The first 184 pages contain the two dissertations on Ratramnus p. 185-287 contain the Latin text with an opposing French translation Condition: Corners slightly bumped Note: Ratramnus was a Benedictine monk of Corbie 870. In 843/44 he wrote this work on request of Charles the Bald in which he emphasises the figurative nature of the sacraments and contradicted the doctrine of the transsubstantiation. He also goes under the name Bertram or Intramn. The book was considered to be heretic and forbidden in 1050. During the Reformation the book was rediscovered by protestants. The author of the two dissertations is the English clergyman Canon of Worcester and antiquary William Hopkins 1647-1700. The translator is the Huguenot refugee J.-F. Bernard. See Bakhuizen p. 120/1 & 128/9 Hopkins' dissertation accompanied by a Latin text and an English translation of Ratramnus was first published in 1686 and reissued in 1688. The lithograph was created by Edmund Walker 1813 or 1814-1882 of Day & Son after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray 1818-1854 was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery Inhabitants & Costumes of Afghaunistan 1847-48. This is plate no. 2 a portrait of Dost Mohammed who had been deposed as Emir of Afghanistan. In January 1841 when Rattray was granted an audience with him in Peshawar Dost Mohammed was a prisoner on his way to exile in Calcutta. Rattray wrote that since Dost Mohammed had been "a ruler just and merciful and attentive to affairs of state" the people of Peshawur thought that he had been unjustly treated by the British. Libertine novel marking a turning point in the writing of this type of novel the hero is no longer a nobleman possessing all the attributes of fortune and good birth but an impoverished noble forced to find a profession to provide for his needs. This social change illustrates the shift in the readership of the libertine novel evolving towards the bourgeoisie. The work is described in the ""Bibliographie du genre romanesque français"" A. Martin. A younger son is sent to his uncle in a monastery to complete his education. This project will naturally be a failure and the hero will easily find a path in libertinage the coveting of women and deception. Testament politique autographe signé de Ravachol en grande partie inédit
1892. Fine. 1892 20 x 29.50 cm 4 pages sur un double feuillet Exceptional complete autograph manuscript of Ravachols true last testament largely unpublished unknown in this form preceding its rewriting by a third party for publication in the press. A unique testimony to the genuine thought of the anarchist icon. Four-page lined quarto manuscript entirely written in black ink and signed twice Konigstein Ravachol at the foot of each sheet. Pencil corrections within the text possibly in the hand of his lawyer. Some horizontal folds and very minor marginal tears without loss. Written in his prison cell during the second Montbrison trial that led to his death sentence this text hastily penned without punctuation or capital letters and in naïve spelling was meant to be delivered orally by Ravachol during the hearing. Ravachol was dead set on putting in his two cents for the defence not to defend himself but to explain. No luck dammit! Four words in and the judge cut him off. His statement isnt lost by Jove! Émile Pouget in Père Peinard July 310 1892. This self-styled Rocambole of anarchism was not allowed to read his statement aloud but he handed it to his lawyer Maître Lagasse and by June 23 the forbidden text appeared in the conservative newspaper Le Temps. This first publication was so faithful to the original that it preserved the author's eccentric spelling a fidelity that Émile Pouget would ironically criticise in the Père Peinard issue of July 3 1892 one week before Ravachols execution: Le Temps that opportunist bedsheet printed it as is. Like a true Jesuit it even printed it too true. Ravachol had written the thing for himself; he knew how to read it but there wasnt a word of correct spelling seeing as he knew about spelling as much as he knew about cabbage farming. Le Temps printed the thing without changing a line so its practically unreadable . Thats exactly what the bastards wanted dammit! . Im reprinting it below without changing a word just fixing the spelling. That same July 3 issue of Père Peinard included a corrected version orthographically of the statement initially published in Le Temps. This dual publication combined with Ravachols defiant bearing before the guillotine had a powerful effect on public opinion. Until then even anarchist publications had kept a certain distance from this provocative criminal suspected of using the anarchist cause for personal gain. But following his execution the testament was quickly reproduced in other newspapers and Ravachols final cry of revolt soon became a genuine anarchist anthem among libertarians worldwide. However the version circulated in the press the only known version until now the original manuscript having disappeared differs markedly from the manuscript in our possession. Indeed the style was lightly polished several turns of phrase refined and most significantly entire passages were excised including the conclusion paragraph which was fully replaced. Our manuscript with its crossings-out and revisions is likely the original version of this political testament. Written in a single burst in dense handwriting without punctuation or paragraph breaks it includes two lengthy sections expressing concerns for public health that are entirely absent from the published version. The first is a third of a page-long passage about the dangerous ingredients added to bread: no longer needing money to live thered be no fear of bakers adding dangerous ingredients to bread to make it look better or heavier since it wouldnt profit them and theyd have like everyone else and by the same means access to what they needed for their work and existence. Thered be no need to check whether the bread weighs right if the money is counterfeit or if the bill is correct. Extremely rare handwritten caption signed by the most famous of the French anarchists written in his hesitant and naive handwriting at the bottom of the photo: 1er mai 1892 Koningstein sic Ravachol 1st May 1892 Koningstein sic Ravachol. The spelling Koningstein chosen by Ravachol differs from his father's surname Königstein. This variation confirmed by the Maintron Biographical dictionary of the social and labour movement is found in particular in a piece of his writing by hand dated 13 April 1892 and kept at the Conciergerie. We have not been able to find any other copy of this photograph in international public collections or on sale at auction. Autographs of the Christ de l'anarchie Christ of anarchy are extremely rare. We know only of this unique signed photograph of Ravachol with the exception of the one mentioned in the Conciergerie surveillance reports: Le nommé Ravachol nous a fait voir sa photographie sur le recto de laquelle il a inscrit ces mots: «à tous ceux que j'ai aimé. Mon cur sera toujours près de vous ma dernière pensée sera pour vous. Tous mes baisers The named Ravachol showed us his photograph on the front of which he wrote these words: To all those whom I have loved. My heart will always be near you my last thought will be for you. All my love. Signed Ravachol. He intended to send this photograph to his brother along with a letter summarised as follows: Comme vous le voyez je suis souriant sur ma photographie vous pourrez donc en déduire que mon sort n'est pas si triste que vous le pensez. Il ne me manque qu'une chose: la liberté. Du reste je ne fais aucune différence entre ma vie en prison et celle que je menais auparavant. Toutes les deux ne sont que souffrance. Le vrai bonheur n'existera pour moi que lorsque je verrai la réalisation de mes projets si cela ne se peut je préfère la mort. J'envisage ces deux points le sourire aux lèvres. As you can see I am smiling in my photograph so you can assume that my fate is not as sad as you might think. I miss only one thing: freedom. Otherwise I notice no difference between my life in prison and the one I led before. Both know only suffering. True happiness will only exist for me when I see my projects realised if that is not possible I prefer death. I consider these two points with a smile on my lips. 8 May 1892. We were un able to identify this photo and have found no other trace of it since this report. For that matter we are not certain that this photograph still exists. Like ours it was taken during a sitting at the Conciergerie prison on 6 May 1892 during which several poses were taken. Therefore Ravachol backdated his dedication by probably using the symbolic date 1st May 1892 the first anniversary of the Fourmies massacre. On offer is an archive of three 3 composition notebooks and a letter documenting two men John Terreault and Ray Johnson who appears to be the inspired writer of the two who canoe from Montreal to New York and back in 1933. 111 pages with all pages full with writing. Included is a letter from Ray Johnson to Helen Cotes. The letter is 8 pages full and is written after the canoe trip. Ray met Helen in Little Falls NY during the canoe trip back from New York. They continued to correspond and eventually got married and moved to Pickle Lake Canada while Ray worked in the Pickle Creek Gold Mine for awhile. They eventually moved to Carthage NY and then to Manlius NY. These books are a charming relic of the Depression era and a bit of Americana of a time never to be repeated. Octavo imprimatur leaf title page dedication page pp 26 396; ii half-title to second volume 186; 45 bookseller's catalogue 3 pages the last page torn and repaired without loss. Fairly heavy browning and foxing on some pages throughout contemporary panelled calf rubbed and scuffed corners worn rebacked at some time with a new calf spine raised bands en extract from a bookseller's catalogue for this copy attached with sellotape to the rear endpaper. The front endpaper contains the armorial bookplate of Sir Edward William Watkin 1819-1901 Member of Parliament and railway entrepreneur; also with the signature of W. Fletcher Grappenhall Cheshire. John Ray was the compiler of these important travels. It is the first English translation of the Rauwolf who was a German physician botanist and traveller. His main notability arises from a trip he made through the Levant and Mesopotamia in 1573-75. The motive of the trip was to search for herbal medicine supplies. Shortly after he returned he published a set of new botanical descriptions with an herbarium. Later he published a general travel narrative about his visit. In addition to botanical investigations Rauwolff observed and recorded his impressions of the people customs and sights of the Levantine region; he was one of the first Europeans to describe the drinking of coffee. Illustrated with three engraved folding plates an engraved portrait one engraving within the text small thick octavo pp xiii i 499 i title to the Catalogus Stirpium v i 115 with the errata leaf lacking the title page which is supplied in an old-style photo copy the plates are a little browned and creased and one is splitting along the fold some age-toning and signs of use throughout signs of damp damage to the lower margins throughout with some pages frayed and flaking very slight loss of text to about fifteen pages bound in a recent very simple full calf no title to the spine. A good working copy of a very scarce title. John Ray FRS 1627 - 1705 was an English naturalist widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists. His classification of plants in his Historia Plantarum was an important step towards modern taxonomy. Ray rejected the system of dichotomous division by which species were classified according to a pre-conceived type system and instead classified plants according to similarities and differences that emerged from observation. He was among the first to attempt a biological definition for the concept of species. In the spring of 1663 Ray started together with Willughby and two other pupils Philip Skippon and Nathaniel Bacon on a tour through Europe from which he returned in March 1666 parting from Willughby at Montpellier whence the latter continued his journey into Spain. He had previously in three different journeys 1658 1661 1662 travelled through the greater part of Great Britain. But from this Continental tour Ray and Willughby returned laden with collections on which they meant to base complete systematic descriptions of the animal and vegetable kingdoms. Willughby undertook the former part but dying in 1672 left only an ornithology and ichthyology for Ray to edit; while Ray used the botanical collections for the groundwork of his Methodus plantarum nova 1682 and his great Historia generalis plantarum 3 vols. 1686 1688 1704. The plants gathered on his British tours had already been described in his Catalogus plantarum Angliae 1670 which formed the basis for later English floras. . First Edition. Full Leather. Fair. With four engraved plates small octavo t.p. 201326 133-406 2-page publisher's catalogue browning and age-toning with occasional blotching a corner torn from the first blank a worm-hole in the margin of the early pages but only really noticeable on the first eleven pages tight internally original calf rubbed and pocked neatly re-backed with new unlettered leather spine the original endpapers retained. In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. RARE. Although dated 1835 this is obviously a slightly later issue as there are two publisher's catalogues bound in at front and rear dayed 1838 and 1839 respectively. This book seems considerably scarcer than the translation of Rayer's other work of 1835. Pierre François Olive Rayer 1793 - 1867 was a French physician who was a native of Saint Sylvain.
