PAUL VON HINDENBURG et al
1896 - 1920 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPT POSTCARDS LETTERS PHOTOS AND EPHEMERA TO AND FROM ONE OF GERMANY'S PRE EMINENT FAMILIES AND THE MAN WHO SINGLEHANDEDLY GAVE HITLER THE REINS OF POWER AND THEREBY PUT GERMANY ON THE ROAD TO WORLD WAR II
Very Good. 1896. On offer is an amazing archive of 32 items of original personal and intimate correspondence and ephemera dated 1896 through 1920 to the family Hindenburg including writings by Hindenburg himself. Postcards letters personal messages photos sent by Paul von Hindenburg and assorted aristocrats of the time to Hindenburg his wife and children. Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg known universally as Paul von Hindenburg the man almost singularly responsible for WWII who as President of Germany placed Hitler in the position of ascension to Germany's head of state. This extraordinary archive whose manuscript items have for the most part postal marks and stamps are in many ways a testament to Hindenburg's monarchist leanings and an homage to the Kaiser and the rest of the royal German family making for a great deal of irony given the method of Hindenburg's fall from power and his aid to Hitler. BIO NOTES: Hindenburg enjoyed a long career in the Prussian Army retiring in 1911. He was recalled at the outbreak of World War I and first came to national attention at the age of 66 as the victor at Tannenberg in 1914. As Germany's Chief of the General Staff from 1916 he and his deputy Erich Ludendorff rose in the German public's esteem until Hindenburg came to eclipse the Kaiser himself. Hindenburg retired again in 1919 but returned to public life one more time in 1925 to be elected as the second President of Germany. Though 84 years old and in poor health Hindenburg was persuaded to run for re-election in 1932 as he was considered the only candidate who could defeat Adolf Hitler. Hindenburg was re-elected in a runoff but nonetheless played an important role in the Nazi Party's rise to power dissolving parliament twice in 1932 and eventually appointing Hitler as Chancellor in January 1933. In February he issued the Reichstag Fire Decree which suspended various civil liberties and in March he signed the Enabling Act in which parliament gave Hitler's administration legislative powers. Hindenburg died the following year after which Hitler declared the office of President vacant and as "Führer und Reichskanzler" made himself head of state. The famed zeppelin Hindenburg that was destroyed by fire in 1937 was named in his honor. Hiver approche. Robe de dîners de Doeuillet pl.63 La Gazette du Bon ton 1921 n°8
Paris: Lucien Vogel éditeur 1921. Fine. Lucien Vogel éditeur Paris 1921 18 x 24 cm une feuille Original color print printed on vergé paper signed in the plate. An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925 with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war the editor-in-chief having been called up for service. It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start this sumptuous publication was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society Françoise Tétart-Vittu La Gazette du bon ton in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016 and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot known as Cochin later used in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils heightened in colors some highlighted in gold or palladium. The story began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of the world involved in fashion he had already been part of the fashion magazine Femina decided with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff the sister of Jean creator of Babar to set up the Gazette du bon ton subtitled at the time: Art fashion frivolities. Georges Charensol noted the reasoning of the editor-in-chief: In 1910 he observed there was no really artistic fashion magazine nothing representative of the spirit of the time. My dream was therefore to make a luxury magazine with truly modern artists
I was assured of success because when it comes to fashion no country on earth can compete with France. Un grand éditeur dart. Lucien Vogel in Les Nouvelles littéraires no. 133 May 1925. The magazine was immediately successful not only in France but also in the United States and Latin America. At first Vogel put together a team of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt as well as eventually his friends from school and the School of Fine Arts like George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Charles Martin. Other talented people soon came flocking to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Chalres Martin Maggie Salcedo. These artist mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel sought them out later became emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. It was also they who worked on the advertising drawings for the Gazette. The plates put the spotlight on and celebrate dresses by seven designers of the age: Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provided exclusive models for each issue. Nonetheless some of the illustrations are not based on real models but simply on the illustrators conception of the fashion of the day. The Gazette du bon ton was an important step in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic demands with the physical whole it brought together for the first time the great talents of the artistic literary and fashion worlds; and imposed through this alchemy a completely new image of women: slender independent and daring which was shared by the new generation of designers including Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas and so on
Taken over in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast the Gazette du bon ton was an important influence on the new layout and aesthetics of that little dying paper that Nast had bought a few years earlier: Vogue. Lucien Vogel éditeur unknown

ROMAN COINS AND PUBLIC LIFE UNDER THE EMPIRE E. Togo Salmon Papers II
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 0.72 x 9.48 x 6.2 Inches; 216 pages; Roman coins often shed light on Roman public life and society through the legends, portraits, and images they bear. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves, minted for official purposes such as paying the army, when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one. The survival of Roman coins is variable, and so attempts to reconstruct the size and distribution of issues calls for skilled and experienced analysis. This collection of papers provides evidence for the kind of deductions that the historian may make from Roman coins as well as the illustrations of the pitfalls that await the unwary. Those interested in Roman history, amateur coin collectors, and professional numismatists will all find much here to widen their knowledge of the public context of Roman coins. Contributors: William E. Metcalf, P. Bruun, Barbara Levick, R. P. Duncan-Jones, Anthony Barrett, Duncan Fishwick, C. E. King, Andrew Burnett.

Paul-Albert LAURENS - (Jose Maria de HEREDIA)
"Le bain des nymphes"" - Lithographie originale sur Japon - L'Estampe Moderne ""The Bath of the Nymphs"" Original lithograph on Japan paper L'Estampe Moderne
Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1898. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Janvier 1898 32 x 22 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original lithograph executed by Paul Albert Laurens for L'Estampe Moderne series number 9 published in January 1898. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins wove paper mounted on Japan paper artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard inscribed with the artist's name title and a poem; blank tissue guard. Lithograph inspired by the poem Les trophées by José-Maria de Heredia reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work of art in its own right. Its ink absorption quality and affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on par with the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in the Art Nouveau style.
