Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait engraved on copper by Nanteuil and a large title vignette. Late 19th-century half tawny sheep binding with corners. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Small tear at headcap extending 1cm. A very fresh copy. These historical memoirs cover essentially the end of the 16th century and the beginning of Henri IV's reign along with various later events notably disputes between the queen and young Louis XIII. They contain besides the narrative of events various documents including numerous letters. Pierre Jeannin was initially a lawyer and student of the great jurist Cujas becoming president of the parliament of Burgundy in 1580 then advisor to the Duke of Mayenne. His involvement in League affairs did not prevent him from becoming councillor of state and member of the finance council 1598. He negotiated the Treaty of Lyon with Savoy 1601 and became Henri IV's extraordinary ambassador to the revolted Netherlands in 1607. Upon the king's death Marie de Medici appointed him superintendent general of finances. Only 13 memoirs are included in this collection. Contemporary half brown marbled sheep binding. Smooth spine with fillets. Red morocco title label. Traces of rubbing. Work of the pastor and polemicist Pierre Jurieu 1637-1713 the Mémoires constitute a violent critique of Louis XIV's government. One finds therein all the abuses denounced both of absolutism and of the Church's power. The author deplores the disintegration of the nobility and advocates for the sovereignty of peoples and the subordination of kings to the Estates General principles that would resurface during the French Revolution. Just like a poem this beautiful and passionate letter was written in a long column of text. Klossowski congratulates the choreographer on his autobiography Mort subite published the same year and is amazed that Béjart's literary tastes are so similar to his own. In the letter Pierre Klossowski highlights the affinities that link him to Béjart. He devotes a long passage to Mort subite Béjart's last book about his famous father the philosopher Gaston Berger: ""La miraculeuse Anwesenheit présence d'un tel père suscitée par un tel fils ! A vous lire je ressens cette célébration dans sa piété filiale toute de joyeuse certitude à la cadence goethéenne du Roi des Aulnes .” “The miraculous Anwesenheit presence of such a father sparked off by such a son! To read you I feel this celebration in his filial piety all of joyful certainty to the same rhythm as Goethe's The Erlking .” He brings up their shared passion for the poet Rainer Maria Rilke before mentioning an old collaborative project: ""Je n'oublie guère votre visite . ni votre idée d'un ballet autour d'un Baphomet invisible.” “I hardly forget your visit . nor your idea of a ballet based on Baphomet invisible.” Several years earlier the Baphomet had already been the object of an abandoned theatre project with the Biennale de Venise. Furthermore it is indeed a manifest interpretation of the meaning of the psalms and a dramatic staging of them Aretino seeking to demonstrate his main thesis of correspondence between divine mercy and the efficacy of penitence; he thus transforms diverse texts into a continuous unity by creating a narrator who speaks of David in the third person and who allows him not only to give commentary but to frame the first-person text of the psalms: it is a form of literary recreation.
