According to the collation the second part lacks a half-title or title for the second and third letters. However we believe that the same title was used for these different parts and that it was placed only at the head of the first letter of the second part. The collections sold did not always contain all the parts with different pagination found in this copy. For example the copy in the Bibliothèque nationale de France does not have these 2 parts second letter and third letter of the second part; it contains only the last two letters attached to the first two without the second part. First letter on the Comédie française. Second letter on the opera. Second part on the Comédie italienne three letters. Two final letters on the fairs of S. Germain and S. Laurent. The author presents the contemporary situation of spectacles in Paris by examining the Comédie française the opera for which the author lists recent performances musicians and composers the Comédie italienne and the spectacles of the fairs. This edition also appeared in Amsterdam published by Changuion. Picart's figures were taken from the 1718 edition they are printed on thick paper. Contemporary full scaled calf binding. Richly decorated spine with raised bands head and tail rolls. Green morocco title and volume labels. Triple fillet frame on covers. Green painted edges. One tear with lack at head of volume I; headcap of volume II worn down; lack at head of volume III. Several corners bumped. Lower right corner worn. Despite the noted defects handsome binding with very decorative appearance. Fresh copy with wide margins. After the great edition of Boileau's works published in 1718 in folio format and given the success fine editions of this author followed one after another in 1722 1729 1745 with variants. This last edition well printed whose subtle typographical variations suggest the reduction of a folio has been revised and the spelling has been modernized; the pamphlet Boileau aux prises avec les jésuites has been restored and a life of the author has been added. Finally one cannot emphasize enough the critical quality of this edition which takes up the abundant and judicious remarks and commentaries of Saint-Marc from the 1745 edition. These works contain a memoir on the life of Boindin by Boindin himself his theatrical pieces volume II containing various studies and research by the author: on the sounds of language phonetic studies on Roman names on Roman tribes and finally on ancient theatre. Boindin was an essential figure in 18th-century intellectual life one of the central figures at café Procope where he was one of the principal debaters. His comedies enjoyed some success the first was written in collaboration with Houdar de la Motte; the various memoirs that compose volume II were presented by the author when he joined the Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Medals. Missing marbled endpaper pasted to the first blank endpaper at beginning and end of volume. 2 pale dampstains on title page and some yellow dampstains in margins; top and left margins of about twenty leaves frayed by 0.5 cm due to old dampstaining that weakened the paper. Rubbing some surface wear on boards. Copy trimmed rather short. Rich 17th-century binding but with defects. Famous work that enjoyed immense popular success of this Greek grammar by the philologist Nicolas Clénard whose master was Henri Estienne. The Latin is in roman characters and the Greek in italics. The Treatise on Police while secondarily being a history of regulations in Antiquity and the exercise of police power contains all ordinances and rules in every domain that is everything relating to public law food commerce spectacles prisons. for the city of Paris. The first volume also treats the various police corps and their administration. It was in 1667 that Lamoignon First President of the Parliament of Paris suggested the idea to Nicolas Delamare of writing a work describing police methods in a great city; Colbert's archives and rich library were opened to him for this purpose. ""This work is not"" says the author ""a simple collection of ordinances as I had first proposed; these are dissertations on all matters of police; it is a history of all laws and all regulations from the establishment of the most ancient republics to the present."" From the first pages of his Treatise Delamare gave a broad definition of police as an ""art of procuring a comfortable and tranquil life."" Delamare's original plan envisioned 12 books; only 6 appeared. The first book treats ""Police in general and its magistrates and officers"" the second ""religion"" the third ""morals"" the fourth ""health"" and the fifth ""provisions."" Published in 1598, Quatre premiers livres des navigations (Travels in Turkey) recorded Nicolay's observations about the Ottoman court and peoples from his 1551 mission to Istanbul on behalf of the French government. The book served as the first comprehensive survey of customs and costumes in the Ottoman world, and is hailed as one of the earliest and most accurate depictions of the Islamic world to appear in Europe. Travels in Turkey achieved a high level of commercial success upon its release. It was later reissued and translated for a number of different countries, including Italy, the Netherlands, England, and Germany. The widespread popularity of the book contributed to the proliferation of costume books throughout Europe at the end of the 16th century, and continued to influence Orientalist artists well into the 19th century such as Eugene Delacroix and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Travels in Turkey is divided in four books, following Nicolay's voyage to Istanbul, accounts of ethnic groups and Ottoman court life, and the religious and military administration in Istanbul. Louis Danet made 60 engravings based on Nicolay's original drawings, which serve as the core of the books, and each print is followed by a caption, describing Islamic ritual, religion and monuments. The images cover all aspects of Ottoman daily life, and depict figures ranging from sultans and sultanas to wrestlers, cooks and Janissary generals.‎

The second volume has a more practical aspect and abounds with clinical examples and remedies often very simple such as milk. Overall rubbed particularly at edges with scratches and scuffs on boards. Interior perfectly fresh. This collection by Fleurimont is an ""unofficial continuation of the Medals on the principal events of the reign of Louis XIV"" Sarmant Bibliothèque de l'École des Chartes 2000 p. 88. A slight tear to the last compartment at foot of volume II. Trace of dampstain to upper right corner of several leaves at beginning of volume I. Good copy. Picaresque novel recounting the vicissitudes of a rogue's existence in service to several masters bourgeois and noble. Satire is never far away and humor often ribald painting a biting portrait of contemporary society. The character's incredible adventures unfold between Holland and principally France. The author seems to have read 17th-century Spanish and French picaresque novels one even recognizes the influence of Don Quixote in the fact that the hero knows love and bravery only through chivalric romances which leads him into comical situations. As the novel progresses events become intertwined and characters reappear thus creating a narrative thread. Nicolas Heinsius is the son of an illustrious lineage of men of letters Nicolas Heinsius his father and Daniel Heinsius his grandfather. A handsome and highly decorative set.   Before the dictionary of plants the prolegomena extending over 248 pages consist of various introductions notably to Tournefort's classification system the reproductive system of plants the different orders etc. Each plant in addition to its scientific description is accompanied by an article on its uses and the places where it is found. A French botanist who died in 1817 Jolyclerc was a professor of natural history passionately devoted to his discipline which he regarded as the foremost of all sciences and he was the first translator of Linné whom he revered.NB: some copies were issued with 657 plates though such examples appear to be exceedingly rare. On offer is a super relic of French Catholic devotion being a manuscript book of the famed story "Saint Alexis" or "L'illustre Olympie" by Nicolas Mary Desfontaines b. circa 1610 in Rouen d. 4 February 1652 in Angers; actor playwright and novelist and noted French poet see BIO NOTES. Over 80 pages handwritten by a young Pyrenees student in very nice steady calligraphic hand and as stated on the title page: "Tragédie copiée par moy Jean Baratgin habitant du lieu de Bourisp le 24 May mil Sept Cent cinquante neuf 1759". A separate title page at the rear identifies the Teacher M. Jure and the Ecole Bourisp. One online source provides: "The best known of the early Old French saints' lives is the Vie de Saint Alexis the life of Saint Alexis a translation/rewriting of a Latin legend. Saint Alexis fled from his family's home in Rome on his wedding night and dwelled as a hermit in Syria until a mystical voice began telling people of his holiness. In order to avoid the earthly honor that came with such fame he left Syria and was driven back to Rome where he lived as a beggar at his family's house unrecognized by all until his death. He was only identified later when the pope read his name in a letter held in the dead saint's hand. Although the saint left his family in order to devote his life more fully to God the poem makes clear that his father mother and wife are saved by the Alexis' intercession and join him in Paradise. The earliest and best surviving text is in St. Albans Psalter written probably at St Albans England in the second or third decade of the twelfth century. Saint Alexius or Alexis of Rome was an Eastern saint whose veneration was later transplanted to Rome a process facilitated by the fact that according to the earlier Syriac legend that a "Man of God" of Edessa Mesopotamia who during the episcopate of Bishop Rabula 412-435 lived by begging and shared the alms he received with other poor people was after his death there found to be a native of Rome. The Greek version of his legend made Alexius the only son of Euphemianus a wealthy Christian Roman of the senatorial class. Alexius fled his arranged marriage to follow his holy vocation. Disguised as a beggar he lived near Edessa in Syria accepting alms even from his own household slaves who had been sent to look for him but did not recognize him until a miraculous vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary singled him out as a "Man of God." Fleeing the resultant notoriety he returned to Rome so changed that his parents did not recognize him but as good Christians took him in and sheltered him for seventeen years which he spent in a dark cubbyhole beneath the stairs praying and teaching catechism to children. After his death his family found writings on his body which told them who he was and how he had lived his life of penance from the day of his wedding for the love of God. St Alexius' cult developed in Syria and spread throughout the Eastern Roman Empire by the 9th century. Only from the end of the 10th century did his name begin to appear in any liturgical books in the West. Since before the eighth century there was on the Aventine in Rome a church that was dedicated to St Boniface. In 972 Pope Benedict VII transferred this almost abandoned church to the exiled Greek metropolitan Sergius of Damascus. The latter erected beside the church a monastery for Greek and Latin monks soon made famous for the austere life of its inmates. To the name of St Boniface was now added that of St Alexius as titular saint of the church and monastery known as Santi Bonifacio e Alessio. It is evidently Sergius and his monks who brought to Rome the veneration of St Alexius. The Eastern saint according to his legend a native of Rome was soon very popular with the folk of that city and this church being associated with the legend was considered to be built on the site of the home that Alexius returned to from Edessa. St Alexius is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology under 17 July in the following terms: "At Rome in a church on the Aventine Hill a man of God is celebrated under the name of Alexius who as reported by tradition abandoned his wealthy home for the sake of becoming poor and to beg for alms unrecognized." While the Roman Catholic Church continues to recognize St Alexius as a saint his feast was removed from the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints in 1969 which lists the saints to be celebrated everywhere at Mass and in the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Rite. The reason given was the legendary character of the written life of the saint. The Catholic Encyclopedia article regarding St. Alexius remarked: "Perhaps the only basis for the story is the fact that a certain pious ascetic at Edessa lived the life of a beggar and was later venerated as a saint." The Tridentine Calendar gave his feast day the rank of "Simple" but by 1862 it had become a "Semidouble" and in Rome itself a "Double". It was reduced again to the rank of "Simple" in 1955 and in 1962 became a "Commemoration". According to the rules in the present-day Roman Missal the saint may now be celebrated everywhere on his feast day with a "Memorial" unless in some locality an obligatory celebration is assigned to that day. The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates St Alexius on 17 March. Five Byzantine Emperors four Emperors of Trebizond and numerous other eastern European and Russian personalities have borne his name. The tale of St Alexius has parallels with that of The Prodigal Son as told in the biblical Book of Luke. As it appears in Legenda aurea later retold in the Gesta Romanorum it is almost identical with a tale told of the Tathagata Buddha in the famous Lotus Sutra.
