The Planter's Guide Or A Practical Essay on the Best Method of Giving Immediate Effect to Wood by the Removal of Large Trees and Underwood; Being an Attempt to Place the Art and that of Geneneral Arboriculture on Fixed and Phytological Principles
Edinburgh and London: John Murray 1828. Second edition greatly improved and enlarged. Illustrated with six engraved plates octavo pp xxxviii 527 sadly the plates are heavily foxed which has also affected the neighbouring page howver the remainder of the text is remarkably clean and very tight and sound; bound in a contemporary half calf rubbed rebacked sympathetically with a new calf spine. lightly tipped-in at the first page is a small advertisement leaf warning of 'sundry ignorant and uneducated persons' attempting to pass themselves off as having been trained by Henry Steuart - this seems to be scarce. Steuart 1759 - 1836 was a Scottish landowner agricultural improver soldier and classical scholar. Owing to bad health Steuart abandoned most of his literary work and experiments in arboriculture became the chief interest of his life. In September 1823 a deputation from the Highland and Agricultural Society which included Sir Walter Scott and Lords Belhaven and Corehouse visited Allanton and reported on the improvements effected there by Steuart's system of transplanting large trees. Though he had had to contend with an unfavourable soil and an exposed position he attained at no extraordinary expense the power so long desired of anticipating the slow progress of vegetation and accomplishing within two or three seasons those desirable changes in the face of nature which he who plants in early youth can in ordinary cases only hope to witness in advanced life. From this time Steuart frequently corresponded with Sir Walter who imitated several of Steuart's experiments at Abbotsford. When in 1828 Steuart published this work Scott reviewed it enthusiastically in the Quarterly March. When Scott visited Allanton in January 1829 in company with Lockhart he noted in his journal: Sir Henry is a sad coxcomb and lifted beyond the solid earth by the effect of his book's success. But the book well deserves it. The book was also favourably reviewed by Southwood Smith in the Westminster Review by Professor Wilson Christopher North in Blackwood's Magazine April 1828 and in the Edinburgh Review March 1829. It had a large circulation in America. In his preface to the second edition Steuart claims to have made the first attempt to apply the principles of physiology to practical arboriculture and to have created the new science of phytology. The frontispiece The Israelites going out of Egypt is from a watercolor by Stevenson done at the same time. This copy is inscribed by A. Edward Newton to Mr. Geo. B. Per Wikipedia "Stevenson Played A Role In An Astounding Number Of The Key Moments In Postwar Vanguard Culture But He Is Without Question Best Known For The New Adam 1962 An Audacious Painting Of A Nude Young Man Measuring 8 Feet Tall And Nearly 40 Feet Long That Was Meant To Stretch Across Three Walls. The Critic And Curator Lawrence Alloway Had Seen A Preparatory Work For The New Adam And He Planned To Put The Final Product In His 1963 Exhibition "Six Painters And The Object" At Guggenheim Alongside Works By Fast-Rising Pop Artists Like Roy Lichtenstein Jim Dine And Warhol But He Balked When He Was Presented With Photographs Of The Painting. Writing To Stevenson'S Paris Dealer Iris Clert Alloway Said That He Had Chosen Not To Show The Sprawling Painting "So As Not To Cause An Imbalance In The Exhibition" Explaining That "The Whole Weight Of Public Attention Would Be Drawn Towards The New Adam." Emphasizing That His Decision Should Not Be Taken As An Insult He Said "I Suppose It Is A Tribute To The Painting That I Feel I Cannot Show It." A Robert Rauschenberg Work Took The Place Of The New Adam. Stevenson Later Said That Alloway "Went Into Shock" When He Saw The Nude For Which The Actor Sal Mineo Of Rebel Without A Cause Fame Had Served As A Model. "I Had Never Heard Of Him But He Was Very Good Looking And Beautifully Proportioned" The Artist Said Of Mineo. The New York Dealer Mitchell Algus Recalled Stevenson Saying That The Figure'S Head Which Is Partially Covered By His Arm Belongs To The Artist'S Then-Partner Timothy Willoughby A Member Of The Astor Family Who Was Lost At Sea In 1963. When Algus Went Looking For The New Adam Around 1990 He Found The Painting Rolled Up In The Basement Of A Long Island City Townhouse Where Stevenson Lived With His Longtime Partner Lloyd Tugwell Who Died In 2005. Algus Inaugurated His Gallery With A Display Of The New Adam And Went On To Do Five More Solo Shows Of Stevenson'S Paintings-Predominantly Intense Close-Ups Of The Male Body Often In Soft Tones That Exuded An Intimate But Fantastical Eroticism. He Noted That When Stevenson Was Showing His Work In The 1960S And '70S With Dealers Like Clert And Richard L. Feigen Reviews Of His Shows Were Frequently Negative And Marked By Homophobia. "This Art Is The Expression Of A Pervading Painful And Limp Ennui But So Skillful That It Is Not Quite A Cliché" One Artnews Item From 1963 Reads. But Times And Opinion Changed. In 2005 The Guggenheim Museum Acquired The New Adam Under The Aegis Of Curator Robert Rosenblum Who Told The New York Times "It'S A Seminal Work.
