Georges Dimitrov head of the Comintern bureau for Western Europe is in Berlin in February 1933. On the night of February 27 the Nazi regime then in power for only a month takes advantage of the criminal arson of the Reichstag to impute responsibility to communist militants and the left-wing opposition. On March 9 Dimitrov is arrested with five of his companions including Tanev and Popov. After a long trial in Leipzig and a public counter-trial organized by German communist Willy Münzenberg Dimitrov is acquitted. Fold inherent to postal dispatch. Romain Rolland fully committed himself to the defense of his Bulgarian comrades incriminated by the Third Reich: ""Enclosed copy of the response I am addressing to the Reichsgerichtanwalt of Leipzig. I have made use of the indications provided by the international commission of inquiry on the Reichstag fire from which I received a detailed letter."" despite his precarious state of health: ""No I am not recovered. My health is still very poor but I could not leave unanswered this insidious letter from the Reichsgeritchanwalt which calls into question the lives of these unfortunates."" Tireless pacifist militant and scourge of imperialisms Romain Rolland also supports the liberation struggle of autonomist movements: ""For the Indo-Chinese it is very difficult to find available funds - which are lacking to come to the aid of the oppressed of Europe. Perhaps they rely on the Handbuch der klassischen Literatur by J.J. Eschenburg Berlin 1818 p. 74 where the book is attributed to Comite Polcastro. Or it is attributed to the Padovian Polcastro because the firm of Giuseppe Comino used to print scientific texts produced by professors of the University of Padova among which in 1773 Polcastro's Notizia della scoperta fatta in Padova d'un ponte antico con una romana iscrizione. Polcastro was a well known philologist born in Padua. G. Mussato began a laudatio on him like this: En Polcaster adest Patavi lux alma decusque/ qui domus et patriae nomen ad astra vehit. G. Vedova. Biografia degli scrittori padovani II p. 111/15. However it seems far more probable that the son of Giuseppe Comino Josephus Cominus Angelo produced this anthology. On page 3 we find a kind of subtitle which we have to elucidate matters put between brackets immediately after the title described above. In this 'subtitle' it is stated that Angelus F. Josephi Cominus gave this fasciculum inscriptionum to/for students tironibus studiosis who study epigraphy. He wants them to understand old inscriptions better and to be able to produce them elegantly themselves. After the death of Giuseppe in 1762 his son Angelo continued the firm more than 30 years still using the name of his father in the imprint. The inscriptions of this collection come from 31 sources among which Gruter Montfaucon & Muratori. Profusely illustrated with 100 beautiful full-page reproductions of etchings by Anders Zorn. Zorn's reputation was generally derived from his work as a portrait painter. Many of his portraits were painted in the United States where he gained an almost unbelievable success. Bankers captains of industry and politicians were prepared to pay astronomical sums to be painted by him. He painted portraits of Grover Cleveland National Portrait Galley Washington DC and William Taft The White House Washington DC. A portrait of a third president Theodore Roosevelt was made by Zorn in the form of an etching. It was Zorn's etchings that contributed particularly to his success. With Rembrandt as his artistic role model he developed a masterful etching technique where he builds up his motif with a multitude of lines. In total he produced 289 different etched works. 100 of them are reproduced in the present volume. . No date but 1994 First Martino printing "strictly limited to 150 copies". Reprint of the 1880 original. With some 13000 entries per preface but Besterman says 11500 this catalogue remains the most comprehensive of its kind. Described here are many works that originally belonged to Volta Faraday Roget and other eminent scientists. This catalogue is also especially useful for important works relating to electricity that were contributed to scientific periodicals and to the Transactions and Proceedings of scientific bodies. From the preface: "These papers have each been treated as separate works and their titles recorded under the author's name a note being added giving reference to the transactions or periodicals where they may be found." Includes a biographical memoir of Sir Francis Ronalds. After retiring as Director of the Kew Observatory Ronalds spent many years building his collection of electricity publications and compiling this bibliography. Upon his death in 1873 the work was continued and completed by Alfred J. Frost acting librarian of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and a member of the Library Association. At lower left beneath the postal cancellation Ronne signs large and bold in blue ballpoint. Below his handsome signature he inkstamped: "CAPTAIN FINN RONNE USNR / Military Commander - Scientific Leader / Ellsworth Station Edith Ronne Land / ANTARCTICA." He's also placed a large octagonal inkstamp on the cover's verso about the "International Geophysical Year." A superb signature on a superbly appropriate cover. unknown‎

Matted and framed. A unique piece of political and economic history. Ferdinand Pecora was appointed Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate's Committee on Banking and Currency in January 1933. The Senate committee hearings that Pecora led probed the causes of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 that launched a major reform of the American financial system. After Pecora closed his investigations on July 2 1934 President Roosevelt appointed Ferdinand Pecora a Commissioner of the newly formed U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission SEC.
