From 1906 To 1909 He Was A Consular Official In Syria And Egypt. Powell Worked As A War Correspondent During World War I And His Position As A Neutral Allowed Him Access To Both Sides Of The Battle Lines From 1914 Onwards. With The Entry Of The United States Into The Great War In 1917 Powell Was Commissioned As A Captain In Military Intelligence. He Was Injured In September 1918 And Convalesced Until The Armistice In November Of That Year Thereafter Returning To The Us. He Left The Us Armed Services With The Rank Of Major. Powell Published His War Journalism In Newspapers And Magazines Such As The War Illustrated New York World And The Daily Mail And His War Books Were Published By Charles Scribner's Sons. Powell Then Switched From Journalism To A Successful Career As An Adventure And Travel Writer Traveling Widely Across The Globe And Publishing Some 20 More Books Between 1920 And 1954. Autograph Letter Signed
This noted U.S. Treasury Department statistician was an entrepreneur who created a composite photograph of signers of the amendment abolishing slavery that proved quite popular; he was also an inventor archaeologist social reformer philanthropist and evangelist who created cartographic maps of Egypt and North Africa for the Oriental Topographical Corps. ALS 1p 8½" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. August 29. Addressed to Giles F. Ward in New York City -- possibly father of Giles F. Ward Jr. 1845-65 a lieutenant with the 12th New York Cavalry who was accidentally killed by a colleague while in North Carolina. Very good. Penned on ultra-thin onion-skin paper with occasional burn-through from heavily-inked letters. Reads in part: "I write this. to request that you will favor me with your own opinion freely expressed as to what the price of the Lincoln Cot should be the patent either on a joint stock operation or on sale in the other way you spoke of a simple sale of the right Please let me know what in your judgment it should be even though it be less than 1/10 the proposed figures" Boldly penned in rich brown ink. Powell and two others one of whose last name was Lincoln designed this specialized portable cot in 1862 and sought to interest the U.S. Army in providing it to the troops. John Cowper Powys 1872-1963 was a British novelist lecturer philosopher literary critic and poet. Powys is a somewhat controversial writer "who evokes both massive contempt and near idolatry". Thus while Walter Allen in Tradition and Dream recognizes Powys's genius he is dissatisfied with what Powys has done with it seeing Powyss approach to the novel as "so alien to the temper of the age as to be impossible for many people to take seriously". Annie Dillard however views things quite differently: "John Cowper Powys is a powerful genius whose novels stir us deeply." What is noteworthy is that throughout his career he consistently gained the admiration of novelists as diverse as Theodore Dreiser Henry Miller Iris Murdoch Margaret Drabble and James Purdy as well as the academic critics George Painter G. Wilson Knight George Steiner Harald Fawkner and Jerome McGann. Periodically over almost 50 years starting with Confessions of Two Brothers in 1916 Powys wrote works that present his personal philosophy of life. . In a small flat in New York in the 1920s an old couple former circus performers live a crotchety life of poverty and fear. The ones they fear are the Authorities their name for the cruel and unthinking denizens of the outside world who want to put them into a home. But living with them in their tiny flat are many more presences than they suspect. Powys peoples their world with a gravely philosophical stuffed owl an overly amorous china duck a rude and fatalistic glass fish a pair of tiny Asian god statues a tenderly romantic doll and a sadly dilapidated wooden horse all of whom see the Known World as they call the flat in a biased way according to their super-individual visions. Her extraordinary kindness could be the key to saving the old couple from the Authorities can the ghost of Miss Rowe save the day With a saucy combination of ghoulishness and bouncing enthusiasm John Cowper Powys revels here in unbounded invention creating a short masterpiece of great eccentricity and capacious fantasy. London: Printed for T.N. Longman Paternoster-Row 1798. Octavo bound in full contemporary calf with a burgundy morocco spine label lettered in gilt gilt ruling to the spine. Vol. III of the original five volumes. Tipped in to the pastedown is a small clipped note in the hand of George Washington which reads "with the said" and the bookplate of Benjamin Lincoln Lear. The set in which this volume originated was listed in a manuscript by Washington's private secretary Tobias Lear titled 'Catalogue of Books received from Washington' and bears the bookplate of Lear's son Benjamin Lincoln Lear. Tobias Lear served as Washington's personal secretary from 1784 until the former-President's death in 1799. Washington unexpectedly died while Lear was visiting him at Mount Vernon on December 14 1799 leading to Lear's famous diary entry: "About ten o'clk Saturday December 14 1799 Washington made several attempts to speak to me before he could effect it at length he said—'I am just going. Have me decently buried; and do not let my body be put into the Vault in less than two days after I am dead.' I bowed assent. He then looked at me again and said 'Do you understand me' I replied 'Yes.' "Tis well' said he. Lear oversaw the funeral arrangements even to the detail of measuring the corpse at 6 feet 3.5 inches long and 1 foot 9 inches from shoulder to shoulder. Lear's only biographer Ray Brighton was convinced that Lear destroyed many of Washington's letters and diary entries which he had possession of for about a year after Washington's death. The "Jewel" exhibition, which has been organised this year on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Sadberk Hanim Museum, presents enamelled and jewelled objects in the Turkish-Islamic Section of the museum. The exhibits reflect Ottoman tastes in objects set with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and other precious stones, and exquisitely crafted enamelled artefacts. They include objects for a wide variety of uses, such as belt buckles, writing boxes, pen cases, spoons, coffee cup holders, mastic jars, sherbet cups, pocket watches, fans, fly whisks, tobacco pipes, snuff boxes, brooches, Ottoman decorations and slippers. Throughout history glittering gold and silver objects studded with precious gems have been one of the most eye-catching manifestations of imperial splendour. Apart from the surviving jewelled objects themselves, archive documents, the writings of Ottoman authors and foreign travellers, contemporary paintings and miniatures demonstrate the extensive use of precious metals and gems to adorn items ranging from book bindings to costume in Ottoman culture. As in many Ottoman period arts and crafts, jewelled objects reveal a distinction between the work of court artists and ordinary craftsmen. Since the jewelled and enamelled objects in the Sadberk Hanim Museum collection tend to follow court tastes, most of them were evidently used and worn by people in or close to court circles. They display a wide diversity in terms of function, and although the majority date from the late Ottoman period, overall they cover a broad time span from the 17th century to the 20th century, and include some produced in Europe for the Ottoman market as well as those produced in the Ottoman Empire over this period.
