Large thick folio title page dedication page preface two pages author's tributes ten pages then ii 1734 but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination illustrated with over 2100 woodcut figures lacking the extra engraved title page the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier a little rubbed a little worn at the edges scuffed on the upper cover rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. Blanche Henrey 286. Very heavy - extra postage will be required. John Parkinson 1567 - 1650 was both the last of the great English herbalists and one of the first of the great English botanists. He was apothecary to James I and a founding member of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in December 1617 and was later Royal Botanist to Charles I. The Theatrum was the most complete and beautifully presented English treatise on plants of its time. One of the most eminent gardeners of his day he kept a botanical garden at Long Acre in Covent Garden today close to Trafalgar Square and maintained close relations with other important English and Continental botanists herbalists and plantsmen. . Tallahassee FL: Florida State University 1994. Rare original Florida State University "Honorary Degree Ceremony For Rosa L. Parks" program where she received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on November 21 1994. Octavo four pages with a black and white photograph of Parks on the verso of the front panel. Boldly signed by Rosa Parks in green beneath her photograph. Additionally signed or inscribed on the itinerary page by six members of the staff of Florida State University including president Talbot D'Alemberte Florida board of regents Mr. Steven J. Uhlfelder and student body president Mr. Ryan J. Orner. In near fine condition with rubbing. On December 1 1955 in Montgomery Alabama Rosa Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake's order to vacate a row of four seats in the "colored" section in favor of a White passenger once the "White" section was filled. Parks was not the first person to resist bus segregation but the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NAACP believed that she was the best candidate for seeing through a court challenge after her arrest for civil disobedience in violating Alabama segregation laws and she helped inspire the Black community to boycott the Montgomery buses for over a year. The case became bogged down in the state courts but the federal Montgomery bus lawsuit Browder v. Gayle resulted in a November 1956 decision that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Florida State University unknown

This American novelist and popular historian is best remembered for "Country Lawyer" 1939 a memoir of his attorney father's practice in rural New York and its sequel "The Big Family" 1941. Two Typed Letters Signed 7¼" X 10½" and 8½" X 11" Bridgeport CT 1948 January 30 and 1948 March 24. Addressed to Mrs. Madlener -- Elaine Madlener noted Chicago collector and office of The Manuscript Society. First letter is very good with mild age toning and small paper clip impression; second letter is slightly less with minor wrinkles and paper clip stain. Good content to this admirer who wanted some books signed. "I always feel highly complimented when readers want their books autographed" he remarks in the first letter "especially if the request comes after reading." Nice discussion of his current project: "I am in the throes of finishing a novel of old New York. It is the story of the Fabulous Forties when the Croton Aqueduct was being built. I have been reading the newspapers of the day through the microfilm until my eyes are quite ready for a vacation. Papers of that particular period were printed on stock which has become so brittle that they break all to pieces when handled and the microfilm has really saved them from extinction. The Aqueduct was under construction for ten years and I have been fortunate enough to get hold of diaries kept by an old fellow who was curator of a museum there during the time and who was also an enthusiastic member of the Aqueduct family -- which was fought tooth and nail by the well water enthusiasts." In the second letter he editorializes about. well editors: ".I had my editor here and we were polishing off the new copy. My work is pretty messy when it is first finished and it is full of erasures and interlineations. If the editor wants any changes and there was never an editor who didn't want some little change made I like to have it done before the final copy is typed. The printers are very bossy nowadays and they demand the most perfect copy. Then if there is to be serial consideration there has to be a copy for the magazines and another for the moving pictures." This is a fine copy nicely bound in 2010 by Heritage Bindery in bright Soviet Red leather.
