A dictionary in the "hard words" tradition omitting "the common words of the language" and designed for the use of "young ladies and gentlemen too who have not had the advantage of a liberal or learned education" Preface. Halkett & Laing Kennedy and Alston attribute the work to Baskerville himself - an attribution of which I've always been dubious. In the noted dictionary collector Tom Rodger's copy of Alston he attributes it to Joseph Priestley. George A. Zabriskie was an antiquarian of many talents and in addition to being a successful businessman collector Grolier Club member was a prolific and capable amateur binder. When the most important book on the Shoah went unnoticed Buchet-Chastel Paris 1961 14 x 19 cm broché First French translation of one of the reference works on the Nazi concentration camp system. Of exceptional rarity this French translation of Primo Levi's first book went as unnoticed as the Italian first edition published in 1947. It would take the author's suicide in 1987 for a second French edition to be published and for this fundamental testimony on the Shoah to become this emblematic work of concentration camp literature. Michèle Causse's translation reflects the difficulty of transcribing the words of witnesses to the unspeakable. But it was above all the unconscious refusal to hear this voice that contributed to the failure of Primo Levi's first book like that of Robert Antelme's L'espèce Humaine also written and first published in 1947. It was only during this decade that some of the greatest works on the Shoah would appear successively: Elie Wiesel's La nuit 1958; Anna Langfus's Les bagages de sable 1962; Jorge Semprun's Le grand voyage 1963; Primo Levi's La trêve 1963; Charlotte Delbo's Aucun de nous ne reviendra 1965. ‎London England Britain UK 1852. On offer is the extraordinary Last Will and Testament of Prince Albert Prince Consort and husband of Queen Victoria. This is a document of historical significance. In beautiful mixed gothic and roman cursive it states "This is the last Will and Testament of me Prince Albert of Saxe Cobourg and Gotha. I hereby revoke all Wills and codicils made by me at any time heretofore. I give devise and bequeath unto my dearly beloved Consort Her Majesty Queen Victoria All my real and personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever to hold to Her said Majesty Her Heirs Executors and Administrators according to the respective natures tenures and qualities thereof and I constitute and appoint Her said Majesty Sole Executrix of this my Will. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this heavenly fourth day of August 1852. Signed Albert" Under this main passage is the witness statement by "C.B. Phipps Keeper of Her Majesty's Privy Purse" and "Edward White G. Marlborough St. London Solicitor". The witness statement reads "Signed and Declared by Prince Albert the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us both being present at the the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our Names Witnesses." This is as stated an official copy. Prince Albert died in 1851 and shortly after his death this copy of the Last Will and Testament was inspected for authenticity. This is stated at the bottom of the sheet: "The Writing contained in this sheet of Paper is a true copy of the Original having been carefully examined therewith the 20th day of March 1862 By us. John Harks. Thomas Balten Clerks to Messrs. White Broughton & White 12 Great Marlborough Street London Solrs." The back of the sheet says the same thing. "Attested Copy Will of His Royal Highness the Prince Consort" and is dated "24th August 1852". The will contains an official "One Shilling" stamp impression as well as a circular ink impression that reads "London 20.9.61" and contains a small detailed crown. Albert was born in the Saxon duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and at the age of 20 married his first cousin Queen Victoria. The Queen eventually came to depend very heavily on his support and guidance. He aided the development of Britain's constitutional monarchy by persuading his wife to be less partisan in her dealings with Parliament Albert died at the young age of 42 plunging the Queen into deep mourning. This Last Will and Testament is a testimony to their love. The Queen would never marry again after Albert died. That the Will gives her everything is a beautiful reminder of an important and historic royal marriage. Some splits in the fold but overall G. JS Size: Atlas Folio - over 23" - 25" tall. Good. Not held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and absent from French catalogues. Oxford holds an edition with the same date. English catalogues mention several copies at different dates. Printed in italic type. Fine contemporary German binding on pigskin with clasps in perfect working order. Spine with 3 raised bands unlettered with handwritten paper lettering piece boards stamped in blind with decorative rolls in frames leafy designs with medallions representing Erasmus of Rotterdam and Philip of Milan Martin of Paris John of . Central rectangle with interlacing foliate mirror patterns. 2 dampstains on the upper board one 2cm in diameter and the other 4cm extending outward. Fresh paper. Priscian was a Roman grammarian of the 6th century AD whose Latin name was Priscianus Caesariensis named after his native city of Caesarea in Mauritania. Little is ultimately known of his existence except that he taught in Constantinople and above all that his major work to which he owes his fame the Institutiones Grammaticae in 18 books became the reference for Latin grammar until the end of the Middle Ages. ‎1918 ORIGINAL WORLD WAR I MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN IN INTIMATE DETAIL BY A SADLY TYPICAL FOR TIMES RACIST AT CAMP JACKSON SOUTH CAROLINA‎

‎CAMP JACKSON SOUTH CAROLINA FORT JACKSON. Good. 1918. On offer is a very interesting original 95 page manuscript relic of World War I being the diary of Private Grover Perry Deerwester Battery D 6th Regiment F.A.R.D. Field Artillery Replacement Depot of Bucyrus Ohio handwritten in incredible intimate and graphic detail. It appears that Grover 1888 - 1938 was the son of Commodore Perry Deerwester. The private is at Camp Jackson South Carolina in the Base Hospital and then the Convalescent Hospital. Deerwester on the one hand proves to be somewhat typical of the times and of the sort flinging racial slurs and his thoughts about being in this "hell hole" but he is also a super diarist giving the a long very sad description of a young man that hung him self in the hospital ward a sand storm which he almost did not survive about the men with venereal diseases and much more. The 2 ½" x 5 ½" book begins with over 2 dozen pages of names some autographs and addresses of some of his friends with notes as to what happened to them later on in life for example: "Timothy Dempsey 240 West 67th St. New York City. Gone over seas in O.A.R.D. from 6th regt. F.A.R.D. Edward H. Germit Napoleon Ohio. RFD #8 Box 55. Transferred from 6th Regt. F.A.R.D. to 4th Regt. Cook in Supply until sent back to Camp Sherman." Another rather startling note is crossed out and by it he writes "Deserter". The balance of 60 pages begin in July of 1918 and provide lengthy daily entries about the hospital and his antics and adventures. Here are some snippets: "My Experience in a sand storm. October 18th which I was on guard in the 6th Reg. The moon was shining thru the pines in the Gun Park. It was so light by the moon and the sky was clear. It was a beautiful southern night and as I walked my post I forgot about the war. I forgot that I was in the land of horn toads sand fleas and sand storms. I suppose I even forgot my general and special orders as I walked along on my post. I was thinking of home of my old hometown and the people who lived there. I thought of dad and mother and though how I'd like to surprise them by going home on pass. I was also thinking of my little blue eyed blondie. I wondered if they would all look the same as they did when I last saw them……I don't recall what relief was on that night anymore. I think it was the 3rd the watch from 10 to 12 P.M. I had Post No. 10 and was stationed the farthest away from the guard house and as I walked my rounds thinking over those cherished memories I noticed that a thick fog was gathering then a little breeze sprang up and I thought it was going to rain. I had charge of the gun park and we had to keep a strict watch on them. There were 56 pieces or guns in this park No. 10. Both French and American 75's and the guns and caissons were all covered with heavy tarpaulin covers. Ropes on the covers to tie them down with. It was only a few minutes till it was quite windy….the air was full of sand and dust so thick that a man could hardly see. Not saying anything about what it meant to breath….The storm covers a great territory and are much fiercer than our little whirl winds. I walked my post till I could hardly see and breathing seemed impossible and when the full blast struck I dispensed with general orders and everything else. I called "Corporal of the Guard No. 10 Relief" and repeated the call twice. I heard my calls repeated from other posts but no relief came. I didn't quit my post. I only stopped making the rounds. I took my 45 from its holster and put in a clip of 3 blanks and turned the blanks first for use. But I didn't use them for signal. I had no instructions to use them. So I held the pistol in my right hand gripped and ready to fire and took off my heavy overcoat and laid flat on the ground on left side and put my over coat over my head so I could breath and covered my pistol too. As I lay there in that fiendish storm I thought my wind pipes would burst. As I lay there I said my prayers and cursed that sunny southern land. From many a time I was caught in a storm but never one so fiendish as this one was. I thought to myself so long Ohio and so long my little Blondie….I'll never see any of you anymore. I guess the gig is up for me and when relief came at last the storm was over and the moon was shinning brightly again…." He also relates how he almost shot his relief because his eyes were nearly swollen shut. He also tells of how his face had patches of blood and sand; he was relieved from duty and taken to the Infirmary. It takes an hour for them to get the sand all out of him and they let him sleep in the Regimental Police Sergeants bunk. They had to help him out of bed the next day and gave him a cold shower bath and rubbed him down sprayed "some kind of dope" up his nose and sprayed his throat and dropped some "liquid fire" into his eyes. 1918 "July 17th This date finds me still in the hospital still in ward H-3 under the care of Capt. Latin. I will be released from the hospital tomorrow morning or tomorrow July 18th some time. My old comrades of the Smoky City leave for overseas tomorrow morning at 6 O'clock. I trained for the same purpose of going over with this same bunch of Devil May Care lads and now I'll be getting out of the hospital in time to be transferred into some rotten outfit. Any civilized man would call that "Sho Nuff". Some were to pass the artillery exam for overseas. Some had venereal disease and some were flat footed like a duck. My old pal Hudson from N.Y was too short in one end…." "July 18th Today I will be released from this temporary purgatory on earth. God how happy a man should be to get out of this place alive. It isn't a fit place for the dead. No mentioning the living. Last night another lad ended it all by taking his own life. Oh! I could never do that never. I'd let them chop me up in 1 inch squares before I'd do that. A lad by the name of McGown from Ward H-4 next ward to ours or the one I was in. He had some kind of growth in his throat some thing like a goiter and the surgeons were going to operate on it in a few days and he refused them. Last night the 17th of July he committed suicide by hanging himself with a bed sheet. I don't know how he tore the sheet without his pals hearing him but he took a sheet from his cot and tore it into strips and braided these strips together forming a rope. The head of the hospital cot is about two feet to the top from the mattress. McGown tied the rope like a cord about his neck in a slip knot and then tied the other end to the head of his cot at the top and threw the covers over his head and this morning the orderly found him dead at 4:30 A.M. and his bunk mates never heard him struggle or anything from him last night………" "July 19th Oh! Yes. One important feature about this here Convalescent camp is that it doesn't matter as to your complexion. You may be red white black or blue and you are accepted here. The different races don't sleep in the same tent with the whites but the tents are side by side. One tent has white folks and the other black. You needn't worry if the cover of your nearest neighbors skin doesn't compare with yours of you don't like niggers you can find em from a "high yallow" to an octoroon. If you don't like that kind you can pick out a wop or guinea. The blacks fall in a line by themselves and start for the patient's mess hall which is a good half mile away from this camp and the whites fall in and march to the mess hall in charge of a N.C.O. Well when we reach the mess hall the walks are all screened in like a penitentiary and we must wait out side until these darn coons eat first. After the shines have had their mess the white birds go in and eat next. Every time we enter themes hall some one says "The American Eagle won't scream on skimmed milk." "July 21st The convalescent is the filthiest place I ever got into. Hope it won't be ling that I have to stay here. There are men here who have all kinds of diseases. Some are very contagious and some aren't. There are some here who are quarantined to their quarters who have that dread and very contagious disease called "Meningitis." Nearly every victim of this disease is a cripple after he gets over it if he ever does. I have seen many of the boys who have had it who are cripples for life. No operation can cure them. Many of them walk with a cane as their legs have been drawn crooked so that they can never walk straight again. Their days of soldiering are limited and they are handicapped for life. The men with this disease have their own quarters and bath rooms and they are not allowed to be out with any of the other men. There is one disease here that should be kept in a place by its self too that is the "venereal diseases". But they are not. They are allowed to be out with all the other men eat in the same mess hall bathe in the same bath house use the same toilets and all. In this way I think many a lad who is clean and tires hard to keep his body pure from these hellish diseases of a venereal nature are often a victim by contracting it from the others who have it. Where if these boys were kept in a separate place they wouldn't be exposing innocent lads to the dread of these awful diseases. These boys who have it are low down dirty damn slackers if they don't try to keep a clean lad from getting it." "July 23rd The bathroom is a little shack here about 8ft x 16ft. All classes bathe here. Once a week once a month or when ever they feel like it. Venereal's and all in the same latrine. I have never taken a bath here and thank God I don't have to. I take a bath every other night but not here. I go over to the hospital and get permission to take my bath there….Every lad has a dread for this place. It is so much more like a prison then a detachment of the hospital. It seems more like the mouth of the infernal regions than a place of rest and quiet. We have no freedom here. We can not go to the canteen without falling into line and a N.C.O. takes us over and back again…." "August 6th Oh Boy! After mess today noon I get looked over by Dear old Captain Latin himself and two majors of the medical staff and maybe I'll get to go back to my old 17th this afternoon yet. Oh! Gee Oh! Gee! Gosh "Wow" whoopee. I hear mess call now. I hope this is my last feed of poor old rotten cantaloupe and dried up tomatoes….I wish they would hurry up with that old buzz cart. Gee I'll bet the boys will wonder back at headquarters where I blew in from anyway. Wonder if there is any mail there for me. ‎1861 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT CIVIL WAR DIARY JOURNAL AND MUSTER OF THE NEW YORK STATE MILITIA ANSWERING PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S CALL TO PUT DOWN THE INSURRECTION‎

‎ALBANY New York. Good. 1861. On offer is a significant 1861 Albany New York REPUBLICAN ARTILLERY COMPANY 25th REGIMENT Company A New York State Militia NYSM handwritten Civil War diary and journal completed by Private J. McClelland. On April 15th 1861 President Lincoln called on the States to provide 75000 militia men to meet the call of insurrection for a total of 3 months of duty. The 25th Regiment Company A NEW YORK STATE MILITIA was called up to answer President Lincoln request. This sensational artifact begins April 22 1861 to May 25th 1861 nineteen pages text. For the most part it is written in one hand in ink starting with a list of all the officers and enlisted men including musicians. A total of 82 privates 4 Sgt. 10 musicians 4 corporals 1 Capt. J. Fredendall and 3 Lieut.s Myers Pechim and Stackhouse. Handwriting is very legible. It also lists 3 of the soldiers who died including a Sgt. who started a diary of this company and died before completing it. Research suggests this is not that diary but most likely a source that may have been used by McClelland. The diary is not in chronological order since there are early written references to June 1861 and then later May 1861. The author was most likely was using recollections and written notes of the Sgt. who passed away as mentioned in this written account. This very scarce early Civil War diary highlights a meeting with President Lincoln some fighting early in the war as the 25th took part in the advance into Virginia and occupation of Arlington Heights May 24 1861 and capturing rebel pickets etc. Here are some snippets: "They left Albany on 4/22/1861 for Washington D.C. for 3 months. Did trench work at Arlington Heigths Virg. starting June 20." "On April 28th marched to Casperi's House. Tuesday the 30th the troops were visited by "Abe the President" and Seward. On May 4th sworn to service to the U.S. service to May 23rd. On the 23rd moved into Virginia with 14000 other troops and arrived at Roach's house.who at 4 a.m. took out a pistol and was subdued by the troops. At 8 a.m. saw 2 cavalry pickets who attempted to flee were captured and brought under guard and marched to Washington." "The Rifle Co. being in the rear of the regiment kept on the raid to Harper's Ferry instead of turning to Alexandria as the regiment did." "On May 25th a report went to Washington that they were being cut to pieces and Sherman's battery came over a long bridge flying to our assistance." This leather bound ledger style book was used as the diary/journal along with some Masonic information since McClellan was the treasurer of a Masonic Temple in Wadsworth N.Y. A scarce first hand account of the early Militia and its duties and battle in the Civil War. ‎PHILADELPHIA MOOSE HALL PENNSYLVANIA PA. Good in Fine dust jacket. 1946. On offer is a photo album of 32 photographs detailing a minstrel show that took place at the Philadelphia Moose Hall on April 12 1946. The show was put on seemingly for the employees of the “Proctor & Schwartz” company an appliance manufacturing company in Philadelphia and put on by some employees themselves calling themselves the “Proctor Minstrel Cast & Committee”. The photographs show various scenes of the minstrel show put on the by the all-white cast. There are only three men in full blackface singing and dancing on stage with a few rows of men in suits behind them who took place in the production as well. There is also one man presumably one of the heads of the company in a full white suit sitting in a large chair directly behind the performers and microphone. Who this was is not certain though it may have been A. O. Hurxthal. Watching the performance is a large audience of white middle aged men and women. There is also an orchestra in the pit playing music for the show. This was obviously a well put on production. There are also included photographs of all the men practicing their songs and routines sitting around a woman playing the piano for them and an older man conducting and rehearsing the men. Finally the photo album contains 4 typed letters of congratulations to the “Proctor Minstrel Cast and Committees” “Proctor Minstrels and Assistants” and the “Minstrel Cast and Committee”. The first three letters are signed by H.T. Hershey Walter M. Schwartz and T. Waller. These were all executives at the company. The last letter is typed and signed by A. O. Hurxthal and is the longest and most in depth. “The entertainment provided by the Minstrel Cast and Committee for the employees of P&S was high class and thoroughly entertaining. I had not forgotten the same character of Minstrel of many ears ago and as a result of my favorable recollection I brought along two guests not employees of the Company.They were highly pleased and applauded loudly at all events.and further expressed their opinion that it was an outstanding Minstrel in which everything was clean and no jokes were produced at the expense of others.Now back to my feelings about the matter. I am very greatly gratified at the amount of talent in our Company of which I am sure the Minstrel could only use a part. I was proud of all who took part because they did a fine job. I only hope that more of this type of entertainment can be enjoyed by all of us.” All the photographs was done by “Cramer and Roming”. Each photograph and letter is in a laminated sleeve. All are in very good condition. All the sleeves are bound in a professionally made black binder. The typed letters are in very good conditions as well. The racism espoused in this book is thankfully from another era but these photographs show a very good example of how Minstrel shows were used for white folks entertainment. Background: The minstrel show or minstrelsy was an American form of racially charged entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits variety acts dancing and music performances that mocked people specifically of African American descent. The shows were performed by white people in make-up or blackface for the purpose of playing the role of black people. There were also some African-American performers and all-black minstrel groups that formed and toured under the direction of white people. Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted lazy buffoonish superstitious and happy-go-lucky. From 1850 to 1870 minstrelsy was at its height and in the 1850s ten theaters in New York City alone were devoted almost solely to minstrel entertainment. After 1870 the popularity of the minstrel show declined rapidly and in 1919 only three troupes remained in the U.S. However minstrel show acts continued to be depicted in the cinema and on television well into the 1950s. Amateur minstrel shows continued to be performed in the 1960s and high schools fraternities and local theater groups would usually perform the shows in blackface. The amateur minstrel shows in blackface finally died out in the US in the late 1960s as African Americans asserted more political power but even today minstrel shows are still used as a theme for amateur productions. Introduction to the Old Testament notes taken by Frederick Frothingham' who was an author and abolitionist theologian who wrote popular spiritual commentary during the years of the Civil War. During the years of 1853 - 1854 Frothingham travelled to Germany to study with Prof. Friedrich Bleek whose book shares the same title as these notes. Bleek as a Biblical scholar did much to further the analysis and interpretation of the ancient languages of the Bible and related text. These notes are in English. ‎HARVARD BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA WISCONSIN. Very Good. 1911. On offer is the superb original manuscript journal and diary of Prof. Edgar C. Knowlton 1890-1978 noted linguist translator and author who in intimate detail writes of his life opinions and observations as an undergrad student at Harvard University living at Stoughton Hall. He is a super diarist who in this large page a day book dated January 1 1911 to December 31 1911 writes and over-writes pages on his friends and classmates his opinions on general society manners philosophy books movies social mores and much much more. This is an intimate peek at pre World War I America from the point of view of an intensely intelligent observer of himself the human condition and those around him. Knowlton also records his thoughts and ideas on various books and topics that he was reading or studying for his coursework at Harvard. Researchers and historians of the era would be hard pressed to find a more frank and honest diarist. BIO NOTES: Biography of Edgar C. Knowlton Edgar C. Knowlton was born on 19 Sept 1890 at Manchester New Hampshire the son of George and Alice Knowlton. His father was a druggist. Knowlton obtained his B.A. from Harvard University in 1912 his M.A. in 1913 and his Ph.D. in 1918. His "Potter Prize" dissertation was titled "Nature as an Allegorical Figure." After his schooling he entered the army and served in France during World War I. Knowlton began his teaching career in the public schools at Manchester where he is found living with his parents in the 1920 Census. He later worked at Lafayette College followed by stints at the University of Illinois Ohio Wesleyan and summer sessions at the University of Texas then at Stanford University and finally for many years in the University of Wisconsin system starting at the old La Crosse State College. He began teaching at La Crosse in 1935 the school later became part of the University of Wisconsin system. Knowlton had a reading knowledge of German French Latin Greek Danish Dano-Norwegian Welsh Old Irish Spanish and Italian. He spoke German and French. He wrote a book entitled An Outline of World Literature as well as contributions to a dozen and half books and periodicals. He also published translations of old Welsh poetry and was the co-author of a freshman English textbook. In 1920 Knowlton married Mildred Mason Hunt at Fall River Massachusetts and had a son Edgar C. Knowlton Jr born 1921 in Ohio while his father was teaching at Wesleyan. Edgar junior also became an academic teaching at the University of Hawaii. He was very fluent in languages as well proficient in even more than his father. He also became a widely published author and eventually a Professor Emeritus of European Languages at the University of Hawaii. A Festschrift in his honor "East Meets West" was published in 1988 by the University of Hawaii where it is stated that Prof. Knowlton was fluent in eleven languages with a working knowledge of fifteen others. Edgar Sr. appears to have retired from Wisconsin University La Crosse. He died while living at Wisconsin in November of 1978 at the age of 88 years and 1 month. For the first 112 pages the entries take up the entire pages though Knowlton is not bound by convention and carries on from one day to the next if he needs more writing space afterwards they become less full with the last third of the volume having brief entries and November and December very brief entries. Each page is one day. First gathering slightly yellowing Note: The young equestrian Sextus Propertius born ca. 50 B.C. is one of the most fascinating Roman love poets. His surviving work consists of four books of 'Elegiae' containing 4046 lines of elegiac verse. His poetry at times obscure learned and eccentric can be witty shows dramatic power and combines polish and refinement. § From the Renaissance onward Propertius formed part of a triumvirate of Latin erotic poets together with Catullus and Tibullus. They were already united in one edition published in Venice in 1472. The list of combined editions of these 3 is huge. A fashion for imitating them arose. Many humanist elegiac poets produced poems addressed to some alluring girl as Propertius had done for his Cynthia. Propertius influenced among others the Dutch erotic poet Janus Secundus the English poet John Donne and the German author Goethe. Wellknown is Ezra Pound's 'Homage to Sextus Propertius' 1917. § This 1727 edition of Propertius is a revised edition of the edition of 1702. The first edition was produced by the Dutch scholar/soldier Joan van Broekhuizen Janus Broukhusius 1649-1707 who during an adventurous life pursued his classical studies and poetry at leisure. As a neolatin poet he is known as the 'Propertius of Holland'. Sandys 2329 In 1684 he published his 'Carmina' a collection of his Neolatin poetry. Utrecht 1684 His editions of Propertius 1702 and Tibullus 1707 laid the foundation for his reputation as a classical scholar. He was admired as a latinist for his taste and for his erudition. NNBW 4309/12 This second edition was produced by the Dutch scholar and minor poet Pieter Vlaming 1686-1733. In the preface L.B. Lectori Benevolo Vlaming tells us that he once bought at the auction of the library of the Dutch classical scholar and schoolmaster David Hoogstraten a 'codex' manuscript filled with annotations from the hand of Broukhusius which he apparantly had been collecting for a projected second edition of Propertius. Nothing came however of such an edition. Hoogstraten died 1724 Now at the request of the publishers Wetstein Vlaming produced a new revised and augmented edition of Propertius. 'Nihil dedimus nisi mere Broukhusianum'. p. 3 recto One year later in 1728 and 21 years of the death of Broukhusius Vlaming published also Broukhusius' edition of the 'Opera omnia' of the Italian neolatin poet Sannazarius/Sannazaro Provenance: On the front flyleaf 2 small names: ''Margadant 1912' and 'F.J. Brevet 1914'. § The first name must be of the Dutch man of letters Steven Willem Floris Margadant born in The Hague in 1887; he died in 1946. In 1929 he published 'De psychologie van het Grieksche werkwoord'. 'Persoonlijkheden in het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in woord en beeld' Amsterdam 1938 p. 979 § The next owner the jurist Frederik Jacobus Brevet 1893-1983 was a businessman and also a man of letters. In 1958 he published a translation of 16 odes and an epode of Horace. In 1966 followed a more varied collection 'Mozaïek' which contained besides more translations of Horace also Catullus a number of poems from the 'Carmina Burana' and from Greek poet Meleager and poetry of his own. In 1978 appeared a translation of all 103 odes of Horace. From 1952 till the end his life he contributed a great many articles on classical culture to the periodical Hermeneus of the Dutch Classical Society NKV.
