‎New York: American News Company Publishers 1866. First edition of Peckham's biography of the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War. Octavo original cloth frontispiece. In good condition. Nathaniel Lyon was the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War. He is noted for his actions in Missouri in 1861 at the beginning of the conflict to forestall secret secessionist plans of the governor Claiborne Jackson. He had fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida and the Mexican–American War. After being assigned to Kansas where many residents were divided about slavery and the Union he developed strong pro-Union views. In February 1861 Lyon was made commander of the Union arsenal in St. Louis Missouri another divided state. Suspicious of governor Claiborne who was working with Jefferson Davis on a secret plan for secession Lyon forced the surrender of the pro-Confederate militia. ‎London: Grafton & Co. 1914. With the bookplate of the artist/painter/printer Edward DeWitt Taylor 1871-1962. His bookplate features a Columbian iron hand press sometimes referred to as the 'Eagle' press due to the characteristic bald eagle counterweight. "Edward DeWitt Taylor was born in Sacramento California and remained in California throughout most of his life. As a young man Dewitt Taylor settled in San Francisco where he would gain training as an artist. In the late 1800s he studied painting with Armin Hansen and Gottardo Piazzoni. He soon acquired a printing press for his studio and printed numerous original limited edition prints. With the success of his prints he established Taylor & Taylor Printers a printing business along with Henry Taylor in San Francisco California. For almost 60 years their firm became recognized for fine printing and they printed a number of editions for the Book Club of California. In 1911 John Henry Nash was asked to join the business and the printing partnership became Taylor Nash & Taylor. While working as a printer during the 1930s Taylor also worked for the Federal Art Project creating prints and artworks for the government. While Taylor is best known as an accomplished etcher he also worked as a painter designer and printmaker. He was known for his realistic landscapes and seascapes of the northern coast of California. ‎OGDEN UTAH UT. Good. 1950. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of the post World War II era of polio victims being the 1950 hardcover handwritten diary of an unidentified teenage girl from Ogden Utah who was stricken with Bulbar Polio in 1949 and had spent time in an Iron Lung for two weeks. A Dr. C. H. Jensen did a tracheotomy because she still couldn't breathe. A very full largish diary book contains an enormous store of narrative as she rarely misses a day and shares intimately with her diary: She writes everyday of her life circumstances of feeling ill/tired yet she manages to help her Mother with housework cooks bakes babysits and eventually goes back to school. She gets lots of penicillin shots and attended physical therapy. Recovering she becomes an accomplished horseback rider and has her own horse named "Sundance" sees lots of movies mentions her first time riding in a taxi of shaving her legs of her first date with a boy named David Hansen of going to the White City Ballroom.She has many brothers and sisters which she has listed all family members & their birthdays in the back of the diary.They are the Millers and they had a farm as she mentions having cows bulls rabbits etc.and riding on a tractor.and how they have to tend animals.Her brothers got hurt physically by getting cut on the farm fence of being kicked by horses breaking wrists falling on ice etc.The brothers do rodeos and were members of the Junior Posse.One brother Waldo "banged up front end of car".They all attended the "Eight Stake Dance Festival".Took a trip to Yellowstone National Park July 1-3 in 1950.Her brother Elias dressed as a girl on Halloween and she did his make-up.Her brothers Elias & Lynn took Cello lessons she wished she could take piano.Her Dad bought her cowgirl boots. They made popcorn balls for Christmas.She appears to have gone to a school named " Mound Fort " and speaks of Mound Fort beating other teams in Football.Of how the Yankees won the World Series on Oct 7th.She got a ride in a '49 Ford she likes Chevys better.Her mother attends the " Relief Society ".Her brother Ariel works at the Iron Works does taxes.Her parents go out alot and had attended a "Daughters' of Utah Pioneers" dance.She makes "divinity" & ice cream with her Dad pudding breads etc. and she can sew.Ariel had a telescope a viewmaster and she listens to her brother's radio.She made a list of what she had received on Christmas in 1949 and on Christmas of 1950.Her brother Rollo got drafted.Visited Weber Canyon.Went to Primary Festival at Lorin Farr Park. The Épinal imagery published several series of cut-out models including the ""Grandes Constructions"" in 39 x 49 cm format the ""Moyennes Constructions"" and the ""Petites Constructions"". From 1880 to 1908 constructions were published featuring architecture costumes boats and various vehicles. During this same period paper theatres or ""théâtre chez soi"" also enjoyed great success. This toy model developed and endured until the Second World War. Once sold by peddlers the images d'Épinal owe their name to Jean-Charles Pellerin who was the first printer to publish this type of image in series and who lived in the town of Épinal Vosges. The subjects are very varied but generally revolve around religion history French Revolution battles military uniforms or drawn from successful novels. Épinal imagery has its origins in imagery a popular art form born in the 15th century intended mainly for the illiterate rural public. Originally the image is engraved on a wooden plate and printing is carried out using a hand press. It is then coloured using stencils. In the 19th century lead castings are made from the engraved wood blocks: stereotypes which allow production to be increased. In 1820 lithography was adopted which induced a radical change in style with finer drawings. ‎When Joan Fontaine plays Rachmaninoff's 2nd Concerto in the 1950 film "September Affair" it's actually a recording of this American classical pianist you're hearing; he debuted while a G.I. in Carnegie Hall in 1943 and toured the country in the 1960s as part of a popular Grammy-winning trio along with cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and violinist Jascha Heifetz. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. 1984. Fine. Dramatic half-length portrait of a white-haired Pennario in tuxedo performing set against an entirely black background. At upper left in bright bold white he inscribes and signs it "To John A. Leiser -- / With the good wishes of / Leonard Pennario / 1984." Outstanding contrast. With large portion of the original mailing envelope addressed in Pennario's hand and bearing his hand-printed name and return address. Choicer than choice! unknown‎
