This German Luftwaffe ace and Knight's Cross winner fought in the Battle of France and Battle of Britain and is credited with downing 93 enemy aircraft -- before he himself was shot down and killed at age 28 over Estonia. PS 4" X 5 3/4" n.p. n.y. Fair only. A handsome sepia-tone head-and-shoulders postcard portrait of Schnell in uniform signed by him the usual "Schnell" in blue ink on the blank lower margin. Signature is fully and easily legible but quite light hence the low grading. Verso address and message portions are blank. Very scarce. unknown

Thick 12mo pp xii 456 some foxing and browning but pages very firm a large folding map at the rear rather foxed and browned and with a marginal tear which is just into the engraved surface see illustration. Contemporary half calf and marbled paper rather rubbed and a bit worn the spine is dull and the lettering indistinct. A contemporary signature on the first blank page. The first French edition Some library copies mention a plate as well as a map but there is no trace of one ever being present in this copy. Schreiber was a teacher and professor of aesthetics court historian and writer. His works on the Rhine were immensely popular and are often viewed as forerunners of the Baedeker travel guides. Carl Emil Schultze 1866 - 1939 Was An American Newspaper Cartoonist Best Known For His Popular Foxy Grandpa Comic Strip Series. He Drew The Strip Under The Pseudonym Bunny His Childhood Nickname. The Bunny Signature Was Usually Accompanied By A Drawing Of A Rabbit.Orn In Lexington Kentucky Schultze Was Educated At Lexington And In Cassel Germany. In Ripley Ohio He Joined Up With A Group Of Traveling Actors For A Brief Period. He Sold His First Drawing In Chicago For Four Dollars And Soon Was Drawing Regularly For The Chicago News During The Late 1880S.His Foxy Grandpa Comic Strip Was First Published In January 1900 In The New York Herald Moving To The New York American In 1902. In 1907 He Was Resting At The Homestead In Hot Springs Virginia Where He Took The Mineral Baths For Rheumatism. By 1913 Schultze Was President Of The Bunny Amusement Corporation Of New York. At The Peak Of His Fame With Foxy Grandpa Schultze Lived On Park Avenue. The Strip Disappeared As A Regular Feature In 1918. In 1919 He Traveled About Promoting A Beverage Named Whistle. In 1922 He Was Leading Oceanside Physical Exercise Classes At Miami Beach. Personal Problems And Debts Plagued Schultze Through The 1920S. He Resurfaced In 1935 Illustrating School Books Including The Popular Julia And The Bear. During The 1930S He Was A Works Progress Administration Worker. In 1935 When Schultze Was Dependent On The Emergency Work Relief Bureau For His Income He Lived In A Furnished Room At 351 West 20Th Street Between 8Th And 9Th Avenues. In 1932 Amid The Great Depression And Widespread Disillusionment About Capitalism's Prospects Schuman Had Signed An Open Letter Supporting The League Of Professional Groups For Foster And Ford Candidates Of The Communist Party Of The United States In That Year's Presidential Election. In A 1936 Article Titled "Liberalism And Communism Reconsidered" He Sought To Reconcile Liberal And Marxist Viewpoints Arguing Both Had Common Interests Against Fascism. Despite Such Activity However Schuman Later Wrote That "The Major Premises Of Marxism Viewed In Retrospect Are Demonstrably False. . . No Civilized Society Has Ever Been Or Can Ever Be 'Classless' Or 'Stateless.' Total Socialism Where Achieved Thus Far Resembles Aldous Huxley's Brave New World Or George Orwell's 1984 Far More Than Plato's Perfect Polity Or Sir Thomas More's Utopia. On The Night Of December 7 1941 Schuman Told An Audience At The Ford Hall Forum "The Nazis Fascists And Japanese Have Made One Tragic Blunder. They Allowed Themselves To Believe That The Work Of Disintegration In America Had Gone Far Enough For Them To Strike. They're Wrong." He Also Said That The United States Should Lead "A New World Order And World Unity." He Urged Recognition Of The Free French And Aid To Governments-In-Exile In Overthrowing Quisling Regimes Leading Toward The Overthrow Of Hitler. He Predicted That Japan Could Fight For Only Three Or Four Months. He Was Attacked By The House Un-American Activities Committee In 1943 As Having A Record Of "Communist Affiliations" And Was Later Assailed By Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy. He Denied The Accusations And Successfully Withstood Efforts By The Committee To Have Him Removed As A Government Analyst Of German Radio Broadcasts A Post That He Held For Several Months In 1942 And 1943 While He Was On Leave From Williams. This German-born Union general was a man of vast accomplishments: U.S. minister to Spain senator from Missouri secretary of the interior editor of the "New York Evening Post" and more. Bold strong signature typical "C. Schurz" 2½" X 1¼" slip n.p. Very good. Mild age toning with paper clip rust mark at upper left touching upon the "C." An appealing war-date example of this extraordinary figure's signature with "Maj Genl." penned beneath it and another rather illegible line bpenned beneath that may read "Dec. 23d 1863". Schurz was raised to the rank of major general in March 1863 which would make this possible 1863 date logical. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Defenders of the Union" along the bottom heavy stock 6" X 9" n.p. n.y. Twelve superb individual portraits each within its own oval decorative frame with Rosecrans at upper center and Sigel Weitzel Meagher and other Union generals surrounding him -- Schurz at upper right. Near fine. Quite handsome. War-date Schurz are encountered far less often that post-war examples. unknown

Black and white photograph signed by conservative African American writer and civil rights activist George S. Schuyler at the beginning of his journalism career "George S Schuyler 10/5/24." After serving nine months in prison for deserting his military post in Hawaii when a Greek immigrant refused to shine his shoes because of his skin color Schuyler moved to New York where his outspoken conservative views and disdain for socialism caught the eye of H. L. Mencken who wrote "I am more and more convinced that Schuyler is the most competent editorial writer now in practice in this great free republic." Schuyler contributed ten articles to the American Mercury during Mencken's tenure as editor all dealing with Black issues and all notable for Schuyler's wit and incisive analysis. In fine condition. African-American author journalist and social commentator George Samuel Schuyler was best known for his staunch conservative views and sensational and often controversial articles dealing with Black issues. Throughout his career he published scores of columns short stories and novels often under a pseudonym his most notable being his 1926 article The Negro-Art Hokum and 1931 satire Black No More. unknown books

Very good. Apparently the lower right portion of a pay slip from one of Schuyler's postings as a Consul signed boldly in brown ink with "salary for quarter ending" in his hand above; after the printed word "Consul" beneath his signature he pens the word "General." Undated but signed either during his tenure as American Consul General in Constantinople 1876-78 Birmingham 1878 or Rome 1879-80. unknown
