‎UNITED STATES - GERMANY. Good. 1946. On offer is a unique significant notebook and diary detailing an original invention by a very successful American inventor and describing his time in post war Germany. This pocket notebook measures 6.75 inches by 3.75 inches. It is comprised of 84 loose-leaf pages and is 90% complete. The covers are missing but the pages are in good condition. The handwriting is small and tight but legible. Sergei D Mitereff was an engineer with Allied Chemical Corporation. He was born in Russia in 1902. He graduated from the Russian Naval Academy and at some point following WWI he emigrated to the United States. He studied at John Hopkins University graduating in 1927 with a degree in Engineering. He passed away in 1971. Allied Chemical Corporation was established in 1920 to counter Germany's dominance of ammonia and industrial dye production. This notebook details one of several patents Mitereff received for industrial processes he invented. This specific patent is U.S. Patent No. 2116881 dealing with the recovery of urea in the ammonia manufacturing process. The notebook is divided into sections and contains drawings tables and descriptions of various processes. Some entries are in German. In July 1947 he travels to Germany on an assignment to obtain formulae and drawings of urea processing from German factories. His comments provide some interesting insights into the post-war months as the United States and other allies sought to take German manufacturing ideas for themselves: "arr at Hotel Carlton about 1:00 PM local time 4th of July. Room across hall from jewel thief Colonel . " July 4 1946. He means Colonel jack W. Durant who with two other officers was involved in stealing Hesse crown jewels valued from $150000 to 3000000 from Kronberg Castle near Frankfurt. He and his wife were kept before trial in a guarded two-room suite in Carlton Hotel. ". went for car - four trips planned and only three avail. All German drivers. What I will do with him in French zone No rations available . paid respects to Colonel Romera . made date with to see Dr. Balz and others tomorrow . Will ask many specific questions. Everything is black market ." July 16 1946. He probably means German chemist Gunther Balz one of the authors of the Balz- Schiemann reaction a pioneering method for preparation of aryl fluorides. "Tried to get urea flow diagram from Bockmeyer but he not available. Then went to see Balz and try to get more info. On pressure he admitted there was such a thing as O2 system. He is an SB of the first water - a Nazi if I ever saw one . " July 19 1946. He notes a number of places he visited and factories he travelled to including IG Farben the huge German chemical manufacturer. He also comments on the living conditions of the local people: ". went to Oberstein. What a place. The people are really hungry there. They also want to buy cigarettes 50 marks - thats $5.00 a pack and we get them for 8 ¢ ." July 21 1946; ". Each of the Drs who was a Nazi must do a certain amount of laboring work ." July 24 1946. He left Germany on September 5th to return to the United States. His notes also contain a detailed listing of expenses incurred on his trip. This notebook is valuable to a historian for the insight it offers into the actions of the allied governments to secure for themselves the high-quality German intellectual 'product' following the war. His notes list many German American and other Allied officers and scientists by name. His expenses provide some insight into daily costs of living. ‎Borden Hants Hampshire England. Good. 1934. Original Wraps. On offer is a handwritten notebook-style instruction manual as titled on the cover "Fencing Lessons Foil - Sabre - Epee". The inside front cover has a pastedown fully identifying the writer: "Serjeant T. Wells of the 1st BATTALION OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. 19th Sept. to 13th Dec. 1934. Instructors Gartzen and Harkinson". An Index of the 67 page book shows that besides the lessons in the three sword types there are chapters on the Army Fencing Union Pitches and Arenas and Bayonet Team Competitions. We are led to believe that this book is also a manual for the Instructor trainee as most pages have three columns headed: Pupil Master Remarks. The remarks appear to be helpful hints for the Instructor in dealing with the pupil. There are a number of hand drawn illustrations including charts tables graphs and such plus there are quite a few little. 1.5" x 1" photographs which were cut from elsewhere and glued in as part of the lesson. In addition to the identification on the cover and inside front cover the back cover has Sjt. Wells handwritten address being we believe Bordon Hants Hampshire. Boards are cracked in the hinges and the netting shows but otherwise in very good shape. Provenance: From the library of a famed Hungarian fencing master instructor Olympian and coach. ‎BOLTON NEW SALEM BLOODY BROOK MASSACHUSETTS 1829. On offer is a super original 19th Century manuscript relic of maritime trade and commerce being a two 2 page hand written agreement dated December 9 1829 between Seth C. Smith of New Salem Massachusetts and Amory Holman of Bolton Massachusetts. The agreement is for Seth Smith to "convey the United States Mail from New Salem to Bloody Brook for three years from the first day of January must be completely secure from water or damage by an oil cloth or leather canvasing equably to and consistent with mail contract made by said Amory Holmann by the post office appointment." The two page document was witnessed by Edward Smith and signed and sealed by Seth c. Smith Amory Holmann and David S. Jones. Each page measures 7 1/2 x 12 inches. There are a few small tears in the folds but overall G. HISTORICAL NOTE 1: The Battle of Bloody Brook was fought on September 12 1675 between English colonial militia from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and a band of Indians led by the Nipmuc sachem Muttawmp. The Indians ambushed colonists escorting a train of wagons carrying the harvest from Deerfield to Hadley during King Philip's War. They killed at least 40 militia men and 17 teamsters out of a company that included 79 militia. HISTORICAL NOTE 2: One online source provides: Also contributing to the thriving local business was the fact that Silas Holman and his son Gen. Amory Holman who in 1818 succeeded his father as owner of the most well-known establishment the Holman Inn had controlling interests in some of the regional stagecoach lies. This arrangement ensured not only that stagecoaches would stop here but that the Holmans' other enterprises including a blacksmith shop and harness shop would have plenty of work servicing the coaches and horses. Then in 1827 Amory Holman founded the large Bolton & Lancaster Stage Company with headquarters at the inn. Business again increased when in 1832 Gen. Holman received contracts to carry the mail from Boston to Albany and to Brattleboro Vermont. He eventually sublet twelve subsidiary lines to his coach drivers. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
