A delightful card in which the poëte ordinaire refers to the making of his portrait by his friend the painter Whistler: ""j'ai honte d'avoir fui dans ma verdure au moment même où Whistler parlait de mon portrait à faire"". ""On June 1st as he had promised Whistler who in his last letter with an affection verging on tenderness addressed him as mon Mallarmé he went to the painters studio on the rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs. You will see someone from the woods somewhere between the wild boar and the nightingale he had warned playfully in announcing his visit. Painter and poet ended the day dining on the rue du Bac where the all-too-ephemeral Trixie was now absent. In the half-light after dinner Whistler near a lamp seemed to resurrect in appearance the extraordinary Poe. Doubtless he then repeated to Mallarmé his intention of painting him. The next day without waiting for the Monet exhibition soon to be held at Georges Petit the Mallarmés went on to Valvins. A rare copy of the only first edition of Mallarmé published in the U.S. - bringing together chronicles from his great magazine of wit and opinion The Latest Fashion every page of which he wrote himself under various pseudonyms of both genders. Mallarmé wrote about the latest women's fashions and sang the praises of the great couturiers of the time notably Emile Pingat and Charles-Frédéric Worth ""organizer of the sublime and daily celebration of Paris"". For four months in 1874 Mallarmé tried his hand at fashion writing initially out of financial necessity: ""Myself I have after a few articles hawked about here and there tried to write completely on my own including advice on outfits jewelry furniture even theater reviews and dinner menus a journal entitled La Dernière mode the eight or ten numbers of which still serve when I blow the dust off them to make me dream at length"" Selected letters of Stéphane Mallarmé tr. Rosemary Lloyd. At the same time as he was developing his poetic art he theorized in the pages of this short-lived magazine on women's finery and gave advice on vacation destinations furnishings and entertainment. Mallarmé was at once the director editor and publicist of his own magazine which also contained a healthy dose of literature and poetry: ""which each issue offered a sample: the prose or verse of Coppée Valade Hervilly des Essarts Mendès Cladel"" Émilie Noulet Mallarmé. Vingt poèmes in addition to his own magnificent prose: ""All the rest is poetry. All the rest is perfect. All the rest is of a natural originality that nothing else approaches. Not a paragraph not a sentence that does not seem to be an excerpt from some rare prose poem"" ibid. The Institute of French Studies in New York was the first to publish these Mallarmé chronicles in book form: ""It is astonishing and to say the least dismaying to realize that it took a century in France - exactly one hundred and four years - to publish an edition of this work by Mallarmé Jean Pierre Lecercle Mallarmé et la mode 1989. Autograph inscription by Stéphane Mallarmé to his friend François Nys : ""A monsieur Nys très sympathiquement."" This copy enriched in forntispiece with a portrait woddcut in red of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam by Marcellin Desboutin which he inscribed for François Nys. This portrait present in the second edition of 1892 is not present in every copy of the tirage de tête. Two very clear dampstains not serious in the margins of the first and final free endpapers two small marginal dampstains to the covers. A good and rare copy. Cette étude est issue d'une série de conférences que Mallarmé donna en Belgique et en France à la mort de celui qui fut l'""une des grandes amitiés de sa vie"". Bertrand Marchal dans son essai sur Mallarmé décrit cette conférence comme ""une des grandes oraisons funèbres de notre littérature ; elle est aussi avec le texte sur Rimbaud l'une de ces biographies paradoxales où Mallarmé récuse le sens ordinaire de ce que l'on nomme la vie ; elle est évidemment le témoignage d'une amitié parfaite entre l'auteur d'Hérodiade et celui d'Isis. Elle est tout cela mais elle n'est pas que cela. A travers l'évocation de la destinée exemplaire de Villiers dans ce discours porté par l'émotion la plus haute une méditation sur l'acte d'écrire et sur sa signification métaphysique historique et politique. 'Sait-on ce que c'est qu'écrire ' "". François Nys Anversois d'origine est l'imprimeur de la Société internationale des aquafortistes S.I.A. fondée en 1869 par Félicien Rops. Passé par de prestigieuses maisons parisiennes comme celle d'Auguste Delâtre puis Alfred Cadart il est choisi par Rops pour la grande qualité de ses tirages. Ensemble ils contribuent de manière magistrale au renouveau de l'eau-forte originale désormais libérée de l'héritage romantique et attirent à eux de nombreux graveurs de talent dont Félix Bracquemond Adrien de Witte ou Marcellin Desboutin qui dédicace ici son portrait de Villiers à Nys. Mais en dépit de l'étendue de l'uvre accomplie exposition rétrospective édition de 12 superbes portfolios les difficultés financières finissent par avoir raison de leur enthousiasme et Nys quitte la Belgique en 1877. De retour à Paris gagnant l'admiration des milieux symbolistes - dont celle de Mallarmé - il travaille toujours comme imprimeur mais aussi comme libraire chez A. Quantin. Les cinq exemplaires sur Japon ont tous été répertoriés le n°1 est dédicacé à Picard un autre appartenait à André Gide le présent exemplaire n°3 enrichi du portrait comporte l'envoi à François Nys le n°4 est sans envoi et le dernier est agrémenté d'une dédicace à Tausserat. Cette dédicace à Nys sur l'un des très rares Japon témoigne de la haute estime que porte à l'imprimerie l'auteur du premier poème typographique de la littérature française : Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira jamais le hasard. Title page yellowing Note: The Greek grammarian Stephanus Byzantinus who lived at Constantinople after the time of the Roman emperors Honorius and Arcadius end 4th century is the author of a well-known geographic lexicon called 'Ethnika' of which work we only possess an epitome kat' epitomên. The 'Ethnika' which is lost consisted of between 50 and 60 books and listed in alphabetical order place-names with the adjectives derived from them. It offered information on foundation legends etymologies historical anecdotes proverbs etc. The lexicon was epitomized ca. 530 A.D. by a certain Hermolaus who dedicated his abridgement to the emperor Justinian. Stephanus Byzantinus was originally interested not so much in geography or history but in grammar and etymology i.e. the correct formation of ethnic adjectives derived from the names of places islands regions and countries in the ancient world. Stephanus Byzantinus' sources were Herodianus Dionysius Periegetes Strabo Hecataeus Pausanias Polybius and many other now lost grammarians and historians. The value of this compilation lies in the preservation of material from works otherwise lost. The title of the 'Ethnika' has been a matter of dispute ever since the Aldine 'editio princeps' of 1502 where it is entitled 'Peri Poleôn'. The Florentine Iunta edition of 1521 went 'Peri Poleôn kai Dêmôn' or 'de Urbibus et Populis' with which title Berkelius also headed his text. p.1 Thomas de Pinedo a Spanish Jew 1614-1679 who was obliged to leave his native country and seek a refuge in Amsterdam from inquisitorial persecution was the first to add a Latin translation to an edition of 'De Urbibus' Amsterdam 1678. This edition of 1688 was edited by the Dutch scholar Abraham Berkelius in Dutch Van Berckel or Van Berkel together with his commentary and Latin translation. He adopted collations made by the French scholar Claudius Salmasius 1588-1653 from manuscripts of the 'Bibliotheca Palatina' during his stay at Heidelberg and notes and 'various readings' collected by the Dutch professor of Greek Jacobus Gronovius 1645-1716 from the 'Codex Perusinus'. Berkelius 1639/40-1686 studied Greek under Gronovius and was appointed Rector of the 'Schola Latina' at Delft. Stephanus Byzantinus was not new to Berkelius. He had published earlier at the same publisher Van Gaesbeek in 1674 an edition that contained fragments of Stephanus Byzantinus' 'Ethnika' the 'Genuina Stephani Byzantini de Urbibus et Populis fragmenta' a small work of 25 pages. The involvement in the edition of 1688 of his master Gronovius also does not come as a surprise for he published for Van Gaesbeek in 1681 a fragment of Stephanus Byzantinus on the Greek oracle at Dodona with 3 Latin translations and a commentary Collation: Part 1: a4 b-c2 d1; A-5D4 5E2; 6A2-6D2.
