This edition therefore contains works not yet published. Maupertuis specifies that it is a selection of his best works. Title pages in red and black. This edition would be reprinted in 1768 by the same publisher. A frontispiece portrait painted by Tournière and engraved by Dallé representing the author in his travel attire for Lapland. A map of the meridian arc in volume II. Numerous mathematical diagrams in volume IV. Contemporary full marbled brown sheep bindings. Raised band spines with ornament. The arrival in Paris of an albino black man provided the author with the opportunity to present his theories on fortuitous variations that explain the birth of new varieties; these ideas prefigure and contain in embryo genetic theories. The second work is a refutation of current theories on embryonic preformation. Publisher's binding in full marbled and glazed blonde calf. Spine with raised bands handsomely decorated with 4 compartmented fleurons. Red morocco title label and green morocco volume label. Triple fillet border. Roulette on the edges and inner. Gilt edges with the use of superior gold. A lack at the head of volume I; upper joint split at head and foot. Headcap of volume II torn off; upper and lower joints split at head. In volume III a lack to the upper joint at head upper and lower joints split at head. Most corners slightly bumped. Despite the defects handsome set in a quality binding with superb marbling on the boards. This deluxe publishing enterprise entirely directed by François Anne David was done by subscription and was only printed in 450 copies. It is the very example of the art book the illustration being on equal footing with the text. David neglected nothing to achieve perfection calling upon the best historians of his time and the best draughtsmen. Philosophical and poetic novel praised by Chateaubriand of whom Ballanche was a friend. Ballanche while respecting the Greek myth makes Antigone a Christian heroine. More than a novel it is a sort of prose poem in the style of Chateaubriand's Martyrs in which Ballanche substitutes vengeance for inexorable fate. The engravings bear different signatures: Parboni Franzetti Olivieri or bear none at all and sometimes the dates 1824 1827 and 1829. Printed on strong laid paper. Copies found in several libraries notably that of Quebec contain only 60 plates but it is known that a collection of Parboni plates was published later in 1830 containing plates from 1824 with 100 figures another with 50 plates in 1834; our copy could have been grangerized with plates from these editions. Some plates are numbered but do not appear to have been bound in order. The plates have relatively variable formats 10.5x14.5cm; 10x13.5cm. Contemporary half hazelnut calf bindings. Smooth spines decorated with long ornamental tools. A lack at the head of volume 3. Rubbing to headcaps and joints. Some light foxing in the margins on well-white paper. A good copy. Headcaps and joints very skilfully restored. Tear in the head compartment of volume IV. Rubbing to volume IV title label with gilt worn. Rubbing and scratches on boards. Corners bumped with small lacks along edges. Good copy quite fresh overall. Manuscript ownership inscription in upper margin of title: Petri Andrieu. Important historical work in which Giannone who was one of the great intellectuals of the early 18th century describes and critiques the administrative laws and customs of Naples from ancient times. The Italian edition dates from 1723 but its introduction to France fell victim to censorship the Pope having condemned the work as heretical and defamatory. The author indeed attacks the abuses of the church. Following the persecutions by the church provoked by his book's publication Giannone took refuge in Vienna then was delivered to justice through a ruse by the Duke of Savoy. He would end his life in prison. All 18th-century historians admired his book and drew inspiration from it Montesquieu advocating in his Pensées writing a civil history of France; for indeed a novelty in historical studies Giannone's history of Naples was no longer merely a historical and ecclesiastical study but also a cultural and social history of Naples. Brunet would praise the excellence of the historical work but deplore the shortcomings of the translation which however 18th-century readers found amply satisfactory. This German-born engineer manufacturer and businessman a noted strikebreaker was the first general director of the Emergency Fleet Corporation 1917-19 established by Congress to create the U.S. Merchant Marine fleet to aid the Allies in World War One; a U.S. Merchant Marine vessel named after Piez saw active service in the Sicilian occupation and Salerno landings during World War Two. TLS 1p 8" X 9¼" trimmed Chicago IL 1922 January 12. Addressed to A.D. Sheridan. Very good. All four sides trimmed though not affecting text; minor mounting traces on verso. On letterhead of the "Citizens Committee to Enforce the Landis Award" created to combat the building trades' age-old control of construction which kept rents high; the committee's success paved the way for one of the largest building booms in Chicago history Piez solicits support for the committee's cause. In part: ".we face a most critical situation. The determined effort which is being made to rid Chicago of corruption in the building trade must have united support. Rent the largest item in the family budget has advanced while other things have become cheaper. High rents have a depressing effect on the entire citizen body and effect every payroll in Chicago." Charles-Antoine-Guillaume Pigault de l'Épinoy known as Pigault-Lebrun was a French novelist and playwright born in 1753 in Calais and died in 1835 at La Celle-Saint-Cloud. Pigault Lebrun is at the very source of French popular fiction which flourished in the 19th century with Alexandre Dumas and Eugène Sue.
