With two unsigned early 20th century fore-edge paintings the first of the Pont Louix XVI from Port Royal Paris; and the second showing Port Royal from the Pont Louis XVI. Very attractive. The first and most distinguished portion of Turner's History of England from the Earliest Times to the Death of Elizabeth originally published in four volumes 1799-1805. Turner was the first to write a history of England using original source material from Anglo-Saxon manuscripts and the first to make use of dictionaries catalogues and grammars that had been compiled earlier in the 18th century. "His work first occupied a great field. Frontispiece engraved by P. Sluyter probably depicting the Muse Clio a winged woman with a quill in her hand and a laurel wreath on her head; she is visited by several allegorical figures such as Father Time and a naked woman with a palm branch Victoria in her hand; in the background is Fama who blows her horn. Title printed in red and black. Woodcut printer's mark on the title depicting Fama hovering above a city the motto is: 'Pax artium altrix' Condition: Vellum somewhat soiled ans spotted. Small inkstain on the front board. All four ties gone Note: Not much is known about the Italian Jesuit scholar Orazio Torsellini or Orazio Torsellino latinized as Horatius Tursellinus 1545-1599. Tursellinus taught at several Jesuit Colleges in Italy and lectured for 20 year at the 'Collegium Romanum' in Rome. His most important works are De particulis latinae orationis a biography of the Jesuit missionary Franciscus Xaverius published in 1596 and a universal history Epitome Historiarum libri X which treated in 10 books the complete history from Adam till 1598 and which remained popular for centuries on schools and universities. For a long time it was used even at the protestant universities in the Dutch Republic. 100 or more editions and adaptations were produced until 1845. Right from the start it was a success and became a standard. The book was reissued in Italy in Rome Venice Milan and Perugia in France in Douai Lyon Paris Rouen Caen Toulouse and in Germany in Cologne München and Frankfurt generally cities where Jesuits had their colleges. The first edition in the Low Countries appeared in The Hague in 1678 and was edited by Johann Conrad Nuber who introduced this manual at the University of Leiden. In 1688 and in 1695 it was reissued in Franeker followed by editions produced by the Utrecht printer W. vande Water in 1710 1718 1730 and 1744. In 1708 a Dutch translation was published in Amsterdam. The manual was published for the last time in The Low Countries in 1786. The continuatio till 1624 incorporated in this edition of 1718 was produced by the French historian Henri de Sponde Henricus Spondanus and adopted from his Annales Baronii. This work first published in Rome as De particulis latinae orationis and brought Tursellinus fame among classical scholars. Mixed state with the copyright notice dated 1883; "Him and Another Man" corrected to page 87; p. 57 "was" corrected to "saw"; with the signature mark lacking on p. 161; p. 155 with the final 5 broken. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Bookplate to the pastedown. A near perfect example. Twain initially conceived of the work as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that would follow Huckleberry Finn through adulthood. Beginning with a few pages he had removed from the earlier novel Twain began work on a manuscript he originally titled Huckleberry Finn's Autobiography. Twain worked on the manuscript off and on for the next several years ultimately abandoning his original plan of following Huck's development into adulthood. He appeared to have lost interest in the manuscript while it was in progress and set it aside for several years. After making a trip down the Hudson River Twain returned to his work on the novel. Upon completion the novel's title closely paralleled its predecessor's: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Tom Sawyer's Comrade. Twain composed the story in pen on notepaper between 1876 and 1883. Paul Needham stated "What you see is Clemens' attempt to move away from pure literary writing to dialect writing." For example Twain revised the opening line of Huck Finn three times. He initially wrote "You will not know about me" which he changed to "You do not know about me" before settling on the final version "You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'; but that ain't no matter." The revisions also show how Twain reworked his material to strengthen the characters of Huck and Jim as well as his sensitivity to the then-current debate over literacy and voting. This example exhibits the following issue points: title leaf is conjugate. Copyright notice dated 1884; the illustration captioned "Him and another Man" p.13 listed as p.88 first state; 11th line from bottom of p.57 reads ".with the was." first state; p. 283 is an integral leaf with the corrected engraving; the final 5 in the numeration of page 155 is larger than the first and slightly below the others; leaf 23-8 is present as a blank; first state of the frontispiece portrait imprint of Heliotype with tablecloth visible. In near fine condition with light toning to the extremities. A very bright example. Rare gelatin silver printed photograph of Mark Twain by A. F. Bradley. Signed by Twain on the mount with Bradley's imprint dated 1907. A contemporary of Twain American poet Ina Coolbirth was a prominent figure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary community. In 1906 her home in California was destroyed in a fire and subsequent earthquake. Twain sent her three autographed photographs of himself which sold for $10.00 each and was subsequently convinced by New York photographer A. F. Bradley to sit for 17 more studio photographs to add further to the fund. Framed. The entire piece measures 11.5 inches by 15 inches. In near fine condition. "To understand America read Mark Twain. This book has been professionally rebound probably in the 1930s in blue cloth or buckram with yellow titles and gray endpapers. Ex-library with typical treatments to accession and deaccession. Sunned bumped and worn spine has blue cloth Dewey label. Corners are lightly bumped and lightly worn. The pages are fragile and brittle. The top corners of pages 55-62 and 245 are chipped with some loss of text. Pages 67 89 91 95-100 205 and 287-290 are chipped at top corner pages 235 and 332 are chipped on page edge; the top corner of pages 114 and 175 are detached and laid in and the corner of page 175 has a small stain. Pages 15 81 103-106 115 129-143 153/158 177 181 189-191 201 and 331 have tears of varying sizes. Seven pages are mended with tape which has darkened and in some cases stained the abutting page. One of the signatures groups of bound pages for pages 245-284 has a broken top stitch. We also noted several tiny check or ticks marks in the text.
