‎1881 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL DETAILING THE MUNICIPAL ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES OF AMERICA'S FIRST PLANNED INDUSTRIAL CITY AND MODEL FOR THE LATE 19th CENTURY VISION OF A MODERN URBAN METROPOLIS‎

‎HOLYOKE MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1881. On offer is a rare manuscript from late 19th century Massachusetts. This municipal record book details the matters pertaining to a vital municipal Board in America's first planned industrial city. Measuring 10.5 inches by 8 inches it contains 143 pages and is 100% complete. The cover binding and pages are in good condition. The handwriting is legible. There are also several pages of notes and correspondence tucked inside. Located on the Connecticut River Holyoke MA was one of the first planned industrial communities in the United States. The city features rectilinear street grids which was a novelty in New England. In 1847 merchant investors began construction of dam and canal system along the Connecticut River. With this construction came an elaborate complex of mills and worker's housing which evolved into the city of today. As an interesting side note volleyball was invented here and Holyoke is home to the Volleyball Hall of Fame. To say that water and water management were important matters to the citizens of Holyoke would be an understatement. Its very existence its jobs and its prosperity were totally reliant on it. This gives an inkling into the importance of its Board of Water Commissioners. Hence this original ledger of the Holyoke Board of Water Commissioners is a vital piece of municipal history. Holyoke was home to numerous paper mills giving rise to its longtime nickname as the "Paper City." Among the many water-powered paper companies and mills referenced here include the Albion Paper Co. Union Paper Mfg. Co. Parsons Paper Co. Hampden Glazed Paper Co. Newton Paper Co. Excelsior Paper Co. etc. In 1888 Holyoke's paper industry spurred the foundation of the American Pad & Paper Company which is still one of the largest suppliers of office products in the world. Timothy Merrick the Town Clerk maintained this journal. The journal's entries chronicle all matters pertaining to the city's busy water board. At the time the board was active in extensive affairs ranging from dealings with companies such as the Connecticut River Railroad and Holyoke's many paper mills to bodies of water throughout the city. "Voted and approved 19 bills including payroll for Frely amounting to $575.44" p. 3; "On motion voted to allow Jolly Brothers to make connection with the City pipe and to use water the work to be done at their own expense buy under the supervision of the Supt. of the Works" p. 7; "Voted that the Registrar notify George D. Robinson Atty for P. Dolan that a hearing on his claim for damages for diverting Tannery Brook be held over Dec 19th at 2:30 p.m." p. 22; "Voted to loan to V.J. O'Donnell $1800 of mortgage on house on Price St." p. 23; "Voted to rebate to Parsons Paper Co on July $56.48 on August $14.03. Also to G Burnett $20.00 on Nov." p 46. The names of numerous Holyoke residents businesses landmarks street addresses intersections etc. can be found throughout journal. Also many other Holyoke based companies from other industries can be found throughout the pages of this early volume such as the Jolly Brothers custom iron and steel forgings Daniel O'Connell Farr Alpaca textile mill Tuttle Rubber Co. Valley Pipe Co. Crafts & Fraser Store etc. Various local charitable and religious organizations are mentioned such as the Sisters of Charity at Mount Saint Vincent. This is a very important historical document as this Board was for practical purposes the most important government body in the city. Political scientists and historians would find this a treasure trove. It is a perfect view of local government in action. Its detailed recording of actions taken and events responded to provide a rich history of the city and a fascinating view of how it worked in the late 19th century. This translation is accompanied by the supplements of Jean Freinsheim philologist and historiographer to Queen Christina of Sweden to whom Du Ryer dedicates the work. The edition also includes Florus's complete Summaries at the head of each book. Arms of Louis XIII engraved on the title page text enhanced with engraved headpieces initials and tailpieces. Full calf binding spine with 6 raised bands later 18th-century red morocco title-label decorated with an eagle arms of the Sade family of the Mazan branch spine with author title and volume number gilt raised bands decorated with gilt fillet and compartments decorated with grotesques surrounded by double gilt fillet gilt fillet on the leading edges. Boards reinforced at the joints with reused parchment visible under the white paper endpapers probably a notarial deed. Handsome copy representative of the work of Parisian binders of the mid-17th century found in the great collections of the period. Fine condition small dampstains in upper margin not touching the text small hole with loss of a few letters on p.223 some rare scattered worming and browned leaves slight bookworm damage. Rare provenance from the library of the Sade family of the Mazan branch inherited by Donatien Alphonse de Sade the Divine Marquis. The book would have been acquired by Abbé Jacques François Paul Alfonce de Sade scholar and libertine probably kept at the château de Saumane during the abbé's lifetime and at his death was transferred to the Sade family collection at the château de Condé after 1814. It has not left the Sade collection since. Sources: Thibault de Sade direct descendant of the Marquis Manuscript note from the beginning of the second half of the 17th century on the upper pastedowns of each volume. Characteristic indication of public sales of great Parisian libraries in the 17th century with the price in livres tournois and the name of the dealer. ‎BLACKPOOL LANCASTER ENGLAND UK. Good. 1943. On offer are two 2 original manuscript World War II RCAF diaries handwritten by T.J.F. Cross of the RCAF 423 Squadron. These diaries are uncommon in a number of ways: T.J.F. Cross was both an Airman as well as a Flight Mechanic; his Squadron flew in coastal patrols of the British Channel in the famed Sunderland Flying Boats whose responsibilities were numerous: missions in search of crews in the water searching for U-Boat submarines or dropping bombs etc. etc. The son of Cross once stated: "Dad was an Airman not a Pilot. He flew shore patrol in the British Channel in Sunderlands Flying Boats….the son knew of a miraculous event he experienced when their Sunderland went down in the stormy Channel. They jettisoned their Load of depth Charges and then the Pilot was able to take-off from the turbulent Sea by riding the Plane along a wave until they were airborne. When they landed they found that the wings had been twisted by the force of the water such that they said that the Plane should not have been able to Fly!" That particular Mission is noted in the 1942 Diary on Wednesday September 23rd 1942." Here are snippets: 1942 RAF Blackpool Lanchester: January 7th: Worked on kite all day. "A" cracked up on take-off this morning. Couldn't get up flying speed so pilot retracted undercarriage and came down on belly. January 17th: "L" crashed in sea. Squadron Leader Keddy Canadian pilot lost. Only two men of crew of six of "L" picked up. February 25th: Paraded at 7:30am. Went to school in the afternoon. Learned stress and strain and draughting. April 16th: Started in third week of metal repairs today. Making patch repair on tubular Hurricane fuselage. August 4th: Jack and I were interviewed by C.O. about flight engineer. I'm trying to get flight rigger. September 5th: We launched "D" at 4:00pm. Johnny Wharton pilot Lofty Ryder rigger and myself stayed on board until 7:30pm. September 17th: Up at 0330 hrs. Took off at 0600 on air sea rescue. Four men from a Hudson that crashed about 300 miles out in the Atlantic. Looked for them for over six hours but couldn't find them. Landed at Oban again at 5:30pm. September 23rd: Rain. On board at 9-30. Took off at 11-25. Met convoy in North Atlantic. A little excitement over a box in sea. We forced landed on sea at 7-10. Two port engines quit. Rough sea and I was sick. Took off at 8:00pm. In Oban 9-30. "B" pretty badly battered. September 24th: Went to Dungallon at 1000 hrs. Investigation about "B". Went aboard and cleaned up in afternoon. Flight Commander inspected the damage. September 30th: Took my logbook to Dungallon. We're flying "B" to South Hampton. Took off at 1430. Flew down west coast. No guns in turrets. I done mid upper turret watch. Flap motor burned up. Landed at Pembroke Doch Wales. November 14th: Up at 0400 hrs. Off at 0605 hrs. We're on anti-sub patrol and looking for dingy. I done two watched in mid-upper and one in front. Mistook whale for sub bags of panic. Fired at whale. I fired U.G.O. in front turret. Landed at Pembroke Doch at 1655. November 16th: On board at 0900 hrs. Took off at 1040 hrs. We saw two subs and heavy cruiser they were all ours. November 21st: Cloudy. Went on board at 1000 hrs. Took off at 1110 hrs. We went after a life boat with about fourteen people in it. Contacted them o.k. We directed a destroyer to them and it picked them up at 2000 hrs. "D" attacked by Junkers 88. Came out o.k. November 23rd: On anti-submarine patrol 600 miles out in Atlantic and straight back. Didn't see a thing. November 27th: On anti-sub patrol but bad weather. So just straight out and back. Done three turret watches two in front and one in mid-upper. Fired U.G.O. at flame float. November 30th: On convoy escort. Took off at 0345 hrs. Sighted convoy o.k. 65 ships southbound. I sighted a water spout and thought it was a sub. I fired mid-upper guns at white caps. I cleared four stoppages. December 29th: Cold windy snow. Take off at 0445 hrs. We were out 2 hrs. approximately 300 miles. When starboard inner started to miss and backfire so we came back. Only out 4 hrs. 1943 Blackpool Lanchester: January 11th: Took off at 1350 on air test. We flew to Donegal Bay and dropped four depth charges. Very rough today. New 2nd pilot on board so ropey landing. One civilian drowned at "P" when barge turned over. January 13th: Up at 0400 hrs. Take off at 0600. On anti-sub sweep. "F" running swell. Saw barrage balloon about four hours out. Must be attached to some ship that was sunk. Done four hours in front turret. All kinds of weather today sun rain sleet and snow. We were 150 miles south of Iceland. January 27th: Called at 0600 hrs. Take off at 0745 hrs. Got airborne when port outer engine quit. Linkage of throttle control came off. Managed to get back alright but nearly crashed into island. February 27th: Reported to Flight Commander. I'm still flying with F/O Howell. March 3rd: Reported to work in rigger's shop. Went out to "F" and got my mae west and helmet. Turned all my flying kit into stores. Went out to "H" she's got a hole in her keel. Helped Corp. Norton and F/O Whitbeck put plastercine on hull. March 15th: Went to work at 1330 and worked on "F" all afternoon. 201 Squadron pranged a sub yesterday. March 19th: Our "E" pranged a sub today and a boat of 228 Sqdn. attacked one. March 20th: My old kite "F" attacked two subs today and our "H" sighted another. April 15th: Down to crew room at 0900 hrs. Went out and done d.i. on "J" and "G". "G" supposed to swing compass but didn't. Out to "J" at 1400 hrs. Take off at 1410 on local bombing. Dropped about 40 bombs. Hewitt of 201 Squadron committed suicide over Donegal Bay by jumping out of aircraft. May 6th: Took off at 1450. Weather clear. We're on anti-sub patrol around the Queen Mary. She was escorted by one cruiser one carrier and three destroyers. She was really moving going in a westerly direction at about 15 knots. July 22nd: Went to early tea because our "J" for Jesus shot up by Focke Wolf Condor over Bay of Biscay. Worked til 2130 getting her up slip. Tail gunner Sgt. Sullivan got slivers and shrapnel in his face and Second Pilot hurt in shoulder and leg. Kite has common shell holes in hull wings cockpit and float. Leaking pretty bad. I got piece of shell out of bilge. F/Lt. Musgrave Captain. They sure were lucky to get out alive. October 20th: Arrived in London 1330 hrs. Had dinner at Beaver Club and then went to Lou's. Air raid "alert" at 0100 hrs. tonight. "All clear" went 1:30am. Bombs dropped somewhere on London. November 12th: Our "D" crashed while landing in a flare path last night. One man trapped inside when she sank. Three drowned and one was F/O Hill. Another man died in hospital from skull fracture. Fl./Lt. Lee Skipper o.k. November 13th: "J" went down with engine trouble 2 hrs. from base just outside Donegal Bay. Kites from here on search but no signs of survivors. December 27th: 26000 ton German battleship "Scharnehorst" sunk off coast of Norway by our battleships. We've been after her a long while too." On offer is an absolutely sensational grouping of 100 letters both typed and handwritten all addressed to a singularly superb individual named George Neumann. Mr. Neumann earns these accolades not just from this reader but as can be read by 100% of the correspondents who have written him in this archive of incoming letters are for the most part letters of appreciation thank yous updates on the serviceman's duties and experiences and many express themselves to this father-like figure; their hopes and dreams about the war and after to this wonderful and kind spirited man. These letters all relate to George's home front support of those who went to serve their country in World War II. The Manager of the Lincoln Bank in Flatbush Brooklyn New York George took it upon himself to write and send gifts like the Readers Digest to soldiers who had some connection with the Bank former employees likely spouses of employees etc. So welcome were his letters and gifts so heartwarming the responses as Mr. Neumann personally wrote them and not simple notes but intimate letters of information like births and local news and heartfelt wishes. Historians and researchers of home front America will have no better look at this topic as well reflected by the words of thanks and the returned intimacies shared by those so appreciative of George's outreach. There are no medals for this part of the War effort but Mr. Neumann was sure deserving of accolades. ‎S.S. NORFOLK BALTIMORE MARYLAND. Good. 1935. On offer is a fascinating eclectic archive of original mostly manuscript correspondence and some ephemera relating to Franklin J. Schofield Deck Engineer aboard the S.S. City of Norfolk. The 120 or so letters date c1935 through to 1950 present a diverse group of papers to flesh out this man's life: husband sailor engineer union representative and much more. There are letters to and from his wife in Baltimore Maryland there are letters to them both in Baltimore there are many letters sent to Schofield while aboard ship with postmarks from Cuba England Scotland and many other locations. A fair bit of the correspondence relates to his union activities and the concerns of he and his fellow seaman making for a fascinating insight to the machinations of the seafaring unions: one letter from a fellow seaman references a sit down strike in Boston that Schofield helped organize and this seems to have come back to haunt him later in life. There are several typed letters from the Seaman's Union preparing for major unrest and strikes. A particularly fascinating piece of ephemera appears to be a handwritten resolution to negotiate with the powerful ship owners which Schofield wrote while he was aboard ship in Panama. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source: The ship was built by the British Admiralty at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Alameda California and completed as SS Independence for the War Shipping Board on November 16 1918. With the commencement of World War I the ship was acquired by the US Navy and commissioned the USS Independence on November 18 1918. After service in the War the ship was decommissioned on March 20 1919 and turned over to the United States Shipping Board for merchant service. In 1930 it was acquired by the Baltimore Mail Steamship Company rebuilt as a passenger liner renamed the SS City of Norfolk and sailed regularly to Europe. In 1940 it was then acquired by the US Navy again recommissioned the USS Neville and served in both the Asiatic-Pacific and the Europe-Africa-Middle East theaters during World War II. Decommissioned on April 30 1946 the ship was eventually towed to the James River National Defense Reserve Fleet in Lee Hall Virginia and ultimately sold for scrap on March 25 1957. Contemporary full brown calf marbled and glazed. Red morocco title label beige morocco volume label. Head of volume I torn away. Joints of volume I narrowly split at head and tail. Rubbing. Title pages browned as well as some pages. Good copy. The novel appeared in England in 1748 unsigned Smollet assumed authorship once success was achieved. This picaresque novel declared a model which it followed and transgressed that of Gil Blas by Lesage which according to Smollet lacks psychology and a tighter narrative linking events together. The work quickly achieved success and was finally translated into France in 1761 under Fielding's name who was at the height of his success in France; one should not be surprised for commercial reasons to find his name attached to the work especially since the translator did not know the true name of the author. This is one of the greatest English novels of the 18th century in which the hero in a picaresque and sometimes burlesque vein tries all conditions to achieve a condition that of gentleman: in turn sailor on all seas soldier in France fortune hunter the vicissitudes of existence dear to the English novel Robinson Crusoe Tom Jones allow the author a severe critique of the society of his time. In a skillful balance Smollet manages to transgress and blend all the literary genres of his era: travel narrative autobiography sentimental novel critique of morals satire of society denunciation of hypocrisy prostitution of bodies and minds etc. One could not finish detailing the richness of the book. Partly-printed DS 1p 7 ¼" X 10½" Indianapolis IN 1931 September 23. Very good. Updating form sent out by "Who's Who in America" on orange paper for their 1932-33 edition with Tobin's 2" X 1½" biographical entry from the previous edition tipped to the blank center area. Tobin approves the entry with a large bold signature at the close also adding his home address.
