Parker 1854-55. 2 vols. roy. 8vo. very handsomely bound in a splendid mid-nineteenth century armorial binding of full near-black calf sides with triple gilt frame border stopped at corners by gilt rosettes enclosing a triple frame border similarly stopped in blind the whole containing an elaborate armorial bearing blocked in gilt backs gilt with five raised bands all compartments tooled with multiple frame borders in gilt and blind first compartment tooled in gilt with the Tudor rose surmounted by a crown last compartment tooled in gilt with a figurative portcullis surmounted by similar crown leather labels gilt blind doublures marbled endpapers marbled edges an excellent example of a private armorial binding of the period. A lovely set of Archbishop Trench's two major works first published in 1846 and 1841 respectively both of which are keystones of Victorian theology. The lists of contents in both volumes have been skilfully and neatly annotated in a contemporary and scholarly hand probably that of the original owner to attribute to each miracle and parable the appropriate point in the clerical calendar. Tristan Bernard lavishes praise on Carlo Rim's talents as a radio serial writer: ""Wednesday 22nd. My old Carlo I read with great pleasure the sketches you sent me and I particularly appreciated the one you dedicated to me. You are one of the rare individuals who have perfectly understood 'the dramaturgy of radio'. You have managed in writing to give the listener the soul of a listener. This is a task that most dramatic authors do not understand who when they write for the theatre take the spectator for a reader. Try to come and see me soon with your dear Alice. I don't move around easily myself. We embrace you as well as the venerable Babou. Tristan Bernard."" During the Occupation Tristan Bernard took refuge in Cannes and resided at the Windsor Hotel while his friend Carlo Rim suggested in vain that he stay at his house so that he would be safe from denunciation or arrest; to which Tristan Bernard never short of witty remarks replied: ""At my age one no longer sleeps away from home!"" adding: ""Do you know that I appear in the Petit Larousse They don't arrest someone who appears in the Petit Larousse"" He was nonetheless arrested in September 1943 as a Jew and interned with his wife at Drancy then released following intervention by Sacha Guitry and Arletty the following month. A small pinhole at the head of the photograph showing all the affection that Carlo Rim had for his venerable friend Tristan Bernard having certainly hung this postcard in his home. The postcard shows Tristan Bernard facing forward with his handsome and imposing beard. On the verso he added: ""Le monsieur du verso c'est évident c'est sûr. c'est le plus beau vieillard de la Côte d'Azur. Je vous embrasse bien affectueusement chère Alice et cher Carlo. Tristan Bernard."" ""The gentleman on the back it's obvious it's certain. he's the most handsome old man on the Côte d'Azur. I embrace you both very affectionately dear Alice and dear Carlo. Tristan Bernard."" Handsome copy beautifully executed. Signed autograph inscription from Tristan Bernard to his friend Carlo Rim and his wife Alice. Provenance: from the library of the Provençal writer caricaturist and filmmaker Carlo Rim who was notably the friend of Fernandel Raimu and Marcel Pagnol but also of André Salmon and Max Jacob. During the Occupation Tristan Bernard took refuge in Cannes and resided at the Windsor hotel while his friend Carlo Rim offered in vain for him to stay at his house so that he would be safe from denunciation or arrest; to which Tristan Bernard never short of witticisms replied: ""At my age one no longer sleeps away from home!"" adding: ""Do you know that I appear in the Petit Larousse One doesn't arrest someone who appears in the Petit Larousse"" He was nevertheless arrested in September 1943 as a Jew and interned with his wife at Drancy then released through the intervention of Sacha Guitry and Arletty the following month. His grandson François-René was also arrested as a resistance fighter and deported to Mauthausen where he died. Calmann Lévy hardcover
