One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the verso some foxing; engraving preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name the title and an extract from a work. Lithograph inspired by three stanzas extracted from a poem by J. Mouret. Magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential printing of very high luxury: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but indeed to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. Marly de Roi France. Good with no dust jacket. 1867. Non-Book. On offer is a letter which was written and signed by the French dramatist Victorien Sardou 1831-1908. The letter is written to an unknown recipient. It is undated but assumed to be circa 1867. Blind embossed are the letters VS and Marly de Roi where Sardou lived this is the same place as Alexandre Dumas. The letter reads: "I thank you very much my dear neighbour I am going to take advantage of your advice. I have not answered earlier because Madame Sardou is quite unwell and for 48 hours I have not had time to think of anything other than her illness. Please accept my dear neighbour for both you and Madame de Breval my most attentive regards signed Victorien Sardou." BIO NOTES: Sardou married his benefactress Mlle Helene de Brécourt in 1858 but eight years later 1866 he became a widower. Victorien Sardou was a French dramatist. He is best remembered today for his development along with Eugène Scribe of the well-made play. He also wrote several plays that were made into popular 19th-century operas such as La Tosca 1887 on which Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca 1900 is based and Fedora by Umberto Giordano a work that popularized the fedora hat as well. We consulted the Library of Congress and British Library online catalogues but could not find any copies of this book that do include a section on Novels. This lending library established in 1819 claimed 200000 volumes in all languages. Subscribers could borrow books by mail or in person. This library claimed some 20000 English language titles in the collection. Bound in are 1st and 2nd supplements with additions through 1901. Subscriptions rates postage costs and terms are explained. The long list of complicated rules to be followed when returning books by mail indicates that 19th century postal officials had way too much time on their hands. Scarce. Inscribed on the front free endpaper "Mildred L. Wood May 30 1925 From Mrs. Villard." Fanny Garrison Villard was a co-founder with her son of the NAACP and active in women's suffrage and peace movements. She was the daughter of prominent publisher and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and the wife of railroad tycoon Henry Villard. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. William Lloyd Garrison was an American abolitionist journalist suffragist and social reformer. He is best known as the editor of the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator which he founded with Isaac Knapp in 1831 and published in Massachusetts until slavery was abolished by Constitutional amendment after the American Civil War. Father Capèce recounts in third person how he was sent to Rome to fetch the Duke of Guise so that he might deliver them from the Spanish. The Duke chose him as his confessor and he lodged in the same palace.
