Paul RENOUARD - (J READING)
"Avant le ballet"" - Lithographie originale sur Japon - L'Estampe Moderne
Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1898. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Septembre 22.50 x 31.50 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original lithograph executed by Paul Renouard for L'Estampe Moderne series number 17 published in September 1898. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins laid paper mounted on Japan paper artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the reverse; engraving preceded by a tissue guard inscribed with the artist's name the title and a text extract. Lithograph inspired by an extract from La Danse et les Ballets by J. Reading reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a complete work in itself. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. A handsome copy. PAUL ROBESON, WESLEY A WILLIAMS
1958 COPY OF 'HERE I STAND' BY ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST ICONIC AFRICAN AMERICANS WITH HANDWRITTEN NOTES OF RAGE AND BITTERNESS BY ANOTHER RENOWNED AFRICAN AMERICAN
New York NY. Very Good. 1958. On offer is a super original relic of the Civil Rights era and the real bitterness and rage felt by some if not many on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement being the personal copy of the 128 page manifesto-autobiography 'Here I Stand' by Paul Robeson published in 1958 by Othello Associates New York owned annotated and underlined throughout by Wesley A. Williams 1897 - 1984. The target of lifelong racism as the third African-American man ever to join in 1919 the New York Fire Service Williams' ownership signature and despairing annotations fill the book from the front pastedown on: almost every page bears Williams' underlining but it is his commentary as it responds to Robeson's text which is revealing and intensely moving. The pages are stained with his holographic bitterness: he writes regarding the chapter 'Love will find out the way' in the aftermath of the assassination of President Kennedy Williams' comments: 'This Paul is your dream. Today I dream no more as I have lived my 66 years against this brutal white American who lives and dies on the blood of all people. A people who assassinate a good man like their President Kennedy - Kill coloured Sunday school children. Will stop at Nothing. They respect nothing but Force.' Underneath Robeson's suggestion that 'We must wait we are told until the hearts of those who persecute us have softened' Williams has jotted: 'That would be Never'. HISTORICAL NOTES: Wesley Williams joined the New York City Fire Department in 1919 and on the same day the Captain of the Engine Company retired and every other man requested reassignment. Williams persevered in the face of discrimination and became the prime mover in the creation of the Vulcan Society which exposed segregation within the Department. ; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CIVIL RIGHTS ERA WESLEY A. Paul SIGNAC - (to Camille PISSARRO)
"Cela vous ennuirait-il sic d'écrire à Mirbeau qu'un Signac à votre avis ne ressemble pas plus à un Seurat qu'un Hokousai à un Hiroshigé. "" Signed autograph letter addressed to Camille Pissarro
1894. Fine. s. d. 23 janvier 1894 22.60 x 17.50 cm 2 pages sur un double feuillet déplié Autograph letter signed by Paul Signac addressed to Camille Pissarro written in black ink over two pages and signed with the artists monogram. This letter was transcribed in the article by Pierre Michel and Christian Limousin entitled ""Octave Mirbeau et Paul Signac - Une lettre inédite de Signac à Mirbeau"" in Cahiers Octave Mirbeau no. 16 March 2009 pp. 202-210. ""Mon cher Maître Cela vous ennuirait-il sic d'écrire à Mirbeau qu'un Signac à votre avis ne ressemble pas plus à un Seurat qu'un Hokousai à un Hiroshigé. si toutes fois sic le reproche d'imitation dont il cherche à m'accabler vous semble injuste. L'amitié que vous m'avez toujours témoignée et les compliments que vous avez bien voulu faire de mes toiles m'autorisent à vous demander ce service. Cordialement. PS"" A fine letter in which Paul Signac seeks the support of his master Camille Pissarro after a scathing critique published by Octave Mirbeau in L'Echo de Paris. In this article featured on the front page of L'Echo de Paris of 23 January 1894 Octave Mirbeau spares Signac no harshness: « M. Signac a voulu continuer Seurat. Why this obsession with Seurat « At the beginning of 1894 the position of Mirbeau Geffroy Pissarro and a few others was to consider that Neo-Impressionism had in fact died in 1891 with the passing of Seurat. Their retrospective view of this artistic venture led them to think that it was not a continuation of Impressionism by new scientific means but a reaction against it even a liquidation of the movement.» Cahiers Octave Mirbeau. Pissarros reply to Signac also transcribed by Michel and Limousin was not long in coming: it « l'ennuirait d'écrire ce que vous me demandez à Mirbeau et cela pour plusieurs raisons. . « Disheartened and deprived of the authority of a master revered by the critic Signac was left to devise himself without delay the reply to address to Mirbeau . » ibid. This response took the form of a long letter written the same day as the one offered here and now preserved at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Austin Texas: « Je reconnais hautement que c'est Seurat qui a insta unknown

Paul SIGNAC
"Je me suis mis à peindre. j'en avais faim"" Signed autograph letter with a sketch
Viviers 1926. Fine. Viviers 18 août 1926 14 x 9.50 cm quatre pages sur un bifeuillet Autograph letter signed by Paul Signac 4 pages written in blue ink on letterhead from his property ""Les Maraniousques Viviers Ardèche"" Paper lacks not affecting text at central fold of bifolium and lower margin of first leaf. Signac addresses his correspondent from his small house situated on the right bank of the Rhône south of Montélimar where he had just settled: ""This country is very beautiful and our little house is beginning to get organized. You will see this when ""coming back down"". He would reside there until the end of his life. After devoting himself to illustrating Stendhal's Memoirs of a Tourist he confides: ""I have started painting. I was hungry for it"". The painter continues his missive with a comment probably concerning a house in the Breton country of his addressee where Signac passionate about port life regularly resided and had created many of his canvases: ""It was not very nice of them to increase us by half the price paid. precisely. .
