Over A Three-Year Period He Raised The Sum Of $150000 Through The Sale Of The Public Lands Which Was Used To Establish The Public School System In Ohio. In 1851 Rice Was Elected To The Ohio Senate And Served For Two Years. During His Time In The Senate He Was Responsible For Introduction And Passage Of Laws To Reorganize The Public School System Of The State And Establish A System Of Public Libraries. Quarter bound in brown cloth over marbled boards gilt lettering on spine maps on endpapers. Illustrated with photographs of Rich's bound manuscript a section of manuscript itself and a portrait. Edited with an Introduction by Dwight L. Smith. This is the first printing of Virtulon Rich's journal of his travels West from his home in Vermont to the Ohio Valley. Rich's manuscript was re-discovered in the Los Angeles bookshop of Bennett and Marshall in 1963. They had purchased it some years earlier for a Mr. Spicer who claimed to be a descentant of Rich's. The editor Dwight L. Smith was assisted in his work by members of the Caxton Club and by the staff of the Newberry Library. The President of the Newberry Library at the time was Hermon Dunlap Smith who was also a former President of the Caxton Club. Dwight L. Smith was a prolific author and editor of works on early American history and Westward expansion. He was the author of "Era of the American Revolution: A Bibliography" Indians of the United States and Canada: A Bibliography" and "American and Canadian West." He edited numerous works in this field including "John D. Young and the Colorado Gold Rush" Survival On Westward Trek: 1858-1859: The John Jones Overlanders" "The Colorado River Survey: Robert B. Stanton and the Denver Colorado Canyon & Pacific Railroad" and many others. . ‎Omaha Nebraska: Omaha Nebraska Ford Motor Company Labor Relations Greatest Generation. Good. 1930-1945. Hardcover. On offer is a rare 14-volume archive of diaries that chart the course of an American boy's life through the Great Depression and World War II a classic member of 'the Greatest Generation'. This is an outstanding archive of diaries that document the life of a man throughout his boyhood in Midwestern America throughout the Great Depression and into WWII. The author of this archive is Richard Allen Metzler. He was born in 1920 in Omaha Nebraska where his father Clyde was a dentist. He married Doris Cuthbert in 1946. He worked his entire career with Ford Motor Company. His wife taught with distinction in the Dearborn Public Schools system. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 80. His diaries begin at age 10 and continue until he is 25. This is a terrific collection. It traces this boy's growth as a young child teenager college student and young man through some of the most momentous years of the 20th century. As would be expected his writing matures over the years as he begins to add reflection and nuance to his daily entries. Taken as a whole they offer a superb picture of growing up in the America in the pre-war years. The following excerpts will give a sense of the flavour of these diaries: "This afternoon Paul Richard's brother went downtown with Bob Muchow and went to a show. Tonight Eddie came over and we played down in the basement" Mar 28 1930; "Tonight Paul went to the drawing lesson all alone and staid up to Story's and ate supper. Today altogether I won sixteen snurts one glassy and three mossies nicknames for types of marbles May 1 1930"; "This morning Paul went caddying but didn't earn anything. This afternoon Lary me and Paul went swimming. We got a new car and went riding" June 11 1930. Two years later he has a paper route that he manages for the next several years and takes very seriously : "We had a short little moving picture on how to brush your teeth today at school. It snowed all day today. Story carried newspapers with me. Paul went to scout meeting. I made fudge did homework and played with Tag after supper" Feb 16 1932; "In homeroom assembly I had to get up and talk on "the industry of carrying papers". When I went to school this morning I locked myself out of the house so I ate up at 27th with Story . I had to come home from Scout Meeting and go over to P. T. A. At North and demonstrate how to do beadwork in front of a pile of people. "Was I mortified! " May 8 1932; "1 of us kids went on a hike to Stone Park this morning. The other 3 walked but I rode the bike and carried all the stuff. When I was going down a hill I was in a deep rut and didn't have any brakes and there was a log slap bang in front of me ." Nov 30 1934; "Paul Huntley and Bill slept out in Stone Park last night so I carried Paul's route. Snyder helped me carry my route and then dad took us out. Threw axes and knives at trees all day. Ate dinner out there. . Found out that Huntley smokes. . Typed some more chain letters" May 5 1935; ". Eddie Meents is in my Chem class. He flunked Chem 2 last sem. & is going to flunk again. Bob Bierworth is back from reform school. He looks like the sea hag's dad…" Sept 23 1936; ". Went to A. Y. McDonald and applied for a job. Fred Hagly even phoned up here for me. He said to start tomorrow. So ----- . Paul left for Beresford to work for three weeks…" Aug 14 1938. His entries focus almost exclusively on his immediate world. He does make a passing reference to troubles afar: ". Got a cottage on Lake Carlos with electricity so now we can hear the war nes - it started Thurs. I guess but we didn't know about it" Sept 2 1939; ". I haven't said a thing about the European War. Well there is one and a real one. In fact France is licked and Britain looks pretty sick. Looks like Hitler is on the way. Hadn't better come over here bless his hide." June 18 1940; ". Just started on a letter to Marj when I was called to the phone by Mrs S. I just sensed what it was before she called up the stairs - Paul was phoning that he had gotten a telegram from Dad that mother had passed away at 5: 30 this morning. At 5: 30 A. M. July 18 1941 my mom ceased to suffer and is now with the Lord and waiting for me and Paul and dad." July 18 1941. Clipped in to a back page is a newspaper clipping of the announcement of her death. He notes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the fact that America will be at war. His Dec 9th entry begins with the laconic: "Well they didn't bomb Detroit - yet…"Dec 9 1941. He writes detailed entries about his life at college especially his life as a fraternity member. 1942 however finds him in Detroit working for Ford Motor Company - a place he would work for the rest of his life: ". Johnson and I walked over to the glass plant but got kicked out because its been completely converted into government tool & die ." Dec 5 1942And lest people thought that the war effort made other labour concerns fade away he records this: ". We struggled to keep ourselves occupied - the whole foundry was on strike. Don't like the swing shift. The stinkers should be slapped into the Army…" May3 1943; ". Foremen on strike at the Rouge. A negro-white race riot started on Belle Isle bridge last night. Several dead lot wounded…"June 21 1943. His last entry is rather poignant: ".Got a card from Dorothy Head. . She asked me why I broke it up & I told her - that I was getting way too much involved & I was too yellow to get married. She told me she loved me at the time & would have married me that I nearly broke her heart. I told her I had walked out on at least 3 other gals just the same way since. So we had quite a talk" Apr 2 1945. Within the next 15 months he would meet and marry Dorothy Cuthbert and they would be married for 50 years. For a historian this is a simply outstanding archive. Its rare to find a large group of diaries started by a young boy and maintained through to adulthood. The diaries chart the not only physical growth of this boy but the development of values and character. It is an excellent longitudinal study of life growing up in Midwestern America - a classic example of a member of what Tom Brokaw described as The Greatest Generation. For genealogists these diaries are a treasure trove. In many of them he keeps detailed lists of people he knows with in some cases phone numbers and addresses as well as class lists. This is a rare and certainly valuable collection of diaries. This collection includes 14 diaries from 1930-1945. Only 1931 is missing. The diaries vary in size most are hardcover all are 100% complete and in good condition. ‎SOUTH YORKSHIRE KEXBROUGH ENGLAND UK. Good. 1943. On offer are two 2 diaries documenting life of a young boy from rural England during the Second World War. When starting the first diary Richard was 13 and lived in Kexbrough at the border of South and West Yorkshire near the river Dearne with his aunt and father. The diaries contain many details of wartime life like rationing and watching war documentaries; Richard's school friend is in the Air Training Corps and a family member probably his brother is serving in the navy - there are several entries where Richard writes about him coming for a leave from Devonport the naval base near Plymouth: "Ernest came home. Looks very nice in sub-lieutenant's uniform.Ernest goes back to Devonport on Monday" and about receiving parcels from Sicily where the Allied Forces landed in July 1943. The diaries mention a strike of bus drivers in January 1943 organized by the Labour movement a not widely known war time event. However his diaries are mainly an account of everyday life of a 13-year old boy who goes to school plays football boxing does household chores: "Had a boxing match with a boy in our class in gym. Did not get hurt gave him one in eye". What makes the diary stand out is Richard's keen eye for nature: almost every day he goes to the woods or to the river hunting or fishing and records his observations: "saw a fox and found a rabbit nest" "found a pheasant's feather" "found a small lizard probably sand lizard". He is biking around much often with his best friend Brian Loy nicknamed "Myrna" after a movie star of 1930s. The first entry in 1943 is instructions how to cure a deer skin the process that occupies much of his time during January and February and the second is "Notes on my rabbits and how to house and feed them in winter and summer" - he write about his rabbits almost every day. Richard's family had Scottish origin - several entries in 1943 describes a trip to Edinburgh and Glazgo with his father where they visit relatives and he also writes about a photograph of uncle Alfred Benjamin Lean who served in the Royal Navy during the WW1 as a gunner and was presented to the King in Edinburgh. As Richard is growing up the content and style of his diary are changing the entries become longer and more detailed he writes more about school classes and exams starts mentioning girls names has more duties at home travels longer distances. The diary mentions different geographic places in the area names of local residents Mr. And Mrs. Birkenshaw Mary Sutton students and school teachers. The books are small-sized one in a marbled leather cover and the other in a black leather-like cover. Condition: good there are no missing or torn pages ink has slightly faded in few places. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on verso pale marginal foxing small dark dampstain with very slight loss to corner light trace of the stamp from the previous engraving on recto. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Jeux du cirque written by Hugues Le Roux. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other journals such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the journal. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the end of the 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too insubstantial owes its reputation not to its own beauty but indeed to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more suited than any other to receive a fine printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and pasted on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the illustrated deluxe book. ‎1890 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY BY A CONTRARY CRITICAL XENOPHOBIC ENGLISH MAN‎

‎CHARING CROSS TO TORINO ROME ITALY. Good. 1890. On offer is an interesting manuscript relic of late 19th Century travel and xenophobia handwritten by Richard Rouse-Boughton Orlebar R. R.-B. Orlebar 1862-1950 of Hinwick House near Wellingborough Bedfordshire on an extended trip to Italy. The largish 8.5 x 7 inch cloth bound book has 54 pages of detailed observations and entries. Beginning at Charing Cross January 15th 1890 Orlebar is not shy to criticize: 'I revile the luggage registering official at Charing Cross' the landscape 'how hideously ugly France seemed' the locals in Basle 'capacious…dirty…swarm of porters' to the old lady who scowled at him 'for the rather profuse amount of luggage to the unaccustomed eye'. He also notes; awaking a 'strong John Bull feeling' in him. In Basle it is too dark to see anything but the 'fine station' with its 'villainous lot of porters'. In Italy he is appalled 'by the nauseous abundance of olive oil' and 'the habits of certain natives . eating macaroni with their fingers dangling it on high as it flapped against their eye teeth. The women were as bad as the men. Eugh! John Bull for ever.' While fulminating against the 'eccentricities of Italian railways' he declares that 'verily there is much need for warning wherever the spur of the Englishman doesnt penetrate deeply enough'. Where the natives 'are left to their own unhappy devices civilization is sure to suffer'. He finds this view confirmed on the discovery that his wife's pocket has been picked in Rome and that he himself has lost 'a friendly walking stick & a still more friendly knife that B had given me 10 years ago'. Embarking at Brindisi they discover Sir Greville Smyth 'at the head of the gangway'. The feel they are 'almost like getting home again' until they discover that 'a 4th. being had been made happy in Italy that day through having obtained unlawful possession of one of the straps off a Gladstone bag - that most willing & suffering of all articles of baggage - but to whom a strap is as invaluable as a belt to an over hungry man.' Matters are more to Orlebar's satisfaction on board ship until he discovers 'sand from those villainous Italian Railways' inside his portmanteau' - the culprit is revealed as an open mustard tin.` Even the ancient Romans had to bear his ill will at times. Orlebar though can be quite charming as a writer with many nice turns-of-phrase and when all is well and there aren't other people around he can be quite tolerant. The travel diary is further enhanced with his tucked in drawing of Aden Harbor 2 Cape St. Vincent and Valleta Historians and researchers of the era and overland European travel may well relish a 'contrary' diarist who is not afraid to 'dish'. Lt Col 5th Bt Res 1915-1918 mentioned in Despatches. Hon Lt Col TF Res from 1918. Lived at Hinwick House near Wellingborough. Appointed a JP in 1911. Listed in Kelly's Handbook funeral notice in The Times says the funeral was at St Mary's Podington.' The book proper has some bend to the cover curl to the tips and rubbing but the interior is very good otherwise. Lacking marbled endpapers before half-title and at end. Both volumes very fresh overall. Blue stamp on title pages: Institution Pelletin or Felletin. Manuscript ex libris S. Petri Exdronensis. Father Richard Simon an Oratorian is considered the founder of modern biblical exegesis. This recognition was even affirmed by the Church in 1993. In 1678 he published his Critique du vieux testament which after being severely criticized by both Bossuet and Nicole ended up on the Index in 1683. The publication of this work only exacerbated the tensions that Simon had ignited against himself among all religious congregations through his new reading of biblical texts; never partisan he questioned the Bible with knowledge of sources as had never been done before. In the first work Simon discusses the origin and character of the different books that compose the New Testament. The journal first appeared in volume form in 1712. Contemporary full speckled brown sheep binding. Spine with five raised bands red morocco title and volume labels gilt compartments and floral fleurons. All edges red. Head caps of volumes 1 2 3 4 5 7 and 8 and foot caps of volumes 2 3 4 and 9 abraded some damaged. Corners slightly bumped. Four joints cracked. Pale marginal dampstains to the second volume. The Spectator was one of the first English periodicals to appear daily from 1711 to 1712. Intended for the Middle Class Addison believed that despite its daily print run of 4000 copies it was read by approximately 60000 Londoners. The Spectator was very popular and reprinted many times during the 18th century. It cast an ironic eye on English society and left a lasting mark on the press through its novelty.
