‎MERSEYSIDE PORTS LIVERPOOL ENGLAND UK. Good. 1893. On offer is a super unique relic of British marine and medical custom and nautical history being a manuscript journal and log of the medical officer for Merseyside Ports dated March 1893 - March 1898. A practical everyday work journal of 342 handwritten pages complete with an index of ships diseases etc. The author of this log was fastidious in detailing his encounters with the ships and their crew and passengers. So deaths from Cholera Yellow Fever ships arriving from a myriad of international ports. Here is a prime example: 1896 July 22 : Basil S.S. from Amazon ports. Message from Mm Officer that a man - James Bowlan - had been found suffering from typhus fever and had come from the above S.S. On enquiring I ascertained that the vessel arrived at this port on 4th inst and that at that time the man Bowlan was in good health. 1895 Feb 3. SS Tawrie. Case of suffocation in refrigeration chamber. Visited. The gentleman continued through December 31st 1896 using the memorandum and financial pages and did not stop until July 1897. She is a teacher and student discussing her own studies and that of her 'scholars'. Besides the usual details of rural life for a young woman crocheting ironing and the myriad of other indoor and outdoor chores this diary engages in a fair bit of local gossip with Sunday Church being the main source: "Daniel Chapel and wife parted yesterday." "They say Charlie Forbes turned May out of doors and she moved home yesterday." Our writer names everyone around her save for Father and Mother but surely local Norwich New York genealogists historians and collectors will from the many many clues ascertain our writer's name. ‎1899 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A PROMINENT NEW HAMPSHIRE RESIDENT DEALING WITH THE MAJOR POLITICIANS OF THE DAY‎

‎DUNBARTON MANCHESTER NEW HAMPSHIRE NH. Very Good. 1899. On offer is the original manuscript diary a distinguished New Hampshire resident. While he does not identify himself there are many many clues for local historians and collectors to assuredly discover the writer's identity. He is very involved in state politics and demonstrates familiarity with high level state officials. Perhaps he was a member of the state legislature. The author also buys and sells livestock own a store and has some business in Manchester. He usually notes that he goes to the store in the morning and to Manchester in the afternoon. He doesn't mention where he lives but does note that he paid taxes in Dunbarton and Goffstown. He also wrote of attending "Old Home Week" in Dunbarton. Other entries note his work in appraising estates attending a stockholder meeting and the annual meeting of the Merchants Bank buying stock auditing the selective accounts at Town Hall. At one of the meetings of the State Bank he notes: Sept 6 Went to Concord to attend meeting of the State Bank. Met Col Rice of the 26th Regiment who has returned from Manila. HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1899 Col. Rice was appointed by President McKinley to be Senior Colonel of all US Volunteers in the Philippines. He commanded the 26th US Infantry a New England Regiment. Here are more snippets: Jan 5 Went to Concord to witness the inauguration of Gov Rollins. Mar 9 Went to Concord for the day to attend the legislature. Mar 14 Attended Town Meeting. Republicans successfully electing every officer. Apr 29 In the afternoon went to Manchester to attend the funeral of Ex-Governor Smyth. In addition there are several entries about his attending meetings of the State Board of Equalization as well as meetings of the State Bank. He writes: Sept 26 Went to Concord and finished our work taxing railroads. The author also travels. In August he takes a trip to Hampton Beach. In October he travels to Boston to see Admiral Dewey. Throughout the diary the author writes of the many funerals he attends of NH citizens. One was a double funeral for a brother and sister another was for a woman who committed suicide by drowning herself. Sometimes he would appraise their estates. Oct 14.Went to Boston with Appleton to see Dewey. We had a fine place to see the parade which was very fine. Oct 15.Went to Boston again to see the decorations. They were beautiful. ‎1900s ORIGINAL SUPER INTERESTING JOURNAL OF AN UNIDENTIFIED CLOCKMAKER FROM MASSACHUSETTS ACCOMPANIED BY DRAWINGS NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS AND INFORMATION ABOUT CLOCK AND TOOL MANUFACTURING‎

‎Massachusetts. Good. 1900. On offer is a very interesting original journal written by an unidentified clock maker from Massachusetts. It has about 70 pages of handwritten notes drawings newspaper clippings and details of collectors and manufacturers all dealing with different aspects of clock making. The materials cover several decades the earliest of the entries probably made in the early 1900s: there is a loose leaf bearing a watermark: Crane's All Linen with a crane on shield and date 1881 some of the clippings are dated 1930s and 1950s. Few entries are related to history of clock making the first entry is notes to the lecture on rope making: "I have taken for my subject this evening - Rope - and will try and explain as best as I can some of the fibres of which it is made and the different ways in which it is made up". Many entries contain instructions measurements and drawings of timepieces made by noted 18th and 19th century American clock makers mostly from Massachusetts including Joseph H. Eastman Simeon Crane Simon Willard Edward Howard and Elnathan Taber there are measurements and notes for Simon Willard tall clock Waltham banjo clock collection Elnathan Taber hall clock Walter Durfee chime a shelf clock by Herman Clark and many other. Pages 46 - 47 contain notes and measurements for a clock made by the author himself with explanations how to calculate pitch diameter and make pinion cutter. The journal also provides information about producers of small tools clock parts materials used for clock and watch making as well as of collectors and manufacturers: "Wards down Congress St. to So. Boston is place to buy steel suspension spring is good x002 Wilkinsons for German silver nickel" etc. There are also recipes of clock cleaning solutions and some pieces copied from "A Rudimentary Treatise on Clocks Watches and Bells for Public Purposes" by Edmund Beckett. Condition: Good. The text and drawings are well preserved. The journal has a marbled cover that is torn up near edges the spine is worn. On offer is a charming original manuscript relic of Syracuse University being the 1901-1902 handwritten diary entitled by the author "Being the College Doin's of a Junior". Using a coverless 5.25 x 3 inch flipbook style notepad likely handmade tied with string our unknown author a young woman leaves many many clues naming nearly the entire student body over the 84 pages that will assuredly lead local historians and researchers to discover the writer's name. Beginning August 30th 1901 through to 1902 - hard to tell the end month as she lost the thread and then merely noted the day of the week! She writes of going to band practice football games chapter meetings Alpha Phi we believe lectures and speeches hearing a sermon by the new Bishop Fowler trying out for the Mandolin Club part time jobs hearing the Prohibition Club 'spiel' Debating Society entertainments and sports of every season from this incredibly enthusiastic student. ‎1904 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A NEW YORK RAILROAD WORKER AND THE STATE OF AMERICA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY‎

‎WEST ALBANY NEW YORK. Very Good. 1904. Full-Leather. On offer is the handwritten manuscript diary of an unidentified worker for the New York Central Railroad in 1904. He worked in the West Albany New York City shops and he lived some distance from the yard as he writes of walking home for the weekend. He boards during the week and often mentions the Y.M.C.A. and the boarding house. He writes every day of his activities both personal and at work until the end of October when he just stops. He seems to work at various jobs in the shops - the paint shop the steam track different sections. He also makes repairs as a general mechanic. The cold weather is a big factor and he dreads having to work outside in the winter. He tells of one day when it was so cold most of the men left. The author also makes some interesting observations: Mar 2 I have bin working on one of the cars that are to go to the World's Fare. The company are to send two trains the DeWitt Clinton and three coaches and an enjine a comp---- a kitchen car and a coach. We start on nine hours today and work at that til further orders. Mar 21.We helped to load the little train on the DeWitt Clinton for the World's Fare.They have her painted. The body part is straw color trimmed with light brown and the running part is olive with black springs. The enjine is olive and black. Apr 7 This morning there was a man struck when coming to work by the Twentieth Century Limited. The same crossing where Angus Brown was killed. The road could be straightened there and it would have a good many axcidents. Apr 11.I saw the new enjine that is to go to St. Louis. It is No 3000. She is a dandy. Apr 21.We have been nearly all day on Senator DePews private car No 100. She is a beauty. We finished off with mahogany inside and lit with electricity. It costs something to build a car like that. Apr 27.It rained just enough in the night to make it bad walking this morning and I was late in starting so had t hurry up and when I got there I found that Section C had burned down clean. There were 14 cars in the section and 404 was in the sealer and that was burned. She was all ready to go away. She was worth about 14000. They had quite a loss. Came near loosing my tools. On May 7th the author writes that the NYC started their half-holiday and he was laid off. He goes on to write about various other jobs he holds in the Albany area - stables buildings homes. Throughout the diary he also writes about his family friends a trip to Round Lake and mentions many names. This is a large diary measuring 7" x 4". ‎SPOKANE WASHINGTON PACIFIC NORTHWEST. Good. 1904. On offer is an interesting original 1904 manuscript diary handwritten by a 22 year old young man who works and lives in Spokane Washington. The unidentified author worked for H. G. Stimmel & Co. Stimmel was established in Spokane in 1882 as the inland Northwest region's first agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was an investor in mining and other local industries. He also was a "jobber" who dealt in fruits and vegetables. While unidentified there are a number of clues that local researchers and historians will find useful: the writer's family was based in Cheney Washington as he writes back and forth to his parents in Cheney. He mentions that his father selling their family home in Cheney and heading to Hood River Oregon. His mother's birthday is on January 28th and his father's birthday is on April 7th and he's 62 years old. Our author's birthday is on February 10th. He proves to be a dedicated diarist with chatty entries daily until October 10th and then the entries stop perhaps he goes to help his family move. Historians and collectors of Pacific Northwest Americana will find a treasure trove of early 20th Century details especially regarding Spokane. Here are some snippets: 1904 "January 11th Did not do very much business today but I was kept pretty busy most of the day. Drew $22.00 to pay up what money I had borrowed. Joe and John each packed up today with the intention of leaving for their respective homes tomorrow. Attended the 16th Anniversary of our Lodge this evening. Initiated 3 candidates and had a lunch. I was appointed Left Supporter to the Vice Grand for the evening term." "January 22nd A policeman shot a bugler last night while attempting to rob a safe. Had very little to do today. Was passing along the street and saw Dr. McRea from Hunter's. Had a friendly chat with him. Fred two other young fellows from the college and I went to see the play at the auditorium. The "Devil's Auction". The scenery was very good but the acting was nothing extra." "January 29th Received a letter from Effie. Mr. Anderson did not get back today. The city business was very quiet today but we had a big lot of freight to get off. Wrote a letter to Joe. E. at Chattaroy Washington. A little warmer today but still cloudy. Ate lunch today noon at the Model at the same table with "Col. Patrick Henry Winslow". Quite an honor!" "February 17th & 18th Pleasant out today and not very cold. Read in the paper this evening that an old schoolmate of mine Ray Murphy had shot his wife with a revolver but she is still alive. He killed himself. Her name was Kittie Campbell. Also an old schoolmate at Tekoa Washington. Edgar Dry and I went to the play "Are you a Mason". It was very good." "March 27th Threatening rain. Had a good time today with Ralph and Roholt. Took a walk down to the Post Office. Escorted Miss R. to church this evening and we stopped in at the Negro Church as we were going home but we did not stay long ha ha! Spent a very pleasant evening with Miss A. her cousin and Mr. Rising. Snowing this evening. Retired 11:50 P.M." "April 3rd Cloudy and cool this morning. Wrote a long letter to mother and Effie. Called Miss A. at 1:30 P.M. and we went down and took the observation car and rode all over the principal part of the city then took a ride on the Spokane Traction Co.'s Line. We then had a hearty dinner at Devenport's. We then attended service at the First M. E. Church. Rained almost all the afternoon." "April 10th Arose at 5:30 A.M. Had a light breakfast and then Fred and I got the Quick Delivery Co. to haul our trunks etc. down to the Hotel Touraine our new rooming place room 225. Got straightened up and took a bath and went over and called on Miss A. at 2:40 P.M. We went down to Oakes and ate dinner then went up on the hill south of town and spent a very pleasant afternoon picking flowers but I got quite sick and had to hurry home at 7:00 P.M. On offer is an original early 20th Century superbly detailed 33 page travel diary titled "My Notes on Canada Japan & China 1906-7." of an unusual east to west world voyage with succinct descriptive entries handwritten by an unknown diarist. Our traveller is an Englishman who begins by crossing the Atlantic to America and then an almost 3000 mile train crossing the width of Canada via Canadian Pacific Railway then a further two months in Japan a mere year after the Russo-Japanese War then one month in Shanghai's International Settlement a short stop in Hong Kong then a British Crown colony and a week in Malaysia. The 67¼ day tour is minutely logged and a factual treasure trove of travel and adventure details making for a unique telling of this England through Canada and then the Far East trip from 10 August 1906 to 22 January 1907 without missing a day. The exceptional attention to numerical detail even noting room numbers arrival times and minutes delayed temperatures and distances by the 70 year old traveller whose his birthday is the day before they land in Québec includes an itinerary of the journey on front endpaper and concludes with the total distance travelled 22507 miles noting of course that the latter does not include extracurricular excursions. The 7 x 4½ inch brown cloth book is slight fraying to front lower edge otherwise very good condition and internally clean. One third of the book is pre-pinted information for tourists some wonderful photos of sights to anticipate along the way including; Old Kassan a deserted Indian village and native basket sellers. The unidentified writer does a super job detailing every leg of their adventure. While not expressive the diary is a point by point recitation of each day's highlights. A great deal of financial detail is included in the telling of the trip which begins June 1 1909 through July 8th. ‎LAFAYETTE INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA IN. Very Good. 1909. On offer are two original handwritten manuscript diaries dated January 1st 1909 through May 23rd 1911. While the female author is unidentified a casual reading suggests the she is from central Indiana referring to Jefferson Mulberry Stockwell LaFayette Indianapolis Colfax and Attica etc. This diary is over 300 pages in a notebook style diary wherein the author details the hard working life of an Indiana farming family. It appears to be a very large operation being cattle horses sheep cash crops lumber beekeeping and all manner of fowl. They seems to be specialists in ducks naming several exotic species. A close reading should deduce the author as there are many clues which a local historian or genealogist will treasure in this great bit of early 20th century Americana. Making soap summer kitchens raising bees county fairs butter churning medicine men peddlers are just a few of the duties visits and work day efforts of the writer. Here are some snippets: 1909 "February 24th Cloudy colder. Rained in the morning turning to snow. Wind in W. very windy. Ground freeing in evening. I cleaned lamps. Mother and I cleaned the attic in morning. R. went to F. to make final settlement. I looked after the stock. Helped R. with feeding in evening." "May 27th Cloudy sun shone a little. Wind in S.E. Changed to S. and W. then S. Sprinkled a little in evening. We finished ironing. Mother churned. I cleaned stairs and vestibule. Washed bedroom windows and side. Mr. Eaton helping R. clean out raspberries. Then after dinner they put in tile. Mr. Timmon's here in morning. Medicine Man here in morn. I fixed peas. Mother dug. S. sick." "August 23rd Clear and warm. Wind in S. We washed. I baked 4 loaves of bread and I churned. Mr. Gervis here to look at Romea in morn. Mina sewing. R. burning and breaking rock. Mr. Eaton hauling sand. Mother and Laura went to Mrs. Elliott's to a meeting. R. and Wm took manure spreader to M. to get it fixed. Did not get home till late. ‎1912 - 1917 ORIGINAL DETAILED MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL AND DIARY OF A RURAL NEW HAMPSHIRE DOCTOR AND FIRST-AT-THE-SCENE ACCOUNT OF A GRISLY MURDER‎

‎TILTON NORTHFIELD WINCHESTER NEW HAMPSHIRE NH. Very Good. 1912. On offer is an original 1912-1917 manuscript diary handwritten by a Doctor whose practice was in the surrounding areas of Tilton and Northfield New Hampshire including Winchester and other locations in Belknap County. While he is unidentified by name local researchers and historians should assuredly have enough clues to ascertain his name. A medical journal the book has several printed pages of useful information for any doctor such as; Table of Adult Doses Thermometry Facts Regarding Children Digestion Rarer Symptoms and Posology. After that his call lists start. Each page has a place to write the name of the patient the day of the week they were seen the amount charged and a memoranda section to list any specific notes about the case. Some of the pages just have brief names and notes but others are more detailed. For example he writes that with Averline Atkinson he saw her at least 32 times from February 6th 1916 to May 20th 1916 and sadly at the end of those visits he writes "Died. Called to visit body." About the same thing with a Mrs. Gould. Visits her 31 times from April 3rd to May 21st 1913 and she died on the 21st at 9:15 p.m. Other examples of notes were; "Injured at Canton Mills. Amputated forefinger…….To Shaker Bridge……28 Electrical Treatments and that was to one patient……Ralph Jones at R. R. crossing. His little girl died of diphtheria age 3 years……colored person…….la grip…….Injury to left eye glass removal….died 4:50 p.m. very sudden….Been exposed to measles….fell down stairs. Fracture. Taken to hospital for operation….baby delivery……." and much more. Then comes that rather shocking entry. Along with the more or less mundane and daily doings of a busy doctor there is a four 4 page account of a husband who shot his wife as the doctor was the first on the scene. It seemed to be at the time undecided if it was an accident or not. This particular entry about the shooting is four pages long and has to do with William Grant of Northfield. Here is a snippet from just two of the pages: "August 22nd 1912 William Grant woke me about 3:30 a.m. saying "Doctor doctor I have shot my wife. hurry hurry. God knows I didn't mean to kill her". He seemed to be greatly disturbed in mind. Was bare foot and bare headed. I first went to the N. E. phone asked Central to call up officer Boswich. I dressed and went to the Grant home which was in total darkness. An object was on the floor off in the kitchen in a corner while I was asking Grant for a lamp. She tells me where that was also the kerosene oil. I found her after lighting the lamp lying in her pool of blood where she told me that he shot me. When Grant says God knows I didn't mean to kill you but I shot her. "Save her doctor save her". Up and into the bed. Cleaned up her face from blood found in left side of face upper edge of _____ bone an opening about the size of a pea from which great amount of blood was oozing also from nose and mouth. I traced the shelling to lower lobe of ear over or very near jugular vein. I couldn't locate the bullet. Asked Grant what he shot her with. He said "this" and held up a revolver. I asked him to let me see it. He handed it to me. I asked if it was loaded. He says there are 3 shots in it. I put it into my pocket. As yet no officer had arrived. I was with Grant and wife alone all of this time……." He goes on for two more pages talking about heading back to his office and putting the revolver in his desk. Then says he called up a Dr. Erskin for some help. They took her to the hospital and operated on her but could not find the bullet. Found her ear drum and veins badly shattered. Supposedly she lived through the operation. All this time Grant kept saying he didn't mean to shoot her. The revolver was a Smith and Wesson Springfield maker. 5 shooter with 2 chambers empty. His story ends with: "I know the number if I should ever see it again. I made a cross in left side of handle." On offer is a very intriguing original early 20th Century manuscript diary for the years 1913 1914 1915 and 1916 handwritten by an unidentified man married to Alice has children orders cigars who appears to be part of the prominent Haak family of Rochester New York. The author provides many clues for local historians and collectors but he is otherwise an enigma. He works we believe for L.M.A. who travels constantly but the writer holds down the shop constantly receiving and sending etchings prints and books to and from publishers galleries and individual artists. He is involved with artist exhibitions and individual art works. He issues checks and communicates with a very eclectic group of people and companies: Art Collectors Club of Philadelphia; Grays' of London; Holland Bros Birmingham; Anderson Auction Co; Martinsville Sanatorium; Liet. Gov. O'Neill of Mishawdia Ind; Salter Bros - Florists; Hudson Book Co; Pierce - Book Seller in Albany; Bishop Alerding; note to Editor of New York World about H.G. trial and many many more over the 4 years noted. Overall we get the impression he is the manager or partner in an art gallery/bookstore. The writer does a very nice job fleshing out his life from noting the mundane and the personal of the weather friends social life etc. He mentions for example that he talked to "Randolph Churchill" about Prohibition; saw Peter Pan at the Lyceum; used the Elite Laundry Service; wrote to Justice O. W. Holmes Jr.; pay raise of $40 in 1913; corresponds with Orson Lowell artist; went to Martinsville Ind. Sanatorium had a bath.came home about 4 weeks later on the Knickerbocker; Miller's girl commits suicide and much more. Many names are mentioned local and business contacts that will delight a researcher in unravelling this interesting mystery man. ‎Very Good. 1915. On offer are a super pair 2 of manuscript hospital or asylum patient medicine dosage log books dated 1915 and 1917 only identified by the initials of KM and later KF on the front covers likely nurses whose responsibilities seemed to be solely narcotizing their patients. Heroin Morphine Codeia Sedatives and narcotic interventions are detailed in the 'Night Reports' for dosages given to patients. The data offered in the books makes for a significant look into the treatment of patients a century ago and the difference in the attitudes of treatment between then and now. The difference could not be more startling. There are many patient names listed throughout and one can see some receiving dosages of heroin for months on end and several times a day. Undoubtedly a medical researcher or historian can deduce the rationale for the treatments from the data provided. The books are all entirely handwritten in either blue or red ink. There are many variations of handwriting which leads one to believe that various individuals recorded information on different shift nights. The first book 6 5/8" x 4" has 78 pages all of which have writing except for 3. The second book measures 6" x 3 3/4" and has 30 pages filled. ‎NEW YORK CITY NEW YORK NYC NY. Very Good. 1915. On offer is an interesting 1915 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified New York City fireman. While unidentified historians and collectors of the City's Fire Department should have many clues to perhaps place ownership to the book. It would be of further interest given that the writer has an uneasy relationship with the Department as he seems to be retiring from or quitting the New York City Fire Department. We learn reading the 1915 entries over 55 handwritten pages that our author spends a good deal of time eating at the Astor Hotel drinks egg shakes lives in a boarding house works the night shift and also mentions the murder of a 'Chinaman' by two men from Salem. Then later on in the diary he takes a position from the Mayor's office as an "on call" Fireman and says he's going to be working for the "Franklin Street House". He is also illiterate. Here are some snippets: 1915 "February 10th I got through work at 7 A.M. Took a wash and went to bed about 9 A.M. Got up at 4:30 P.M. Took a bath and shave and dressed. Roy and I went to the Astor lunch for supper and then we went to the C.T. Central Square Theatre to the show. I was not in there long when a fire alarm come in and I had to go 524. Went up to the engine house and reported to the Captain and also handed in my resignation to him. Returned to the house and went to work at 9:30 P.M. Roy and I had luncheon together at 12 M." "February 12th Got through work at 7 A.M. Had an egg shake. Took a washing. Box 526 came in. I did not have to go but I thought I would go and turn in my badge but I forgot it so I reported to "Lieut" and came back in the police wagon. This is my last run. Came back to the house about 8 A.M. Went to bed about 8:30 A.M. Got up at 4 P.M. Took a wash and dress. Took a walk up to the house and got my clean linen for the engine house and took it up and give it to the Captain with my badge. Had supper at the Astor Lunch. Returned to the house. All the folks went to the show this evening so I kept house for them. Changed clothes at 9 P.M. and made my first round at 9:30 P.M. House and met her and M. I. and her sister A. J. and went to the Fireman's Ball at the Casino Hall Summer St. left there at 11:20 P.M. and I went home with M. I……." "February 26th ……I had a letter from Civil Service Commissioners today asking me if I would accept a certified on the call test as Call Fireman so I telephoned up to Jim Nichols to find out if I would loose my places on the list for permanent and he said that he didn't think that I would. So I come up to the room and signed it and went down to the post office and mailed it……." "March 1st After the show we returned to the house and I changed clothes and went to work at 9:30 P.M. Roy "Pig" and I had luncheon at 12 M. I took a chew of tobacco and it made me sick so I had to go and lay down so Roy worked the rest of the night for me. I got up at 5:30 A.M. and went down to the office at 6:30. Roy and I went out and had some breakfast then I helped Fred put out the ashes then went and washed up and changed clothes……" "March 5th Got through work at 7 A.M. I did not eat at the cart this morning but I got an egg shake at Small's. There was a Chinaman murdered last night on Essex St. up near Chatham and the police come in and wanted me to keep a look out for two men that might come to let a room so this morning I went over to court thinking that they might arraign two men that they arrested in Salem this morning so I took a wash and change clothes and Barker and I went over together. We stayed there until 10:30 but they did not bring them up so I left Barker there and came back to the house and went to bed……." "March 6th ……A man came to see me this morning from the Mayors office to see if I would accept position as call fireman and I told him that I would so he went away again. I went to sleep about 1 P.M. Melvin came down around 3 o'clock and I give him a $1.00. He brought me a letter from M. A. and I had a letter from the Mayor's office with my appointment in it. It is to take effect March 15th. I am a going up to the Franklin St. House……." "March 8th Got through work at 7 A.M. Helped Fred put out the ashes. Went up home and put out the ashes there then return to the house and took a wash and went to bed about 9:30 A.M. Lillian come and woke me up about 3 P.M. to see Mr. Littlefield. I got up and dress and went down to see him and he wanted to see me in regards to the house. He said that he wanted to do away with the night watchman and wanted me to take charge of the house as Mr. and Mrs. Hill have had words and parted so he wanted me to look after things. While we was a talking Mrs. Buzzell came along and tried to make trouble for me with Mr. Littlefield but did not make any headway……." ‎LIVERPOOL ENGLAND ASEA BRITISH COASTAL WATERS. Good. 1916. On offer is a riveting handwritten manuscript World War I naval diary by an officer or higher rating aboard the HMS Zephyr a destroyer cruising the British coast protecting the shipping lanes in WWI. The unidentified author writes densely and very legibly from Monday 28th August 1916 finishing Tuesday 12th December 1916 over 53 pages. He details his journey from Acle near Great Yarmouth Norfolk up to the embarkation on his ship HMS Zephyr in Liverpool and then super detail on the daily happenings asea. There are several other destroyers and ships mentioned including HMS Porcupine destroyer HMS Waveney destroyer HMS Electra destroyer HMS Actaean torpedo boat HMS Brazen destroyer and many more. He also mentioned a collision by HMS Zephyr and an unknown steamer which meant they had to go to port for repairs. There are also areas in which he writes highlighted initials that appear to be a code. What is of particular interest in this mostly 'all business' naval log and diary are 2 passages right at the beginning of the journal wherein our authors confides he has shared his feelings of love for his girl Molly and she too recipricates. The next day he tells of meeting her for a goodbye. These sections were then crossed out! Legible still obviously a half hearted effort to remove this memory. Very intriguing given there is not a single other correction or deletion and hardly any more personal info. ‎ITHACA NEW YORK NY. Good. 1917. On offer is a very interesting archive of five 5 original manuscript diaries dated 1917 through 1926 handwritten by an unidentified rural woman artist living in the Ithaca New York area. While the author is unknown there are many clues and references that should no doubt lead local researchers and historians to discover her identity. Entries ranges from the mundane day to day such as watching a squirrel fixing the barn door wanting to go to bed at 9:00 PM but having to say up because visitors dropped by taking a friend to town etc. There are many references to creating art both original and copies of known works. The author seems to be a 'contract' artist who is commissioned to create works of art which she delivers to different towns. The author does a fine job detailing her life and times mentioning her daily work her friends and visitors and she appears to be an avid fisher frequently going out to the local lakes. Many places are named including: Cascadilla near Ithaca Cayuga Lake Beebe Lake Varna Enfield Binghamton. Names mentioned include: Fred Crutt Ed Middaugh Amelia Reed and the Zonta Club. Overall the approximately 4 x 6 inch diaries 1917 1918 1920 1924 1926 are in G condition with light normal usage showing. The 1926 diary does have a one inch tear on spine. ‎San Francisco Hong Kong Japan China. Good. 1917. Leatherette. On offer is a very interesting 1917 travel diary commencing May 14th with the record of having purchased the book to record memorandum of the unidentified writer's business trip to Japan. Our author a fur dealer departs on an overseas journey with a business partner leaving from San Francisco en route to his final destination - China. A perfect opportunity to witness China at a very important time in it's history being the birth of Republican China and China's war against Germany all in mid 1917. Besides the critical time in history the writer appears to be a most interesting individual as evidenced by his commentary and interactions and observations. Seems also to be a rough and tumble business type - gambling drinking disagreements with associates and general carousing all for the good of deal making and entertainment. Extensive notes include passing a Japanese warship 4th day ported Honolulu 7th day. Aboard the S.S. CHINA our gentleman uses record logs from the Captain's records to note latitude longitude distances traveled etc. time of arrival to Yokohama Japan; 12 days. Anchored in the Shiminoseke Straits to avoid a typhoon the day after leaving Kobe. Woosung 3 days later then to Hong Kong 4 days later. The time in China the long lonely nights midnight to 1:45am swimming drinking and writing home getting visits from colleagues. Then "Our Day" Thursday Oct 18 1917 - helping Britian fight the Hun's. Prompted by a telegram from home "come home quick" our writer begins the long process of ending his trip finally leaving Hong Kong Oct. 27th on the Tenyo Maru to Shanghai 3rd day. Another 3 days to Nagasaki to Kobe Yokohama Tokyo Japan. 18th day docked Honolulu. Further notes; wrestling the 'Japs' aboard ship arriving in San Francisco played baseball with the Giants bumming around . Cover says "Date Book" loose from the book appears to be faux leather on pink paper board. The cover is in poor shape but the interior is very good and quite legible. Mere months before the Russian Revolution in October 1917 makes for an interesting relic of the times. Casual translation finds the girl describing her life at school her classes friends and a section we found charming titled "I AM". Collectors and historians will recognize the uniqueness of such an unusual piece of Russian history. The boards are a little shabby with wear to the extremities; the boards and joints are reasonably sound; some of the pages have been torn out there is a color pull-out map. 5.25" x 3.75" x .5". ‎1919 - 1920 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN GIRL LIVING IN CHINA MERE MONTHS AFTER THE MAY FOURTH MOVEMENT AND REVOLUTION‎

‎TIENTSIN CHINA. Good. 1919. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of one young unidentified wealthy American girl's trip and times living in China for over a year during a hugely critical juncture in China's history in the early 20th Century. Mere months after as one online source provides: 'The May Fourth Movement Wusì Yùndòng was an anti-imperialist cultural and political movement growing out of student demonstrations in Beijing on May 4 1919 protesting the Chinese government's weak response to the Treaty of Versailles especially allowing Japan to receive territories in Shandong which had been surrendered by Germany after the Siege of Tsingtao. These demonstrations sparked national protests and marked the upsurge of Chinese nationalism a shift towards political mobilization and away from cultural activities and a move towards a populist base rather than intellectual elites. Many political and social leaders of the next decades emerged at this time. The term "May Fourth Movement" in a broader sense often refers to the period during 1915-1921 more often called the New Culture Movement'. Using a 5 year diary the author does not follow convention by beginning in July 1919 to the year's end doubles back and writes full pages or half pages later for 1920. While unknown she leaves many clues and is no doubt part of the extended American Diplomatic family in China at the time she leaves her home of New York August 28 1919 traveling through Chicago Wyoming Nevada and the Rocky Mountains before stopping in San Francisco California where she is hosted by friends our author discovers that there is "no place as beautiful as USA". Obviously from a well-connected and wealthy family the author experiences California and her first ride on an airplane before setting sail for Asia September 10 1919. She reaches Tokyo in late September travels through Shimonoseki and stops for a few days in Seoul and Antung Korea. Finally in October she reaches Munkden Mancurhia and then her final destination of Tientsin China. The author doesn't just gloss over the cities she explores: she writes in depth describing the culture and visuals she experiences in delightful detail. For example her Memoranda about Korea: "big straw hats mean mourning for parents white costumes and white straw hats mourning for emperor little black hats set high on head sign of caste. Women very neat - blue and pink dresses. Red flowers growing on roofs of houses. Clothes look like cross between kimono and Chinese dress. Antung on Yalu River - border between Korea and Manchuria. Mounds for graves." Once settled in with friends in Tientsin the girl quickly becomes involved in a very active social life with fellow Americans and Brits living near her. She lives her youth to the fullest. Every night is a party and every day a new friend a new man a new adventure. Many of these adventures take place after midnight at her crew's favourite spot the Astor House. Astor House was known at the time as "the prime venue for all diplomatic activity in Tianjin Tienstin" leading to the educated guess that our author had diplomatic connections in America. As great as her descriptive detail is about her travels and life in Asia in 1919-1920 her emotional entries about her young enthralling social life are just as captivating as she swings from devastation to elation in a sentence: "Disgusted with the single boys at Astor House - all with women - married women. Met Lieut Williams - wonderful dancer". She has the opportunity to meet exciting Americans as well as locals such as her encounter on October 13: Two China-men came to tea - one was Chef Eunich of Empress Dowager's harem". On October 22 she begins working in what she only describes as "the office". Her schedule at the office seems pretty relaxed as the majority of her entries focus on her leisure activities. She loves to visit the race track and bet on horses she is an avid horseback rider goes bowling takes tea with a variety of friends and young men swims and plays tennis all summer and of course she dances the night away in venues such as Empire Astor House the Grand Hotel de Pekin on a long weekend trip to Peking and the Anglo-American-Chinese Club. She has many suitors but connects with a man named Sokall who is present in her life until she departs China Sokall has competition as she spends a great deal of time with Soda dates Todd in the summer and writes passionately angry letters to Mac!. After a whirlwind year in China she sadly packs her bags and departs on October 1st 2020. About her departure she writes: "Train time. Sokall….all went down to see me off…left at 12:15. Had a compartment alone…Got to feeling blue. Wrote letters. Read "My China Days" Sokall gave me. He also gave me some gold buttons. The Davys were awfully nice to me. Arrived Mukden at 7:10. Kirk met me. Went to Yamato Hotel. Had dinner and a bath. Train left at 9". Things begin looking up when she meets her new suitor Colonel Arion on the ship on October 20.: "Met Col Arion. Played tournament with him. Sat out on deck talking and dancing with him until 1:30. He's a peach. Danced with him. Dances divinely". After a stopover together in Honolulu we discover that the Colonel will follow her back to New York: "the Colonel and I arranged about our transportation - he's going with me. Had lunch alone with him. Did an errand for him while he interviewed people." Together they travel through San Francisco Omaha and Chicago finally reaching New York on November 2 1920. Real life quickly resumes for our author whose writing clearly indicates that her heart is still in China. However she must now introduce the Colonel to her parents hunt for a job first casually then more seriously when she finds she has gone broke! and attend the theatre. The diary ends on New Year's Eve as our author prepares to ring in 1921. It ends with talk of China. "After dinner the Moore's Ethelyn's mother and CM came up and watched the old year out. Cocktails and champagne and talked of China code". Included tucked in is a small photo that may be the author and her mother but we can only speculate. Fascinating on so many levels: exotic extended travel to Asia meeting and making friends men and experiences a culture entirely foreign to her yet one that she is able to embrace and bring home with her to life in New York City the retelling of her travels make for super reading and a significant historical record of a significant time in China's history. On offer is a super original photo album compiled by an unknown traveller memorializing a trip taken to Colorado in 1919 there are a few photos from 1912 1918 and 1920 mostly of the Estes Park Denver and Greeley Colorado. Of particular interest to historians and collectors of the area are some great 'bird's eye views' of Denver and photos of the town of Greeley. Other highlights include a long shot photo of an Indian war dance in the Garden of the Gods. There is an inventory of the photos later in the listing. There is also a photo of the famous Stanley Hotel in Estes which we believe is unique. There is even a 4 photo "panorama" shot consisting showing an unnamed valley and mountains in the background but believed to be the Rocky Mountains. In this panorama it also shows their car with several people standing beside it. Fortunately there are handwritten titles for most of the photos. The 53 page album contains over 115 photos all but three attached with the black photo corners plus they seem to be glued too. The photos range from fair to great two are bent but overall G. Then two loose photo postcards in the back. One shows a group of people in the Manitou Park Colorado tram car and one of a group of people standing by a river. It has "transferred" stamped on the front and back. Finally a snap shot which shows a woman in a beautiful dress and it's marked "Photo by Westcott" and on the back is written "1921 Phyllis Burgoin H. S. Junior H. S. Banquet Dress." Most of the photos measure about 3¼" x 5¼" with a few smaller than that. The album itself measures about 7 ¼" x 11 ¾" and the covers are in great shape but we note a hint of mustiness. ‎RUTLAND VERMONT VT. Good. 1920. On offer is a nice 1920 period diary from a hard working Vermont woman. As is typical with these early diaries the women work along side the men and usually toil longer. In this book we find a cattle ranch near Rutland Vermont with our author spending a great deal of time breeding cows and bulls delivering milk tending calves but also chopping wood and all the household chores too. The only thing they haven't time for is complaint. This diary in particular will provide local historians and collectors of the importance of weather to these families. Severe blizzard weather is recorded on a near daily basis for many stretches of winter yet still they toil. Our writer is a very good diarist noting purchases costs sales weather and local events of all types from train wrecks to sheep killings by wild dogs and as is usual a detailed accounts section in the back of the page per day diary. On offer is a handwritten manuscript diary though undated is for 1925 research finds of an extensive train trip from Watertown New York to Los Angeles California our unidentified author a woman in all likelihood in her twenties does the whole tourist experience in California for almost 6 weeks from July 1st through August 14th when the diary ends mysteriously on the return train when she has reached Kansas. She does an admirable job of naming all the travelers she meets and spends even the briefest of time with. Many different experiences from traveling though the Rockies in Las Vegas to the spectacle of movies opening in the movie capitol of the world! A sighting of Robert Montgomery at the train station is one of the highs while sadly the drowning of a young boy is one of the few lows. ‎1928 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF A CHINESE FAMILY LIVING IN MANCHURIA SHORTLY BEFORE JAPAN INVADED AND DECLARED IT A PUPPET STATE‎

‎GURIN MANCHURIA REPUBLIC OF CHINA. Good. 1928. On offer is a unique and rare black-and-white photograph taken in 1928 in the Chinese region of Manchuria in Northeast Asia. The photo was taken just three years before the Japanese would invade Manchuria and declare and proclaim it to be Manchukuo a puppet state under the control of the Japanese army. The photo is of a family of six a father and mother and their four young children standing in front of what appears to be a fence surrounding their modest property. The back of the photograph states some background information on the photograph: “In Gurin Manchuria taken in 1928 some of the Chinese from interior China. Memory of a very interesting trip while aboard SS Mobile City.” The ‘SS Mobile City’ was a cargo ship built in 1920 by the Chickasaw Shipbuilding Company for Isthmian Steamship Company a shipping company founded by US Steel in 1910. It’s home port was New York City. The photo appears to be a gelatin silver print. It is fairly washed out with some detail being slightly blurry especially in the faces. This could be because of an improper print procedure or through age and bad storage conditions it is unknown. The photograph is pasted onto a piece of white board. The handwriting on the back is clear and legible. ‎SAN DIEGO LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA. Good. 1932. On offer is a super original 1932 through 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified Southern California young newlywed Navy wife traveling for the most part up and down the West Coast of America following her husband Glen who is stationed mostly in San Diego and Long Beach but does go to Bremerton Washington and some trips to the East Coast. Written right in the heart of the Great Depression the diary begins with the couple married a year and this is the year he is stationed in Bremerton. They take a road trip in April to Arizona New Mexico Texas Kansas Nebraska Illinois Wisconsin Iowa Wyoming Idaho and Oregon finally ending in Bremerton six weeks later. Not too long after it's back to southern California. We note many local references to events: in 1933 Long Beach experienced an earthquake which she mentions because the day before she drove from San Diego to Long Beach to attend the fights with Glen and sure enough the next night while at the fights the earthquake hit. She also writes of the California Pacific International Exposition that was held in San Diego starting in 1935 and also 1936. It was held at Balboa Park. Here are some snippets: 1932 "January 3rd Glen and I drove to Hollywood and went to matinee at Grauman's Chinese. Saw Hell Divers. Dinner on Seventh St. at French place. Nice day….January 23rd Having a Santa Ana today. Cold too. Glen and I packed part of the things this afternoon. At night we went to Palace and saw "Frankenstein". Terrible….February 28th Thelma Beal and Hazel Cox came by to see me this A.M. In the afternoon I took car and we all went to waterfront and flying field. Saw Auto gyro there….April 4th Glen and I left San Diego Cal. this A.M. Had lunch at Mexicali. Dinner and night at Gila Bend Arizona. Sure hot today. Went past farm….April 6th Breakfast at Lordsburg N. M. Lunch at Juarez Mex. Dinner and night at Roswell N. M. All afternoon and night in wind and sandstorm. Drove 379 miles….April 16th Got car at noon and drove to Junction City. There we met paving and storm. Wind cloudburst etc. Spent night at Kansas Hotel Topeka….May 10th Stopped at Anamosa. We had breakfast with the folks in Benton and left about 7 A.M. Lunch in Marshalltown Ia. Dinner and night in Omaha Nebraska at Rome Hotel. Saw show at night….May 15th Breakfast in Rock Springs Wyoming. Lunch at Soda Springs. Dinner and night at Twin Falls Idaho. Went to Spokane Falls and high bridge over Snake River….May 17th Breakfast in La Grande Oregon. Lunch at The Dalles. Beautiful scenery. We followed the Columbia River most all day. Spent the night in Chehalis Washington……June 20th Glen had to go back to ship last night. Colorado came in today. He was home at one. At night we went to Tower and saw "No Greater Love." Rain….July 5th I went to town after groceries. Almost got kidnapped. At night Glen and I went to Beal's. I beat them all playing rummy….July 20th and 21st Breakfast Eugene Oregon. Lunch at Grants Pass Oregon. Dinner and night at Redding California. Had car oil changed and gas at night. Sure hot and tired….Breakfast at Redding Cal. Caught the 12:30 ferry from Vallejo to San Francisco. Ate lunch on there. Dinner in apt. at 344 Fulton Joe Joan and I…August 14th We went to L. A. Drove down by Olympic Stadium. Went to Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Saw "Strange Interlude." Glen had to go back to ship at ten tonight……" 1933 "January 11th A terrible "Santa Ana" came up last night. Everything covered with dust today. Glen could not get back to ship. Was home all day….January 19th Storm at sea. Glen could not get back to the ship. He tried morning and noon but no luck. It rained all day. Mr. and Mrs. Weeks called afternoon….January 22nd Glen and I went down to see the U. S. S. Constitution "Old Ironsides." Glen had to leave tonight. Sure hated to see him go. It rained all day and night…. February 10th I was home day and night. Dad went to see Dr. mother went to beauty parlor. Tonight they both went to Depression Party. Wayne and I had dinner alone….March 10th Went to fights with Glen then to see Dr. Clark. Blanch Lyons Johnny and Donny came. Then alas the earthquake! The town in destruction. Terrible….March 11th Glen and I sat in car last night near Newport. I took him back to ship. He was home by nine and we left for San Diego. Used candles for light at night and cooked breakfast with wood….February 3rd Glen and I went to Frisco on 3:20 ferry. Joe got off work at 8 o'clock. We went to see Barbary Coast. Went to Purcell's Spider Kelly's then to the Cane….February 10th U. S. S. San Francisco put into commission today at Mere Island. Leona and I went over. Dinty met us and Ted took us over new ship. Glen washed afternoon….February 17th I left 448 Wilson and caught 12:30 ferry from Vallejo. Went downtown in Frisco. Left there at 5 P.M. Met Mr. Hammer and Miller Mrs. Calley. We watched them dance…. February 18th I met Mrs. Mills and Dona before we got to L. A. harbor at 11. Left there at 3 P.M. The folks met me at ship in San Diego at 8. Had message from Glen….March 13th Nellie and I went to Aqua Caliente to the horse races. She had pass to the Club House. Glen went to attend to tax exemption this afternoon….April 1st Glen and I went for a drive afternoon. We picked up a couple of cadets off the German warship Karlsruhe. All went to Caliente….April 8th My sweetheart left this A.M. I took him down to the docks said goodbye among tears. Afternoon wrote to Glen and drove the folks down to water front….June 15th Air male from Glen telling me I could come east. Went down to see about S. S. ticket. Looked for clothes. Wrote Glen tonight….June 21st Breakfast at Seligman Arizona time up 1 hour. Lunch at Winslow. First felt heat then dinner at Albuquerque. Only a couple of hours of heat today. Cooler tonight….June 23rd Breakfast on diner with Hulda Suter. We arrived Chicago 7:50. I left there on G. I. Lehigh Valley. Lovely air conditioned cars. Went thru Canada Niagara Falls about 12 A.M….June 24th Breakfast in diner. Arrived N. Y. thru tunnel under E. River. Checked bags and took subway up town. Went sight seeing. Went to ship about 2. Left at 5:30….July 13th Big Navy parade afternoon and dance at night. Glen has the duty! I had dinner out. I washed blouse and hose A.M……September 3rd Glen home all day. Labor Day. Glen got transferred to the Koka today after so long a time. Tonight we went to Coronado to see the Beal's. Both ways via ferry….March 3rd Glen had his first duty on the Koka. I went with McBride's to look for friends. Didn't find them. They left for Long Beach about four….May 22nd Glen took us all up to get our pictures taken for our Expo ticket. Sure a crowd there. Pictures are funny looking….June 1st I came home this A.M. Glen got home from Chauffer duty about two. We went to park late afternoon. Went thru Federal Building tonight Expo….August 15th Glen called. They are going to San Maguel Islands this afternoon. Mother dad and I went to Expo. Saw Fanchon and Marco Show…." 1936 "February 9th Glen came home early A.M. Afternoon we went with Blanch and Leroy to Naval Training station but they could not see the boy. We all went to T. J. Tijuana tonight and danced….April 19th Honeymoon not over. Glen came home this A.M. So did I. We went to Expo afternoon. Took in the Medical Building. Home tonight….May 29th Glen had to go early. Ship went to Island. I went to Dr. afternoon. I had dinner with father. Came home later. Glen home at 11 P.M….June 19th The ship went to San Clemente Island. So Glen is gone again today. I went to see Dr. Got my watch and wedding ring with new stone added…." The book proper has a lovely though worn gold cover. The lock was cut off and absent.
