‎ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND MD USA. Very Good. 1933. On offer is a super charming original 1933 - 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young United States Navy midshipman. Only 20 years old at the beginning of his writings in this 5 year book the author Saverio Filippone born May 23rd 1913; died 2005 Class of 1937 will go on to serve his country with distinction as a submarine commander in World War II and then remarkably again serve in both Korea ad Vietnam. The diary will be of particular interest to collectors and historians of naval life and education and the men and women attracted to life serving in the Navy will find an interesting and unusual narrative here in many ways. The diary is sporadically used in 1933 very much so in 1934 and 1935 and then less so in 1936 and is comprised of mostly personal entries typical of a young man such as parties girls travelling and of course the many entries that have to do with his cruises and academy related activities and education making for a fascinating look at what life was like as a midshipmen in the 30's at the naval academy especially as we know that this young man becomes a commander of distinction in serving his country. Readers may also be surprised at the level of intimacy Saverio shares with his diary especially regarding some of the women he has relationships with; he is unusually candid and revealing of his emotions for many men. Intriguingly the gift inscription states: "Saverio Filippone from the only one xmas '33". The book has a vinyl front cover with a Victorian illustration the book lacks the locking clasp part but is otherwise VG. BIO NOTES: Events related to this officer: Submarine USS Tarpon 175 19 Jun 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone leaves base for her 11th war patrol. She was ordered to perform lifeguard duty in the Truk area. 8 Aug 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone ended her 11th war patrol when she returns to base. 31 Aug 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone leaves base for her 12th and final war patrol. Once again she was assigned to lifeguard duty in the Truk area. 14 Oct 1944 USS Tarpon Lt.Cdr. S. Filippone ended her 12th and final war patrol at Pearl Harbor. Tarpon was now assigned to training duties on the U.S. east coast. Her Scientific Advocacy And Journalism Included Astronomy Columns In The Toronto Star "With The Stars" 1951-81 And The Journal Of The Royal Astronomical Society Of Canada "Out Of Old Books" 1946-65. She Was Considered A "Great Scientist And A Gracious Person" Over A Career Of Sixty Years. After Graduating From Mount Holyoke Hogg Received A Fellowship For Graduate Study At Harvard Observatory In The Fall Of 1926 With The Help Of Dr. Cannon.3 Once At Harvard Hogg Worked With Dr. Harlow Shapley The Director Of The Graduate Program In Astronomy. Hogg Received Her Master's Degree In 1928 And Her Doctoral Degree In 1931 Both From Radcliffe College As Harvard Refused To Award Graduate Degrees In Science To Women At The Time. For Her Advances In Astronomy Hogg Received Honorary Doctoral Degrees From Six Canadian And U.S. Universities Including Mount Holyoke College And The University Of Toronto. While Completing Her Doctoral Degree Hogg Taught Astronomy At Mount Holyoke And At Smith College. After Graduation She Moved To Victoria British Columbia Where She Began Research At The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Hogg Began Taking Photos Of Variable Stars With The 72-Inch Reflecting Telescope Cataloguing The Cyclical Changes In The Brightness Of The Variable Stars. At The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory Hogg Found 132 New Variable Stars In The Globular Cluster Messier 2. Hogg Published This Groundbreaking Work In Astronomical Catalogues That Are Still Used Today. Notably Hogg Accomplished All Of This As A Volunteer Assistant To Her Husband As The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory Would Not Offer Her A Job. In 1935 Hogg Moved To The University Of Toronto After Her Husband Had Received A Job Offer To Work At The David Dunlap Observatory.6 For Her First Year There Hogg Continued Her Work Photographing Globular Clusters Amassing Thousands Of Photographs Which She Used To Identify Many Thousands Of Variable Stars. She Published Catalogue Of 1116 Variable Stars In Globular Clusters In 1939 The First Of Three Catalogues She Completed With A Fourth In The Works At The Time Of Her Death. In Addition To Her Work On Variable Stars In Globular Clusters Hogg Used The Period-Luminosity Relationship Of Cepheid Variable Stars Discovered By Henrietta Swan Leavitt In 1908 To Enhance The Understanding Of The Milky Way Galaxy's Age Size And Structure. During The Late 1930S Hogg Became One Of The First Astronomers To Travel And Work Around The World To Advance Her Research As The Globular Clusters She Was Observing Were Best Seen From The Southern Hemisphere. From 1939 To 1941 Hogg Returned To America To Serve As The President Of The American Association Of Variable Star Observers 1939-1941 And The Acting Chair Of Mount Holyoke's Astronomy Department 1940-1941. Modern boards. 41 cm Ref: 195447107 Condition: Tasteless modern binding. The back is soiled and on it is written 'stemmata regum'. Book plate on the front pastedown. Small piece at the tip of the upper corner of the last leaf torn off Note: The German classical scholar Christoph Gottlob Sachse 1714-1806 or Christophorus Saxius came in 1735 to Leipzig to study classical philology. In 1745/46 he made a long tour through the West of Germany and the Netherlands followed by his first big publication 'Lapidum vetustorum epigrammata' 1746. He decided to remain in the Netherlands where he became the teacher of the son of De Back the secretary to the Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic William IV and after 1751 secretary of the grandson of Caspar Burmannus in Utrecht. In 1755 Saxius was appointed professor of Rhetoric and Greek at the University of Utrecht which he remained until his death at the age of 92. He published much on epigraphy archaeology ancient history and he produced in 1778 an edition of the 'Catonis Disticha'. Useful as they were in their time they are now forgotten. He made one important contribution to scholarship his 'Onomasticon literarium sive Nomenclator praestantissimorum omnis aevi scriptorum praecipue Graecorum et Latinorum' Utrecht 1759. This biographic and bibliographic work developed into an eight volume work of reference 1775-93. It is praised by Brunet being an 'Ouvrage d'une grande utilité pour les recherches relatives à l'histoire littéraire'. Brunet 5175 On Saxius NNBW 8 1281/2; ADB 30 460/1 § In an epilogue called 'Lectori Historiae veteris studioso' to this edition of 1783 Saxius explains why he produced his 'Tabulae Genealogicae sive stemmata Deorum Regum Principum Virorum illustrium'. His aim is educational. He confesses that he has learned from long experience that students doze off listening to dull voices and lectures but that they revive when shown something more concrete. He condemns teachers who are not willing to explain matters with the use of maps so reducing the appetite of their pupils. The easiest way to avoid errors is to visualize and so elucidate complicated matters on tables on which all information is available in brief at one glance. This book once belonged to the Dutch physician botanist and writer and pioneer fighter for gay rights Lucien Sophie Albert Marie von Römer 1873-1965. He often wrote about homosexuality and argued that it was an innate characteristic. He practiced medicine in the Dutch East Indies later Indonesia in his later life. His views parallel those of psychiatrist Sigmund Freud on this topic. Lucien von Römer was born in 1873 in Kampen Overijssel. He studied medicine at Leiden University and the University of Amsterdam and received his medical license in 1903. He went on to practice as a neurologist. Von Römer was particularly interested in homosexuality and worked in Berlin with the prominent sexologists Magnus Hirschfeld and Albert Moll. He was a regular contributor to Hirschfeld's journal 'Jahrbuch für sexuelle Zwischenstufen' Journal for Sexual Transitions; his first article a profile of King Henry III of France was published in 1902. In addition to homosexuality Von Römer also wrote for the 'Jahrbuch' about androgyny hermaphroditism and the reception of Arnold Aletrino's works. In 1908 he published an anthology of Friedrich Nietzsche's writings on homosexuality in Hirschfeld's 'Zeitschrift für Sexualwissenschaft'. In the same year he submitted a postdoctoral dissertation that argued that homosexuality was innate but it was rejected by the University of Amsterdam on the grounds that it was 'in conflict with morality and offensive to others'. Von Römer left the Netherlands and joined an expedition to New Guinea as a botanist in 1910. He discovered numerous plants on the expedition some of which were named after him. He settled in the Dutch East Indies in 1913 where he worked as a public health specialist and a regional government physician. In 1921 he married Eugenie Gallois a pianist and had a son. After retiring he continued to practice psychiatry in Malang in Indonesia where he died in 1965 at the age of 92. His preeminence is summarized masterly in the blurb text of the dustjacket of the intellectual biography of Anthony Grafton 'Joseph Scaliger A study in the history of classical scholarship' Oxford 1983/93. 'In an age of great classical scholars Joseph Scaliger was the greatest. His early work as an editor of Latin texts won the attention of the learned throughout Europe and contained technical innovations that remain of interest. His later work as the founder of the discipline of historical chronology involved him in the superhuman task of trying to reconstruct every sophisticated calender and to date every significant event in human history. Along the way he emended hundreds of corrupt passages in classical texts collated scores of manuscripts quarrelled with dozens of his rivals failed humiliatingly . to prove that he was descended from the della Scala of Verona - and dashed off in his spare time works that would remain standard for centuries like Gruter's Corpus of inscriptions the publication of which Scaliger oversaw. His work was perhaps most important in that it showed that the Bible and the events it recorded could not be understood except in the light of the writings of the pagans and the methods of classical scholarship'. In 1593 he filled the vacant place left by Justus Lipsius at the young the University of Leiden. 'His disinclination to lecture was duly respected; all that the authorities at Leyden desired was his living and inspiring presence in that seat of Protestant learning' Sandys p. 202. On this honorary post he produced works that made him immortal and lend lustre to Leyden and its Universtiy. Scaliger spent the last 16 years of his life in Leiden as the jewel of the University. There he enjoyed also the friendship of a great numbers of pupils and admirers. To his circle belonged H. Grotius D. Heinsius the Dousae and in France Du Thou and Casaubon. Scaliger died in the arms of his favourite pupil and closest friend Daniel Heinsius who wrote a funerary oration for him. The correspondence reflects his relations with contemporary scholars and scientists and the scholarly circles in which he moved. He corresponded with Salmasius Heinsius Casaubon Lindenbrogius Gruter Lipsius Labbaeus and many others. Scaliger had inherited from his father Julius Caesar Scaliger a profound belief in his descent from the noble Veronese family Della Scala. The correspondence opens with a 58 page letter addressed to Dousa and is on this matter 'De vetustate gentis Scaligerae in qua & de vita utriusque Scaligeri'. Paper yellowing Note: The greatest contribution of the classical scholar of Italian origin Julius Caesar Scaliger Giulio Bordone della Scala 1484-1558 to the history of classical scholarship is of course his brilliant son Joseph Justus Scaliger. In 1524 he moved to France where he became physician to bishop Antonio della Rovere of Agen and where his son Joseph Justus was born in 1540 the same year in which his 'De causis linguae latinae libri tredecim' was published. This work is among his most important philological works. § A far more comprehensive work is Scaliger's 'Poetices libri septem' posthumously published at Lyon in 1561 which offers his generically organized classifications of kinds of ancient and modern Latin poems and comparative criticism of ancient and modern poets recognizing the rivalry and imitation in Greek Roman and modern writings. It is 'one of the earliest modern attempts to treat the art of poetry in a systematic manner. Here he deals with the different kinds of poems and the various metres together with figures of speech and turns of phrase criticises all the Latin poets ancient and modern and institutes a detailed comparison between Homer and Virgil to the distinct advantage of Virgil while the epics of Homer are regarded as inferior to the 'Hero and Leander' of Musaeus. He also declares Seneca inferior to none of the Greeks in majesty. He makes all literary creation depend ultimately on judicious imitation'. His preeminence is best understood from the entry which the French classicist Isaac Casaubon made in his diary after the death of this great man: 'Exstincta est illa seculi nostri lampas lumen litterarum decus Galliae ornamentum unicum Europae'. His erudition was considered by his contemporaries to be a wonder of mankind. 'He not only exhibits a remarable aptitude for the soundest type of textual emendation; but he is also the founder of historical criticism. His immortality was further ensured by the publication after his death of the Prima Scaligerana a collection of table conversations in which observations of great scientific value can be found and which is an exeptional and much-quoted source in the historiography of the late humanistic republic of letters. The complicated history of this Prima Scaligerana and Secunda Scaligerana is explained best online at The Warburg Institute research/projects/scaliger/scaligerana. The table conversations were originally penned down by a friend of Scaliger the medicin François de Saint-Vertunien Franciscus Vertunianus. This work was edited by the French classical scholar Tanneguy Lefebvre or in Latin Tanaquillus Faber 1615-1672. In the short preface to this work M. Lefebvre explains also why this edition was called: Prima Scaligerana. That was because the edition of another collection of Scaligerana which was published a few years earlier 1666 & 1668 contained material of a later date than his edition. The Dutch printer Pieter Elzevier one of the last Elzeviers of this celebrated family of booksellers publishers and printers of the 17th century published in 1670 this reissue of the Groningen edition of 1669.
