a Day Book. The beginning pages are ledger style entries showing his expenses inventory of his belongings etc. Then there are several pages of copy book type entries showing heights and distances some drawings. Finally in the back 8 pages of diary entries. This journal is the largest in the bunch measuring about 8" x 13" which gives you a lot of information on each page. Total number of handwritten pages is 55. In this journal he also talks about a ship named the "Ocean." 2 1830 Ledger style journal with 21 handwritten pages. Also in the front are two pages of poetry one titled "On the Independence of South America; Sung in New York" and the other titled "The Nashville Tragedy." There are a lot of names in this journal. 3 1863-1867 Receipt type ledger with expenses. This one is in Spanish or Portuguese kept while he was in Brazil. 12 handwritten pages. 4 1833 Writing work book where he practiced his alphabet letters etc. There is also a handwritten essay in the back. This journal has 17 handwritten pages. 5 Lastly and 1830 Day Book with 43 handwritten pages; expense type entries also listing many names. Some of the many names mentioned are: James Young Denton and Smith James Kane John Jacob Astor Thomas Milner Temple and Camp Minerva Howland Nathan Swain Joseph Hastings Anthony Billings Edward Jones Thomas Grosvenor Samuel Green Jonathan Curtis Theodore Barrell Charles Long James Pitney Thomas Jenkins Elijah Pollack Henry Bell James Vance and so many more. Here are some snippets: "Washington College March 20th 1830 Half past 11 o'clock Have for several days been thinking to write a diary a practice which I have not followed since the first winter of beginning Greek at the goodly town of Cheshire. I wish I had continued it just for the pleasure of accounting to the many many pleasing and as a matter of course often unpleasing incidents of my stay there and to see again my daily progress in Virgil Cicero Sallust and the first elements of Greek which I used to set down with minimal regularity. I shall though never forget those scenes. They are engraved firmly on my mind and the place where I first learned to taste the beauties of Virgil and to enjoy the elegant productions of Cicero….But why am I that moralizing upon the classes and so pedant like talking of my own acquisitions in them I don't know but tis to make a beginning to my journal which would make but poor appearance over to self for whom alone it shall be written without and for a want of which it has been so long neglected I suppose." "March 30th 1830 Been very insolent all day as respects to study…One week now and we shall be at liberty again. Next Wednesday afternoon will probably terminate my second term of college life. This term has passed rapidly with me and been very busy yet I find my mind frequently stretching to the end of it and welcoming its approach with an eagerness not a little unlike that of those who are less pleased with college than myself…How swift are the transitions of thought! How constantly on the wing is our universal cheerer and consoler. Hope! Thus I am continually led into a train of moralizing and thus my consoling pen will run on ____ in publishing the wandering incipiencies of my brain…." The smallest journal measures about 6" x 7 ½" and the largest one 8" x 13". All of them have paper covers and most are in good shape with some foxing on many of the pages. The cover on one of them is very torn but all in all the pages and bindings look good. BIO NOTES: to Dr. Nathaniel Oliver Cornwall 1816-1903 was born in 1816. As a child he attended local schools and then at about 14 years of age Nathaniel was sent to the school of Reverend Asa Cornwall in Cheshire and after that he went off to school in Granby. In 1833 he went to Episcopal Academy in Cheshire. In 1835 began attending Washington College and graduated 1839. After college Nathaniel Cornwall attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York State from which he graduated in 1846. After medical school he accepted a teaching job in South America and within a year decided to go into the medical field in Brazil. After an accidental meeting with a dentist also from Connecticut he decided to become a dentist instead of having a medical practice and for the rest of his career kept that as his profession while living in South America for the next 20 or so years. In 1860 on a visit home to the States he got married to Mary and the couple then returned to South America where his 3 children were born. He had two daughters one of whom died in infancy and a son Edward who became a NY physician. Dr. Cornwall retired relatively early in 1869 at age 53 and lived the rest of his life in Gildersleeve which is now Portland CT on an estate near the trolley line. The family originally had settled in Middletown and nearby areas in the 1700s. ‎1914 - 1916 SUPERB ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT REGIMENTAL RAMC DIARY AND SIGNIFICANT RECORD OF THE 6 DIVISION BRITISH ARMY MEDICAL CORPS' 17 MONTH DAY TO DAY GRIND AT THE FRONT HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENGLISH MAJOR WHO WOULD GO ON THE AUTHOR BOOKS ON HIS SERVICE‎

‎BRITAIN. Good. 1914. On offer is a simply outstanding first hand record of life on the front lines of WWI. All units in the British Army were required after 1907 to keep a Unit war diary. This is not a personal record but rather a unit record of information such as orders movements location activities casualties etc which can be used later for training purposes and as a starting point for a review of tactics - successful and otherwise. It also serves to to create a detailed historical record of each Unit for archival purposes. British Army Units have kept these from 1907 right up to the present day. The physical format is standardized. Inside a heavy card stock cover the loose leaf pages are secured with a metal clip. The faded letters of his name Unit RAMC and 6 Div can be read. Each page has a duplicate page that records a carbon copy. When turned in the original 'top' page of each page goes in the case of the British Army to the National Archives. The carbon copy usually stays with the Unit and goes into the Unit's archives. This War Diary was kept by Major Nathaniel John Rutherford a Major with the Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 6 Division British Army. Apparently instead of turning it in he retained it. It measures approximately 14 inches by 8 1/2 inches and its layout is landscape. There are approximately 260 pages - 200 detailing Unit activities and 60 blank. The Diary is in surprisingly good condition considering it was hauled through some of the most ferocious battles in WWI. It covers the time period from October 2nd 1914 when the Division took up positions at Serches France until March 7 1916 when Major Rutherford was transferred out. The Division was mobilized in Cork Ireland August 4th 1914 and within 11 days was embarked to England. After three weeks training they arrived in France. Almost immediately they were moved to the front and in the Battle of Aisne suffered 1482 casualties. Day by day line by line in some 3000 lines of detailed entries Rutherford records what is happening: "Arrived ADMS 3 rd Corps to arrange for encampment of medical officers" Oct 4 1914; " Sick and wounded evacuated to base" Oct 4 1914. Between Oct 13th and 19th the Division fought in the First Battle of Ypres suffering 4696 casualties. In his notes Rutherford records no new cases of Scarlet fever Oct 15th 1914. On the 6th of June 1915 the Division was back at Ypres where they suffered 10 938 casualties including victims of gas attacks. Rutherford refers directly to this: "Visited Fld Amb. 2 nd Army has reported through 6 Div that complete motor ambulance outfit arrives ABBEVILLE this evening. Informed Hd qtrs I want convoy at L' EBE FME and will distribute from there. Small party of chemical experts arrive at 18 Fld Amb tomorrow and will be attached to Infantry Bas for information of men in use of respirators ." June 6 1915. In the 'Remarks' column he records day by day the casualties: "Aug 12 1915 Casualties: Officers 7 4 wounded; OR Other Ranks 149 116 wounded Aug 13 1915 Casualties: Officers 5 2 wounded OR - 89 wounded 35 Aug 14 1915 Casualties: Officers 4 OR 124 wounded 69 Aug 21 1915 Casualties: Officers 1 wounded OR 66 64 sick 3365 Broughton 2/London Rgt TYPHOID FEVER". In the 17 months that Major Rutherford serves on the Western Front he is continually visiting frontline trenches field aid stations and field ambulance units. He is routinely under fire. As can be seen from the Aug 21 entry above in addition to the horrible wounds caused by combat he has to deal with outbreaks of very serious diseases. Untold hours of his time is taken with dealing with the logistics of a medical unit in the field - continual supply of dressing medicines water and chemicals to deal with the deadly gas attacks. His last entry is Mar 7th 1916: ". asked XIV Corp to request if army to delay my departure a few days 2/Army replies that I must proceed quickly". The War Diary does not record where he was transferred but informal research suggests it was to the Greek theatre of war. Nathanel John Crawford Rutherford 1874-1960 was a grandfather of Mike Rutherford a founding member and bass guitarist of Genesis band. He served as a doctor at the RAMS for over three decades and published two books about his war experiences - Soldiering With A Stethoscope an account about of work in a field hospital during Boer War and the First World War and Memories of an Army Surgeon. This is a rare and very valuable find. It is an unfiltered first-hand account of fighting at the front day in and day out for 17 months. Wood's Relationship With These Artists And Others Associated With The Avant-Garde Movement Of The Early 20Th Century Earned Her The Designation As "Mama Of Dada". Marcel Duchamp Encouraged Her To Draw Inviting Her To Use His Studio As A Place In Which To Work. Figures Were An Important Part Of The Artist's Work During The 1930S And 40S. She Explored Both Vessel Forms And Sculpture Throughout Her Career. As Her Skills Increased Wood Consciously Retained A Naive Illustrative Style To Communicate Her Commentaries On Life And Love. This Approach Makes Clear Her Love Of All Types Of Non-Western Folk And Primitive Art. Deciding To Make The Teapot Herself She Enrolled In A Ceramic Class At Hollywood High School. This Hobby Turned Into A Passion Which Lasted Another Sixty Years And She Studied With A Number Of Leading Ceramists Including Gertrude And Otto Natzler. Ultimately Wood Developed A Signature Style Of Glazing An All-Over In-Glaze Luster That Draws The Metallic Salts To The Surface Of The Glaze By Starving The Kiln Of Oxygen. In 1947 Wood Felt Her Career Was Established Enough For Her To Build A Home. She Settled In Ojai California In 1948 To Be Near The Indian Philosopher J. Krishnamurti. Signed and inscribed by Kisakürek as 'Sevgili müdürüm Zeki Açabay'a ihtiramla, 8/3/61'. Kisakürek was a Turkish poet, novelist, playwright, and Islamist ideologue. He is also known simply by his initials NFK. He was noticed by the French philosopher Henri Bergson, who later became his teacher. In his own words, he was born in "a huge mansion in Çemberlitas, on one of the streets descending towards Sultanahmet" in 1904. His father was Abdülbaki Fazil Bey who held several posts including deputy judge in Bursa, the public prosecutor in Gebze, and finally, a judge in Kadiköy. His mother was an emigree from Crete. He was raised at the Çemberlitas mansion of his paternal grandfather Kisakürekzade Mehmed Hilmi Efendi of Maras; he was named after his great-grandfather Ahmed Necib, as well as his father, Fazil. He studied in many schools during his primary education, including the French School in Gedikpasa, Robert College of Istanbul, as well as the Naval School. He received religious courses from Ahmed Hamdi of Akseki and science courses from Yahya Kemal at the Naval School but he was actually influenced by Ibrahim Askî, whom he defined to have "penetrated into deep and private areas in many inner and outer sciences from literature and philosophy to mathematics and physics". Ibrahim Askî provided his first contact with Sufism even at a "plan of skin over skin". "After completing candidate and combat classes" of Naval School, Kisakürek entered the Philosophy Department of Darülfünûn and graduated from there (1921-1924). One of his closest friends in philosophy was Hasan Ali Yücel. He studied in Paris for one year with the scholarship provided by the Ministry of National Education (1924-1925), until the scholarship was canceled. After returning home in 1926, he worked at Holland, Osmanli and Is Banks (1926-1939), and gave lectures at the Faculty of Linguistics and History and Geography and the State Conservatoire in Ankara and the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul (1939-1942). Having established a relationship with the press in his youth, Kisakürek quit civil service to earn his living from writing and magazines. Necip Fazil's life took a turn in 1934 when he met Abdülhakim Arvasi, a sheik of the Sufi Naqshbandi order. He became one of his most notable disciples, remaining a follower until the sheik's death in 1943. Appropriating his anti-semitic ideas from Europe, Kisakürek regarded Jews as the corrupting element within Western civilization and described them as the originator of Marxism and capitalism. He held them responsible for the early conflicts between Muslims and the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Kisakürek's publications included the Turkish translation of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and praise for Henry Ford's The International Jew, as well as a political program in which he wrote: "Chief among these treacherous and insidious elements to be cleansed are the Dönmes and the Jews." Necip Fazil was awarded the First Prize of C.H.P. Play Contest in 1947 with his play Sabir Tasi (Stone of Patience). Kisakürek was awarded the titles of "Great Cultural Gift" by the Ministry of Culture (25 May 1980) and "Greatest Living Poet of Turkish" by the Foundation of Turkish Literature upon the 75th anniversary of his birth. Kisakürek sought to replace the Kemalist secular notion of nationalism with an Islamist one. Within Turkish Islamism, he represented the concept of "Islamization from above" through the capture of government. Since the late 1970s, Kisakürek has been an icon for Turkish Islamists. It is dated 6 May 1987 and mentions a possible exhibition of Martin's treasures at the Morgan Library "in the fall." Without saying so the letter hints that the Morgan would be an appropriate repository for Martin's incredible library. The attempt proved to be futile as the Martin collection was sold at auction in 1989 and 1990 realizing a total of $35303000. Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket which has 1 small chip to the rear panel. The jacket is protected by a removable Brodart clear-plastic sleeve. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a library discard. Pages are crisp clean and unmarked. 1986. First Edition. Includes a bibliography of printing by Caxton in Cologne Bruges and Westminster. This book discusses a previously unknown Caxton printing and reproduces in facsimile vellum strips utilized in the binding of a volume of other Caxton imprints from the Rosenwald collection.
