The Journal ladies and modes is a trimensuelle illustrated French fashion magazine created in 1797. Its publication was stopped in 1839 before being taken in June 1912 under the leadership of Tommaso Antongini secretary friend and biographer of Gabriele 'Annunzio. It will disappear in August 1914 on the eve of the First World War. The review was drawn to 1279 copies making it for the time a relatively confidential publication. The 186 plates with great finesse are engraved on strong paper and colored stencil. They represent the majority of the time women but also men and children. The models are not unlike those of the Gazette fashionable whose publication will be launched a few months later those renowned couturiers but are the fruit of the imagination of the illustrators themselves. The stencils are mostly executed by George Barbier but other artists collaborating on the magazine: Léon Bakst B. Berty Bernard Boutet de Monvel Roger Broders Jan van Brock Umberto Brunelleschi H. Robert Dammy Etienne Drian Abel Faivre Marie-Madeleine Franc-Nohain Xavier Gosé Paul Iribe Kriegck Victor Lhuer Pierre Legrain Charles Martin Fernand Simeon Ismael Smith Armand Vallee and Gerda Wegener. Many of these illustrators will also be involved in The Gazette fashionable. Their work emblematic of the Art Deco movement emphasize the influence of Orientalism and costumes of the Ballets Russes while registering in the daily activities of affluent French of the time. From the preface of the first issue of 1912 Anatole France said: ""After seventy-five years he is reborn. He is reborn through the efforts of a few ingenious minds and artists. He is reborn for the curious if there is that do not simply modes newspaper fired several thousand and illustrated by photography. And if publishers make us very exactly in its format with its paper printing its processes of etching and coloring the old classic patterns of the past is that they intend to continue the pleasantly and become charming classic fashion of today and tomorrow. Envelope included. Some punch holes in the margin of the letter and envelope not affecting the text as well as some folds inherent to the folding of the missive. Roger Caillois thanks the Czech writer for the ""issues of Gravida that he was kind enough to send him"". Arnost Budik was indeed part of the editorial committee of this Belgian surrealist magazine and seems to have solicited a contribution from Caillois: ""Please find enclosed a text that I have just completed."" Caillois was alongside the surrealists only very briefly from 1932 to 1935 and here seems to apologize for this distancing: ""Surrealism never much appreciated descriptive-meditative poetry where I believed later to find my path. So if the text does not suit you have no qualms about returning it to me quite simply. I would understand very well."" unknown

Interesting letter concerning the article ""Mémoire interlope"" which would appear in issue 185 of the sixteenth year May 1968 of the Nouvelle Revue Française. At this time Marcel Arland and Jean Paulhan were both directors of the review which they had revived from its ashes in 1953. Roger Caillois's correspondent Dominique Aury also known under the pseudonym Pauline Réage sat on the Reading Committee of the famous Revue. This letter concerns a ""note"" that Roger Caillois asks Dominique Aury not to publish: ""Pour la note comme je l'avais dit à Arland je renonce à la publier. Notre ami la prendrait surement comme une sorte de coup de poignard dans le dos une trahison d'autant plus délibérée que je n'écris pour ainsi dire jamais de note. Elle n'en vaut pas la peine."" ""Regarding the note as I had told Arland I'm giving up publishing it. Our friend would surely take it as a sort of stab in the back a betrayal all the more deliberate since I practically never write notes. It's not worth it."" We could find no trace of this enigmatic note which Roger Caillois is impatient to recover: ""Retournez-la moi voulez-vous. J'en ferai peut-être le noyau d'une étude plus étendue où j'essaierai qu'apparaissent moins irritants que dans ce condensé les rapprochements litigieux."" ""Return it to me would you. I might perhaps make it the core of a more extended study where I will try to make the contentious connections appear less irritating than in this condensed version."" unknown

In this letter he invites his correspondent to go to the actress's residence with Alexandre Dumas to study her correspondence. ""Mon cher ami Hier soir à cinq heures j'ai appris une nouvelle si triste qu'elle a influé subitement sur ma santé ; j'ai combattu vainement cette impression on m'a tant tourné le sang que je viens d'appeler un médecin. Il m'a fait une ordonnant indiquant 3 mois de régime excusez du peu ! . Soyez donc allez bon vous deux Dumas pour venir demain relever dans les lettres de Melle Mars ce qui sera utile . A fine edition whose interest lies in bringing together an important collection of gallant novels from the court of Louis XIV the Histoire amoureuse des Gaules usually occupying only one volume. The 4 other volumes thus contain a little more than 15 other novellas or small gallant novels some by Courtilz de Sandras others remaining anonymous. The whole constitutes an important sum of this literature linked to the century of Louis XIV. Contemporary full marbled brown calf binding. Smooth spine decorated in grotesque style with a scattering of stars. A crack to the upper joint of volume I at head. Small lacks at head of volume II. In volume IV one signature sprung several leaves in volume I. P.15 lack to outer margin not touching text. Scattered pale foxing. 18th-century pen ownership inscription in the margin of title pages: Froment. Details of the volumes: Volume I: Lettre au Duc de Saint-Aignan of 12 November 1665 Histoire amoureuse des Gaules contains all the usual texts Histoire de Madame de Sevigny i.e. Sévigné Histoire des amours de Madame de Monglas les Maximes d'amour.
