Before composing this ensemble several editions were published: in the first place an Introduction to the history of Dannemarc in 1755 which forms in our copy the first illustrated volume of a large folding map of Scandinavia. Two volumes in 4 will appear a few years later then a third. The story was then continued until 1720 then until 1773 in this edition. Full flamed calfskin bindings slightly posterior. Smooth backs decorated with 4 irons and wheels. Title and volume pieces in green calf. Misses in the head of volumes 5 and 7. Friction. 2 blunt corners. Nice copy. The book is considered the best ancient history of Denmark it is indeed extensively documented and contains in addition a study of mythology and the 33 fables of what composes the Edda as well as other epics. Before the historical narration the first two volumes are an anthropological approach of Denmark addressing the specificity of this country as much by its geographical location as by its customs and its mythology. The author lived for a long time in Denmark and was tutor to the reigning prince at the same time as he was a professor at the Royal College of Copenhagen. Penniless he begs his cousin to come to his aid: ""l'argent des pardessus. et autant pour le voyage et menues dépenses. me sont devenues indispensables quoi que je fasse."" ""the money for overcoats. and as much for the journey and small expenses. have become indispensable to me whatever I do."" and confesses to feeling better in Avignon: "". le climat d'Avignon me convient assez - je n'y ait pas du tout de fièvre c'est ce qui fait je pense que je bois si peu."" "". the climate of Avignon suits me well enough - I have no fever at all here which is why I think I drink so little."" The postcard depicts the Notre-Dame de Tout-Pouvoir chapel of Avignon cathedral. An opium-addicted and inveterate alcoholic dandy a poet unknown to the general public but admired by his peers notably by José Luis Borges Paul-Jean Toulet was a novelist Monsieur du Paur Mon amie Nane but above all a master of poetic prose. His masterpiece Contrerimes a collection of quatrains published after his death combining enclosed rhymes and crossed metrical structure assured him posthumous success and inspired his poet friends including Francis Carco and Tristan Derème who taking him as a model proclaimed themselves ""whimsical poets"". An edition in 2 volumes in-18 was published at the same time. Full red morocco binding with long grain Russia leather slightly later. Smooth spine decorated in grotesque style with a central tool and semi of stars; roll at head and tail. Gilt title. Boards decorated with a series of border rolls foliage Greek keys chains dentelles. Dotted roll on edges Greek key border inside. All edges gilt. Except for one yellowed gathering very fresh throughout. Small brown speckling on boards. Beautiful binding elegant in the taste of Bozérian. Bitaubé's reputation was already solidly established since his translation of the Iliad when he gave this epic poem in prose inspired by the story of the Hebrew patriarch who envied by his brothers was sold to a caravan of merchants etc. The work quickly achieved enough success to see several editions and be translated in several European countries.
