Pershing's personal letterhead handwritten and dated February 23 1931. The letter reads in full "The President Washington D.C. Dear Mr. President: It was very kind of you to remember me with such a beautiful box of flowers. I appreciate very much your thoughtfulness and wish to thank you most heartily. I shall be out again in a few days. It is gratifying to see that you keep so well. With warm regards and high esteem. Yours very sincerely John J. Pershing." The edition and its extensive commentary were produced by the French protestant scholar Isaac Casaubon 1559-1614 who is the first critical commentator of Persius. Note: The stoic poet Aulus Persius Flaccus 34-62 A.D. is a representative of the imperial Latin satire. His stoic satires form one 'libellus' of 6 satires together 650 hexameters. 'They are well described as Horatian diatribes transformed by Stoic rhetoric'. 'He wrote in a bizarre mixture of cryptic allusions brash colloquialisms and forced imagery'. OCD 2nd ed. p. 805 The Stoic philosopher is in the work of Persius not a figure of fun but a wise man. § The Roman poet Juvenalis ca. 55-140 AD was the last and most influential of the Roman satirists. He 'uses names and examples from the past as protective covers for his exposés of contemporary vice and folly'. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 501 His main theme is the dissolution of the social fabric. He had a lasting influence on neolatin and vernacular writers of the Renaissance and later centuries. § A striking feature of this book is when one runs it through for the first time is the discrepancy between the space occupied by the Latin text and the French translation. Take for instance the pages 2 and 3: on p. 2 we count 56 Latin words on the opposing page 152 French words. Concise verses are transformed into long phrases in prose. The translator of these verses the French Jesuit Jérôme or Hieronymus Tarteron 1644-1720 was professor of rhetoric. He translated also the Satires Letters and the Ars Poetica of Horace. As usual with Jesuit editions here also 'le pere Tarteron a eu soin de retrancher ce qui dans ces poëts pourroit nuire aux bonnes moers' so we read in the second volume of the Nouveau Supplement au Grand Dictionnaire Historique de L. Moreri Paris 1749. Small label on the front pastedown partly removed Note: This 'Rationarium Temporum' of the French Jesuit classical scholar historian and theologian Denis Pétau latinized as Dionysius Petavius 1583-1652 is a summary made for a greater public and for the use at schools of his great work on chronology 'De Doctrina Temporum' which he published in 1627. The summarized version 'Rationarium Temporum' first appeared in 1633 and was reissued/revised/augmented many times. It was also translated into French English and Italian. In KVK we counted till 1745 22 Latin editions of which 8 were published by Cramoisy in Paris between 1633 and 1673. Petavius devoted a large part of this 'Doctrina Temporum' to the vehement criticism of 'De Emendatione Temporum' of the great protestant French scholar J.J. Scaliger 1540-1609 who is considered to be the first serious modern student of chronology. The Jesuits however considered Scaliger who lost no opportunity to attack them an heretic and a great danger to the catholic church. Their opinion on his 'De Emendatione Temporum' 1593 was that it was worthless frivolum and a pack of lies commentitum. Especially Scaliger's denial of the authenticity of the works of Dionysius Areopagita raised their anger. The Jesuits believed that Scaliger undermined the authority of the church for in the work of Dionysius Areopagita the Jesuits found proof of the 'transsubstantiation' the belief that the substance of the bread and wine used in the sacrament in the Eucharist changed into that of the body and blood of Christ. J. Bernays 'Joseph Justus Scaliger' Berlin 1855 p. 81 Dionysius Petavius a member of the Jesuits an order called colloquially 'God's Soldiers' took up the fight against Scaliger with the publication of his 'Doctrina Temporum' of 1627. Petavius was a brilliant scholar and he succeeded in correcting and improving the chronological labours of Scaliger on many points even though his criticism directed against the protestant scholar was unfair and mean. 1871 ORIGINAL FASCINATING PAIR OF MANUSCRIPTS: A HAND WRITTEN DIARY DETAILING A NEAR IDYLLIC LIFE BY THE MAN WHO PIONEERED TROUT FARMING IN AMERICA ALONG WITH A ONE PAGE TALE OF CIVIL WAR HORROR
DUTCHESS COUNTY NEW YOURK. Good. 1871. On offer is a fascinating combination including a diary from 1871 and a handwritten manuscript fragment referring to the American Civil War.This small diary measures 5 inches by 3 inches and the leather-bound volume is in good condition. It contains 365 pages plus memorandum pages and is about 53% complete. Entries are in ink until June 11 and subsequently pencil until August 29 when entries cease. There is a 2 week gap in May as well. The handwriting is small but legible. The manuscript is a single page of paper measuring about 10 inches by 8 inches. The handwriting is in pencil and covers both sides. From context a reader can see that the manuscript page is part of a larger document as text simply continues on to it and then leaves again in mid-sentence. The handwriting is in pencil and is still legible. PH Christie is the author of the diary. He lives in or near the hamlet of Cove in Dutchess County NY. Peter Harrison Christie 1838-1925 was a one of the first farmers in the United States to experiment with the hatching of fish. His business is mentioned in U.S. Senate documents New York State documents in 1870s and 1880s and in book "American Fish Culture" published in 1874. There are tantalizing references to a PH Christie of Cove Duchess County NY in a 1916 article of the American Fern Journal mentioning a farm owned by one PH Christie and some magazine articles related to fishing and trout farming. He was a secretary of the Hudson River Association for the Protection of Game and Fish since 1860s and a member of the County Committee appointed in 1877 "to stock the waters of the county and enforce laws relative to the taking of fish". P.H. Christie is also mentioned as a teacher of an evening penmanship course at Bryant Stratton Spencer & Co Business College in Cove. In the diary Christie appears to be a young man still living at home on the family farm. Entries focus around his work and describe many of the day-to-day tasks necessary to keep the farm running: ".worked all day about the house fixing the sausage machine fixing the and hanging up the fresh and cut the sausage and got the work about done . Jan 8 ". got my sleigh shoes patter made ." Jan 10. A number of entries refer to him raising chickens and the care of them: ". took care of my fowls and worked in the Hatching House with until 2 PM" Apr 9. Tucked between pages are 2 interesting articles cut out of newspapers. One is an article referring to bottles tossed into the ocean containing messages. It is undated. The second is a longer article about the headstone of a young man who died far from home. The interesting aspect of this however are the notations on the reverse. It is apparently an article extolling the virtues of some cough drops and contains dated testimonial comments. The notes are dated 1824 1825 and 1826. There is no other identifying information. The manuscript page is gripping. It recounts a sharp argument between the writer and a woman named Mary. We don't know their relationship but context indicates they are very close. She is determined to set off on an unspecified mission and he is adamant that she stay. She goes anyways promising to return by evening. When she does not return the writer goes out to find her. He approaches a nearby village where he discovers a patrol of Negro soldiers part of the Union army. He describes a scene of destruction and drunkenness and saw a woman her naked body laying face down on the ground. That however is not Mary and the page ends with him slipping away from the scene. This is an absolutely fascinating primary historical document. This is as close to real-life as any reader will get to the raw feelings of worry and fear that exist the ugly small encounters in a bloody war. Academic to readers - utterly real to this man. The diary offers a very ordinary almost bucolic picture of farming in 19th century America as Mr. Christie goes about his chores meets his friends and family and visits with neighbours. The manuscript recalls the horrors and naked violence of a war ended a mere 6 years earlier that cost 2/3 of a million lives. The contrast is stark. 1878 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG NEW JERSEY MAN SUFFERING IN AN UNHAPPY MARRIAGE
PROSPERTOWN OCEAN COUNTY NEW JERSEY. Fair. 1878. On offer is an original 1878 manuscript diary handwritten by Peter H. Emley who lived in Prospertown Ocean County New Jersey. The diary starts on June 16th and there are only 137 days that have entries but in this short period Peter details an atypical life given the problems of his marriage that he hints at as it seems that Peter and his wife have marital problems. He frequently mentions being angry and "sleeping alone." Further research shows that Peter may have had some degree of success as a "Peter H. Emley" of Lakehurst N.J. filed for a patent number on June 22nd 1905 for a Cherry Picker. We are not sure if this is the same Peter but local historians or researcher should be able to flesh this out. Here are some snippets: 1878 "June 19th Clear and pleasant. At home the entire day. Edward W. Boins moved out of my house today. Gustis Johnson and Richard Parker moved him. I met at the schoolhouse with Charles Miller John Atkinson George W. Ivins and Isaac Stewart were present for the purpose of consulting about the new schoolhouse. Miller and G. Ivins were drunk so they were nothing done
.July 7th Clear and pleasant. Started for Manchester 5 ½ o'clock A.M. Got there 9 1/3 A.M. Saw William Shinn the first one and then doctor the next and then Ornie I. Shinn and then went to church. Had a good time come back and found Susie and children there. They had been to take care of the drunken men or wife. Spent a pleasant day and night. July 18th Exceedingly warm. Commenced the yard fence. Mr. G. W. Ivins sent for me to come up to the schoolhouse. I went and signed on order of $5.00 for clearing building. We hired Susie E. SUFFOLK ENGLAND UNITED KINGDOM UK. Good. 1960. On offer is an exceptional and huge archive of material used by British journalist author and anthologist Peter Haining of Suffolk England. Included is a tremendous amount of material that offer a deep glimpse into the mind and work of one of Englands most noted and controversial figures of the 1960s and 70s. The material in this archive was most probably used for newspaper articles in the 1960s as well as the work Haining was doing with on satanic cults and sects. Haining did write a number of books on cults near the end of his life. The archive involves many different manuscript pages sometimes handwritten but mostly typed with written corrections alongside newspaper clippings and research into English-language reports on cults sects satanic rituals and more. The main portion of the archive is the typewritten manuscript containing reports on over 10 different sects cults that Haining was researching. The main title of these reports appears to be The Strange Ones: A Report on Britains Growing Underworld of Sects and Cults by Peter Haining. The synopsis suggests there are two groups of sects called the Kinky interested in black magic and other offbeat weird and sometimes dangerous cults and the Seekers who search for better lives. The chapters all typewritten with corrections and fastened with paper clips are as follows: 'From the East' the Whirling Dervishes the Disciples of Tiki and the British Polynesians 11 pages; two copies of 'The Happy People' one 8 pages long the other 7 pages. One of the copies is heavily edited while the other contains no corrections; 'The Flying Saucer People' 18 pages; 'The Exclusives' 16 pages minor edits throughout; 'The British Polynesians' 4 pages very minor edits; 'The Firewalkers'. 8 pages. fairly heavy edits; 'Wife Swop Sects' 12 pages heavily edited; 'King of the World' Homer A. Tomlinson and 'Political Leaders of the World' Elsie and Christine Klingelhoefer 8 pages almost entirely unedited; 'The Nameless Ones' 6 pages almost entirely unedited with two pastedown newspaper cuttings Malvern Cholmondeley. The research for all this include various newspaper articles relating to firewalking the Church of Odin Satanism Malvern Cholmondeley and the Association of Time and Scientific Research and two about the polygamous Eric Smith of the Full Revival and Healing Crusade almost all from the early 1960s. A brown card envelope 38cm x 30cm contains a typed signed letter with two notes in Haining's hand written from Benny Scott on headed typing paper from The Novelty Trading Co. Ltd. 53 Hanover Street Kingston Jamaica to Mr H. P. Tanner New English Library Ltd. Barnard's Inn Holborn London dated 14th June 1971 and consisting of about 150 words in which Scott says that Pocomania would have 'a good local appeal.' He suggests a non-fiction lively approach with illustrations. Scott goes on to say that all Jamaicans have heard of Pocomania but few have been present at their ritualistic meetings. He describes how he and his brothers followed the sound of their drums at night 'Once in the woods we would shower them with firecrackers shot from slingshots.' Also included: 'Pocomaniacs' 2 pages in length written in Haining's hand on ruled paper; a photocopy of 'The Court of the Profane' an early work of poetry by Aleister Crowley 4 pages double-page numbered 167-171 and 196-197; 'Cautions for Devil Worship in Britain' 3 pages typewritten with corrections; 'Chapter Ten' 5 pages dated May 1971 by Peter Haining and A. V. Sellwood typewritten with corrections; a handwritten letter from C. H. Hillingale addressed from The Red House Loughton dated January 10 1961 to the Editor of the West Essex Gazette and consisting of about 110 words with Peter Haining's newspaper article 'I Visit a Spiritualist Sanctuary' attached. The sender suggests Haining comes to his house 'I can promise him an evening that will really give him something to think about' and assures him he is not a crank and does not want publicity; the 'Occult Gazette: Truth Through Universal Eyes' 37th issue September 1963. 16 pages and a photocopy taken from 'The East Anglian Magazine' October 1960 7 pages includes 'One Good Turn' by Allan Jobson 'The Witch of Hethel' by Joyce Rushen and 'The Strange Art of Wart-Charming' by Theodora Coltman. There are newspaper cuttings relating to the death of Graham Bond the pop star who dabbled in black magic Satan worshippers a sailor's mystery death having seen the film of 'The Exorcist' a seance held to reveal the truth about the death of the actress Natalie Wood the Hellfire Club David Farrant high priest of British witchcraft and many others. A book entitled Devil Worship in Britain by Haining and A.V. Sellwood was published in 1964 and included is a 3 typed pages with handwritten corrections entitled Captions for DEVIL WORSHIP IN BRITAIN. This archive is an absolute treasure trove of fascinating and curious insights both into cults and sects around the world but also into the mind and work of one of Englands most noted and controversial anthropologists and authors. Background: Born in Enfield Middlesex in 1940 Haining began his career as a reporter in Essex and then moved to London where he worked on a trade magazine before joining the publishing house of New English Library. Haining achieved the position of Editorial Director before becoming a full-time writer in the early 1970s. He edited a large number of anthologies predominantly of horror and fantasy short stories wrote non-fiction books on a variety of topics from the Channel Tunnel to Sweeney Todd and also used the pen names "Ric Alexander" and "Richard Peyton" on a number of crime story anthologies. Haining became one of Britain's leading authorities on horror and particularly on early Gothic and the classic English ghost story. In the 1970s when 19th-century Gothic fiction was hard to find Haining's compilations were often the only available source of such material for the general reader. In the Seventies he wrote three novels including The Hero 1973 which was optioned for filming. In two controversial books Haining argued that Sweeney Todd was a real historical figure who committed his crimes around 1800 was tried in December 1801 and was hanged in January 1802. However other researchers who have tried to verify his citations find nothing in these sources to back Haining's claims. Strong reservations have also been expressed regarding the reliability of another of Haining's influential non-fiction works The Legend and Bizarre Crimes of Spring Heeled Jack. Malaya - Britain. Good. 1922. On offer is a fascinating collection of photo albums depicting a British family living in Malaya in the post WWI era. There are 5 albums in the group. Four cover the period 1922 - 1925. They are approximately 12 inches by 9 inches in size landscape layout and contain 60 pages each. In terms of completeness they are respectively 25% 66% 97% and 100 % complete. The fifth album covers the period 1938 - 39. It measures approximately 10 3/4 inches by 8 inches landscape layout. It has 22 pages and is 100% complete. The photographs are a mix of colour and black & white with the great majority being black & white. There is no identifying information about either of the individuals photographed nor the exact location of the picture. The first album contains obvious travel photographs post cards which may have been taken on the trip out from Britain. These are colour and show well-known buildings such as the Acropolis and Hagia Sophia. From several loose cards we can see that the sender and possibly the owner of all the albums is a man named "Pete". The fifth album has the name Peter John Moore given as the name of a child. One can presume this is the son of the owner of the albums - Peter Moore from Rustington England. Malaya by the 1920's was a well-established British colony. It was a key supplier of rubber and tin. The population was diverse with a significant number of Chinese moving into the colony but there was no mistaking where the British stood on the social ladder. The photographs in the 1923 - 25 albums chiefly show family scenes and individuals engaged in any number of activities - visiting a beach riding donkeys with locals assisting and countryside scenes such as one with a junk-rigged boat sailing along a canal. Others show rickshaw drivers towers and pagodaroofed buildings. Throughout the years we see a British family living a very good life in Malaya. On photo depicts a Chinese building with clearly identifiable script characters on the wall. The 1938 - 39 album follows the growth and development of a child - Peter John Moore from March 1938 through August 1939. The latter pictures were taken in England at Fleet and Selsey. This is a fine photographic record of life in a British colony during the heyday of the Empire. The frontispiece designed and executed by Joh. van den Aveele depicts a seated Amazone in the background a battle scene obviously inspired by Rubens' painting 'Battle of the Amazons' or 'Amazonomachia'. The map 24x18 depicts the Eastern Mediterranean Condition: Neat ink inscription on the front flyleaf name on the front pastedown. Some gatherings yellowing some at the end browning Note: Greek mythology situated the nation of the Amazons a tribe of virile warrior-women on the borders of the ancient world somewhere along the Danube. Homer for instance tells that their queen Penthesilea came to the help Priamus after Hector's death and that she was killed on the battlefield by Achilles. The heros Heracles campaigned against the Amazons to get their queen's girdle and Plutarch tells how king Theseus was besieged by the Amazons and how their queen Hippolyta came close to conquer Athens. Herodotus located the tribe in the land of the Sarmatae or Sauromates on the Balkan. § The Amazons a female nation skilled in the masculine art of warfare caught the fancy not only of Greek authors but also of sculptors and painters. They were very popular in art from the 7th century B.C. The female warriors wore short tunics sometimes Scythian trousers and often showed one breast. After the Renaissance the epithet 'Amazon' designated a woman on horseback and was usually offered as a compliment. Jeanne d'Arc fought like an Amazon and as proof of military might the Flemish painter Rubens painted Maria de Medici in the guise of 'Minerva Victrix' her right breast bared. The female military prowess however was also considered to pose a threat to civilization. In Germany some protestant demonologists drew a link between Amazons witches and witchcraft. There was however no consensus in modern Europe as to the historical existence of the Amazons. There were reports of Amazon societies in the New World others maintained that because Hippocrates a most reliable source spoke of them the story of Amazons could not be mere legend. In his 'De Amazonibus dissertatio' Pierre Petit or Petrus Petitus tried to prove with the help of the reports of ancient historians of old coins medals reliefs and monuments that the warrior-women of Greek myth really existed in antiquity but that the 'Amazons were never a nation of self-sufficient women. Petit points out correctly that although Hippocrates describes the Amazons on horseback wielding arms and killing men he also characterizes them as the wives of the Sauromates. In the late 17th century improved philology gave rise to skepticism with regard to the historical existence of a tribe composed exclusively of warring woman another skeptical current which Petit traces back to the Greek geographer Strabo ca. 58-25 B.C. dismissed the Amazons as legend because of the impossible male/female inversion they presented'. Wilkin 'Women Imagination and the Search for Truth in Early Modern France' Aldershot 2008 p. 48 To the 20th century the Amazons have become a topic of feminist studies subject of Broadway productions inspriration for television series and the game industry. § The French scholar Pierre Petit 1617-1687 published on medical subjects e.g. on blood transfusion canibalism the history of tears through the ages and on some classical authors. His 'De Amazonibus dissertatio' was first published in 1685 by the Parisian printer Cramoisy. A French translation was published in 1718 in Amsterdam Provenance: On the front pastedown: 'M. Johannes Sartorius'. This Sartorius also wrote on the front flyleaf: 'Petrus Petit de Amazonibus scripsit tanta diligentia quantam expectari fas erat a doctissimo viro qui nihil quod in hisce nummis ad Historiam vel ad Geographiam pertineret inexplanatum relinquere voluit'. The source of this quote has been added: 'Anselmus Banduri in Bibliotheca Nummaria p. 57'. This work was published in Hamburg in 1719. § The owner probably was Magister Johannes Sartorius 'Polyhistor und Schulmann' 1656-1729. He took his Magister degree in 1678 at the University of Wittenberg and was appointed Professor at the Gymnasium in Thorn. In 1699 he became Rector of the Gymnasium in Elbing. He left in 1704 for a professorship 'der Poesie und Beredtsamkeit' at the academic Gymnasium in Danzig.
