He Became A Post-Doctoral Researcher Instructor And Assistant Professor At The California Institute Of Technology Until 1958. He Was Then Appointed Assistant Professor At The University Of Wisconsin-Madison Received Tenure There In 1959 And Was Promoted To Full Professor In 1961. He Was A Guggenheim Fellow For The Academic Year 1960-1961. In 1973 He Moved From Madison To The University Of California At Santa Cruz As Professor Of Astronomy And Astrophysics And Director Of Lick Observatory A Position He Held Until 1981. He Remained On The Faculty At Uc Santa Cruz Until His Retirement In 1993. Thereafter Emeritus Professor Osterbrock Continued To Make Daily Trips To His Office On Campus To Work On His Research To Keep Publishing And To Maintain An Active Role In The Astronomical Community. At The Time Of His Death He Had Authored 12 Monographs On Astronomy And The History Of Astronomy Including In 1989 The Influential Textbook Astrophysics Of Gaseous Nebulae And Active Galactic Nuclei And The Recently Updated And Revised 2Nd Edition 2006 Written Along With Gary Ferland Of The University Of Kentucky. Alongside His More Than 150 Articles On Astronomy And Astrophysics He Published 70 Historical Studies Biographical Memoirs And Obituaries Of Major Figures In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Astronomy And Numerous Book Reviews. Osterbrock's Research Included Work On The Nature Of Ionized Gases Around Hot Stars And Studying Active Galactic Nuclei Powered By Black Holes. ‎MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA AUS. Good. 1897. On offer is a fascinating very readable account of a sea voyage from England to Australia in beginning in September 1897. The very charming author is Oswald G. Geach who was born in Lostwithiel Cornwall in 1875. Following in his father's footsteps an 1881 census lists him as Headmaster Oswald became an art teacher/master and traveled to Australia to take up a teaching position in time becoming Senior Master at Boxhill College Melbourne. Mr. Geach writes in a most pleasant and insightful manner and includes his observations on Las Palmas in the Canary Islands crossing the Equator Cape Town in South Africa and many of the author's fellow passengers. This diary offers a many faceted look of the world at the turn of the 19th century as Mr. Geach confides in his diary all the many foibles and traits of his many ship board companions and never fails to provide anecdotes of interest and sometimes fitful signs of the times: many references especially after docking in Cape Town refer to those with dark skins in many impolite ways. Our writer always reveals his youthful and artistic personality but with an uncommon maturity for a such a young man by way of his writings. Sadly found in the diary and included with the diary is a printed sheet entitled 'Oswald G. Geach An Appreciation' which appears to be the eulogy for the short lived Mr. Geach whose funeral was in 1910 or 1911. A life cut short and from the note filled with some unspecified long term illness Mr. Geach was as early as 1909 becoming known back in England for his paintings some of which became part of the Walker Gallery during the Liverpool Winter Exhibition. A graduate of the Westminster Training College for Wesleyan Teachers but later emigrated to Australia hoping the weather would help improve his health. Quarter leather binding over marbled boards. The spine cap is almost completely worn away with only a few sections of leather remaining. Boards are worn to edges cup ring to front cover. Binding is loose but covers and all pages are still attached. Internally the 8.25 x 10.25 inch book's 96 handwritten pages are in excellent condition. Hand decorated page preceding title page hand decorated title and contents pages. Clean text with no markings or foxing. On offer is a superb 19th Century manuscript relic of European genealogy and family history from the personal library of the fascinating and controversial Major-General John Frederick Charles Fuller CB CBE DSO 1 September 1878 - 10 February 1966 a British Army officer author military historian strategist notable as an early theorist of modern armoured warfare including categorising principles of warfare. He was also the inventor of "artificial moonlight". He was also a noted occultist and for a time close friend of legendary occultist Aleister Crowley. The lovely 38 page red cover book is dated August 1888 Naunhof Germany near Leipzig engraved with the name JFC Fuller in silver lettering the contents entirely in German are handwritten in a fine calligraphic hand. Fuller's name is inscribed on the first inner page. The book signed by Otto de la Chevallerie is a history and genealogy of the Chevallerie family and states that only 5 copies of the book were made and all kept in the family. It notes that one copy went to a son-in-law and that man was Fuller's father through his marriage to Selma Marie Phillipine de la Chevallerie. Overall VG. BIO NOTES: One online source provides: Fuller John Frederick Charles 1878-1966 army officer was born on 1 September 1878 at The Pallant Chichester Sussex. He was the eldest son of the Revd Alfred Fuller 1832-1927 of the parish of West Itchenor and his French wife Selma Marie Phillipine de la Chevallerie who had grown up near Leipzig. Fuller had a cosmopolitan background and when he was eight the family moved to Lausanne Switzerland. In 1889 he moved back to Sussex to attend a preparatory school Fulmer House West Worthing before attending Malvern College 1893-5. Lacking ambition or direction Fuller was placed in the army class at the suggestion of his maternal grandfather.
