Rare. Late 18th century binding possibly later in full red Russia leather. Foreign binding perhaps Russian. Spine with raised bands decorated with compartmented tulip tools. Gilt title and volume label. Head and foot rolls. Decorative border on covers. All edges gilt. Headcap of volume 2 partly worn. Corners slightly bumped. A tear to the lower joint of volume 2. Despite minor defects handsome and uncommon binding the set in good condition and well-printed. Les Cent Nouvelles nouvelles is the first collection of French novellas commissioned by the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good to whom it is dedicated and who received it in 1462. It brings together one hundred very free tales by authors from the Burgundian court satirical and ribald in spirit particularly targeting women and the clergy. Pierre Champion attributes its authorship to Philippe Pot although 36 different storytellers can be identified. Their model of inspiration is clearly Boccaccio's Decameron. All the surrealists did not adopt the same behavior regarding the amorous feelings that moved them: ""Nous étions très discrets en ce qui concernait nos expériences amoureuses. Sauf bien entendu Louis qui nous tenait régulièrement au courant de ses amours. . Mes amis Tzara Breton et moi-même nous tenions à garder nos secrets."" ""We were very discreet regarding our amorous experiences. Except of course Louis who regularly kept us informed of his loves. My friends Tzara Breton and myself insisted on keeping our secrets."" The manuscript notes contain three deletions and corrections. Philippe Soupault considers his attempts questionable and even labels them as imposture distancing himself from any active participation in these practices: ""Neither Aragon nor I participated actively in the experiments called sleep sessions while Breton accepted with great interest Crevel's suggestion to engage in experiments he had discovered among friends. One had to fall asleep and recount what 'one saw'."" He recalls the results that were not always convincing: ""Crevel Desnos and Péret 'fell asleep' and despite his efforts Breton could not manage to fall asleep. Listening to the accounts of these sessions I could not help thinking that the 'sleepers' did not hesitate to simulate in order to make themselves interesting."" to such an extent that the intransigent leader of surrealism interrupted them: ""Breton realized the danger of one-upmanship and especially of Desnos's exaltation. The tale recounts the life of a young prince son of the king of the Dorides serving—within the tradition of the philosophical tale—as a pretext for the unveiling of certain truths. Chevalier d'Arcq 1721-1795 the natural son of the Count of Toulouse played a significant role in the intellectual life of the eighteenth century notably through his close interest in economic and social issues.
