‎NEW JERSEY TO SAN FRANCISCO UNITED STATES USA. Very Good. 1908. On offer are a fascinating pair 2 of handwritten letters surrounding a cross-country trip taken in the first decade of the 20th century. The two letters totalling 22 pages are a fascinating look at early 20th Century America and most interestingly a chilling account of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake that killed about 3000 people died and destroyed over 80% of the city that occurred two years before the author arrived in the city. The letters were written by Will H. Payne who was writing to his wife back in England. The letters begin with Will already in San Francisco. This first one dates February 24th 1908. In it Will tells his wife about the trip from Washington D.C. to California. His descriptions of the towns along the way across America is wonderful especially his words on the wild city of New Orleans. From New Jersey Will goes onto Philadelphia Washington D.C. North and South Carolina Georgia Alabama Mississippi Texas Arizona and then onto California. In each new state he writes both of observations seen from the train and also facts of the state that he is in history geography landscape names etc. The second letter is on March 21st 1908 and Will gives an extraordinary detailed and thoroughly fascinating account of the recent history of San Francisco. Most notably he writes at length about the 1906 Earthquake that ravaged the city and killed so many. He also writes about how they are trying to clean up the city and describes the buildings still left standing. He describes the city as he sees it now and the neighborhoods and monuments that make up the beautiful city as it rebuilds: the conservatory the museum the harbor and the Italian fishing village. Included as well is a postcard written by Will in Idaho Falls Idaho on August 30 1908 to his wife. The content is simple writing that he loves his wife and will write to her the next day. The postcard’s picture is of a horse drawn wagon crossing in front of a house with a dry dusty hill rising behind the caravan. It has “35 - Mountain Express” printed on the bottom. These really are incredible letters both in their content and historical value. Each page of the letter has writing on its back and front and measures about 7 1/2” x 10”. The letters are unbound and each page came in their own plastic sleeve and numbered. The pages are in fair to good shape exhibiting little wear or discoloration. The handwriting is clear and readable throughout in black ink showing little to no smudging or consistent fading. OVERALL: VG. Text: “February 24th 1908. 138th Noe Street San Francisco California U.S.A. My Dear Wife.After catching the train from New Jersey at 8 P.M. on the 10th inst. I got as far as Philadelphia which is in Pennsylvania State at 10:45 the same night. There I changed and caught the 11:32 P.M. to Washington Virginia arriving there at 3:30 next morning and as soon as it was daylight I had a walk around the place saw the Capital where the congress sits and it is a most wonderful building…….“The next state is South Carolina or Palmetto State one of the thirteen original states. It’s length is 280 miles. It’s principle river is Savannah navigable for 130 miles. It’s mineral products much the same as North Carolina. I did not see many white people. Nearly all Nig-rs he spells it out and they lived in very rude huts made of logs and mud and thatched roofs and the place abounds with Malaria fever….The river Alabama which we crossed by a very frail structure called a bridge which shook very much I am sure its quite a wonder the whole concern don’t collapse and the general aspect improves the further south. For miles I traveled and could only see vast stretches of Palm and ferns with just a few native huts dotted here and there and the only specks of civilization is to be seen only at stations and there the major portion of the people are colored. Then we only just skirted the border of Florida and the smell of oranges were beautiful but the scenery much the same.The place is infested with thieves around the docks at Mobile and you can see them walking about with slouch hats and belts full of cartridges with a revolver in their holster by their side. It is said that if any one get out of the train and go to a saloon for a drink he comes out plus his purse and valuables and got to put your hands up with a gun in your face. It’s not necessary for me to say that I did not get out there although I got out most stations for a stretch. We stayed there about 1 hour….It is now evening and nearing half of the railway journey and at 9:40 P.M. we ran into New Orleans Station where I was transferred by company bus to a station the other side of town and found upon arrival that I had to wait until 11:55 A.M. next day Thursday 13th instant.Saw the old market place French and is very curious. Also the ovens a place something like a house covered with marble slabs. In the wall are small doors iron. Each of these doors open into a small recess into which people were buried as it were the coffins were put in the door closed and then bricked up and a slab bedded bearing their name etc. But the way which the garbage and filth were run into the gutters in the street which were about 18” thick deep did not appeal to me as being healthy in fact I thought it was very disgusting. The streets are very wide there being five sets of electric train lines down the middle and raised up about 6 inches with grass growing between and there being a space between the train lines and the curb of about 25 feet for ordinary traffic and after buying some hand and bread and some oranges I wandered any way to the station…….P.S. I will write about San Francisco next week and tell George I will write him a letter at the same time. Will.”; “March 21st 08. My Dear Wife I am now going to give you a description of this city. San Francisco or the doomed city as it is generally known in America has been destroyed either by earthquake or fire and fire alone seven times.April 18th 19th and 20th 1906 was the fateful date when after the quake which wrecked many fine buildings and killed a great many persons there followed the fire which could not be stopped on account of the water pipes all being broken. The fire broke out in several parts of the city however the main line of the burning buildings started near the water front or about half mile from it and was about two miles long and swept everything before it. Men tried to check it by blowing up some of the intervening property but to no avail the raging flames simply had to take their course until they reached what is known as Van Ness Avenue which road being very wide coupled by the wind reversing was then held in check otherwise there would not have been a house standing that part of the town in which I live and was saved the part too is all wooden houses. People were running about frantic some seeking their children children seeking their parents others trying to save as much of their belongings as possible. A great many running in wild order to the parks and other open spaces in order to escape the flames. A great many also were caught in the burning mass unable to get away like rats in a trap. They were doomed to die the terrible way possible. Some stood at the windows of the burning houses imploring the soldiers to shoot them. Mothers fathers and children ran out of their homes and in many cases got separated and never saw each other any more. There are several people here which lost their children in the flames and lots of young children who lost either one or both of their parents. ‎1879 & 1883 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARIES FROM PROMINENT LOCAL FAMILY DETAILING GENEALOGY AND LOCAL HISTORY OF COOPERSTOWN NEW YORK‎

‎Cooperstown Otsego County New York. Good. 1879. Leatherette. On offer are the original 1879 and 1883 manuscript diaries historically relevant to the history of Cooperstown New York. While there is no indication of authorship specified in the books there are enclosed a number of ephemeral pieces that suggest the owner was "William A. Doubleday". There is also an 1870 promissory note with the names Sally Doubleday Elizabeth Doubleday and Abner Doubleday. Casual research affirms the family's connection to Cooperstown and we suggest but cannot confirm that the Abner Doubleday mentioned herein is the noted inventor of baseball. Further research notes near the listing's end explain. Historians and collectors of the region and era will no doubt have enough info to confirm. In the 1879 diary there are entries until May then blank. The 1883 diary has sporadic ledger type entries. Entries include historical mentions of local events and William mentions on numerous occasions the trial and hanging of Myron A. Buel who murdered 14 year old Catherine A. Richards. We learn in 1883 diary three members of his family die one being his sister. Here are snippets: 1879 "Does not storm. Snow deep. Sheriff sale at Walter Van Horner. Did not sell. Lenike brought Julia and Harry from park Central. Carries her home….Went to town. Commenced snowing. Buel trial commenced today. Swearing in Jurors. Snows all night……Snowing this morning. Snow deep. Got to town to hear Buel trial. Went to the bank on R.R. business. Fix for selling bonds….Warmer. Does not storm. Go to town to hear Buel trial. Frank goes with me. Go after Calista she does not come….Go to town. Cold but more pleasant. Buel trial progresses. Paid to Tyler $5.00 cash by check on first National. Calista comes up with me. Hear of the death of Mrs. Lathrop….Very cold. Go to town to sign town bonds. Finished them up. Went in the Hall a few minutes. Dr. Bassett was being sworn. Got a Utica Herald. Read the Buel trial….Cold and blustery. Went to town to hear judges charge on Buel case. Frank sick. Gone to bed. Uncle Russell called in evening. All before May. There are many names are mentioned some in this one are; Newkirk Lathrop Dr. Barrett Sam R. Fay Chapin Dr. Blodgett E. Hubel Dr. Wadsworth Grover Pennington Potter E. W. Warren and more. Each of the diaries measures about 3" x 6". They are in poor condition but pages look good. Research notes: Whether the Abner Doubleday as mentioned in the diary may have been the famous Civil War General Abner Doubleday who is believed to have invented baseball in the Cooperstown area we are not positive but this one online source provides this: "This is the hardest fact to explain is that the inventor of baseball was Abner Doubleday. There is some genealogical evidence that a second Abner Doubleday a cousin of the famous general lived in Cooperstown at the time in question. The namesake Abner Demas Doubleday was born in Otsego County on March 9th 1829 and lived in Cooperstown area until moving to Kalamazoo Michigan following the Civil War. Additionally according to Grave's own words Graves was a man who brought this investigation to light in his second letter to the commission a second Doubleday cousin John also lived in Cooperstown and was a ballplayer. Perhaps it was one of these alternate Doubleday's who diagrammed a new game that day in Cooperstown and over time Graves confused him with his better-known cousin." As stated before the handwritten note is from 'an' Abner D. Krebs was a 22-year old man who went to California to seek his fortune spending several weeks in Los Angeles 5 months at Red Mountain Ranch near Fallworth California decades later famed Frank Capra would own the estate and finally another month in L.A. before coming home. The writer was a school teacher so collectors and historians of Southern California Americana will finds his letters are well-written and informative. Researchers will also appreciate the these letters comprise the entire trip to California from the first letter talking about the trip to the last letter making arrangements to come back home. Most are addressed to his father but there are others addressed to his brother and sisters. This travel journal is typed likely from handwritten notes and likely prepared for publication though we cannot find any such publications. Brooks was a noted speaker and casual research finds numerous mentions of his holding lectures about his various trips from the early 1900s through the 1920s. He has a wonderful narrative style moving from sophisticated enthusiast to folksy world wise traveller. This manuscript is titled: "Some People That I Have Met. Odds and Ends from a Traveler's Notebooks." There are 27 typed pages. There are some holograph corrections. Measures about 8½" x 11". On offer is an 1868 legal manuscript document relating to the appointment of Power of Attorney for the recently widowed New Brunswick Canada resident Ms. Charlotte LeBaron Hazen Smith 1809-1893. Charlotte Smith widow of Henry Bowyer Smith 1800-1868 appoints Herries Farquhar & Co. Sir Walter Rockcliff Farquhar 1810-1900 and others as Power of Attorney. Smith signs the document beside an affixed seal. There is a handwritten note by New Brunswick lawyer judge and politician William B. Kinnear who died about a month later. Kinnear notarizes the document writing that he is "a Public Notary in and for the Province of New Brunswick by lawful authority.do hereby certify that I was present and did see Charlotte LeBaron Smith sign seal and deliver the aforgoing instrument." The primary focus of the contract is dealing with a policy from The Standard Life Assurance Company of Edinburgh. Quite interesting early Canadian legal document from a well to do family in New Brunswick. BIO NOTES: Charlotte LeBaron Hazen was the widow of Henry Bowyer Smith Collector of Customs St. John New Brunswick who was the son of Charles Douglass Smith the colonial governor and administrator. They had one child Sarah Elizabeth Smith 1829-1884 who married. Rev. Charles Lee 1826- 1873. ‎EGREMONT MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1862. On offer is an original superb relic of the Civil War and an incredibly detailed historical document with a riveting narrative being the journal of William. B. Stark beginning with his enlistment July 21st 1862 until April 13th 1865 when he relates the details of Appomattox and Lee's surrender and the jubilation of the troops. Thusly his entire tour in the Civil War. Stark was from Egremont Massachusetts near the New York state border in western Massachusetts. Mr. Stark served in the 34th Regiment Infantry Massachusetts Volunteers. This is one of the most detailed writings of one man's service we have ever read. Stark took copious notes and left no details unmentioned from a detailed listing of every battle and engagement his fellow soldiers officers kit and clothing foods eaten etc. etc. He never fails to mention names and Mr. Stark to history's benefit writes profusely. There is tremendous battle content with detailed explanations of terrain weather and conditions. He describes the mood of the men the affect of the conditions and writes very well too. Extensive research can find no evidence that this was ever published or made public in any way save for an annotation that Stark's commentary was partially used regarding his chilling telling of the Battle of Hanging Rock. The old mimeos are in a three-ring binder. Some of the holes on a number of pages are torn but is otherwise in very good condition. Bolt was a Dutch adventurer who worked for the East India Company. He was later deported to England where he wrote his book which remains important documentation on 18th-century India. Brougham wrote this letter to clarify the terms of a mortgage and to note an upcoming visit he will take to Brougham where he will settle the matter. Letter measures 4-1/2x7-1/4 inches. One page folded with writing on two pages. Age toning noted and small folds but otherwise VG. William Brougham 2nd Baron Brougham and Vaux known as William Brougham until 1868 was a British barrister and Whig politician. In 1868 he succeeded his elder brother as second Baron Brougham and Vaux according to a special remainder in the letters patent and was able to take a seat in the House of Lords. William Brougham was the younger brother of Henry Peter Brougham 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux Lord Chancellor of England 1778-1868. Brougham was appointed a Master in Chancery in 1831 which he remained until the following year. In 1831 he was also returned to Parliament for Southwark a seat he held until 1835. ‎DETROIT MI PHILIPPINES GUAM CHINA SOUTH PACIFIC. Good. 1937. On offer is the original manuscript personal diary of William Clinton Newmarch from Detroit Michigan. He kept this diary from 1937 until 1939 during his service in the United States Navy. Newmarch made daily entries detailing his service in a number of areas of the Pacific and Asia including the Philippines Guam China Vietnam and many small Pacific Islands. Newmarch was a 3rd class Seaman and worked as a radio operator on a number of ships which he records. He worked in the installation and maintenance of equipment as well as the sending and receiving of messages. He went through Radio School twice with one entry in 1937 stating that he and two others had been removed from the school. He completes his radio training in early 1938. Newmarch also outlines daily life aboard the ships. Newmarch's diary discusses many personal details of his service including romances his personal feelings toward the people he works with and his changing feelings about his life in service. Newmarch also makes many entries about his leave and what he occupies himself with on liberty time. He talks about training inspections which he loathes uniform issues inoculations frequent illness the duties he performs and the other people he is serving with. Here are some snippets: Feb 3 1937: "En route to Guam 180 meridian party held. Still sore." April 10 1939: "Sulu Island. Good steaming. Hope to anchor tonight which we did on this unholy part of the island." Mar 2 1937: "Alongapso. Practiced typing receiving and sending US mail in letter room. Bill Haggerty answered it. 10-12 Sea watch anchored at 0130." Oct 14 1937: "Receiving ships. Still have 'head' detail should be proficient in that type of duty by now." Dec 14 1937: "USS Penag sank by jap.1 killed 18 missing- Japs apologize." May 5 1938: "Black Hawk At sea.Watch from 0100 to 0730 tired. The heat is getting terrible no wind at all - man overboard fire and rescue and as I write a fire in the sick bay." June 3 1938: "Parang fired today quite an experience went off smoothly got a good scare though." Jun 21 1938: "Swaton China. What a day for this part- planes and bombs all morning then the destroyers arrived. Chinese fired not a single shot in opposition." Jan 25 1938: "Radio school. Carite. Still bad had to wait too long to see Dr.- left. Routine school. Weight 129lbs new low. In early had to get up too many times during the night." Later entries describe Newmarch's hospitalization for anaerobic dysentery. He becomes quite ill and his weight drops down to 119lbs during his lengthly hospitalization. June 14 1938: "Underway. Left Cota Boto for Saigon. the tactical signals snowed me under got hell from all hands dread getting up. Sleep is a blissful escape from troubles- like drink." Jan 5 1939: "Mariveler Bay. Out for more practice today. Out of freshwater and butter someone put salt water in naps." Feb 15 1939: "Finished Antennae - I hope. I threw aux together." Feb 17 1939: "Manilia Ship inspected by Captain passed. In dress whites." June 27 1939: "Swaton China mission. Japs that do come here are very peaceful good people- cannot understand why we stay. No patrolling now just available for Chinese police." July 14 1939: ".fog delayed us. Passed a mine that was machine gunned as we passed." June 13 1939: "Swaton China. Usual day rain. Liberty and watch list all fouled up. Jap plane dropped 4 bombs at 1825." Jan 2 1937: "In early. Got final word from exec. No leave. If I had the nerve I would desert." Jan 10 1938: "Radio School Carite. Routine school. Tibbitts talked to Mari-Lynn and broke us up. Movies in." May 15 1938: "Southern Islands. Sunday ashore at 1000 walked say cockfights took pictures lost liberty pass. movies." Newmarch often stayed in a hotel while on leave to get off the ship for a few nights. Some of his entries report drinking with the locals at bars and things "getting a bit tight". May 23 1938: "Parang SRBP all day.it seems good to get out in the air. The chief and I aren't hitting it off so well. He expects wonders and I am not a wonder." July 23 1938: "Still no liberty quarters gold braid aboard to see if a man can be found who fouled up on the beach." Aug 28 1938: "Peking China. To winter palace. China must really have been something in her day. April 14 1939: "Parang. Held field today Kelly will run me away yet - god how he is unbearable." Newmarch makes entries regularly into this diary. For 1938 and 1939 the entries occur daily in good detail. Newmarch is also good at maintaining the diary in 1937 however on a few occasions he misses several weeks resuming his entries with notes such as being in the sick bay or June 8 1937: "Dear Diary: Because of the dropping of Cusak Calton and myself from Radio School I have neglected you." Newmarch's diary ends in late October 1939 when he returns to San Fransisco and is then transported over land by train to Detroit. The diary is written in a 6" x 4 1/2" leather over board "5-year diary".
