The editio princeps of this text dates from 1516 printed by the Aldine Press in Venice but according to Brunet IV 454 although rare it was made from a poor manuscript and was executed carelessly which gives full importance to the edition we present. Publication date in colophon. Printer's device on verso of final leaf with the inscription Arion. Historiated initials. Contemporary full calf binding. Spine with raised bands restored at the end of the 19th century with fleurons and roulettes on the bands red morocco title label. Corners restored. On the upper board gilt: G. Harrosset. Numerous scratches on the boards. Some worming on the lower board. The bottom of the title page has been reinforced over 1cm. Minor damage of no consequence: A pale dampstain in lower margin another in upper margin on some leaves fading until page 48 resuming on the last 20 pages and the index. Worming between page 26 and 46 in the lower right corner. A second from page 349 to 413 in right margin at the very bottom. Pausanias was a geographer and writer of the 2nd century AD. His description of Greece constitutes a testimony of primary importance on Greece in the Roman period particularly for the 2nd century of the Christian era even though Pausanias often delights in mixing history and mythology. In the manner of a modern travel guide he gives as he follows his itinerary the detailed list of sites he visits and the legends relating to them. Numerous archaeological excavations have repeatedly confirmed the veracity of his information especially concerning historical sites and the works of art they contained. The Family Seat Was Elmley Castle Pershore Worcestershire. His Younger Brother Was Major General Henry Rodolph Davies. He Was Educated At Eton College. In October 1899 He Served As A Daag Responsible For Intelligence At Army Headquarters In South Africa And As Acting Commissioner Of Police For Johannesburg In 1900. In 1902 He Was Temporarily Employed In The Intelligence Department Until He Became Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General Daqmg At The War Office On 7 September 1902. Two Years Later He Was Appointed Assistant Director Of Military Operations In 1904 He Was Made General Officer Commanding Goc Of The 1St Guards Brigade. He Then Took Over As Brigadier General General Staff Bggs Of Aldershot Command. He Was Promoted To Major General In May 1913 And In October Of That Year Became Director Of Staff Duties At The War Office. In October 1914 Davies Was Appointed As Goc Of The 8Th Division. The Division Along With Its Goc Was Soon Sent To The Western Front. Towards The End Of July Davies Was Posted Away From The Fighting In France And Belgium To Take Over The Command Of Viii Corps Then Heavily Engaged In The Gallipoli Campaign. Davies Promoted To The Temporary Rank Of Lieutenant-General30 Took Over As Its Goc On 8 August . He Brought With Valuable Combat Experience And It Is Said " Over The Five Months Of His Tenure His Ideas And Energy Were The Catalyst For A Myriad Of Tactical And Systematic Improvements Which Greatly Improved The Fighting Efficiency Of His Force Allowing His Troops To Achieve Tactical Superiority Over The Enemy Facing Them". In The Aftermath Of The Evacuation Of British And Allied Forces From Gallipoli In January 1916 Davies Was Moved On To Being Goc Of Ix Corps. Davies Was In Command Only Until June When He Returned To The United Kingdom To Serve As Military Secretary At The War Office. He Held This Post Until After The End Of The War.His Rank Of Lieutenant General Became Substantive In January 1917. Later That Year Davies Was Appointed General Officer Commanding-In-Chief Goc-In-C Of Scottish Command In June 1919. After Being Promoted To The Rank Of Full General In July 1921And After Serving As Lieutenant Of The Tower Of London Which He Had Been Appointed To In June 192335 He Retired From The Army In April 1926. This is 162nd lithographic plate of the book. It shows soldier holding rifle with bayonet in his hand, and another soldiers who are attacking all together. Shipov was a Russian painter, a master of military portrait. Born in the province of Kostroma, Russia. Since 1875 was an auditor of Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1880 he entered the military service. Studied painting without leaving military service. In 1883 he graduated from the training in the Corps of Pages. Since 1904 - the Commander of the East Siberian strelets regiment. In 1909 he was transferred to Suites, since 1915 - Lieutenant-General. In 1904-1915 received numerous awards for his military honor and courage, among them Golden Arms. He painted portraits of soldiers, watching them in battles and having rest. He did pencil sketches and watercolor portraits. One of the main representatives of the Russian military portrait of the edge of the century.

The author 1843-1919 participated in the commercial and scientific expedition of Sosnovsky and Matoussovsky who traveled through Siberia Lake Baikal and Mongolia during the years 1874 and 1875. They were the first explorers to cross the entire Gobi Desert from Berkul to Lanjou and made a circuit between Beijing and Shanghai before returning first to Mongolia then again across the Gobi Desert to finally reach their native country. Presented and sold in Lowry-James' elegant signature matting treatment of a single Ivory Rag Mat with gilt French line decoration sized to 12 x 16 inches and suitable for framing. The fine hand-colored engravings and lithographs from Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants claim their honored place as highlights of Victorian botanical illustration. As the nineteenth century ushered in a profound era of plant hunting and gathering worldwide newly discovered botanical specimens were brought to Europe for cultivation. Sir Joseph Paxton 1801- 1865 endeavored to include these fine discoveries as part of his floricultural monthly; The Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants which also featured the favored British cultivars. Joseph Paxton was at one time superintendent of the gardens at Chatsworth House owned by the Sixth Duke of Devonshire. In addition to horticulture Sir Paxton's talents extended to Victorian garden design and architecture which was evidenced by the creation of the Crystal Palace for the Exposition of 1851. An immense iron and glass structure the Crystal Palace was the unparalleled showcase of Victorian innovation and design the inspiration for which was Paxton's own Lily House at Chatsworth where he displayed his prized Water Lilies. MERRIMACK MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1923. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript 1923 diary of Pearl F. Adams of Merrimack Massachusetts who diligently records the events in her life as a homemaker and substitute school teacher. Her husband 'G.O.' children Norman Edwin and William her folks and the endless visitors to listen to the radio all figure large in Pearl's life. She used the train to Boston and home sometimes a 'jitney' she is often going to shows movies in Boston. She writes of trip to Maine to pick berries and trip to Moosehead Lake and Montreal and other parts of Quebec then Fort Ticonderoga in summer. Trips to Gloucester and Salisbury beaches also Salem Willows and Canobie Lake. Big Christmas party Dec. 21st. Pearl's birthday is Dec. 24th and she spent it baking pies and a pudding getting ready for Christmas. For Christmas they burned the candles to the socket and stayed up to after 12 o'clock. Entries for all of 1923 and up to Feb. 9th 1924. This is a charming detailed look at life post World War I era. I ANNETTE VALLON - WILLIAM WORDSWORTH'S MISTRESS AND THE MOTHER OF HIS ILLEGITIMATE DAUGHTER
Santa Fe New Mexico. Very Good. On offer is an original typewritten unpublished manuscript titled "I Annette Vallon" by Pearle LeCompte. The work in novel form is a fictionalized biography of the woman who was the lover of William Wordsworth the great Romantic Poet. She also bore his illegitimate daughter. Research suggests the work was created in the 1930 or 1940s has an introduction of 13 pages and 449 pages numbered in pencil. The title page states 135000 words. The author was very involved in the literary arts and theatre and in the education thereof. In 1931 her book 'Dramatics' was published. Upon retiring and moving to Santa Fe she researched the supremely interesting ongoing relationship between Wordsworth and Annette Vallon who bore him a child and raised it. Oddly Wordsworth though considered the greatest romantic poet of his time was not the greatest romancer in his life and it is this relationship that seems to have broken the mould in that respect. Testament to this may be the fact that much of the evidence and history was destroyed or buried by families and authorities according to the extensive explanation in the forward. This biographical novel is La Compte's attempt to vindicate Annette's life. Research finds that Ms. Le Compte is honored by Pearle Le Compte Theatre Scholarship for Western Illinois University. Pasted to the inside cover is the bookplate of Louis Agassiz Shaw co-inventor along with Philip Drinker of the iron lung in 1928. 394 lightly tanned pages followed by several pages of publisher advertisements. Some rubbing wear to maroon cover. We noted some red pencil marks to equations on page 175. Some mild foxing to endpapers. A poor quality rubber cement repair has been made to inside cover and title page so residue is visible on the seams of those pages and title page does not open flat. Shaw bookplate has caused a darkened area the shape of the bookplate paste residue on bookplate. Small green stamp on fep penciled price penciled price on page v. Rubber cement residue on inside seem of back cover. Small blemish on back cover. Contemporary panelled calf joints rubbed worn through at the corners lacking a few small portions around the spine.
