The third part composed of 47 leaves contains various pieces of prose some Latin poetry and six pieces in French verse on Rapin. The general title is decorated with a vignette engraved on copper with the arms of France and Navarre. Later binding c. 1860 in full blonde shagreen spine with four false raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and a green title label triple gilt fillet framing the boards decorative gilt board-edges edges gilt. According to the author's wishes this edition was established by his friend Gillot and under the direction of Scévole de Sainte-Marthe. Fine gilt decorative board-edges framing the boards. Gilt roulettes on the leading edges and headcaps. All edges marbled. Headcaps slightly rubbed and some minor wormholes. Each volume shows dampstaining to outer margin. Quite good copy of handsome appearance. The first volume contains the author's most famous text: L'Antiquité dévoilée the second the Recherches sur le despotisme oriental an Essai philosophique que le gouvernement as well as other texts: Esope fabuliste Du bonheur Le Christianisme dévoilé Dissertation sur Elie et Enoch Examen critique de Saint Paul and Dissertation sur Saint Pierre. The Extrait d'une lettre sur la vie et les ouvrages de Mr. Boulanger which precedes it would be by Diderot according to Grimm. Le Christianisme dévoilé would be by D'Holbach while the Recherches sur le despotisme oriental is a collective work bringing together d'Holbach and Boulanger. Around Baron d'Holbach formed a sort of coterie with authors such as Diderot Boulanger or Naigeon a spiritual association of figures who had all worked on the great work of the Encyclopédie and who assembled around a certain number of strong ideas: a critique of religious but also philosophical superstition an atheistic materialism and a utilitarian politics; each of the authors worked toward the deconstruction of Christianity and the edification of materialism achieving the true combat of the Enlightenment for man's liberation from religious spiritual and political constraints. The edition does contain the letter to Helvetius absent from most reissues. Contemporary full grained calf binding. Smooth spine with ornaments. The gilding appears to have been renewed on the title-label. Quite a handsome copy.This famous political treatise was initially written to serve as an introduction to reading Montesquieu's The Spirit of Laws the work concluding moreover with remarks on that work. The work was incorporated into The Encyclopedia in abridged form under the article Political Economy. It is in theocracy that Boulanger locates the origin of oriental despotism. Boulanger gives numerous examples of traces of ancient theocracies in the behavior of despots and despotism.Some critics believe that the original work was indeed by Boulanger but that it was revised by d'Holbach in light of his own theories.20th-century armorial bookplate library of P. We know that the publisher was actually Delalain and that it was printed in Paris but the publisher used a false address to evade censorship. Contemporary brown calf binding. Smooth spine decorated with acorn tools. Red morocco title label. Upper joint narrowly split at head. Handsome copy. Le pornographe is a manifesto for the regulation of prostitution. The author is the inventor of the neologism that combines two Greek roots and literally means: one who writes about prostitutes. This project for regulating prostitutes has the originality of having a literary form Restif using letters to Madame des Tianges to detail the situation of prostitutes. The author's main thesis being as follows: This appearing as a necessary evil it must be controlled by creating specialized houses supervised by police and doctors and administered in a manner to guarantee an establishment for the children of women of pleasure. The most surprising thing for the reader is to observe that the author has created rules for everything: food linen hygiene. There is certainly a real fascination of Restif for prostitution but it never descends into immorality; on the contrary the author seems to be seeking a new morality that takes immorality into account. An exceedingly rare letter from Restif: « Les événemens du 18 fructidor' m'ont rendu la vie . en affligeant mon cur » 30 fructidor 1797 An V 16 septembre 1897 18.50 x 21.30 cm 3 pages sur un double feuillet Extremely rare autograph letter signed « Restif Labretone » addressed to Citoyenne Fontaine. Three pages written in black ink on a double sheet of laid paper. Remains of a wax seal folds inherent to mailing. This letter was published with some inaccuracies in Lettres inédites de Restif de Labretone by V. Forest and É. Grimaud 1883. The Fontaine couple are merchants from Grenoble and Restif de la Bretonne began corresponding with them on March 15 1797. Important letter testifying to the completion of the publication of Restif's great autobiographical work: Monsieur Nicolas ou les Ressorts du Cur Humain dévoilé. « I will have completed the Cur humain Dévoilé within 15 days I will prepare your package immediately to have it ready. » The first eight volumes of this great autobiographical work printed by Restif himself a typesetter by trade in his residence at 11 rue de la Bûcherie were entrusted to the « dishonest » bookseller Nicolas Bonneville who did not honor his debts to the writer. Besides health issues « I exchange my illnesses and do not cure them » Restif also shares with his correspondent his literary setbacks: « The Author of Nature will preserve a sincere friend for me to compensate for the scoundrels of the Institute and the perfidious Mercier ». Indeed the previous year the author learned with bitterness that he was not admitted to the National Institute and Louis-Sébastien Mercier who had praised him in his Tableau de Paris and supported his candidacy then turned away from him. To this sum of misfortunes financial difficulties are added. Penniless and living on meager state pensions he maintains all his support for the Republic: « By what fatality do I never see the views of the rulers who welcome me; or how do they not see at once that I am attached to the Revolution to the point that I still love it even when it beats me. » Restif profoundly anti-royalist wrote several pamphlets to this effect and had just added to the end of Monsieur Nicolas an apology for the coup d'état of 18 Fructidor Year V. However this date marks the end of the allowance granted to him by Lazare Carnot after his failure at the Institute: « You know the events of 18 Fructidor; I will not speak to you about them. They have given me back my life; but by afflicting both my heart and my gratitude. » But Restif's great sorrow is the loss of his daughter Filette born from his adventure with Louise Allan whose paternity was revealed to him only late: « I am writing to you from bed weeping over my Filette who died 11 months and ten days ago . Filette was my daughter and Louise's whose soul and beauty she had. » Autograph letters signed by Restif de La Bretonne that have survived to this day are extremely rare. unknown

Italy. Very Good. 1758. On offer is a super 1750s handwritten Italian manuscript book of militaria which appears to have been an officer in training's vade mecum notebook or journal as evidenced by an extensive three page 'Tavola' Table of Contents with chapters on military protocol etiquette theory tactics and practice . This 250 year old manuscript is bound in simple though charming beige colored thick card stock with a fold over flap and a very interesting binding on the spine. Both covers are blank with no writing titles or designs with the exception of the letter "T" handwritten on the back cover. The text paper is of premium quality with a partial watermark discernible. As to authorship and ownership the only clues are on the last pages wherein our author made some personal notes including references to "Capitan Tenente Lieutenant Captain 10 Giugno 1758 and with a name "Nicolo Enzzo Savio." Researchers with a facility for Italian will most assuredly be able to fill in the blanks. The book has one page preface three page 'Tavola' of contents and then 158 pages of writing 11 blank pages for a total of 175 pages. The author hand numbered and miss-numbered the pages twice at pages 68 for one extra page and page 105 for two extra pages but stopped numbering at page 158. There are also a number of stubs of paper having been cut or torn out but no evidence of any writing or ink anywhere on the stubs. The last page of text does seem to conclude this manuscript. 5 1/2" x 7 3/4" soft cover. Solimene and engraved by F. de Louvemont. The engravings are fine and beautiful. Like the copy in the Library of Congress visible online page by page the work has a title frontispiece without a title page duplicating the title thereafter. The copy is complete. Contemporary full vellum binding. Spine with raised bands unlettered. Title in black ink. Body of the work detached from the spine noticeable on the lower board side when opening the book. The copy is however in very good condition and quite fresh. A binder's error places leaf 257 after a preliminary leaf ad lectorum and after leaf 259. This didactic poem had great success in its time due to its general themes; the two poems indeed form a universal history of fishing and navigation. After her son John was elected president in 1960 Rose "became a sort of quiet celebrity" and appeared on the International Best Dressed List. Most of her social activities consisted of involvement in charities and women's groups. Very good in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association. Danish pastor Svend Aage Nielsen founded the The Kennedy Society of Denmark in on 29th May 1967 – John F. Kennedy’s 50th birthday – after a memorial service in Toreby church. The Kennedy Society's purpose is "to keep the inspiration and vision of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy alive so that their good words can be translated into good deeds." Pastor Svend Aage Nielsen has also published a number of books including Kennedy's Philosophy of Life which draws upon both scriptural wisdom and John F. On "Treasury Chambers / Whitehall S.W." letterhead Niemeyer writes "Mr. McKenna wishes me to return to you the drawing with his autograph enclosed" boldly signed. "McKenna" would be Niemeyer's boss Reginald McKenna 1863-1943 British banker who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1915-16 when Niemeyer was still an underling there. This Neue Ausgabe consisted of the 788 unsold sheets from the first edition of 1882 with the addition of a new title page Nietzsches new 10-page Vorrede Preface 2 new half-title pages and a new 5th book "Wir Furchtlosen" We Fearless Ones. Thus 75 new pages along with fourteen pages of poetry appear here for the first time. While the first edition appeared in 1882 it was incomplete. This is truly the first edition of the complete and definitive text of what is today read as The Gay Science. Nietzsche felt that the Vorrede to this and the other reissues of 1886/7 were among the best things that he ever wrote. <br /> <br />The Gay Science which is the final and culminating volume of Nietzsches aphoristic works contains the first instance of his famous statement Gott ist tot! God is Dead first in section 108 then more elaborately detailed in the Parable of the Madman in section 125 and for a third time in section 343. The 1st copies became available just before the Bayreuther Festspiele. Wagner had invited Helen Zimmern based on his favorable opinion on her biography of Schopenhauer. Nietzsche also attended and their meeting resulted in later invitations. Zimmern spent a few weeks in Sils Maria in the summer of 1886 where Nietzsche used to reside in the summer months in those years. Their discussions in this summer must have helped Zimmern quite a lot when later translating Jenseits of which she got 2 presentation copies. The last favorable publication of Nietzsche on Wagner followed by bitter attacks in FALL WAGNER and NIETZSCHE CONTRA WAGNER. The 4th and last Observation a series originally. TP III-VI 7-111 Octavo. First Edition First Issue. Schaberg 25a. There were approximately 650 copies of the first edition in the first issue state. The second Unconventional Observation attacked the then current faith in historical research that was one of Nietzsche's major complaints with contemporary German culture and a topic to which he returned with some regularity in his later works. Contrary to prevailing opinion Nietzsche argued that historical knowledge is valuable only when it has a positive effect on human beings sense of life contending that history can play only three positive roles which he termed the "monumental" the "antiquarian" and "critical" explaining each of these in some detail before going on to enumerate the dangers of the current scholarly fascination with "history for its own sake." Finally Nietzsche suggests an antidote to the psychologically and ethically devastating effects of the conventional approaches to history proposing an amalgam of what he terms the historical the unhistorical and the suprahistorical attitudes as the healthiest approach to the integration of a historical sense into the life of the individual and of course for Nietzsche this always means the exceptional individual. As he remarks in the present essay tellingly for the understanding of the Nietzschean philosophy as a whole: The goal of humanity cannot lie in the end Ende but only in its highest specimens. In the words of Walter Kaufmann: Perhaps there is no more basic statement of Nietzsches philosophy in all of his writings than this sentence. CONDITION: ." LATE 1980s EARLY 1990s ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK OF PHOTOGRAPHS AND POSTCARDS ALONGSIDE A HISTORY OF THE BUILDINGS AND LANDMARKS OF A NOTED AND STORIED BRITISH ISLE
LUNDY ISLAND BRISTOL CHANNEL UNITED KINGDOM UK. Good. 1990. On offer is a handmade book and love-letter of sorts to the Island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel. In its pages the author Julia Abel Smith has written a tremendous amount of information not on the local flora and fauna which have been written about many times but on the local history and buildings that the author believes make Lundy Island one of the most unique places on Earth. The book seems to have been compiled around the late 1980s/early 1990s. There are 15 chapters in all. Two of the chapters are on the local history while the rest are on the local landmarks on the island. The chapters included in the book are as such: History of Lundy Island The Barn Bramble Villa The Castle The Castle Cottage Government House Hanmers Millcombe House The Old LIght The Old House and Square Cottage The Old School St. Johns Cottage Stoneycroft Tibbetts and Lundys Ship - The MS Oldenburg as well as a small chapter of acknowledgements. The chapters are usually only four or five pages of writing long. The Old Light dealing with the history of the Beacon Hill Lighthouse is the longest at eight pages of writing. However many of these chapters include pages of photographs dealing with the subject of the chapter usually with a caption describing the photograph and the date taken. These include photographs of the interior of the Millcombe House the building of the corrugated iron church Church of St. Helena and many others usually taken around the late 19th century. Each page in this book is typed and put into a laminated page-cover that is bound to the spine. From the small acknowledgements chapter the author has stated that the information for these notes was taken from Lundy by A & M Langham My Life on Lundy by Felix Gade A Lundy Album compiled by Myrtle Langham and The Illustrated Lundy News 1970 - 1975.The photographs come from the collection of Anthony Langham who kindly edited the text. Included with the main text of the book the book also contains a full-page map of Lundy Island with a key showing the location of the landmarks written about in the book a number more photographs of scenes around Lundy Lundy Working Horses c.1900; The Hall at Millcombe c.1898; Interior of Corrugated Iron Church c.1898; etc. three pamphlets from the island Lundy Field Society: An Introduction to Lundy Grey Seals Lundy Field Society: An Introduction to Lundy Underwater Life and The Lundy Bobbitt a page on yellow paper of Test Drive Results for the restaurant Smugglers on occasion of the Wedding Anniversary Dinner date: August 5 1992 of Barry and Wendy Wheeler. The Performance Ratings of the restaurant are very tongue-in-cheek. It is unclear why this has been included in the book other than Smugglers is on Lundy Island. Barry and Wendy Wheeler are most probably friends of the author. There are also included: A number of postcards sent to Nigel & Lindsey. These two are most probably the original owners of this book. Included as well: 4 pages of Recipe for Lundy Island from Caterveg Issue 2. There are also two typed pages describing the Lundy Island Brewery and the process by which it makes beer and The Marisco Tavern the centre of island life. Both pages contain a small square card bearing the respective names of the establishments. Finally the last page of the book is a hand drawn picture of 3 Atlantic Puffins in an amateur but accomplished style. In the beginning of the book there are 3 loose issues of the Illustrated Lundy News from 1972 and 1973 and the first issue of the Lundy Island Chronicle volume 1 No. 1 from 1983. The book is roughly 70 pages in length of which 65 or have typed pages photographs or ephemera in the laminated sheet. All the pages are typed and in excellent shape. The pages are contained within a simple black leather cover. I mentioned before that the Nigel & Linzi are most probably the previous owners of this book. They may have commissioned the history of the island or managed to find it already published. Research into who Nigel and Linzi has led me to believe that they were at one time the proprietors of the Marisco Tavern and possibly the Smugglers restaurant review contained within the book. From the Telegraph: Nigel Walker and Linzi Takagi. After a long career in catering and pub management they ran the Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor followed by the Marisco Tavern on Lundy Island Nigel and Linzi moved to Ilfracombe nine years ago. Having bought a house in the town they leased a former fish shop on the High Street and slowly converted it to sell hand-made confectionery produced in a workshop on the premises. Historical Notes: Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel. It lies 12 miles 19 km off the coast of Devon England in the district of Torridge about a third of the distance across the channel from Devon England to South Wales. Lundy gives its name to a British sea area and is one of the islands of England. Lundy has been designated by Natural England as national character area 159 one of England's natural regions. In 2007 Lundy had a resident population of 28 people including volunteers. These include a warden ranger island manager and farmer as well as bar and house-keeping staff. Most live in and around the village at the south of the island.
