Kinney and E. Styron offers a large collection of engravings that were made by 16th/17th and 18th century artists for the Metamorphoses. The last fourty years have seen a huge increase in attention to Ovids poetry. § This is the first edition of the works of Ovid produced by the Dutch classical schollar Pieter Burman in Latin Petrus Burmannus 1668-1741. He tells in the preface to this edition leaf 8 that he follows the 'editionum emendatissimam' Elsevier edition of Nicolaas Heinsius of 1658-1661. He found it however necessary to restore the text where Heinsius's conjectures were groundless and too bold. In the preface he also announces a more ambitious edition of Ovid 'quae brevi sequetur' with notes of him and of other learned predecessors. This augmented and corrected four volume edition which long remained the standard edition was published fourteen year later by Burmannus in 1727. Petrus Burmannus was professor of Eloquence Latin at the University of Utrecht from 1696 and was transferred to Leiden in 1715. As an editor he confined himself to the Latin classics such as Phaedrus Horace Claudian Ovid and Lucan. 'His numerous editorial and critical works spread his fame as a scholar throughout Europe and engaged him in many of the stormy disputes which were then so common among men of letters. Burman was rather a compiler than a critic; his commentaries show immense learning and accuracy but are wanting in taste and judgment'. Such an edition generally offers a 'textus receptus' which is widely accepted accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of various specialists taken or excerpted from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Editions like these were useful but never broke new ground. This Variorum edition was produced by the Dutch classical scholar of German descent Bochardus Cnippingius 1623/24-1674. At the age of 23 or 24 he was appointed Rector of the Schola Latina at Culemborg. He gave up this position and moved to Leiden to teach classics at the local 'Schola Latina' later he became Conrector. 1937 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT BY OWEN RUTTER - THE ATLANTIC CROSSED BY STEAM
1937. An original manuscript entitled "The Atlantic Crossed by Steam" 5000 words dated 5-6 December 1937 written over 14 foolscap sized roughly 12 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches pages signed on the title page first page and last page by Owen Rutter Anglo-Malay Colonial Administrator and an orientalist of some repute. The steamship SS Great Western named for the Great Western Railway Company was the first steamship purposely built for the Atlantic crossing. It was an iron-strapped wooden side-wheel paddle steamer with auxiliary sails designed by the great railway engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel whose idea it was that steam would replace sail power on the regularly-scheduled trans-Atlantic "packet boat" services which had been operating under sail since 1818. He convinced the directors of the Great Western Railway. Though the Great Western's huge boilers took up almost half its interior the ship was designed to carry 148 passengers with a main passenger saloon 75 feet long by 34 feet at its widest. The Great Western displaced 2340 tons. Twenty-four first-class passengers paid 35 guineas each for the maiden trip more than many working class people then earned in a year. Adding to the value of the trip on its maiden run the Great Western raced the SS Sirius to New York though the Sirius had left Cork Ireland days earlier on April 4. The Great Western left Bristol England on April 8 1838. The rival British and American Steam Navigation Company expected to open the first steam-powered regularly-scheduled "packet" trans-Atlantic service with their SS British Queen. But with their ship still at the shipyard it became clear at the opening of the season that the Great Western which had already been launched and was being fitted out with its machinery in London was going to beat them to it. So they chartered the Sirius which was a cross-Channel steamship. Though the Sirius beat the Great Western to New York arriving on April 22 with forty passengers they had to burn the cabin furniture spare yards and one mast to do it inspiring the similar sequence in Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days 1872. The Great Western arrived the following day with 200 tons of coal still aboard and after only 15 days at sea. Great Western was subsequently awarded the Blue Riband for setting the record for trans-Atlantic travel speed at 8.66 knots beating Sirius which clocked in at 8.03 knots. The Great Western served in the trans-Atlantic run until 1846. Later after serving as a troopship in the Crimean War she was broken up in a salvage yard on the lower reaches of the Thames in 1856. Born in 1889 Rutter joined the North Borneo Company service in 1910 as a cadet. He was first attached to the West Coast Residency. Except for a few months in 1912 when he was the assistant district officer for Tawau Rutter spent most of his five years of service on the west coast of Sabah. He finally rose to the position of district officer in 1913 leaving the service in 1915 to return to Europe to serve with the British Army during World War I. Demobilised after the war with the rank of major Rutter returned to Sabah and spent 18 months as a planter and traveller. Upon returning to Britain he became an academician and writer. He died in 1944. Rutter was a prolific writer. His books dwelt on subjects of the East ranging from legends of Sabah to a biography of Sarawaks Rajah James Brooke. Two of his books British North Borneo: an Account of its History Resources and Native Tribes 1922 and The Pagans of North Borneo 1929 remained classic texts on Sabah for many years. British North Borneo was published in the same year as Evans Among Primitive People but was better received in North Borneo Company circles for its uncontroversial contents. It served as the standard reference on Sabah until the publication of K.G. Tregonnings A History of Modern Sabah 1963. The Pagans of North Borneo provides systematic insights into the lives of the various non-Muslim tribes in Sabah not confined to only the people of Tuaran and Tempassuk as in the case of Evans book. Rutter carried out extensive research for The Pagans of North Borneo drawing on materials and information from other North Borneo Company officials notably F.W. Fraser the long serving government secretary who had spent some years in Tambunan and Keningau and Woolley. Even though there are now some gaps in Rutters presentation on the non-Muslim indigenous people it is still regarded as a major contribution to the study of ethnography in Sabah. One of the 19th century most influential theatrical managers was also one of its wealthiest a pioneering popular comic actor who debuted in Philadelphia in 1840 toured the country and was noted for the Yankee characters and other eccentrics he perfected. Superb signature and inscription on the verso of his printed "John E. Owens" calling card heavy stock 3½" X 1 3/4". Near fine. Faintly age toned. Handsomely and boldly penned in his fine tight script the actor writes: "Aigburth Vale / Baltimore County / M-d. / Edward B Cook Esq / Better late / than never Yours truly / John E. / Owens. / June 30 '73." Aigburth Vale was Owens' famed country home designed by architects Niermsee and Neilson in 1868 and "Better Late Than Never" was one of Owens' popular comedies. Very Rare. No copies at auction in 30 years. Unitarians can trace their roots back to the 16th Century. The belief spread from Poland to what was then Transylvania Romania through England and on to America where it especially thrived in New England. Michael Servetus seems to be considered the founder of the movement. Servetus a Roman Catholic Spanish physician escaped from the inquisition in France and went to Geneva. Here in 1553 he was burned alive after a three-month trial into his anti-Trinitarian beliefs. "Servetus discovered that in the uncorrupted Greek New Testament there was no text to justify the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. He published two books arguing that Christians should bring their views of God and Jesus into conformity with Jewish and Muslim monotheism. Hence the word "Unitarian" -- God as unity or one" - Canadian Unitarian Council Website. These beliefs sometimes known as Sabellianism were to become known as Socianism after Italian born Faustus Socinus. He developed anti-Trinitarian belief into a more organised teaching. At this time he was living in Poland and his followers were sometimes called the Minor Reformed Church. Forced out of Poland again by persecution many merged with the Unitarians in Transylvania and from there the belief spread to England. Thomas Jefferson Benjamin Franklin and John Adams leaders of the American Revolution were all Unitarians. Interestingly this book also contains one of the earliest appearances of the word Holocaust lending to the interesting debate surrounding its etymology. 1943 - 1944 FASCINATING ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN CAPTAIN'S LOG OF ONE OF THE MOST DECORATED SHIPS OF WORLD WAR II THE U.S.S CALIENTE AS SHE PARTICIPATES IN SOME OF THE MOST DANGEROUS REFUELING MISSIONS OF THE PACIFIC THEATER
Pacific Theatre WW2 Eniwetok Pearl Harbor. Good. 1944. On offer is a unique firsthand document of the 2nd World War from the Engineering Department of the USS Caliente AO-53. The USS Caliente a Cimarron-class fleet oiler in the U.S. Navy was one of the most highly decorated ships in the WW2 for carrying fuel into battle areas. In early 1944 the ship took part in refueling missions in support of the Marshall Islands invasion refueling carriers such as the Yorktown Saratoga and Enterprise as well as the battleships Mississippi and South Dakota. In June and July of 1944 the ship supported the invasion of Saipan taking part in Operation Forager refueling carriers involved in that campaign. The Captain's Log contains the daily details of the ship's position and actions from December 10 1943 to August 11 1944 a time that the ship would be awarded 5 battle stars for its bravery. The book follows the ship as it sails throughout the Pacific to support and refuel numerous Navy vessels. "When specific orders are included in this book please read them carefully make sure you thoroughly understand them before attempting to carry them out." At the end of each message is written "Do not hesitate to call me at any time. Respectfully P.Barry." P. Barry is most likely the chief engineer or his second and is writing all the orders and observations of the night crew. Every day contains the numerous signatures of fellow shipmates who have read the message. Entries consist primarily of documentation of problems and potential problems with the engines as well as routine maintenance and other operations expected of the crew. With admonitions for the crew to be ready to wear life vests etc. Barry gives his expectations of the crew in a rather no nonsense manner while keeping a level-head about the potential deathly and seriousness of their mission/operation. Some pages even contain the details as to who exactly was on watch and on standby at exact times. There is a very funny idiosyncrasy in mid-April 1944: In this entry P. Barry signs off 'sincerely' instead of 'respectfully' and it appears another crew member notes this inconsistency with a penciled question mark next to the word. P. Barry's notes are always written in the same blue ink while the night crew's initials and occasional notes are written in pencil. Thankfully throughout the book both the ink and the pencil writing are fantastically well preserved. No smudging or difficulty reading the writing throughout the whole book. Some specifics to their mission are hinted at with locations such as Panama transiting the Canal around Dec. 21st Pearl Harbor Seeadler Harbor Majuro Eniwetok and the Marianas Islands mentioned as well as the names of tankers Cimarron Platte and Kinnebago. There is an olive green cloth cover with writing in red on the front cover. References to steaming in convoy are throughout with instructions to be prepared for varying speeds etc. alluding to the complexities encountered behind the scenes of large naval operations. 70 page or so of the book have writing in them as log entries. That leaves about half the book blank. This book is an incredible look into the daily operations of a decorated ship in WW2. Examples of log entries: "15 April 1944: Please note that this is the fifteenth of April & that we have skipped the fourteenth. All logs should indicate this fact & be dated 15 April. At 2000 tonight start purifying the lube oil commencing with the port side & running 24 hours on each system. Pay particular attention to maintaining constant oil temperature at the heater discharge. Do not neglect to have the messenger sweep down the operating platform at least once a watch before the watch is relieved. Wipe off the top of the reduction gear casings as necessary. Do not hesitate to call me at any time. Respectfully P. Barry."; "15 June 1944: Steaming Westward in convoy in the immediate vacinity of enemy held territory. Stand on alert watch & be sure personnel in machine shop evaporator flat & generator flat are promptly notified in the event of a G.Q. Also make sure the bridge talker notifies you of G.Q. since there is some chance that the engine room alarm is out of order. Each of the funeral orations features a title vignette with the arms of the deceased and a second as a title headpiece with a medallion portrait as well as a tailpiece. The dates of the orations range between 1695 and 1714. The two letters from Cardinal de Noailles that conclude the collection date respectively from 1712 and 1714.  Contemporary full brown speckled and glazed sheep binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Havana morocco title label. Roulette on the leading edges. Rubbing to headcaps and joints. Scuffing and brown stains on the upper part of the front board. 2 dampstains on the Duke of Berry's oration at top and bottom of page on the first 4 leaves. Good and solid binding. Gift inscription ""Guillaume Ranneville 1714"" in pen on the endpaper. The two letters from Cardinal de Noailles concern firstly a defense against his detractors and secondly a justification of his position on the Constitution Unigenitus which divided the French clergy; in this letter the cardinal reiterates his condemnation of the Port-Royal Bible.  Chez la veuve de Simon Bernard hardcover
