‎England. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1945. Non-Book. On offer is a typed letter signed by Samuel Courtauld 1876-1947 written to Fredrick "Fritz" Solomonski 1899-1980. This letter is dated July 16 1945 on 12 North Audley Street W1 London letterhead. Addressed to Mr. Solomonski Courtauld writes to Solomonski requesting the delivery of a painting of the artist's which he has purchased titled "In the Forest" Courtauld asks that the painting be delivered to his address following the closure of Solomonski's exhibition and states he will send a cheque to Solomonski "in due course". Courtauld signs the letter in ink. BIO NOTES: Fritz Fredrick Solomonski a German refugee living and exhibiting in Britian. Refers to the potential viewing of Solomonski’s work “In the Forest”. Very Good condition. Dr. Frederick K. “Fritz” Solomon née Solomonski 1899-1980 painter was born in Berlin Germany in 1899. In 1938 when the synagogue he was serving at was torched by Nazis and he was subsequently summoned by the Gestapo he left Germany with his wife Margot and emigrated to England. Solomonski was interned in the Isle of Man in Hutchinson Square camp in the early 1940’s as a prisoner of war along with many other artists. Samuel Courtauld was an English industrialist great-nephew of textile magnate Samuel Courtauld who is best remembered as an art collector. He founded the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 1932 and after a series of gifts during the 1930s bequeathed his collection to it upon his death. By the early 20th century the Courtauld family business had become a major international company having successfully developed and marketed rayon an artificial fibre and inexpensive silk substitute. Samuel Courtauld took charge of the firm from 1908 as general manager and as chairman from 1921 to 1946.The letter measures 4-1/2 x 7 inches and is a typed signed note.; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown‎

Swiss author born in Lausanne the author devoted himself to a literary career after leaving the army he made his name from 1783 with 3 sentimental and epistolary novels then in vogue which we find in Baculard d'Arnaud and whose origin goes back to Richardson. His 3 novels enjoyed a certain renown in France and in Switzerland. Camille is a novel where psychological analysis plays a major role we see the romantic journey of two friends who are complete opposites one is thoughtful and reasoning melancholic the other prides herself on simplicity and gaiety and sees no interest in reflection. The most loving will not be the one we think. The work is interesting not only because we follow the character of two young girls and their sentimental adventures but because it exposes the condition and life of educated young girls at the end of the 18th century. ‎1907 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A NO GUFF MONTANA LAWMAN FORMER JUDGE CIVIL WAR VETERAN MINER AND NEWSPAPER MAN‎

‎MONTANA OTTUMWA IOWA SHERIDAN COUNTY DAKOTA. Very Good. 1907. On offer is an original significant historic record of late 1800s and early 1900s pioneer and western life being the original handwritten manuscript diary of a fascinating and eclectic Montana pioneer whose many job titles included lawman judge Civil War veteran teacher miner and newspaper editor Samuel Dow Bollinger 1848 - 1917. The 3½ x 6 inch 40 page book begins in 1907 though much is retrospective with annual entries through 1917. The last two entries of 1917 seem to indicate he was ill and likely died about that time. The first page or so gives history of his parents who had come from Pennsylvania writing entries covering his birth through the rest of his life and a very interesting life and one uniquely reflective of the times in which he lived. In the early 1860s he worked for a couple newspapers in Ottumwa; The Courier and The Mercury from 1866 - 1869 Bollinger and he also served with the US Army in the Dakota Territory. After the army Bollinger headed to Missouri marries his first wife and then in 1880 he moves to Montana where he joins the Odd Fellows Lodge at Virginia City. He did some freighting work for the railroad became justice of the peace at Sheridan County. He details several accounts of criminals that he encountered. Later he became an itinerant teacher at several different locations. In 1889 he founded and published a newspaper at Pueblo Colorado called "The Pueblo Democrat" - he adds that his partner W.G. Jackson who "beat him out of his interest and then let the paper die" runs for Supt. of Schools in 1890; in 1894 he is in Cripple Creek doing some mining and also working with a newspaper and publishing the "Daily Crusher"- then back to Missouri and then back to Montana in 1898 as Justice of the Peace again in 1904 at Sheridan County and the in 1913 he goes to Arkansas where it appears his life ended. The work draws indeed from two registers autobiographical memoirs and the historical genre and one will find there amorous adventures numerous travels and descriptions as well as a rigorous account of the battles and armies present in Italy. ‎SALISBURY AMESBURY BLACK ROCKS MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1855. On offer is a remarkable and comprehensive set of diaries of five 5 diaries by Samuel J. Brown of Salisbury Massachusetts and one 1 of his son. There are 6 diaries in all and they represent the years: 1855 1858 1860 1861 1866 and 1891. The first five were written by Samuel and the last diary 1891 was written by Fred C. Brown Samuel’s son of Amesbury Mass. Samuel was born about 1835 and married Susan Osgood on September 13th 1860. They had one son Fred Currier Brown. The first two diaries were written before his marriage and then comes the 1860 diary written the year of his marriage. The 1855 diary has an entry for every day but many of those are just short one liners. The 1858 diary is completely full and is the largest and most comprehensive dairy in the lot. He has written long detailed entries in this one including several trips taken. The 1860 diary has 152 days worth of entries the 1861 diary has 115 days of entries the 1866 diary has just a few sporadic notes and finally the 1891 diary has 132 days worth of entries. In the back of the 1858 diary Samuel has written a brief summary of his life’s work between the years of 1851 and 1857 which gives you an idea of the author and his activities during this time: “Commenced services in E. Allen’s store October 1st 1851. Left store and went to trade at West Amesbury April 30th 1855. Left West Amesbury for good November 28th 1855. Went to school in Boston December 4th 1855 through School March 4th 1856. Commenced services second time in E. Allen’s store April 1st 1856 making 5 years to October 1st 1857.” Samuel is working in E. Allen’s store when much of his diaries were written. The 1858 and 1860 diary often speak of working at the store and the activities done and observations made there. In the 1858 diary his life is quite full with social events which makes this diary particularly interesting and historically significant. He belongs to the Minnehaha Club and attends their meetings and functions quite regularly. He’s even in charge of taking care of the club room. He loves dances attending social events at Washington Hall sleigh rides attending lectures singing school and so much more. During the 1858 diary he also takes a camping trip by boat to Black Rocks Plymouth County Massachusetts which he writes all about and in great detail. In the 1860’s diaries it is evident that a great change coming to the United States: the onset of the civil war. Each diary also contains some memoranda at the end of the book as well as a “Cash Accounts” section that details living expenses each month with the items written next to the date bought and a tally at the end of the month comprising “Cash Received” “Cash Paid Out” and finally “Cash on Hand” which carries over to the next month: “Cash Account - May. Balance from April - $1.46; Oranges - $.03; Horse-back ride - $.58; Coffee - $.08; Saddle - $3.75; Ale - $.15.” This is present in every diary with differing degrees of comprehensiveness and completeness with the exception of the 1855 diary. ‎1946 Manuscript Letters about Montross Virginia and George Washington’s National Monument from a National Parks Employee Who Settles and Works There‎

‎Hartstown Pennsylvania. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1946. Non-Book. On offer are a series of three letters from a man moving to Virginia to work at George Washington’s National Monument and making a new home in Montross Virginia the very year it was incorporated by the Circuit Court of Westmoreland County. The letters are those of Samuel Marcus Mark Miller 1889-1949 to his uncle Milo H. Miller 1863-1951. Mark writes to his uncle of his elderly parents in Hartstown Pennsylvania his adult children and his wife Dora. However the main focus of his letters is on his job and his move to Montross Virginia. Mark was an employee of the National Parks Services and had been working in Bedford County PA since 1935. The National Parks Services transferred a large number of Pennsylvania land to the Department of Forests and Waters to the state as of January 31 1946. Mark’s employer offered him a job in Virginia and at 57-years-old he had no choice but to take it in order to finish his career with a comfortable pension. Mark’s first letter is dated January 1946. He tells his Uncle the news about his job and the changes in the Parks Services his plan to drive to Virginia to check it out and seek housing and his reluctance to move. By his second letter in September 1946 Mark and Dora are living in a short-term rental in the region while they seek long-term housing. He provides a pretty good description of the history of the region its connection to George Washington and how the National Monument site where he works was developed and funded. In his final letter written in December 1946 Mark shares that he finally found housing in Montross VA less than 12 miles from George Washington’s National Monument. He gives a very thorough description of Montross in 1946 his knowledge of the government’s work and plans for the National Monument and his work and colleagues with the National Parks Services as a clerk at the monument. Some excerpts provide a sense of the content: "…The Blue Knob Recreational Demonstration Area Union Twp - Bedford County Penna upon which I have been located since Mar 1935 is being transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Dept of Forests and Water as of Jan 31 1946. The National Park Service have offered me a position of lesser rank and with less pay at George Washington Birthplace National Monument Westmoreland County Virginia…Dora and I will drive down in about a week from now…” Jan 1946. “.I can now retire at 65 with about a $90.00 per month pension. This with some part time work will provide for Dora and I…Marilyn has only one year at Indiana after this year then she will be on her own if she gets a school and they don’t seem to have any trouble locating their graduates from the State Teachers Colleges…” Jan 1946. “.Quite lonesome here for Dora as we are back in the country and only one other family lives here which is quite close and helps some. This area is known as George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument and we have a post office here which is Washington’s Birthplace Va…” Sept 1946. “Mother and Dad are about as good as one can expect. Dad is really in better shape than Mother.Ken is in Sharon with Westinghouse where he has been since 1937. They have a very nice home that they build and Mrs. Adsit is with them. She is in pretty bad shape…” Sept 1946. “.Very old town but only incorporated within the last 6 mos. Population 250. 1 Courthouse. 2 Banks. 2 Drugstores. 2 Service stations. 2 garages. 2 grocery and meat stores. 2 barber shops 1 White and 1 Colored.Quite an industry in some sections. Many tomatoes raised each year and several canneries on this neck. The courthouse records contain an inventory of personal property of George Washington’s father…. So you can see it is quite an old town…” Dec 1946. “.Only two houses on the Monument or I would have been living there too. Expect Gov’t will build another house or two before long. The organization here is quite small. Supt - Clerk - Historical Aide - 2 laborers and a colored woman who cleans…” Dec 1946. Sadly Mark would die unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 60 not fulfilling his plan to work to 65 for the pension. Taken together these letters provide both an insightful look at the challenges of the working class in the immediate post-war era and a truly fascinating dive into the tiny but significant town of Montross Virginia in its very early days. BIO NOTES: Samuel Marcus Mark Miller 1889-1949. Born in Hartstown Pennsylvania to Myron Manson Miller 1859-1949 and Sarah Mitchell 1861-1949 Mark married Lucy Violet Adsit 1910-1923. They had one child Kenneth Marcus 1912-1985. Mark later married Dora Elizabeth Lakin 1891-1982 and they had a daughter Marilyn June Miller later Harvey 1925-2022. Marilyn completed Teacher’s College in Indiana Pennsylvania and went on to teach in Westmoreland County for 40 years. The letters are written on 8x10.5 inch paper. The letters occupy 14 single sided pages and are written in a clear cursive hand in pen. Milo Miller has bound the three letters with a brown ribbon though they are bound out of order. ‎1929 UNUSUAL ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A DESTITUTE PERHAPS DELUSIONAL STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE LIVING ROUGH SOUTH DAKOTA MAN HIS MOTHER AND A HORSE NAMED GOLDY‎

‎PIEDMONT SOUTH DAKOTA. Good. 1929. On offer is a first-hand account of a man struggling at the onset of the Great Depression. His handwritten journal measures 6.25 inches by 4.5 inches on a landscape layout. It contains 70 pages. It is about 50% complete. The stiff cardboard cover and pages are secured by a ribbon tie. The journal is in good shape. The entries are made on un-numbered and undated pages in pencil and the handwriting is legible. Samuel E. Peyton lived in the Black Hills just east of Piedmont SD. We do not know his age. To say that he is poor would be a huge understatement. Peyton was destitute. He lives in a cabin above the village of Piedmont with his mother and they barely subsist. His other companions are a horse named Goldy a cat named Dit and a dog. He has a car that is not running and that the seller is trying to repossess. The cabin seems to be inside the Black Hills National Forest. This didn't endear him to park rangers who drop by to see if he has moved on. He spends his days chopping wood and going down into Piedmont to check his mail. He has applied for an unspecified pension and is hoping for a positive answer. His mother is a painter and has sold some art and is awaiting payment. His entries contain a number of wry observations of the people he encounters - whether his friend Jim or the woman who runs the general store. He wrestles with the idea of taking a job cutting wood but fears it will impede his ambition to become an aviator! He sees Jim most days when he goes into town. Jim and presumably his wife Mama own a house where they rent some rooms. When they decide to move out of Piedmont they offer it to Samuel and his mother and let them keep the rent as well. The following entries will give a flavour of this interesting journal: ".We have been broke since Christmas and have been living on spuds and onions mostly. Duhamel's were to pay us $30 for pictures the first of January but didn't. They haven't payed us yet. We are hoping to get our pension as usual. Also the Forest Service is trying to kick us off as usual. Mr. Oliver seems to be our only friend. He is a good one though." Jan 23; ". Went to Piedmont today. Haven't heard from pension yet or Duhamel's either. It was 21 degrees below this morning in Piedmont. Mrs. Priest wants her store bill paid. Well we have only 2 cents in cash. I owe Mrs. M. M. Couper 5 cents for a post. I owe 25 cents for box rent so if they declare me bankrupt they will only get about 1 cent on every $10." Jan 26; "Cold and foggy with snow falling. There is frost all over the bushes and trees. Winter has set in again and our hope of having some nice weather is gone. I wonder when it will warm up. Spent most of day reading and sitting around but spent a couple of hours getting wood. Forest supervisor Duthie and forest ranger Hickel came over to see if we had vacated the place yet. Well we haven't and won't until we are ready." Feb 5 ". I went to Piedmont today and brought home some groceries from mama's. I beat Jim 2 games of chess out of 3. We got a letter from the pension bureau which turned down our pension. It was turned down by Ward C. Finney the same man who has ignored our requests for a mineral examination on our claims. He is assistant secretary of inteior. He is a hand and glove in with the Forest Service trying to get us off our place. He absolutely ignored our evidence for our pension alone. I shall always remember Edward C. Finney also Forest supervisor Duthie."Feb 18; ". I went to P. today and got some more flour and a can of salmon. Mrs. M. M. Couper pounced on me and demanded her two nickles for the Posts. I told her that the publishers were asking us for the $2 for it and she admitted she had gotten her money back from them. She sure must have felt like a nickle. She talked for 15 minutes to save her face. Mrs. Couper is Scotch and so she can't let any money get away from her if she can help it. Well I bet she won't be so quick to bum some one the next time." Feb 15; ". I don't know what to do. If I get a job from the Hornstake I will be here working all summer and if I don't we won't have anything to live on. We haven't any money to go away on or any job to go to so we are up in the air. Mother has $50 coming from Mr. Over of the State University William H. Over was a collector and curator of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History of South Dakota for an Indian Painting also $30 from Duhamel's. If we get this we may go."Feb 23; ". I don't see what we can do for ourselves by staying here but I don't see where we can go with our any money. We can't stay here and live off the folks however so we must go somewhere or else must get a job around here. I do not want to get a job here because it will make me give up any idea of getting into aviation which is my ambition…. " Feb 25; ". I went to town today. Mama said that she and Jim were going away and that she would like to have us stay in her house and look after the school teachers. She said we could have the $20 a month rent too. I don't like the idea vary well but I guess it is that or nothing."Mar 9. He notes the Cristero War or Cristero Rebellion that was ravaging in Mexico at the time Mar.18. His last entry is in early April: ". We got our pension. The $20 a month one with $197 back."Apr1. We hear no more from Samuel Peyton. The illustration comprises 21 fine figures the first 13 by Eisen and the last 8 by Pasquier. Each volume contains two parts with separate title pages except for the supplement volume which contains in addition to Diderot's essay the parts of the work that had been cut by Prévost. The first complete English edition dates from 1748. Contemporary full marbled brown calf bindings. Smooth spines elegantly decorated. Red morocco title labels and tan morocco volume labels only volume VII of the supplement published in 1761 in uniform binding has a black morocco volume label. Triple gilt fillet frame on boards. A tear worming to head of volume I. A stripped lower edge to volume 1. A small lack to head of volume II. Tailcap of volume V partly missing with upper joint cracked at foot and slight lack of leather. Lower joint of volume VI split at head same for volume VII. Most corners bumped. Despite defects a handsome copy in a quality binding. Clarisse Harlove is the second great novel published by the author after the immense success of Pamela; it is again a sentimental novel whose virtuous heroine finds herself constrained by her family to marry a noble ugly and obese man against her will. She will flee with one Lovelace the very type of elegant villainous and deceitful libertine who desires to constrain her body and soul leading her into social and moral decline but this will be without counting on Clarisse's virtuous qualities. If the novel from a modern perspective suffers from sentimentalism and length it nonetheless remains true that the construction of the plot the dramatic twists and the psychology will durably mark European literature. Diderot will proclaim this in his Éloge de Richardson and numerous authors will claim it or undergo its influence: Rousseau Jane Austen Choderlos de Laclos. The work will enjoy immense success and even if due to its length the novel is little read today it remains one of the most emblematic books of 18th century literature. It should be noted that Diderot's essay in addition to the praise given to Richardson is a true plea for a new realistic literature his thesis joining that which he wrote for the theater. This book was published at the outbreak of war in 1939. It details the Air-Raid Precautions Act 1937 and The Civil Defence Act 1939. It goes on to give details of the technical applications of the act and detailed plans for the construction of bomb shelters. A fascinating book which shows little sign of wear. The off-white cloth covers are slightly dirty but the book is remarkably well preserved. "When this book was written there was still peace - although most people felt that it hung on a slender thread. Since then war has broken out and the need for protection has become even more urgent. The first chapter of this book deals with legal provisions. The Civil Defence Act 1939 and the Air Raid Precautions Act 1937 are not superceded in any way by the emergency laws passed by Parliament during the first few days of war. The standard of protection has been fixed by the Government and has been set out in a number of official publications. At present there is no reason to believe that this standard will be altered in any way and Chapters 2 to 12 which contain a description of all that the technician should know of Civil Protection will enable him to give assistance not only in the more usual cases but also where incidental problems require special attention. The most important document for the technician is the Revised Code for 'Air Raid Shelters for Persons working in Factories Mines and Commercial Buildings' which was published by the Government at the end of August 1939. We are gratified that a great many of the suggestions made previously in our analysis of the Government standards in 'The Architect's Journal' of June 1 and 8 have been incorporated. The text of the Code together with the texts of those other Government publications which are of direct importance to the technician has been reproduced in full. Special attention is drawn to Chapter 11 which deals with public shelters. The knowledge of how to arrange public shelters so that they fulfill their obligations that is to say that they are within easy distance of everybody who may be in need of protection is not widely spread and this chapter has been particularly devoted to this subject. Many arguments have been put forward for and against bomb-proof shelters and while we do not want to enter into this controversy the fact may have to be faced that sooner or later bomb-proof shelters may become essential in certain cases. Therefore all available material for the design of such shelters has been collected and formulae for the thickness of slabs walls etc. have been set out. The collecting of these formulae was simplified by the publication by the Government in the middle of June 1939 of Handbook No 5 which gives certain valuable data. Some of the graphs and formulae given in the Handbook have been reproduced. It was found to be most practicable to present the facts in the following manner :- In Chapter 13 the main actions of bombs have been set out while Chapter 14 deals with the incidental effects in alphabetical order. Chapter 15 describes the various types of bomb-proof shelters. These Chapters and particularly the tables at the end of Chapter 13 should enable any engineer to design bomb-proof shelters if he is called upon to do so."
